Abstract:In the post-Cold War era,internal conflicts in Africa are increasingly becoming regionalized through their cross-border spread.In terms of the root cause of conflicts and actual influence,such regionalization takes a comprehensive form,viz.it includes several levels such as global,regional,sub-regional,national and sub-national,and several areas such as military,political,economic,environmental and social and forms a comprehensive security pattern consisting of multi-levels and multi-areas and their close interaction.Thus,it requires African regional and sub-regional organizations to play a central role in Africa's internal conflict resolution.

Abstract:This paper builds common grounds for a future research agenda in the regional studies of evolutionary economic geography and global production networks. I put forward two 'troubling themes' of (geo)politics and heightened risks as the most disruptive forces in today's increasingly fragmented global economy and argue for their significance in regional studies throughout the post-pandemic 2020s. Massive global change through the reconfiguration of and strategic (de/re)coupling with global production networks will engender new path formation in regional transformation. In this analytical move from the global 'back again' to the regional, there are common questions on epistemology (causal explanations) and substantive issues (network/regional resilience, institutions/the state, inequalities/uneven development and new forms of regional policies) for both communities of researchers.

Abstract:Regional design, long a backbone for spatial planning, even if under other names, has become topical again for two reasons – as a key strategy and as a key tool in spatial management. This is due to several reasons. New conditions of urbanization that result from the convergence of several factors highlight the need for spatial strategy formation and application at supra-metropolitan scales. These new conditions include globalization, climate change, booming urban population, increased mobility and interconnectivity, and new infrastructure technologies. These forces driving urbanization today and into the future play out at the urban scale, which is increasingly encompassed in the city-region. The solutions to the impacts and problems that these forces cause must be dealt with by a strategic urbanism at a scale that matches. This scale of urbanism can be denoted as regional design. To justify these claims and to understand the origins of regional design and its relevance today and into the future, the master strokes in its history are presented next. After that, we discuss current concepts and practices in regional design. In conclusion, we offer answers to the question: why a resurgence of regional design?

Abstract:The human landscape in the Central African region is complex. Within and across boundaries, human mobility creates and recreates political, social and cultural configurations which present challenges to states. In the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example, political instability raises the challenge of refugees. Beyond forced migration, the Central African region is also characterized by voluntary migration. This chapter aims to grasp the dynamics sustaining migration trends in this region so as to understand its drivers. It also analyses the actions and reactions of regional economic communities (RECs) as regional responses to tackle migration issues. The era of states managing migration on their own is apparently losing traction and is being replaced by a regional approach, which gives importance to RECs. The former is prone to control, to deter migration, whereas the latter perspective seeks free movement of people. The Central African region has many regional organizations, but only three are considered in this chapter: the Economic Community of the Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries (ECGLC) and the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (EMCCA). Voluntary migration in Central Africa is the most dynamic and should be governed in order to make this region ‘a space of peace and of development’.

Abstract:This article delves into the evolution of international norms, focusing on the dynamics within Central Asia as a microcosm of broader global shifts. It begins by elucidating the concept of a "region" in international relations, emphasizing its multifaceted nature, both geographically and culturally, as well as its evolving character in the face of global transformations. The study then delineates the emergence of regionalism, encompassing the historical context of old and new regionalism, with a nuanced understanding of their continuities and distinctions. A pivotal point of analysis is the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), whose genesis and transformation underscore the influence of new regional dynamics. The SCO's role as a tool for soft balancing against external hegemony, particularly that of the United States, is examined, highlighting its emphasis on shared norms that diverge from Western ideologies. The SCO's success in shaping normative preferences within Central Asia, particularly in promoting non-interference, state sovereignty, and stability, is contrasted with the efforts of Western institutions like the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which prioritize liberal democratic norms. The study concludes by elucidating the implications of these normative contestations in Central Asia for the broader international order.

Abstract:Abstract Considering stagnating regional prosperity levels and growing inter-regional disparities in many economies, this paper appeals for a renewed research agenda to deepen our understanding of regional economic development. This is done by discussing different conceptual perspectives, their empirical applications and open questions and suggestions for future research. Conventional approaches view development as an outcome of and dependent upon local economic structure. That is, high regional performance is associated with specific regional industrial and human capital mixes. We argue that to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms that drive regional economic development it is helpful to apply a relational approach that pays attention to the networks between economic actors across different spatial scales, from local to global. These generate knowledge as well as access to technologies, resources and markets, thereby catalyzing income growth. To support regional policy agendas, it is further necessary to go beyond identifying regularities that structure development and engage with differing regional pathways by conducting systematic comparative analyses of local contextual and institutional conditions.

