Abstract:In the early post-war period, Japan has lifetime employment and stable home-ownership with male-based family ideology. The ideologies of the family and home-ownership began to change from the 1990s onwards. The burst of the bubble economy in 1992 destruct the lifetime unemployment and male based family ideology. Due to the deflation crisis, housing consumption dropped massively along with the decline in the marriage rate. Nevertheless, in some big cities like Tokyo, it is still difficult for young people to own a house even after the deflation crisis. Condominiums start to gained popularity compared with a single-family houses. Furthermore, new living styles such as parasite single and Freeters start to appear, which changed the life course in Japan. Moreover, the family are extended since many people choose to live with their parents even after marriage. So, the postwar ideologies of the family and home-ownership in Japan follow closely with the change in the Japanese economy and constantly adapt to the changes.
