Abstract:Waste material is an inevitable outcome of most human and industrial activities, lacking enduring value. A significant amount of waste is being generated from various sources such as industrial and domestic activities, driven by population growth and economic expansion. To address these challenges, methods like re-use and recycling are crucial in mitigating the adverse impacts of waste by reducing landfill deposition. Recycling not only helps in conserving natural resources but also diminishes energy consumption. Recently, there has been increasing interest in re-using waste materials as substitutes in geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. For the efficient utilization of waste, it is essential to systematically understand its characterization, various technical aspects, and environmental implications, along with their interrelationships. This study aims to explore the potential of using different by-products and waste materials such as fly ash, shredded waste tires, and recycled concrete aggregates as geomaterials. By doing so, it endeavours to contribute to sustainable practices in geotechnical engineering. Overall, the re-use of waste materials constitutes a significant area of research aimed at fostering sustainability in geotechnical engineering practices.

Abstract:The emergence of geosynthetics changed many aspects of the project and construction of civil and environmental works. Due to the existence of a wide variety of products and the constant advancement in the development and dissemination of new technologies. These materials are applied in different engineering solutions, highlighting the possibility of using recyclable and biodegradable materials and executing geotechnical and environmental works ranging from the control of erosion to the protection of groundwater. In this context, this work presents a literature review on the use of recyclable and biodegradable materials as geosynthetic products, as well as their association with traditional geosynthetics for solutions in engineering works. The review was carried out through the platforms Google Scholar and Portal of Journals of CAPES, using keywords and Boolean connectors as descriptors. It is observed that there is a potential for the use of recyclable and biodegradable materials as geosynthetics. However, there is still a need for a careful assessment concerning the benefits, limitations, and impacts caused by the use of these wastes.

Abstract:The built environment serves as a dynamic interface through which human society and the ecosystem interact and influence each other. Understanding this interdependence is a key to understanding sustainability as it applies to civil engineering. There is a growing consensus that delivering a sustainable built environment starts with incorporating sustainability thoughts at the planning and design stages of an infrastructure construction project. Geotechnical engineering can significantly influence the sustainability of infrastructure development because of its early position in the construction process. In this paper, the scope of geotechnical engineering towards sustainable development of civil infrastructure is reviewed. The philosophies and definitions of sustainability as applicable to geotechnical engineering are discussed. A comprehensive review of the research and case studies performed in geotechnical engineering, in relation to sustainable development, is presented in an effort to outline the scope and goals of sustainable geotechnical engineering.

Abstract:Civil construction causes environmental impact, as it consumes natural resources and generates a large amount of solid waste, raising concerns about the survival of future populations. Therefore, there has been a search for sustainable materials, to add non-conventional materials to the mass that forms bricks, blocks, pavements or make up walls in mud constructions, saving cement, sand, lime and stone. This work aims to present the aggregates that have already been experimented, tested, and that can compose the raw material with less disastrous results to the environment. A review was made in the literature, where articles, monographs, dissertations that address the subject were found. From them, a collection of the viability, opportunity and positivity of the use of aggregates was made, bringing a comparative result. The research can be useful as a basic element to guide those who intend to apply such materials, as well as to trigger and subsidize new studies, with new tests and experiments, both of these materials presented, and others that may still arise.

Abstract:The paper presents part of the international research, between Italy and Morocco, on the earth constructions technologies. Although history demonstrates many applications there isn’t a large use nowadays. The aim of this study is therefore to understand why such promising material today is not widely used and applied only for niche situations. Through the analysis of earth construction technologies from those linked to tradition to more contemporary ones, it was possible to understand how the material was adapted locally to different building needs according to the climatic context and the available resources. In addition, the international regulatory framework is also analyzed, in order to understand the current level of development of regulations for the use of earth-based technologies. Morocco is a country with a deep and widespread knowledge of earthen construction, and the contemporary construction regulatory framework provides for its use. Through a Moroccan case study, it was possible to experiment the use of rammed earth masonry as infill, respecting contemporary construction standards. In addition, the application of BIM modeling was tested, in order to make this construction technique meet the requirements of the contemporary building process, making it faster, controlled in terms of performance and economically advantageous. The results of research, including the preparation of an abacus of the earth walls used with 123 elements and the related 17 characteristic information, for a total of 8000 m of earth, demonstrate the ability of this traditional building system to be managed and controlled in a contemporary way.

