Abstract:Phytopathogens have negative impact on crop growth and production. Biological control of plant pathogens, is a safer alternative to chemical treatments, and may also provide additional advantages through plant-growth promotion activities. Recently, endophytes have received due attention to be used as biocontrol agents and plant growth promoters. The present study was designed to determine the antagonistic potential of endophytic fungi isolated from Dysoxylum gotadhora (Buch. Ham.) Mabb. against soil borne phytopathogens, Verticillium dahliae and Fusarium oxysporum, as well as to identify their plant growth promoting features. Dual culture method was used to assess the growth inhibition of phytopathogens in vitro. Results showed that Aspergillus sp. and Porostereum sp. reduced the growth of the phytopathogens with 40–70% inhibition and also produced high indole acetic acid (IAA) content with 19.237 ± 0.253 µg/mL and 18.60 ± 0.098 µg/mL, respectively. This signifies that fungal endophytes can be effectively used as biological control agents and growth promoters.
