Abstract:A novel electrochemical device for the sensitive determination of dopamine was developed based on a carbon paste electrode with polymeric ferric sulfate doped in the carbon paste and a carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube thin film on the surface. The modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The conditions for the preparation of electrode were optimized. The carbon nanotubes were shown to be stable on the surface of carbon paste electrode. The novel electrochemical device provided excellent activity toward dopamine. Amperometry and differential pulse voltammetry were used for the determination of dopamine in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer with a long linear range from 0.8 to 261 mu M and a detection limit of 0.2 mu M. The modified electrode showed excellent repeatability, good stability, and satisfactory reproducibility, thus demonstrating potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Catecholamines are neurotransmitters in the peripheral and central nervous systems, which maintain the normal physiological state of the human body. Studies have shown that the occurrence of many diseases are often accompanied by changes in catecholamine levels. Clinically, the detection of catecholamine levels in human plasma or urine can assist in the diagnosis of endocrine-related diseases and neurological diseases. However, catecholamines are easily oxidized, and the content in human body is very low. So the rapid detection of catecholamines is very important for the prevention and diagnosis of related diseases. In this paper, the electrochemical response characteristics of Ti(3)C(2)Tx MXene and noble metal nanoparticles modified Ti(3)C(2)Tx to dopamine (one type of catecholamine) were explored. The results shown that Ti(3)C(2)Tx would undergo irreversible oxidation at the anode potential and the single Ti(3)C(2)Tx modified electrode was not suitable for the detection of dopamine. So we further explored the modification of Pt and Au nanoparticles on the Ti(3)C(2)Tx/GCE electrode, and the experimental results shown that Au/Ti(3)C(2)Tx/GCE had higher sensitivity for measuring dopamine, while Pt/Ti(3)C(2)Tx/GCE had a larger linear range. Both electrodes had good stability and repeatability and could be used for the detection of catecholamines.
Sensitive detection of dopamine using a platinum microelectrode modified by reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles

Abstract:Platinum wire microelectrodes generally exhibited properties of low sensitivity but are easily contaminated where it comes to dopamine detection. In this paper, a platinum wire modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to electrochemically detect dopamine in vivo. Electrochemical performances of microelectrodes (before and after surface modification) were investigated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that AuNPs/rGO composites significantly increase the electrode surface area and improve the electrocatalytic property of platinum wires. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent sensitivity for dopamine detection (LOD=16.57nM), as well as ascendant selectivity (simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid), reproducibility (R.S.D.=3.98%), and stability (≫100 repetitive potential sweeps, 1-week lifespan). In vivo experiments showed that the proposed AuNPs/rGO electrode was also capable of detecting dopamine in complex physiological environments, particularly in the striatum of anesthetized rats. Hence, the proposed electrodes provided a potential application in in vivo multiplexing neurotransmitter detection in further research.

Abstract:Neurotransmitters are essential chemical messengers required for proper brain function, and any changes in their concentrations can lead to neuronal diseases. Therefore, sensitive and selective detection is crucial. This study presents a fast and simple colorimetric method for dopamine detection using three reagent solutions: AgNP and MPA, Ag/Au nanocomposite, and mercaptophenylacetic acid. TEM images showed a narrow distribution of Ag and Au nanoparticles with average sizes of 20 nm and 13 nm, respectively, with gold nanoparticles bound to the edges of silver nanoparticles. A paper-based biosensor was created using manual wax printing for the colorimetric detection of dopamine. Visual detection onsite showed color changes with both the silver nanoparticles and mercaptophenylacetic acid mixture and the silver–gold nanoparticle composite. Electrochemical detection using a glassy carbon electrode modified with 8 mM mercaptophenylacetic acid demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity towards dopamine, with a peak in the range of 0.7–0.9 V. Interferences were minimized, ensuring high sensitivity and selective detection of dopamine.

Abstract:A facile electrochemical sensing nanoplatform for detection of ultralow dopamine (DA) concentrations is developed through modification of cobalt-benzene tricarboxylic acid (Co-BTC) derived cobalt-carbon-matrix (Co-C-matrix). To enhance surface reactions and enzyme-like activities involved in interaction with DA, the structural integration of hybrid Co-C-matrix into Co-BTC as metal-organic framework is investigated, resulting in nanostructured transducing media with high sensitivity and selectivity as the catalyst. The Co-C-matrix nanoplatform exhibited the improved performance based on electrocatalytic oxidation of DA with high sensitivity of 7176 μA mM-1 cm-2 and low detection limit of 10 nM. Furthermore, the linearity of an amperometry peak toward DA concentration over a wide concentration range of 10-25 μM was observed under optimal conditions. Excellent selectivity in the presence of potential interferents and operational stability in ambient air for 30 days as well as under environmental conditions for the electrochemical oxidation of dopamine were achieved. The practical feasibility of these non-enzymatic biosensors is demonstrated on real samples, where DA is detected in human serum with outstanding recovery of up to 100%. The synergetic effect of Co atoms dispersed in the matrix of the carbon nanohybrid results in abundant active sites for DA oxidation and electron transfer pathways.

