Abstract:The water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) is an important industrial process for H2 production. Here, we rationally construct alumina supported dual-site copper catalysts, i.e. Cu+ single atoms (Cu1+) surrounding Cu nanoparticles (CuNP0), for WGSR. Our findings show that CO is tightly adsorbed on surface-enriched Cu1+ sites to inhibit competitive adsorption with H2O on CuNP0 sites. The number of adsorbed CO is two orders of magnitude higher than that on conventional Cu-based catalysts. It significantly increases surface CO concentration, and forms a unique structure of CuNP0 “islands” immerged in CO “pool”. Benefiting from synergy of Cu1+ and CuNP0 sites, the catalyst with 12% Cu loading exhibits extraordinary and robust catalytic activity, compared to benchmark Cu-Zn-Al catalyst, especially at low temperatures, e.g. 200 °C. The catalyst design strategy and facile synthesis methodology employed in this work could be potentially applied in other related industrial reactions.

Abstract:Ni-based bimetallic catalysts have been widely used in the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, but the synertistic effect and reaction mechanism over bimetallic catalysts are rather limited. In this work, WGS reaction mechanism and the main side-reaction (coke formation) over the NiM catalysts (NiFe(111), NiCo(111), NiCu(111) and NiZn(111) surfaces) are investigated via density functional theory (DFT) approach. The results show that the second metal element (Fe, Co, Cu and Zn) leads to the dispersion of active Ni atoms on the NiM surfaces and M site can also act as the active sites, which rises the energy barriers for coke formation. Binary linear regression of site size and electron factors to adsorption energy of H2O and CO reveals that the ligand effect plays a more important role in determining adsorption strength than the strain effect on NiFe(111) and NiCo(111), while for NiCu(111) and NiZn(111) surfaces, the adsorption energies are strongly affected by strain rather than ligand effects. The WGS mechanism is further calculated over NiCo (111) and NiCu(111), which present both less carbon deposition and better ability of H2O dissociation than the others. It is illustrated that on NiCo(111), the redox path is the most favorable, and the CO association with O is the rate determining step. While on NiCu(111), the dominant pathway is the carboxyl path with the association of CO and OH to COOH as the rate determining step. In addition, experimental studies verify that the NiCo and NiCu samples exhibit the optimum catalytic activity and resistance against carbon deposition, which accords well with the theoretical prediction. This study provides guidance for rational design of Ni-based bimetallic catalysts for WGS reaction based on the chemical nature and electronic environment of doped metal.

Abstract:Copper phyllosilicate supported over silica was prepared with ammonia evaporation method. Compared with the catalyst synthesized with conventional impregnation method, this novel catalyst showed a much higher activity and stability towards low-temperature water-gas shift reaction. Various characterization methods indicated the Cu nanoparticle in the catalyst had a superb small diameter around 3 nm, co-existent with abundant Cu+ sites. Based on the analysis via CO-adsorption, DRIFTS and in-situ mass spectrum, it was proved that CO could be adsorbed on Cu+ strongly and Cu+ acted as the active sites for CO activation. The reaction mechanism with dual active sites prevented the competitive adsorption of H2O and CO onto Cu0 sites, thereby improving the catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:Silica is commonly considered an inert support, and limitedresearchhas been concentrated on its role in constructing active metal-(hydr)-oxideinterfaces. Herein, we found that modifying the surface of nickelwith silica will significantly promote its catalytic performance towardthe water-gas shift reaction (WGSR), and the well-fabricatedNi(np)@PS-(H450) exhibits a WGSR rate of up to 725 +/- 7 mu mol(CO) g(cat) (-1) s(-1) at 350 degrees C, which is at the highest level comparedwith previously reported Ni-based catalysts. Combining the experimentand theory, we demonstrated that Ni delta+-O-SiO (x) interfaces divide the Ni surface into smalldomains consisting of contiguous Ni atoms. With the aid of an ensembleeffect, the adsorption energies of CO, OH, and H can be tuned intoappropriate ranges. Moreover, the Ni delta+-O-SiO (x) interfaces also inhibit the formation of adense NiO (or Ni-(OH)(2)) layer, thus endowing the catalystwith high stability. This study offers valuable insights into thecatalytic mechanism linking Ni and silica, which can aid in the developmentof high-performance Ni-based catalysts.
Effect of cobalt addition on platinum supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes for water-gas shift