Abstract:Searching for alternative material options to reduce the extraction of natural resources is essential for promoting a more sustainable world. This is especially relevant in construction and infrastructure projects, where significant volumes of materials are used. This paper aims to introduce three alternative materials, crushed ground glass (GG), recycled gypsum (GY) and crushed lime waste (CLW), byproducts of construction industry geomaterials, to enhance the mechanical properties of clay soil in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. These materials show promise as cementitious and frictional agents, combined with soil and cement. Rigorous testing, including tests on unconfined compressive strength (qu) and initial stiffness (Go) and with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals a correlation between strength, stiffness and the novel porosity/binder index (η/Civ) and provides mixed design equations for the novel geomaterials. Micro-level analyses show the formation of hydrated calcium silicates and complex interactions among the waste materials, cement and clay. These new geomaterials offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cementation, contributing to geotechnical solutions in vulnerable tropical regions.

Abstract:Challenges related to sustainability arise in all areas of human activity, but with a significant impact on the environment considering that the construction industry is held accountable for nearly one-third of the world's final energy consumption. The aim of this paper is to assess through the use of the Bob–Dencsak specific model a sustainable slope design taking into account environmental, economic, and safety variables. Thus, analysis was performed on four intervention works, two versions of reinforced concrete retaining walls and two versions of reinforced soil with a biaxial geogrid, which ensure the stability of a slope that serves as a base for an access road to an ecological landfill located in Alba County, Romania. The study's analysis points out that reinforced soil retaining walls are far more sustainable, providing the best sustainability indices, which is also supported by the impact of geogrids compared to reinforced concrete, thus resulting in the finding that reinforced concrete is less sustainable, achieving increases of up to 23% for embodied energy and 66% of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Finally, the paper provides recommendations for future research on the sustainability assessment of slopes, with the intention of reducing environmental damage, while keeping costs to a minimum.

Abstract:Soil has long been one of the most widely used building materials globally. The evolution of soil-based construction materials has seen steady improvement over the centuries, even as traditional materials have given way to newer options like reinforced concrete. Nonetheless, soil-based construction has maintained its relevance and, in recent decades, has garnered increased attention due to sustainability concerns and renewed research interest. Among the innovative earth-based materials, shot-earth (SE) stands out as one of the most advanced. Research on SE has facilitated efficient handling of soil variability in mix design and provided structural engineers with relevant models for dimensioning and detailing reinforced SE constructions. This paper focuses on studying the durability characteristics of various types of SE to ascertain their ability to withstand environmental degradation over their intended lifespan. The tests conducted indicate that SE can serve as a viable construction material in numerous real-life scenarios, offering a sustainable alternative to existing materials.

Abstract:The stability of slopes is a critical challenge in various civil engineering projects, such as embankments, cut-slopes, landfills, dams, transportation infrastructure, and riverbank restoration. Stabilizing slopes using bioengineering methods is a sustainable approach that limits the negative impact of engineering works; such methods should be implemented and adopted worldwide. Geosynthetic materials and plant roots are sustainable for preventing erosion and surface landslides. The plants used for this paper are known to have beneficial effects on erosion control, namely Festuca arundinaceous, Dactylis glomerata, Phleum pratensis, Trifolium pratense, and Trifolium repens. Using vegetation as a bio-reinforcement method is often more cost effective and environmentally friendly than traditional engineering solutions, making a more sustainable engineering solution for shallow slope stabilization applications. The paper presents the erosion process that occurred on sandy slopes protected by organic soil layers and geosynthetic materials under rainfall simulation in scaled model tests.

