Abstract:Although the Antarctic is considered as a pristine region away from human pollution, traditional and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), have been constantly detected in the Antarctic, which received global concerns. POPs are persistent and toxic, prone to accumulate in organisms and further pose environmental risks. In order to understand their biogeochemical processes as well as impacts on organisms in the Antarctic, we summarized the research status of POPs in different trophic levels in the Antarctic marine, combining their living habits. We also proposed the future research directions of POPs in the vulnerable Antarctic ecosystem. Researches showed that the Antar-ctic was the region under the lowest pollution level all over the world. However, the types of POPs in Antarctic marine organisms were increasing in the past decades, meaning the area was affected increasingly by the activities inside and/or outside of this area. Scattered research data and different techniques hamper red the elucidation about the mechanism of POPs transport along the food chain. It is urgent to establish long-term monitoring and assessment program on POPs dynamics of Antarctic marine ecosystem.
New and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in breeding seabirds from the East Antarctic

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are pervasive and a significant threat to the environment worldwide. Yet, reports of POP levels in Antarctic seabirds based on blood are scarce, resulting in significant geographical gaps. Blood concentrations offer a snapshot of contamination within live populations, and have been used widely for Arctic and Northern Hemisphere seabird species but less so in Antarctica. This paper presents levels of legacy POPs (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in the blood of five Antarctic seabird species breeding within Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Legacy PCBs and OCPs were detected in all species sampled, with Adélie penguins showing comparatively high ∑PCB levels (61.1 ± 87.6 ng/g wet weight (ww)) compared to the four species of flying seabirds except the snow petrel (22.5 ± 15.5 ng/g ww), highlighting that legacy POPs are still present within Antarctic wildlife despite decades-long bans. Both PBDEs and NBFRs were detected in trace levels for all species and hexabromobenzene (HBB) was quantified in cape petrels (0.3 ± 0.2 ng/g ww) and snow petrels (0.2 ± 0.1 ng/g ww), comparable to concentrations found in Arctic seabirds. These results fill a significant data gap within the Antarctic region for POPs studies, representing a crucial step forward assessing the fate and impact of legacy POPs contamination in the Antarctic environment.
Source and Distribution of Emerging and Legacy Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have received significant and ongoing attention. To establish favorable regulatory policies, it is vital to investigate the occurrence, source, and budgets of POPs worldwide. POPs including phthalic acid esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and highly chlorinated flame retardants (HFRs) have not yet been examined in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO). In this study, the distribution of POPs has been investigated from surface sediments with the depth of 4369-5742 m in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB) of EIO. The average (+/- SD) concentrations of Sigma(11)PAEs, Sigma 11OPEs, Sigma(4) BFRs, and Sigma(5)HFRs were 1202.0 +/- 274.36 ng g(-1) dw, 15.3 +/- 7.23 ng g(-1) dw, 327.6 +/- 211.74 pg g(-1) dw, and 7.9 +/- 7.45 pg g(-1) dw, respectively. The high abundance of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAEs, chlorinated OPEs, LMW BDEs, and anti-Dechlorane Plus indicated the pollution characteristics in the EIO. Correlation analysis demonstrated that LMW compounds may be derived from the high-molecular-weight compounds. The monsoon circulation, currents, and Antarctic Bottom Water may be the main drivers. POP accumulation rate, depositional flux, and mass inventory in the Indian Ocean were also estimated.
Persistent organic pollutants in the Antarctic marine environment: The influence impacts of human activity, regulations, and climate change