Abstract:A series of cobalt-promoted Pt catalysts supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes was synthesized, and their performance was evaluated for the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Compared to the monometallic Pt catalyst, the WGS turnover rate (TOR) at 300 °C was promoted by a factor of 10 at a Pt:Co molar ratio of 1:3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and XRD showed the presence of a Pt3Co alloy along with a partially oxidized cobalt and a free cobalt metal phase after reduction pretreatment. In order to determine the dominant active site over the Co-promoted catalysts, selective leaching of partially oxidized Co (designated as CoOxHy) and Co metal was performed with a 5% wt. acetic acid solution, while preserving the Pt-rich phases. The WGS TOR at 300 °C for the Co-promoted catalysts after leaching was observed to be even lower than that of the monometallic Pt catalyst. Thus, the alloy formation was determined to be inconsequential towards promotion in the WGS TOR, while the dominant active site was determined to be a PtCo alloy in intimate contact with the CoOxHy phase. Combined Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and ab-initio thermodynamic phase diagrams point to a monolayer of CoOH being the most stable Co phase on Pt (111) under WGS conditions. Calculations of OH binding energies on Pt(111), Pt3Co(111), and at the interface between CoOH overlayers and Pt(111) shows that trends in the WGS activity of these catalysts are linked to the strength of OH binding, with the strongest OH binding found at the interface between CoOH and Pt, supporting the conclusion that a similar interface is the source of enhanced WGS activity in the PtCo bimetallic system.

Abstract:Water gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important process to remove CO contaminant in industrial hydrogen resources. The efficient catalyst that can work at low temperature is keenly desired to achieve high CO conversion from the viewpoint of thermodynamic equilibrium. Here, we develop a noble-metal-free catalyst of MoC nanorod (MoC NR) with the dominant (2 0 0) facet for the low-temperature WGS reaction. It exhibits a high performance with ∼ 100 % CO conversion at 175 °C, better than conventional MoC with the dominant (1 1 1) facet or the commercial Cu-based catalyst. Moreover, it shows rather better stability due to the presence of the dominant (2 0 0) facet. Various characterizations demonstrate that this facet facilitates MoC NR possessing higher removal capability of surface oxygen species to enhance the stability and lower activation energy to endow higher performance compared with conventional MoC. This study provides important implications for the rational design of cost-effective catalysts for the low-temperature WGS reaction.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has been regarded as one of the most important concepts in heterogeneous catalysis, which has been almost exclusively discussed in metal/oxide catalysts. Here, we show that gold/molybdenum carbide (Au/MoC x) catalysts feature highly dispersed Au overlayers, strong interfacial charge transfer between metal and support, and excellent activity in the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction (LT-WGSR), demonstrating the active SMSI state. Subsequent oxidation treatment results in strong aggregation of Au nanoparticles, weak interfacial electronic interaction, and poor LT-WGSR activity. The two interface states can be transformed into each other by alternative carbonization and oxidation treatments. This work reveals the active SMSI effect in metal/carbide catalysts induced by carbonization, which opens a new territory for this important concept.

Abstract:Activation of inert CO2 molecules for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is tackled by incorporating magnesium oxide as a support material for copper, forming a Cu/MgO supported catalyst. The RWGS performance is greatly improved when compared with pure Cu or carbon supported Cu (Cu/C). Operating under a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 300,000 mL·g‐1·h‐1, the Cu/MgO catalyst demonstrates high activity, maintaining over 70% equilibrium conversion and nearly 100% CO selectivity in a temperature range of 300‐600 °C. In contrast, both Cu/C and commercial Cu, even at ten‐times lower WHSV, can only achieve up to 40% of the equilibrium conversion and quickly deactivated due to sintering. Based on the studies of in‐situ temperature resolved infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption, the improved RWGS performance is attributed to the unique adsorption behavior of CO2 on Cu/MgO. Density functional theory studies provides a plausible explanation from a surface reaction perspective and reveals the spill‐over property of CO2 from MgO to Cu being critical.

