Abstract:Abstract This field report describes two deployments of heterogeneous unmanned marine vehicle teams at the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake response and recovery by the Center for Robot‐Assisted Search and Rescue (USA) in collaboration with the International Rescue System Institute (Japan). Four remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) were fielded in Minamisanriku and Rikuzentakata from April 18 to 24, 2011, for port clearing and victim recovery missions using sonar and video. The ROVs were used for multirobot operations only 46% of the time due to logistics. The teleoperated ROVs functioned as a dependent team 86% of the time to avoid sensor interference or collisions. The deployment successfully reopened the Minamisanriku New Port area and searched areas prohibited to divers in Rikuzentakata. The IRS‐CRASAR team planned to return from October 18 to 28, 2011, with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), and an ROV to conduct debris mapping for environmental remediation missions. The intent was to investigate an interdependent strategy by which the UAV and AUV would rapidly conduct low‐resolution scans identifying areas of interest for further investigation by the ROV. The UAV and AUV could not be used; however, the ROV was able to cover 80,000 m 2 in 6 h, finding submerged wreckage and pollutants in areas previously marked clear by divers. The field work (i) showed that the actual and planned multirobot system configurations did not fall neatly into traditional taxonomies, (ii) identified a new measure, namely perceptual confidence, and (iii) posed five open research questions for multirobot systems operating in littoral regions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:In this report, we present the system design, operational strategy, and results of coordinated multivehicle field demonstrations of autonomous marine robotic technologies in searchfor- life missions within the Pacific shelf margin of Costa Rica and the Santorini-Kolumbo caldera complex, which serve as analogs to environments that may exist in oceans beyond Earth. This report focuses on the automation of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) manipulator operations for targeted biological sample-collection-and-return from the seafloor. In the context of future extraterrestrial exploration missions to ocean worlds, an ROV is an analog to a planetary lander, which must be capable of high-level autonomy. Our field trials involve two underwater vehicles, the SuBastian ROV and the Nereid Under Ice (NUI) hybrid ROV for mixed initiative (i.e., teleoperated or autonomous) missions, both equipped seven-degrees-of-freedom hydraulic manipulators.We describe an adaptable, hardware-independent computer vision architecture that enables high-level automated manipulation. The vision system provides a three-dimensional understanding of the workspace to inform manipulator motion planning in complex unstructured environments. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the vision system and control framework through field trials in increasingly challenging environments, including the automated collection and return of biological samples from within the active undersea volcano Kolumbo. Based on our experiences in the field, we discuss the performance of our system and identify promising directions for future research.

Abstract:In our continuous exploration and exploitation of the ocean, marine robots are powerful tools for accessing oceanic environments that are sometimes harsh or even too dangerous for humans. Early marine robots acted under human supervision, executing preprogrammed tasks or working under the control of highly trained specialists. In recent years, with the advancements in hardware and software, marine robots have begun to possess the capability to autonomously sense and adapt to the intricate ocean environment, thus working more efficiently and intelligently. By integrating recent advances in science and technology, ranging from biomimetic technology and new materials to advanced artificial intelligence methods, marine robots have the potential to be more powerful in the exploration of the ocean environment and facilitating a broader spectrum of tasks, such as studying marine life in their natural habitats or performing inspections and dexterous manipulation in the deep sea.

Abstract:Robots are increasingly used in subsea environments because of their positive impact on human safety and operational capabilities in the deep ocean. However, achieving full autonomy remains challenging because of the extreme conditions they encounter. In this context, we propose an autonomous underwater architecture for long-term deep-ocean inspection that robustly plans activities and efficiently deliberates with no human help. It combines the innovative Saipem's Hydrone-R subsea vehicle with an advanced planning architecture, resulting in a robot that autonomously perceives its surroundings, plans a mission, and adapts in real time to contingencies and opportunities. After describing the robot hardware, we present the technological advancements achieved in building its software, along with several compelling use cases. We explore scenarios where the robot conducts long-term underwater missions operating under resource constraints while remaining responsive to opportunities, such as new inspection points. Our solution gained significant reliability and acceptance within the oil and gas community as evidenced by its current deployment on a real field in Norway.