Abstract:This study investigates the presence, distribution, and potential impacts of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) on the Antarctic marine environment. The analysis results from the King Sejong Station, the Jang Bogo Station, and Cape Evans revealed the highest concentrations of both PFASs and HBCDs at King Sejong Station, indicating the significant influence of human activity. Short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) dominated the seawater samples, with PFPeA at the highest concentration (0.076 ng/L) at King Sejong Station, whereas perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) were prevalent in the sediments, with PFHxS reaching 0.985 ng/g. Total PFASs in benthos ranged from N.D. to 2.40 ng/g ww across all stations. This indicated the effects of long-range transport and glacial meltwater. α-HBCD was the most common diastereomer in benthos samples, detected in 58.3% of samples, suggesting its selective persistency. Although risk quotient analysis revealed low immediate risks to lower-trophic organisms, potential risks remain owing to their persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Contaminant patterns changed after regulations: perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) levels decreased, unregulated PFASs increased, HBCD stereoisomer ratios shifted towards α-HBCD dominance, and overall HBCD concentrations declined. Widespread persistence of regulated substances was observed in Antarctic environments, highlighting the need for comprehensive and long-term monitoring strategies. This study provides essential baseline data on contaminant distributions across the Southern Ocean, contributing to our understanding of emerging pollutants in Antarctic regions and informing future environmental protection efforts.

Abstract:From November 2013 to March 2014, air samples were collected in the Antarctic marginal seas during the 30th Chinese Antarctic research expedition. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analyzed in these samples. The mean concentrations were observed for hexachlorobenzene (HCB) >ΣPCBs >Σhexachlorocyclohexanes(HCHs) >Σdichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDTs)>Σchlordanes. High levels of HCB were found near east Antarctica and in the Ross Sea, reflecting the re-emission of HCB from environmental reservoirs of these regions. Parent DDTs (p,p’- and o,p’-DDT) were rarely detected, suggesting that atmospheric DDT was predominantly influencedby weathered DDT from some secondarysources. However, fresh inputs of DDTs could not be excluded because there were still some samples with high proportions of parent DDTs. HCHs only were detected in the South Indian Ocean (near Australia), andthis result might be related to the intense emissions of HCHs from southern Australia. Ratios of trans-chlordane/cis-chlordanein most samples were lower than that in technical chlordane, reflecting the main influence of weathered chlordane. High levels of ΣPCBs were found in the Ross Sea, suggesting an intense re-emission of PCBs. Furthermore, atmospheric PCBs near the Antarctic Peninsula were also relatively high, this finding might be attributed to the emissions of PCBs from nearby Antarctic research stations. Comparing with the Arctic, transport of OCPs and PCBs towards Antarctica is more difficult. The Antarctic marginal seas would act as both barriers and “buffer zones”during the transportation processes.
The Commerson's dolphin as Subantarctic sentinel of POPs: Insights into the pollutant status in one of the southernmost coastal areas of the globe

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are halogenated contaminants found globally. Cetaceans are impacted by these pollutants, and nowadays, it is essential to understand their presence to mitigate their impacts. This study aimed to establish baseline levels of POPs in the blubber of Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) within the Subantarctic ecosystem. A wide range of POPs concentrations were measured among individuals: ΣPCBs from 289.5 to 15264 ng g-1 lw and ΣDDTs from 540.4 to 17657 ng g-1 lw. Levels of HCB and mirex ranged from 48 to 1703.7 ng g-1 lw and 5.1-1917.4 ng g-1 lw, respectively. The predominant POPs were mid-to high molecular weight PCBs (hexa-PCBs), consistent with other findings in cetaceans of the southern hemisphere. The mean ratio of ΣDDT/ΣPCB was 0.44, with p,p'-DDE/ΣDDT at 0.56, indicating p,p'-DDE as the dominant DDT isomer. Furthermore, differences in POP concentrations were observed based on sexual maturity, with mature males exhibiting higher levels of ƩPCBs, HCB, ƩDDT, and mirex. Age and total body length of animals were strongly correlated with POP concentrations. Our study provides valuable insights into the pollutant status of POPs in the Subantarctic population of Commerson's dolphins inhabiting the southernmost coastal regions of South America.
Chemical threats for the sentinel Pygoscelis adeliae from the Ross Sea (Antarctica): Occurrence and levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and mercury within the largest marine protected area worldwide