Abstract:Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter responsible for the functions and activities of multiple systems in human. Electrochemical detection of DA has the advantages of fast analysis and cost-effectiveness, while a regular electrode probe is restricted to laboratory use because the probe size is too large to be suitable for an in vivo or in vitro analysis. In this study, we have developed porphyrin-based metal organic framework (MOF525) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based composites to modify microelectrode for DA detection. Two types of PEDOT monomers with different functional groups were investigated in this study. By varying the monomer ratios, electrolyte concentrations, and electropolymerization temperature, it was found that the PEDOT monomer containing carboxylic group facilitated the formation of regular morphology during the electropolymerization process. The uniform morphology of the PEDOT promoted the electron transmission efficiency in the same direction, while the MOF525 provided a large reactive surface area for electrocatalysis of DA. Thus, the MOF525/PEDOT composite improved the sensitivity-to-noise ratio of DA signaling, where the sensitivity reached 11 nA/μM in a good linear range of 4–100 μM. In addition, porphyrin-based MOF could also increase the selectivity to DA against other common clinical interferences, such as ascorbic acid and uric acid. The as-synthesized microelectrode modified with MOF525/PEDOT in this study exhibited great potential in real time analysis.

Abstract:Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter in the kidney, cardiovascular system, and central nervous system, which abnormality is associated with many diseases. In this work, we synthesized a functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube/silver nanoparticle (f-MWCNT/AgNP) nanocomposites as the biosensing material to detect DA. The SEM, EDS, and TEM characterizations indicated the success of the functionalization process with MWCNT as the base material. The values of the linear range, the limit of detection (LOD), and the selectivity of the nanocomposite were all obtained from the Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) measurements. The obtained LOD value was 0.2778 µM in the linear range of 0–8 µM, which is lower than the required concentration value for detecting DA in human urine (0.3–3 µM). The biosensor’s high selectivity on DA with the presence of other human-related biofluids was also reported. These results show that f-MWCNT/AgNP nanocomposites are a promising biosensor material for the detection of DA.

Abstract:Overoxidized polypyrrole/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OPPy/MWNTs) modified electrode has been developed for sensitively detecting dopamine (DA). OPPy films developed outside MWNTs might have a porous morphology. Thus, OPPy/MWNTs films developed by this method do not reject ascorbic acid (AA). However, OPPy/MWNTs modified electrode shows largely enhancing oxidative current responses of DA. When combined with liquid chromatography, it not only obtains a low detection limit of 7.5×10−10molL−1 for DA, but also improves the selectivity of DA detection. Mechanisms for the enhancement are also well discussed in this paper. With this approach, microdialysis has been employed for successful assessment of DA in rat striatum.
Engineering FeOOH/Fe2O3@Carbon Interfaces with Biomass‐Derived Carbon Nanodot/Iron Colloids for Efficient Redox‐Modulated Dopamine Voltammetric Detection

Abstract:The Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couple is effective for voltammetric detection of trace dopamine (DA). However, achieving adequate concentrations with high electroactive surface area (ECSA), DA affinity, and fast interfacial charge transfer is challenging. Consequently, most reported Fe‐based sensors have a high nanomolar range detection limit (LOD). Herein, we address these limitations by manipulating the phase and morphology of FeOOH/Fe2O3 heterojunctions anchored on sp2‐carbon. FeOOH/Fe2O3 is synthesized by variable temperature aging of unique Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2‐carbon colloidal nanoparticles, which form via chelation between biomass‐derived carbon nanodots (CNDs) and Fe2+ ions. At 27°C and 120°C, Fe5H9O15/Fe2O3@sp2‐carbon transforms into β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanoparticles and α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheet, respectively. The β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 interface exhibits higher eg orbital electron occupancy than α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3, thereby facilitating oxygen adsorption and the generation of Fe2+/Fe3+ sites near the polarization potential of DA. This facilitates interfacial electron transfer between Fe3+ and DA. Moreover, its nanoparticle morphology enhances ECSA and DA adsorption compared to α‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 nanosheets. With a LOD of ~3.11 nM, β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3 surpasses the lower threshold in humans (~10 nM) and matches noble‐metal sensors. Furthermore, it exhibits selective detection of DA over 10 biochemicals in urine. Therefore, the β‐FeOOH/Fe2O3@sp2‐C platform holds promise as a low‐cost, easy‐to‐synthesize, and practical voltammetric DA monitor.