Abstract:Sustainability is a core topic for all sectors including geotechnical engineering (e.g., design of foundations, earthworks structures, and pavements for major infrastructure and building projects). Despite being comprised of environmental, economic, and social pillars, most sustainability studies in this area have focused on the first. Furthermore, social impacts and the three pillars integration are little explored. As a result, there is a lack of systemic and holistic assessments of innovative geotechnical alternatives. This research advances in this area by performing a complete sustainability assessment and integration of the environmental, economic, and social pillars of two expansive soil stabilization alternatives: (i) sugar cane bagasse ash combined with hydrated eggshell lime alkali-activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and (ii) Portland cement. Individual analyses were carried out to determine the environmental, economic, and social impacts, and the single sustainability index. Alkali-activated binder dosages showed higher impacts in 4 out of 10 environmental categories. For both binders, high-density/low-binder dosages contributed to environmental and economic sustainability as they require lower quantities of raw materials and diesel for materials transportation. The total costs of alkali-activated binder dosages ( 154.45) were higher than that of Portland cement ( 54.04), mainly due to the high cost of NaOH acquisition. However, the alkali-activated binder dosages implied lower carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions and thus lower social cost of CO 2 . The alternative binder presented a higher positive social impact. The alkali-activated high-density/low binder dosage is the most sustainable soil stabilization strategy.

Abstract:In spite of the development foreseen by our economy over this century, abundant quantity of waste materials is being generated in various sectors such as transportation, power generation and industries. Meanwhile, constructional activities across the globe demand virgin natural materials. This paper emphasis a review on the use of some of the waste materials like Fly ash (FA), Bottom ash (BA), Tire derived Materials (TDM) in lieu of natural geomaterials as lightweight fills for retaining walls and embankments. A brief review of the engineering behavior of these waste materials which makes them a competent fill material will be presented here. Further full scale and model studies of embankments and retaining walls utilizing these wastes for fill application is also emphasized. The results of these studies have shown that these waste materials can act as competent fill material for geotechnical applications.

Abstract:The preparation stage is critical to the success of any construction project. This also applies to projects planned to be implemented in Natura 2000 areas, which cover approx. 18% of the total land area of the EU. The permit for the implementation of a project in an area included in the European ecological network should be granted after a thorough analysis of its impact on a Natura 2000 area. Such analysis should concern construction and material solutions, as well as executive and as-built solutions for objects falling within the scope of the project and take into account the concept of sustainable development. The research showed that the precautionary principle should be supplemented with the concept of sustainable development and with the assessment of material solutions in planned buildings. The article presents the results of research on the need to take into account material issues in the environmental conditions of building structures. A survey was conducted with the participation of 47 experts, and the result of the research is the development of an innovative checklist module for the qualification of a project for habitat assessment, taking into account questions about sustainable building materials. The conducted research has shown which aspects related to the use of building materials are the most important. These are material solutions that provide for the use of natural raw materials and construction materials (unprocessed), the use of materials and raw materials from local producers in order to reduce transport and conducting an energy assessment of the materials used.

Abstract:In terms of the impact of human activity on the natural environment, civil engineering is one of the most significant productive pursuits. The production and use of building materials, the advancement of engineering and construction, the use of the project after it is completed, the removal of discarded components, and other procedures all require significant energy expenditure and ongoing waste generation, which can have severe consequences for the natural environment. To meet the demands of both economic and social development, advancements in civil engineering must be made while also protecting the natural world, limiting the use of natural resources, and promoting sustainable development. This study examines the long-term strategy in civil engineering and explores the role of environmental sustainability throughout the various stages of the civil design process, including the conceptual stage, the technical design stage, and the building stage. The research finds that the construction industry should adopt practices that adhere to sustainability principles such as environmentally-friendly design, durability, energy efficiency, waste reduction, improved indoor air quality, water conservation, and the use of sustainable building materials in construction.