Abstract:The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (RS-MPA) hosts endemic species that have to cope with multiple threats, including chemical contamination. Adèlie penguin is considered a good sentinel species for monitoring pollutants. Here, 23 unhatched eggs, collected from three colonies along the Ross Sea coasts, were analysed to provide updated results on legacy pollutants and establish a baseline for newer ones. Average sum of polychlorinated biphenyls (∑PCBs) at the three colonies ranged 20.9-24.3 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and included PCBs IUPAC nos. 28, 118, 153, 138, 180. PCBs were dominated by hexachlorinated congeners as previously reported. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) ranged between 134 and 166 and 181-228 ng/g lw, respectively. Overall, ∑PCBs was exceeded by pesticides, contrary to previous studies from the Ross Sea. Sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (∑PBDEs) ranged between 0.90 and 1.18 ng/g lw and consisted of BDE-47 (that prevailed as expected, representing 60-80 % of the ∑PBDEs) and BDE-85. Sum of perfluoroalkyl substances (∑PFAS) ranged from 1.04 to 1.53 ng/g wet weight and comprised five long-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA); perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) was also detected. The PFAS profile was dominated by PFCAs as already observed in Arctic seabirds. Mercury ranged from 0.07 to 0.15 mg/kg dry weight similarly to previous studies. Legacy pollutants confirmed their ongoing presence in Antarctic biota and their levels seemed mostly in line with the past, but with minor variations in some cases, likely due to continued input or release from past reservoirs. PFAS were reported for the first time in penguins from the Ross Sea, highlighting their ubiquity. Although further studies would be useful to increase the sample size and accordingly improve our knowledge on spatial and temporal trends, this study provides interesting data for future monitoring programs within the RS-MPA that will be crucial to test its effectiveness against human impacts.

Abstract:Despite being one of the most remote areas on the planet, the Antarctic continent is subject to anthropogenic influences. The presence of various groups of contaminants, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has been documented in the region over the past decades. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the detection of new pollutants, such as emerging contaminants (ECs), in Antarctic coastal environments. This study analyzed the occurrence and levels of selected POPs, PAHs, ECs in surface sediments from Admiralty Bay, Antarctica Peninsula. Non-target screening was employed to identify potential novel contaminants in the region. Samples ( n = 17) were extracted using an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system and instrumental analyses were performed using gas chromatography coupled to a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC/MS-MS). Regarding regulated contaminants, concentrations of Σ5PCBs ranged from <lod 0.5="" g −1, while Σ16PAHs ranged from 2.6 to 617.4 ng g −1 . These compounds were predominant in the Martel inlet, suggesting influences of local input sources, especially for PAHs. ECs were detected in some sites of the Ezcurra and Martel inlets, especially nearby the Brazilian and Polish research stations. The UV filters homosalate (0.3 to 251.3 ng g −1 ) and octocrylene (0.7 to 93.8 ng g −1 ) were the most abundant EC, followed by TPP (0.1 to 87.4 ng g −1 ) and galaxolide (0.2 to 55.0 ng g −1 ). Applying non-target analysis, phthalates, and the fragrance OTNE (octahydro-tetramethyl-naphthalenyl-ethanone) were identified for the first time in Antarctic sediments. The data highlights the contribution of human activities in the region, possibly through wastewater effluents. This study provides data on the current levels of PAHs and POPs in the region, which are steadily decreasing over the years.