Abstract:A series of CoMgAl mixed oxides with homogeneous Co dispersion were prepared using co-precipitation method. The CoMgAl composites were then doped with Mo species, giving Mo/Co(x)MgAl (x=Co/(Co + Mg)) catalysts for water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). In the synthesis of these catalysts, there is limited release of ammonia, which is traditionally common in the generation of Mo-Co catalysts for WGSR. The Mo/Co(x)MgAl catalysts were characterized using techniques such as XRD, N-2-physisorption, H-2-TPR, H2S-TPS, Raman, HRTEM and XPS. It is noted that the Mo/Co(5%)MgAl catalyst gives 91.2% CO conversion at 350 degrees C, which is close to the equilibrium CO conversion (91.7%). The H2S-TPS results disclose that there is decrease in activation energy for Mo sulfidation with increase of Co content in Mo/Co(x)MgAl, indicating the presence of Co promotes Mo sulfidation. The outcomes of HRTEM and XPS analyses reveal that the role of Co is to decrease stacking number and slab length of MoS2 moieties. The EDX elemental analysis suggests synergism between Co and MoS2, especially in the case of Mo/Co(5%)MgAl. With the formation of small-size MoS2 slabs and enhanced Co-MoS2 synergistic effect, the Mo/Co(5%)MgAl catalyst has high exposure of active sites, leading to improved catalytic activities in WGSR.
DFT insights into structural effects of Ni-Cu/CeO2 catalysts for CO selective reaction towards water-gas shift

Abstract:The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is a key step in hydrogen production, particularly to meet the high-purity H2 requirement of PEM fuel cells. The catalysts currently employed in large-scale WGS plants require a two-step process to overcome thermodynamic and kinetic limitations. Ni-Cu/CeO2 solids are promising catalysts for the one-step process required for small-scale applications, as the addition of Cu hinders undesired methanation reactions occurring on Ni/CeO2. In this work, we performed calculations on Ni4-xCux/CeO2(111) systems to evaluate the influence of cluster conformation on the selectivity towards water-gas shift. The structure and miscibility of CeO2-supported Ni4-xCux clusters were investigated and compared with those of gas-phase clusters to understand the effect of metal-support interactions. The adsorption of CO onto apical Ni and Cu atoms of Ni4-xCux/CeO2(111) systems was studied, and changes in the C-O bond strength were confirmed at the electronic level by investigating shifts in the 3σ and 1π orbitals. The selectivity towards WGS was evaluated using Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relations for the C-O activation energy. Overall, a strengthening of the C-O bond and an increase in CO dissociation energy were verified on Cu-containing clusters, explaining the improvement in selectivity of Ni4-xCux/CeO2(111) systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-dimensional M/MoS2 material system was constructed by supporting transition metal atoms M (M=Co, Ni, Cu) on the surface of MoS2. The structural properties, molecular adsorption and the reaction mechanism for water gas shift reaction (WGSR) were investigated based on DFT calculation. Compared with pristine MoS2, doping transition metal can make M/MoS2 more stable because the charge transfer between metal and MoS2 increases the polarization of Mo and S. The adsorption performance is significantly improved, which is conducive to the forward progress of the reaction. The band gap of materials is narrowed, which motivates MoS2 transforms to metal phase. The supporting metal can increase the charge transfer and the number of active sites in the system, which can effectively reduce the reaction energy barrier of WGS and improve the catalytic activity. The most potential WGSR mechanism of the three materials is the association mechanism, in which the HCOO* intermediate plays the leading role.

Active and Stable MgAl2O4 and Ni(SA)/MgAl2O4 Catalysts for the Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction

Abstract:Reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS) is an important process which plays a vital role in many CO2 utilization related reactions. Noble metals are the most active catalysts in RWGS, but the high price and low reserve strangled their applications. In the present work, we reported a non-transition-metal MgAl2O4 catalyst which showed outstanding activity and stability at high temperatures in the RWGS reaction and improved performance after doping of single atomic Nin+. The catalyst can obtain 46% of CO2 conversion in durability test of 75 h at 800 °C under high weight hourly space velocities (225 000 ml g-1 h-1). The adsorption sites, possible reaction route, and effects of Nin+ single atoms on the (111) surface of MgAl2O4 for RWGS were investigated by in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations. The results indicated that the rate determining reaction step of RWGS on MgAl2O4 and Ni (SA)/MgAl2O4 were both the reaction of OH* + H* → H2O* + *, but the energy barrier was significantly reduced after introducing single atomic Nin+. Nin+ atoms can increase the hydroxyl coverage on the surface of catalyst and Al3+ sites near the Nin+ ion are considered as the predominant active sites for RWGS reactions.