Abstract:Coral reefs are under increasing threat from the impacts of climate change. Whilst current restoration approaches are effective, they require significant human involvement and equipment, and have limited deployment scale. Harvesting wild coral spawn from mass spawning events, rearing them to the larval stage and releasing the larvae onto degraded reefs is an emerging solution for reef restoration known as coral reseeding. This paper presents a reconfigurable autonomous surface vehicle system that can eliminate risky diving, cover greater areas with coral larvae, has a sensory suite for additional data measurement, and requires minimal non-technical expert training. A key feature is an on-board real-time benthic substrate classification model that predicts when to release larvae to increase settlement rate and ultimately, survivability. The presented robot design is reconfigurable, light weight, scalable, and easy to transport. Results from restoration deployments at Lizard Island demonstrate improved coral larvae release onto appropriate coral substrate, while also achieving 21.8 times more area coverage compared to manual methods.

Abstract:Underwater marine inspections for ship hull or marine debris, etc. are one of the vital measures carried out to ensure the safety of marine structures and underwater species. This work details the design, development and qualification of a compact and economical observation class Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) prototype, intended for carrying out scientific research in shallow-waters. The ROV has a real-time processor and controller onboard, which synchronizes the movement of the vehicle based on the commands from the surface station. The vehicle piloting is done using the onboard Raspberry pi camera and the support of some navigation sensors like Global Positioning System (GPS), inertial, temperature, depth and pressure. This prototype of ROV is a compact unit built using a limited number of components and is suitable for underwater inspection using a single camera. The developed ROV is initially tested in a pool.

Abstract:With the development of ever more powerful micro-computers, the cost and capabilities of robotic systems for environmental surveying using remotely control systems continues to decrease and improve. Historically, submarine exploration was restricted to companies or organisations with considerable finances and resources; however, the last decade has seen the advent of ‘low cost’ remotely operated vehicles (ROV). These cost anywhere from $400-$40,000 and provide an opportunity for wider participation in ocean exploration. However, with 60% of the world's seafloor lying at depths in excess of 1000 m and current low cost ROVs typiclly depth limited to just 100 m, there is presently an inability to “go deep” affordably. This review assesses the state of the art for deep ROV technologies and identifies the primary technological hurdles to overcome in order to facilitate proliferation of low cost ROVs for deep ocean exploration with an emphasis on their application to mineral and ore prospecting.

Abstract:In this paper, we outline a low cost multi-robot autonomous platform for a broad set of applications including water quality monitoring, flood disaster mitigation and depth buoy verification. By working cooperatively, fleets of vessels can cover large areas that would otherwise be impractical, time consuming and prohibitively expensive to traverse by a single vessel. We describe the hardware design, control infrastructure, and software architecture of the system, while additionally presenting experimental results from several field trials. Further, we discuss our initial efforts towards developing our system for water quality monitoring, in which a team of watercraft equipped with specialized sensors autonomously samples the physical quantity being measured and provides online situational awareness to the operator regarding water quality in the observed area. From canals in New York to volcanic lakes in the Philippines, our vessels have been tested in diverse marine environments and the results obtained from initial experiments in these domains are also discussed.

Abstract:Unmanned, autonomous air-to-sea vehicles, fully capable of transitioning between the two mediums, have only recently become technologically possible and have attracted great interest due to their numerous applications. However, current vehicles are unable to withstand the environmental conditions of the deep sea, especially with regards to their electronics. Previous methods for protecting electronics in the deep sea are not optimized for transitions to air. Here, a novel, lightweight, thermally-conductive, easily processed, mechanically robust, epoxy-based nanocomposite coating is presented. This material was developed with the intention of bringing the multi-domain air-water drone, known as the Naviator, to the deep ocean. In this work, the coating is thoroughly characterized and demonstrated to protect electronics submerged in water at high-pressure benchtop conditions as well as in an actual deep sea mission. The coating is also contrasted against unmodified epoxy, as well as commercial syntactic foam, and deemed superior for this application.