The present study reported the ubiquitous occurrence of OPEs in an ecosystem from the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island, Antarctica for the first time. The OPE concentrations decreased in the following sequence based on dry weight: penguin feathers (94.4 ng/g)> fish (8.81 ng/g)> Cape petrel feathers (8.48 ng/g)> Archeogastropoda (Agas, 6.46 ng/g)> Neogastropoda (Ngas, 4.89 ng/g)> sediment (3.66 ng/g)> algae (1.60 ng/g). Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) accounted for 61.2% of detected OPEs in all samples. Significant trophic magnification behavior of TCEP, TCIPP and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) was discovered, with trophic magnification factors of 5.20, 2.92 and 2.74, respectively. Compared to measurements of POPs from previous studies, OPEs level was much higher than legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which indicated the pollutant burden in the Antarctic ecosystems shifted from legacy POPs to emerging pollutants. Abstract:Polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) are industrial chemicals whose production was discontinued in the early nineties in most countries. Sill, PCBs are detectable in pristine and remote locations. Occurrence in regions such as Southern Oceans and Antarctica are influenced by the global, and regional, cycling. Here, we studied the surface and deep ocean distribution of indicator- and dioxin-like PCB congeners in the Southern Indian Ocean (SIO), and the coast of Antarctica (COA) during the tenth Indian Southern Ocean Expedition (SOE-10), December 2017-February 2018. ∑21PCBs in SIO surface waters ranged from 3.8 to 167.1 pg L-1 (average ± standard deviation: 35.7 ± 48.4 pg L-1), and in COA from 1.0 to 41.8 pg L-1 (13.8 ± 12.7 pg L-1), respectively. A noticeable gradient was observed, with higher PCBs levels in northern latitudes than southern latitudes in the SIO, and higher levels in the eastern longitudes compared to western longitudes in the COA. Results suggest the influence of secondary sources, or re-emission, of PCBs in the Southern Oceans and Antarctica. Both regions showed notable PCB levels in surface and deep waters (up to 1000 m) due to ongoing surface sources and remineralization processes in deeper waters. Multimedia modeling with the global model (BETR-Global) suggests the SIO act as a net sink for PCBs in the ocean.

Abstract:Marine pollution is becoming ubiquitous in the environment. Observations of pollution on beaches, in the coastal ocean, and in organisms in the Antarctic are becoming distressingly common. Increasing human activity, growing tourism, and an expanding krill fishing industry along the West Antarctic Peninsula all represent potential sources of plastic pollution and other debris (collectively referred to as debris) to the region. However, the sources of these pollutants from point (pollutants released from discrete sources) versus non-point (pollutants from a large area rather than a specific source) sources are poorly understood. We used buoyant simulated particles released in a high-resolution physical ocean model to quantify pollutant loads throughout the region. We considered non-point sources of debris from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Bellingshausen Sea, Weddell Sea, and point source pollution from human activities including tourism, research, and fishing. We also determined possible origins for observed debris based on data from the Southern Ocean Observing System and Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research program. Our results indicate that point source pollution released in the coastal Antarctic is more likely to serve as a source for observed debris than non-point sources, and that the dominant source of pollution is region-specific. Penguin colonies in the South Shetland and Elephant Islands had the greatest debris load from point sources whereas loads from non-point sources were greatest around the southernmost colonies. Penguin colonies at Cornwallis Island and Fort Point were exposed to the highest theoretical debris loads. While these results do not include physical processes such as windage and Stokes Drift that are known to impact debris distributions and transport in the coastal ocean, these results provide critical insights to building an effective stratified sampling and monitoring effort to better understand debris distributions, concentrations, and origins throughout the West Antarctic Peninsula.

Levels, sources and chemical fate of persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere and snow along the western Antarctic Peninsula

Abstract:The Antarctic continent is among the most pristine regions; yet various organic contaminants have been measured there routinely. Air and snow samples were collected during the austral spring (October-November, 2010) along the western Antarctic Peninsula and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to assess the relative importance of long-range transport versus local primary or secondary emissions. Highest concentrations of PCBs, PBDEs and DDTs were observed in the glacier's snow sample, highlighting the importance of melting glaciers as a possible secondary source of legacy pollutants to the Antarctic. In the atmosphere, contaminants were mainly found in the vapor phase (>65%). Hexachlorobenzene (33.6 pg/m(3)), PCBs (11.6 pg/m(3)), heptachlor (5.64 pg/m(3)), PBDEs (4.22 pg/m(3)) and cis-chlordane (2.43 pg/m(3)) were the most abundant contaminants. In contrast to other compounds, PBDEs seem to have originated from local sources, possibly the research station itself. Gas-particle partitioning for analytes were better predicted using the adsorption partitioning model than an octanol-based absorption approach. Diffusive flux calculations indicated that net deposition is the dominant pathway for PBDEs and chlordanes, whereas re-volatilization from snow (during melting or metamorphosis) was observed for PCBs and some OCPs.