Abstract:Transforming CO 2 to CO via reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction is widely regarded as a promising technique for improving the efficiency and economics of CO 2 utilization processes. Moreover, it is also considered as a pathway towards e-fuels. Cu-oxide catalysts are widely explored for low-temperature RWGS reactions; nevertheless, they tend to deactivate significantly under applied reaction conditions due to the agglomeration of copper particles at elevated temperatures. Herein, we have synthesized homogeneously distributed Cu metallic nanoparticles supported on Mo 2 C for the RWGS reaction by a unique approach of in situ carburization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using a Cu-based MOF i.e. HKUST-1 encapsulating molybdenum-based polyoxometalates. The newly derived Na–Cu–Mo 2 C nanocomposite catalyst system exhibits excellent catalytic performance with a CO production rate of 3230.0 mmol g cat −1 h −1 with 100% CO selectivity. Even after 250 h of a stability test, the catalyst remained active with more than 80% of its initial activity.

Abstract:In this paper, CoMo supported on Nb modified MgAl mixed oxide by calcination of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared using wet impregnation method. The fresh calcined catalysts were further sulfided by H2S/H2 and tested for water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). The physicochemical properties of fresh calcined catalysts were characterized by various adsorption and bulk techniques like XRD, ICP, N2-physisorption, CO2-TPD, H2-TPR, H2S-TPS and HRTEM. It is found that the addition of Nb does not affect the formation of LDHs, but changes the reduction and sulfidation behavior of Mo species on oxidic catalyst as well as the dispersion of MoS2 phase on the sulfided catalyst. The CoMo/Nb(5%)MgAl catalyst shows the lowest apparent sulfidation activation energy, consumes the highest amount of H2S and thus has the highest catalytic activity in WGS reaction.
Novel Bimetallic Cu–Pd Nanoparticles as Highly Active Low-Temperature WGS Catalysts

Abstract:Water gas shift (WGS) reaction is a key industrial process to produce hydrogen from CO and H2O. However, conventional Cu-based WGS catalysts are easily deactivated by sulfur compounds, which are ubiquitous in syngas. Cu–Pd nanoparticles of size 8–10 nm were synthesized as a function of the Cu/Pd ratios and investigated as promising sulfur-tolerant WGS catalysts. Significant improvement in the WGS activity was observed in the Cu–Pd catalysts after calcination at 800 °C in air. Pd addition enhanced the reducibility of CuO and Cu0 dispersion and limited the formation of CuAl2O4 spinel during calcination at 800 °C. The additional reducible and catalytically active CuO species was generated by the Cu migration from the CuO shell covering the Cu–Pd nanoparticles onto the γ-Al2O3 support during the 800 °C calcination. The optimal Cu–Pd catalyst characterized by the CuO/CuAl2O4 ratio of 2.37 showed the highest WGS activity, thermal stability, and sulfur tolerance among all Cu-based catalysts reported in this study.

Abstract:The hollow hierarchical structure Cu@S and CuFe0.5@S catalysts were successfully synthesized through the "dissolution-recrystallization" (D-R) method for the reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS). The encapsulated catalysts had a hierarchical porous structure and better dispersion of Cu particles than the Cu-S and CuFe0.5-S samples prepared via the conventional impregnation method. Furthermore, CuFe0.5-S and CuFe0.5@S catalysts showed higher CO2 conversion and 100% selectivity of CO at the entire temperature range investigated in this work compared to the monometallic catalysts Cu-S and Cu@S. Interestingly, the reaction activity of all the samples increased according to the sequence: CuFe0.5@S > CuFe0.5-S > Cu@S > Cu-S at 400–550 °C under atmospheric pressure. These results indicate that the higher dispersion of encapsulation structure and the enhanced surface basicity derived from the addition of Fe play crucial roles in enhancing the catalytic performance of Cu-based catalysts in the RWGS reaction.