Abstract:Reported here is the design of an electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) based on a screen print carbon electrode modified with a sulphonated polyether ether ketone-iron (III) oxide composite (SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK). L. serica leaf extract was used in the synthesis of iron (III) oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs). Successful synthesis of Fe3O4NP was confirmed through characterization using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet–visible light (UV–VIS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of Fe3O4/SPEEK in 0.1 M of phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing 5 mM of potassium ferricyanide (III) solution (K3[Fe(CN)6]). An increase in peak current was observed at the nanocomposite modified electrode SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK) but not SPCE and SPCE-Fe3O4, which could be ascribed to the presence of SPEEK. CV and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were employed in the electroxidation of dopamine (0.1 mM DA). The detection limit (LoD) of 7.1 μM and 0.005 μA/μM sensitivity was obtained for DA at the SPCE-Fe3O4/SPEEK electrode with concentrations ranging from 5–50 μM. LOD competes well with other electrodes reported in the literature. The developed sensor demonstrated good practical applicability for DA in a DA injection with good resultant recovery percentages and RSDs values.

Abstract:A Ni-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) modified electrode was fabricated for electrochemical detection of dopamine. The Ni-MOF was synthesized by ionothermal synthesis method using an ionic liquid as a template. The morphology and composition of the Ni-MOF were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Electrochemical responses of the Ni-MOF modified electrode toward dopamine were performed using differential pulse voltammetry. The electrochemical sensing performance of the Ni-MOF modified electrode toward dopamine was improved by the introduction of ionic liquid with a wide linear range (0.2–100 μmol L−1), and a low detection limit (60 nmol L−1). Further studies indicated that the modified electrode exhibited great selectivity to dopamine in complex mixtures, and the Ni-MOF modified electrode also has excellent stability and reproducibility. Moreover, the analysis of real samples confirmed that the modified electrode has a certain reliability.

Abstract:A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on nitrogen-doped graphene (N-G)/nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) nanocomposites has been developed for selective determination of dopamine (DA). NiTsPc was immobilized on N-G matrix via π-π interaction, while N-G provided a compatible microenvironment for NiTsPc to enhance electron transfer and to retain its electrocatalytic activity as well. The N-G/NiTsPc nanocomposite was characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The proposed modified electrode presented superior catalytic efficiency for DA in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) owing to the synergistic effect of N-G and NiTsPc. The sensors also exhibited a wide linear range from 1×10−7 to 2×10−4M and a limit of detection as low as 100nM with high sensitivity of 88.9μAmM−1.

Abstract:Accurate and sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) is fundamental to monitor and diagnose certain neurological diseases. Herein, highly ordered mesoporous ZnFe2O4 (OM-ZnFe2O4) is prepared via a facile nanocasting method and shows the highly sensitive in the electrochemical detection of DA. The optimized OM-ZnFe2O4-40 shows the most excellent activity for DA oxidation in a wide linear range from 2 to 600 nM with a quick response time of 5 s, high sensitivity of 0.094 nA nM(-1) and a lower detection limit of 0.4 nM (S/N = 3). The electrode modified with OM-ZnFe2O4 is further successfully used to monitor the increase of DA concentration induced by K+-stimulation of living PC12 cells in a neurological environment. This work offers a simple and powerful strategy for designing electrodes for detecting DA in biological systems. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Several neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease have become a serious impediment to aging people nowadays. One of the efficient methods used to monitor these neurological disorders is the detection of neurotransmitters such as dopamine. Metal materials, such as gold and platinum, are widely used in this electrochemical detection method; however, low sensitivity and linearity at low dopamine concentrations limit the use of these materials. To overcome these limitations, a silver nanoparticle (SNP) modified electrode covered by graphene oxide for the detection of dopamine was newly developed in this study. For the first time, the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was modified using SNPs and graphene oxide sequentially through the electrochemical deposition method. The developed biosensor provided electrochemical signal enhancement at low dopamine concentrations in comparison with previous biosensors. Therefore, our newly developed SNP modified electrode covered by graphene oxide can be used to monitor neurological diseases through electrochemical signal enhancement at low dopamine concentrations.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor applied for dopamine (DA) detection was constructed. An easy static way was used to synthesize bimetallic CoNi-MOF. Next, it was mixed with graphene oxide (GO) under ultrasound to get a uniform suspension. Subsequently, the solution was coated on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to form CoNi-MOF@ERGO/GCE by the electrochemical reduction method. The interaction between CoNi-MOF and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) enhances the electrocatalytic performance for DA detection. CoNi-MOF@ERGO/GCE has a wider linear range (0.1-400 mu M) and a lower detection limit (0.086 mu M) under optimum conditions. Furthermore, it has been applied to test DA in human serum samples. The results reveal that the DA sensor shows excellent performance, which will provide a novel idea for more sensitive and quicker DA detection.