Stable nitrogen isotope ratios (δ(15)N) were used as a measure for trophic position. A decreasing trend in POP levels toward the sea was observed. For POP concentrations in sediments, this trend could be attributed to a dilution effect from mixing with seawater. However, concentrations in biota more downstream were higher than expected after taking into account the dilution effect, possibly due to differences in bioavailability. Tissue concentrations were correlated with the lipid content in biota, but not with body size. Biomagnification was only significant for some PCB congeners and p,p'-DDE at the most marine sampling location (Terneuzen, L1) and for p,p'-DDD and BDE 100 at the second sampling location (Bath, L2). A significant decreasing relationship was found for γ-HCH concentrations with increasing δ(15)N at Terneuzen. For Antwerpen (L3), no significant relationships were detected. TMFs ranged from 0.64 for γ-HCH up to 1.60 for PCB 194. These results suggest that biomagnification was more important in the marine part of the estuary, although the presence of multiple carbon sources at the freshwater side might have led to an underestimation of the influence of trophic position.

Abstract:Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Organochlorinated Pesticides (OCPs) are 'trapped' in a variety of environmental media and can therefore undergo further processing by geochemical cycles. By reviewing a wide range of research studies, we present and discuss the main progresses that affect legacy contaminants, such as migration and transformation processes, biological effects assessment across all Arctic media. PCBs and OCPs demonstrated an overall decreasing concentration trend over time in the Arctic. Ecological risk assessment was undertaken by comparison with two standards, suggesting that there was no ecological risk in either soil or sediment. The concentrations of HCB, ΣHCHs, ΣDDTs, chlordane, mirex, and ΣPCBs increased with trophic levels (TLs), showing a significant linear correlation (P < 0.001). The calculated trophic magnification factors (TMFs) values ranged from 0.0004 to 26.63, among which DDTs had the highest value. Future research need to focus on the long-term fate of PCBs and OCPs.
Persistent Organic Pollutants in Ocean Sediments from the North Pacific to the Arctic Ocean

Abstract:Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OC pesticides), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are reported in surficial sediments sampled along cruise transects from the Bering Sea to the central Arctic Ocean. OCs and PCBs all had significantly higher concentrations in the relatively shallow water (<500 m depth) of the Bering-Chukchi shelf areas (e.g., sigma PCB 286265 pg g(-1) dw) compared to the deeper water regions (>500 m) of the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean (e.g., Canada Basin sigma PCB 149102 pg g(-1) dw). Concentrations were similar to, or slightly lower than, studies from the 1990s, indicating a lack of a declining trend. PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) displayed very low concentrations (e.g., range of median values, 3.5-6.6 pg/g dw). In the shelf areas, the sediments comprised similar proportions of silt and clay, whereas the deep basin sediments were dominated by clay, with a lower total organic carbon (TOC) content. While significant positive correlations were observed between persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentrations and TOC (Pearson correlation, r=0.66-0.75, p <0.05), the lack of strong correlations, combined with differing chemical profiles between the sediments and technical formulations (and/or marine surface waters), indicate substantial chemical processing during transfer to the benthic environment. Marked differences in sedimentation rates between the shallow and deeper water regions are apparent (the approximate to 5 cm-depth grab samples collected here representing approximate to 100 years of accumulation for the shelf sediments and approximate to 1000 years for the deeper ocean regions), which may bias any comparisons. Nonetheless, the sediments of the shallower coastal arctic seas appear to serve as significant repositories for POPs deposited from surface waters.