Abstract:The construction industry is criticized for causing adverse impacts on the environment. To minimize these impacts, the industry has been seeking to introduce sustainable practices throughout its entire production chain. Therefore, the objective of this study is to run a quantitative bibliometric research through meta-analysis methodology and, consequently, to evaluate the articles used by qualitative methods in the area of sustainability in civil construction. For this, a search was carried out on the Web of Science. Thus, a set of keywords was used, followed by a filtering method, resulting in a review of 433 articles published in 18 years. VOSviewer software was used in the quantitative analysis of documents. The results demonstrated a lack of quantitative methodologies to assess sustainability in the civil construction industry. Thus, this research presents the evolution of studies, the main areas addressed, the main certifications and methodologies for environmental assessment, and the distribution of the on-site work stages in articles. This revealed the main contributions found in the literature, presenting the article’s focus, being as main areas explored material, project management, sustainability assessment, and energy; the most used methodology (LCA) and environmental certification (LEED). It was seen that the social and economic pillars are less frequently tackled when compared to the environmental one. It was also perceived that most of the papers focus on the planning and execution stages of the on-site work, being necessary to develop more studies on operation and maintenance stages. These results serve as a source of reference for future research.

Abstract:The incremental amount of needed Raw Materials (RM) and Critical Raw Materials (CRM) cannot be totally supplied by recycling activities, and mining activities are growing more and more at global level, requiring more modern and efficient technologies and mining techniques to guarantee a sustainable mining. To reach a sustainable mining, an interdisciplinary approach, which consists in considering economic, environmental and social impacts together with new processes implementation, is needed. The focus of the present research is the exploitation of extractive waste (EW) to recover RM and CRM, considering, the technological and economical factors, together with the environmental impacts, associated to EW quarrying and dressing activities.The present study, based on a case history from Northern Italy (Montorfano and Baveno granite quarrying area), was intended to validate the presented interdisciplinary approach for evaluating economic and environmental impacts associated to EW facility exploitation (from granite EW facility to products for ceramic industry and by products for building industry and infrastructures). Two different surveys were carried out: in 2009 and 2016, investigating four different EW facilities (Braghini, Ciana-Tane Pilastretto,Sengio, and Montorfano).A shared methodology was applied to determine EW characteristics (geochemical, petrographycal and mineralogical), EW facility volume (geophysical&#160; and topographic and morphologic 3D characterisation) and potential exploitable products, by-products (and CRM). Meanwhile, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was applied to determine environmental impacts associated to extraction and processing phases.The sampled materials from the EW facilities, sampled in 2009 and 2016, show highly homogeneous geochemical features (Al2O3: 13.02-14.65; Fe2O3: 1.40-2.41, TiO2: 0.10-0.26, CaO: 0.54-2.01, MgO: 0.14-0.45, K2O: 4.49-5.18, Na2O: 3.08-3.64) for major elements. The alkalies (K2O+Na2O) and Fe2O3tot content of all samples are extremely important for the feldspar (l.s.) industry, and &#160;the samples obtained after magnetic separation show a decrement of Fe2O3 passing from > 1.4% (not good for ceramic industry) to < 0.2% (good for ceramic industry). Moreover, a wider range of geochemical analysis was carried out in 2016 and an interesting fractionation in the treatment process is observed when considering the REE concentration: all samples of the magnetic fraction are much more concentrated than in the feeding material and can be up to one order of magnitude more concentrated than in the upgraded amagnetic portion. The total volume of dumps was estimated in about 2.1 Mm3.The LCA reports that main environmental loads were due to the dressing plant, including climate change and freshwater eutrophication ones. Despite landfilling shows minor impacts, it has significant impact in terrestrial eco-toxicity. While climate change indicators show significantly higher loads than savings, savings and loads in freshwater eutrophication indicator are balanced. The avoided phosphate and phosphorous release to water results in high ratio of savings in freshwater eutrophication.