Abstract:Autonomous underwater robots typically require higher cost and time for demonstrations compared to other domains due to the complexity of the environment. Due to the limited capacity and payload flexibility, it is challenging to find off-the-shelf underwater robots that are affordable, customizable, and subject to environmental variability. Custom-built underwater robots may be necessary for specialized applications or missions, but the process can be more costly and time-consuming than purchasing an off-the-shelf autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). To address these challenges, we propose a modular underwater robot, Modularis, that can serve as an open-source testbed system. Our proposed system expedites the testing of perception, planning, and control algorithms.

Abstract:In order to keep aquatic ecosystems safe and healthy, it is imperative that cleaning be done frequently. This research suggests the use of autonomous underwater rovers for effective underwater cleaning as a novel approach to this issue. The enhanced sensing and navigational capabilities of the autonomous rovers enable them to independently navigate underwater environments and find and remove underwater garbage and uneaten fish feed which can be recycled. The suggested solution not only does away with the requirement for human divers, but also provides a more effective and affordable technique for underwater cleaning. The paper also examines the creation, testing, and potential of the autonomous underwater rovers.

Abstract:A growing application for unmanned vehicle technology is the localization, classification and mitigation of underwater hazards such as munitions in shallow harbor environments. Because visual inspection of targets can be difficult or impossible in murky harbors and requires precise target localization, acoustic sensors such as sidescan sonar and synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) are used more extensively for munition detection missions. While these techniques can provide rich images of targets and the environment, postprocessing is often required and the sensors themselves are too expensive to be practical in multi-vehicle operations. A new system for low-cost, autonomous-surface-vehicle-based unexploded ordnance detection and localization is under development to provide a practical alternative to provide greater coverage via distributed, multi-vehicle missions. A mobile receiver array, fixed source geometry makes it possible to cover large areas while detecting man-made, aspect-dependent targets based on directional scattering from seabed targets. The system built on a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution JetYak autonomous surface vehicle and results from experiments in summer 2019 in Ashumet Pond in Falmouth, Massachusetts are presented. Abstract:In this study, a small, inexpensive remotely driven underwater vehicle that can navigate in shallow water for the purpose of monitoring water quality and demonstrating vehicle control algorithms is presented. The vehicle is operated by an onboard micro-controller, and the sensor payload comprises a turbidity sensor for determining the quality of the water, a depth sensor, and a 9-axis inertial measurement unit. The developed vehicle is an open frame remotely operated vehicle (ROV) with a small footprint and a modular physical and electrical architecture. With a net weight of 1.6 kg, a maximum depth rating of 20 meters, and a development cost of around $80, the ROV frame is composed of polyvinyl chloride tubes and has a length of 0.35 meters. As a ground station, a dedicated laptop shows crucial vehicle data in real time and can send commands to the vehicle. Initial testing in the pool demonstrates that the vehicle is completely operational and effectively complies with pilot commands.

Abstract:Many countries are very active in marine research and operate their own research fleets. In this decade, a number of research vessels have been renewed and equipped with the most modern navigation systems and tools. However, much of the research gear used for biological sampling, especially in the deep-sea, is outdated and dependent on wired operations. The deployment of gear can be very time consuming and, thus, expensive. The present paper reviews wire-dependent, as well as autonomous research gear for biological sampling at the deep seafloor. We describe the requirements that new gear could fulfil, including the improvement of spatial and temporal sampling resolution, increased autonomy, more efficient sample conservation methodologies for morphological and molecular studies and the potential for extensive in situ real-time studies. We present applicable technologies from robotics research, which could be used to develop novel autonomous marine research gear, which may be deployed independently and/or simultaneously with traditional wired equipment. A variety of technological advancements make such ventures feasible and timely. In proportion to the running costs of modern research vessels, the development of such autonomous devices might be already paid off after a discrete number of pioneer expeditions.