Abstract:Abstract The Arctic Ocean is known to be contaminated by various persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The Fram Strait, the only deep water passage to the Arctic Ocean (from the Atlantic Ocean), represents an unquantified gateway for POPs fluxes into and out of the Arctic. Polyethylene passive samplers were deployed in vertical profiles in the Fram Strait and in air and surface water in the Canadian Archipelago to determine the concentrations, profiles and mass fluxes of dissolved polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). In the Fram Strait, higher concentrations of ΣPCBs (1.3‐3.6 pg L ‐1 ), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ΣDDTs, 5.2‐9.1 pg L ‐1 ) were observed in the deep water masses (below 1000 m), similar to nutrient‐like vertical profiles. There was net southward transport of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and hexachlorocyclohexanes (ΣHCHs) of 0.70 and 14 Mg per annum, but a net northward transport of ΣPCBs at 0.16 Mg a ‐1 through the Fram Strait.

Abstract:23 livers of South American fur seal ( Arctocephalus australis ) found stranded in southern Brazilian beaches were evaluated for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). POPs (DDTs, mirex, eldrin, dieldrin, aldrin, isodrin, HCHs, chlordanes and PCBs) and PAHs in livers were Soxhlet extracted, analyzed and quantified using Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-TQMS). The main POPs found were PCBs and DDTs, totaling 81 %. Among pesticides, mirex followed DDTs, possibly due to usage in Uruguay, followed by Σdrins, ΣCHLs and ΣHCHs. Naphthalene was the major PAH found, while heavier compounds did not significantly bioaccumulate. Concentrations of POPs resembled previous findings for A. australis . Considering only juveniles, no POPs showed significant differences between sexes. Lipidic content, weight and length did not show any correlation with POP concentration. This was the first record of PAHs and PBDEs in South American fur seals, and the levels of these pollutants were relatively low.

Abstract:The historical contamination of eastern Canadian shelf waters remains an ongoing concern, predominantly stemming from anthropogenic discharges in the Great Lakes region. Although legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were banned decades ago, it remains unclear whether their concentrations have sufficiently decreased to safer levels in cetaceans that feed in the continental shelf waters of the northwestern Atlantic. This study compares polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and organochlorine pesticide (OC) accumulation in six cetacean species sampled in the Northwest Atlantic from 2015 to 2022. We assessed the influence of relative trophic level and foraging habitat preferences on POP accumulations among species using stable isotopes and fatty acids as dietary tracers. We further identified the species most susceptible to the effects of these contaminants. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) exhibited the highest PCB (∼100 mg/kg lw) and OC concentrations, followed by other odontocetes, with lowest concentrations in mysticetes. Stable isotope analysis revealed an unexpected lack of correlation between δ15N values and contaminant levels. However, there was a positive correlation between δ13C values and POP concentrations. Cetaceans foraging on pelagic prey species, as indicated by elevated proportions of the FA markers 22:1n11 and 20:1n9, had lower contaminant loads compared to cetaceans with benthic/coastal FA signatures. PCB and DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) concentrations are lower now in most cetacean species than in the 1980s and 1990s, likely due to regulatory measures restricting their production and use. Although current PCB concentrations for most species are under the thresholds for high risks of immune and reproductive failure, concentrations in killer whales exceed all established toxicity thresholds, underscoring the need for further action to reduce sources of these contaminants to the continental shelf waters of the northwestern Atlantic.

Abstract:A total of 23 sediment samples are collected from Ross Sea and Drake Passage to investigate the distribution characteristics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Antarctic marine sediments. Over 51 kinds of PCBs are detected through exhaustive searches using multiple reaction monitoring system. The results show that the concentration of individual PCB congener and total PCBs vary greatly among sampling sites, ranging from not detected to 49.75 ng g(-1) and 3.77 to 246.86 ng g(-1), respectively. The average PCBs level in Ross Sea is ten times higher than that in Drake Passage. Two different homologues, hexa- and tetra-CBs, give high contributions to SPCBs level in most samples from Ross Sea and Drake Passage, respectively. Our results support that the marine sediments might be an important sink for PCBs. Besides, the biological pump and the primary productivity might be responsible for the distribution differences of PCBs between Ross Sea and Drake Passage.