Abstract:In this study, we produced a nanocomposite composed of Ni-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles with precise morphologies that are adorned on multiwall carbon nanotubes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to evaluate the produced material. FE-SEM and HR-TEM analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of Ni-Pd across f-MWCNT surfaces. The findings reveal that incorporating Ni-Pd nanoparticles on the surface of f-MWCNT can improve catalytic activity over Ni NPs. The manufactured electrode has garnered a lot of interest in detecting and quantifying dopamine because of its demonstrated potential for instantaneous response, real-time measurements, increased selectivity, and sensitivity. Dopamine (DA) electrochemical activity in the presence of phosphate buffer solution (PBS) as an electrolyte at pH 7 was tested utilizing CV, DPV, and amperometry techniques to explore the sensor's performance. The finding presented here reveals a simple strategy for creating a modified electrode. The Ni-Pd/f-MWCNT-modified electrode sensor reveals a wide linear range of dopamine (2–400 μM), with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.05 μM, limit of quantification (LOQ) 0.166 μM, and sensitivity 2.116 μA/μM cm 2 .

Abstract:Nanosheet like nickel metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) have been synthesized using solvothermal route at room temperature. Functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been embedded into these MOFs through equilibration to prepare the composite. The composite (Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs) has been used as a modifier in sensor fabrication on a glassy carbon electrode surface and successfully applied in dopamine measurement through cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry techniques. The composite has exhibited enhanced electrochemical performance with a very low detection limit of 0.017 μM. The protocol showed wide linearity in the concentration range 2 – 200 μM with a sensitivity of 17.14 μAμM-1cm-2. The proposed electrochemical platform exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity in dopamine sensing which has been successfully applied to real sample matrices like human blood serum and injection.

Abstract:Hollow nanostructures have gained much attention in the electroanalytical field. This work describes the synthesis of CoS2–FeS2 nanoparticle-decorated hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanocubes (CoS2–FeS2/HNCC) by a direct sulfidation of the Co–Fe Prussian blue analogue at a high temperature. By integrating dual-phase metal sulfides and a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, this hollow nanocubic structure provides rich catalytic centers, enhanced conductivity, large surface area, and 3D-porous channels, which all contribute to the adsorption and catalysis of dopamine. The CoS2–FeS2/HNCC-modified glassy carbon electrode demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic activity for dopamine. Under the optimal parameters, the electrochemical sensor exhibits a wide detection range (0.05–90 μM), a low limit of detection (9.3 nM, S/N = 3), and a high sensitivity (91.6 μA μM–1 cm–2) along with excellent selectivity, reproducibility, reusability, and stability. This method has also been applied for the detection of dopamine in human urine samples and displays satisfactory results.

Abstract:Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in the body and closely related to many neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the detection of dopamine is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, screening of drugs and unraveling of relevant pathogenic mechanisms. However, the low concentration of dopamine in the body and the complexity of the matrix make the accurate detection of dopamine challenging. Herein, an electrochemical sensor is constructed based on ternary nanocomposites consisting of one-dimensional Pt nanowires, two-dimensional MXene nanosheets, and three-dimensional porous carbon. The Pt nanowires exhibit excellent catalytic activity due to the abundant grain boundaries and highly undercoordinated atoms; MXene nanosheets not only facilitate the growth of Pt nanowires, but also enhance the electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity; and the porous carbon helps induce significant adsorption of dopamine on the electrode surface. In electrochemical tests, the ternary nanocomposite-based sensor achieves an ultra-sensitive detection of dopamine (S/N = 3) with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 28 nM, satisfactory selectivity and excellent stability. Furthermore, the sensor can be used for the detection of dopamine in serum and in situ monitoring of dopamine release from PC12 cells. Such a highly sensitive nanocomposite sensor can be exploited for in situ monitoring of important neurotransmitters at the cellular level, which is of great significance for related drug screening and mechanistic studies.