Abstract:Progress in Human Geography, Ahead of Print. Regional economic resilience (RER) remains the state-of-the-art concept in economic geography to investigate regional development in times of disturbance. We seek to contribute to a transformative notion of RER, which unfolds in light of global environmental change. In our review of conceptual and empirical RER applications, we reveal three unresolved issues: a focus on firms rather than diverse actors, trivial reflections on social–ecological interdependencies, and the need for more fluid understandings of socio-spatial relations. Based on these insights from neighboring geographical disciplines, we provide concrete propositions for theoretical enhancement to make RER fit for purpose.

Abstract:Micro-region is a result of globalization, new regionalism and cross-border relations, which constructs a new regional connection level based on sub-national units and cross-border relations. The article aims to clarify the relationship among micro-region, sub-region and region by exploring how the region is made up in different levels, then we define mi-cro-regionalism as cross-border economic cooperation and security cooperation. We argue that, the existing study about mi-cro-regionalism, which emphasizes cross-border economic cooperation while ignores cross-border security cooperation will not contribute to addressing the security problems and risks stemming from the economic cooperation, further, it will lead to negative correlation between cross-border economic cooperation and cross-border security, which is so-called the cross-bor-der security-economic dilemma. To illustrate these hypotheses, we do a case study of the Growth Triangle in ASEAN and argue that regional autonomy and national security are the security inducements of the Growth Triangle, comprehensive se-curity and membership are the main security power, and open governance and free rider would be the main security obstacle in deepening the Growth Triangle.

Abstract:Since the global financial crisis, regional economic resilience has become a research hot-spot. The meaning of "resilience" in mechanics is the ability of an object to return to its initial state after being stressed. In subsequent studies, resilience is gradually transformed into a metaphor for research in the fields of ecology, economics and economic geography. Regional economic resilience has spatial scale characteristics, and its research object is the ability of multi-scale spatial economic systems responding to external shocks. Existing literature constructs the theoretical framework of regional economic resilience from the perspective of equilibrium theory and evolution theory. Regional resilience research integrates temporal and spatial characteristics. Existing research has also begun to excavate the micro-foundation of regional economic resilience from the perspective of network resilience in order to achieve macro-micro-scale unification. First,network resilience represents the ability of factors within a region to connect with each other, and important nodes play a global role in connection with each other. Second, the structure of the complex network itself has a significant impact on regional economic resilience. In terms of outlook, on the one hand, future research should pay more attention to the heterogeneity of crises and shocks, and systematically reveal the important role of actors in the formation and maintenance of regional economic resilience. Finally, in China, the multi-agent interaction process with the government as the main participant may systematically improve the resilience of the regional economy and enhance the stability of the Chinese economy in an uncertain environment.

Abstract:There are two common perspectives in studies of new regionalism among Chinese scholars of international relations.They are: using existing international relation theories to interpret the phenomenon of new regionalism,and using theories of new regionalism to promote regional unification.Till now no systematic theoretical frame has been established yet.In order to promote further studies of new regionalism,the author suggests that four tasks are to be undertaken.They are: resume China-oriented focus in the study and approach research topics from the Chinese perspective;establish a regionalist theoretical frame characteristics of East Asia in the light of macro strategies;further the research on regional unification,put forward the "Chinese proposal";strengthen studies on regional governance with the intention of discovering new models of governance and good governance in East Asia.

Abstract:This article is an attempt to contribute to the debate related to the effectiveness of regional organizations as forums of security cooperation. Realists argue that there is no substantive role for regional organizations in conflict prevention in a world characterised by anarchy and relentless competitions for power and security among states. On the other hand, the United Nations and other international bodies believe regional organisations can play significant role in conflict prevention by building trust among states through the provision of local forums for frequent interaction among states. The article discusses the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in three of its periods: 1) the period with no mandate on security; 2) the period of its renewed mandate for security cooperation and its limited success; and 3) the present period of impasse in implementing its mandate. Three main factors are discussed: 1) domestic politics of the member countries influencing the posture, policies and decisions of member states in relation to regional politics and the regional organization; 2) intra state conflicts of member states and absence of a common ground among them on the regional cooperation; and 3) the support of a favourable international political environment for such a regional security co-operation. The paper concludes that shared interests and problems among member states drive effective regional cooperation in conflict prevention. Regional mechanism in the absence of such a commonality is only limited to providing a platform for dialogue rather than effective security cooperation.

Abstract:Since 1990 there has been a renaissance of theoretical and empirical work on the spatial aspects of the economy--that is, where economic activity occurs and why. Using new tools--in particular, modeling techniques developed to analyze industrial organization, international trade, and economic growth--this "new economic geography" has emerged as one of the most exciting areas of contemporary economics. The authors show how seemingly disparate models reflect a few basic themes, and in so doing they develop a common "grammar" for discussing a variety of issues. They show how a common approach that emphasizes the three-way interaction among increasing returns, transportation costs, and the movement of productive factors can be applied to a wide range of issues in urban, regional, and international economics. This book is the first to provide a sound and unified explanation of the existence of large economic agglomerations at various spatial scales.