On Au(111), CsO x exhibits diverse nanostructures at varying coverages, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Clusters of cesium oxide (Cs2O2) nucleate at elbow sites of the Au(111) herringbone when θCs is less than 0.1 ML. Subsequently, these clusters transform into two-dimensional (2D) islands (Cs2O, Cs2O2, CsO2) as the cesium coverage increases (θCs > 0.1 ML). Both types of CsO x nanostructures enable the WGS process on Au(111). The highest activity was seen for the cesium oxide clusters which facilitated the partial dissociation of water and binding of CO. The COads and OHads groups were not strongly bound and probably reacted to yield a short-lived HOCO intermediate that led to gaseous H2 and CO2. The 2D islands of CsO x also enabled the WGS but their efficiency was reduced due to the formation of cesium hydroxide compounds (limiting mobility of OH groups) and the generation of CO3 and C species (blocking of active centers). The fact that the performance of the CsO x /Au(111) catalysts changed dramatically with variations in the chemical properties of the CsO x nanostructures indicates that the alkali oxide was an integral part of the active phase, playing a central role in the activation and conversion of the reactants. To attach the label of “promoter” to CsO x is a simplification that does not help in the design and optimization of catalysts for C1 chemistry. To achieve a rational design, one must consider the structural and chemical properties of the alkali oxide.

Abstract:The reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction offers a sustainable approach for CO 2 utilization, yielding CO for vital catalytic processes. This study compares the catalytic performance of exsolved Cu- and Ni-encapsulated silicalite-1 (S-1) catalysts against those prepared by impregnation methods. Exsolved catalysts, characterized by confined metal nanoparticles and distinct surface chemistry, exhibited higher CO selectivity and lower activation energies of CO formation than their impregnated counterparts. Surface and structural analyses revealed that the exsolution process enhanced RWGS activity, driven by altered metal-support interactions and unique adsorption behaviors, offering insights for improving the efficiency of RWGS catalysis.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are commonly applied in low-temperature water gas shift (WGS) reactions, owing to their low cost and high catalytic activity. The influence of different Cu surfaces on catalytic activity and mechanism over the WGS reaction remains unclear. In this work, the effect of different structures of surfaces on the WGS mechanism is studied using density functional theory (DFT). Three surface terminations (Cu(100), Cu(111), and Cu(211)) of Cu are considered, and the coordination number (CN) of the active Cu site is in the range from 7 to 9. The most stable surface is Cu(211). Then, d-band center values are calculated, which decrease in the following sequence: Cu(211) > Cu(100) > Cu(111). This shows that d-band center values decrease with increasing coordination number. The increase in the centers of the d-band leads to an increase in the adsorption strength of CO and H2O adsorbates, which is in line with the theory of the d-band center. In addition, the further calculated mechanism for WGS reaction over three different Cu surfaces illustrates that the carboxyl path is the most favorable mechanism, and the rate-determining step is H2O dissociation. Cu(211) shows excellent WGS catalytic performance, better than the Cu(100) and Cu(111) surfaces. This work provides theoretical insights into the rational design of highly active Cu-based catalysts toward WGS reaction.

Abstract:CO2 reduction to CO as raw material for conversion to chemicals and gasoline fuels via the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction is generally acknowledged to be a promising strategy that makes the CO2 utilization process more economical and efficient. Cu-based catalysts are low-cost and have high catalytic performance but have insufficient stability due to hardening at high temperatures. In this work, a series of Cu-based catalysts supported by MoOx were synthesized for noble metal-free RWGS reactions, and the effects of MoOx support on catalyst performance were investigated. The results show that the introduction of MoOx can effectively improve the catalytic performance of RWGS reactions. The obtained Cu/MoOx (1:1) catalyst displays excellent activity with 35.85% CO2 conversion and 99% selectivity for CO at 400 °C. A combination of XRD, XPS, and HRTEM characterization results demonstrate that MoOx support enhances the metal-oxide interactions with Cu through electronic modification and geometric coverage, thus obtaining highly dispersed copper and more Cu-MoOx interfaces as well as more corresponding oxygen vacancies.
