Abstract:N-Methyl amines play a major role in the production of medicines, pesticides, surfactants and dyes. N-Methylation of primary or second amines with methanol is considered to be a green path for the synthesis of N-methyl amines and the catalyst is key. In this article, the combined Al2O3-mordenite catalyst (mass fraction of alumina is 40%) with good activity, selectivity, lifetime and stability was prepared for N-methylation of various amines with methanol in a hydrogen free system in a fixed bed reactor, and characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption and NH3-TPD. Furthermore, the methanol adsorption was investigated by in situ FTIR, and the result indicated that methoxyl species may be the active species for the N-methylation of amines.

Abstract:N-methylation of amines and imines with formic acid as C1 source by easily prepared Pt NPs as heterogeneous catalyst is reported here. Primary, secondary amines and imines were successfully methylated in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Both aromatic and aliphatic amines could be applied as substrates. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous Pt NPs were capable to be recylcled and reused for 7 times without significant decrease of reactivity. This protocol provided an indirect utilization pathway of CO2 by using formic acid as C1 source.

Abstract:ZIF-8 encapsulated Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for the hydrogenation of 3-methylcrotonaldehyde to prenol using the geometric effect. HR-TEM, HAADF-STEM, XRD, nitrogen adsorption isotherm characterization and size-selective reaction evaluation demonstrated that the Pt NPs were encapsulated in the inner space of ZIF-8. The Pt NPs in the Pt@ZIF-8 catalyst were surrounded by apertures with sizes commensurate with 3-methylcrotonaldehyde molecules. These narrow apertures forced the 3-methylcrotonaldehyde molecules to linearly approach the active sites. The C=C bond in the middle of the 3-methylcrotonaldehyde molecule was prevented from interacting with the Pt active sites by the narrow apertures around the Pt NPs, while the C=O bond at the tail-end was easily adsorbed and further hydrogenated to prenol. Using this geometric effect, the Pt@ZIF-8 catalyst exhibited a high selectivity to prenol (>84%) even at a high conversion (>90%).

Abstract:A highly selective N‐monomethylation of aniline and nitrobenzene using methanol as methylating reagent was achieved with high efficiency when using an encapsulated iridium nanocatalyst. A wide range of amines and nitro compounds reacted well in the established catalytic system with moderate to excellent product yields and good functional group tolerance. The transfer hydrogenation and successive cyclization coupling reaction of ortho‐phenylenediamine with methanol to afford benzimidazole and N‐methylbenzimidazole was also efficiently realized under moderate reaction conditions. Recycling experiments showed that the iridium nanocatalyst had a good stability without obvious activity loss.

Abstract:The co-aromatization of methane with higher hydrocarbons represents a promising route to valorize methane, an abundant but underexploited carbon resource. In this study, we elucidate a novel approach to enhance the catalytic co-aromatization of hexane and methane by confining Pt within zeolite catalysts and modulating its electron density. Our findings show that encapsulating Pt within MFI structure is pivotal for activating the feedstock and fostering the formation of aromatic products. Interaction between K atoms and the silanol nest forms siloxy groups which are critical for the stabilization of Pt species. Tuning the K content in PtSn@MFI catalysts adeptly alters the electronic configuration of Pt clusters. This modification is corroborated by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Remarkably, the catalyst with 0.8 wt% K exhibits an optimal Pt electron density, driving its superior efficacy in the co-aromatization reaction, converting 0.78 mol of methane for each mole of hexane processed. By employing 13 C isotopic labeling and solid-state NMR studies, we demonstrate the participation of methane in the adsorbed species inside the zeolite channel and its incorporation to the benzyl site of the substitute group and phenyl rings in aromatic compounds, underscoring the importance of Pt encapsulation.

Abstract:N-methylation of amines is of great interest in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and valuable compounds, and the possibility to perform this reaction with an inexpensive and non-toxic substrate like CO2 and its derivatives is quite appealing. Herein, the synthesis of four novel homoleptic Cu(II) complexes with hybrid NHC-phenolate (NHC = N-Heterocyclic Carbene) ligands is reported, and their use in the catalytic N-methylation of amines with CO2 in the presence of hydrosilanes is explored. Both bidentate or tetradentate ligands can be used in the preparation of the complexes provided that the structural requirements that two NHC and the two phenolate donors in the metal coordination sphere are mutually in trans is fulfilled. A new reaction protocol to perform the N-methylation of secondary aromatic amines and dibenzylamine in high yield under mild reaction conditions is developed, using the ionic liquid [BMMIM][NTf2] (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) as solvent and the catalyst precursor [Cu(L2)2]. Reactivity studies indicates that the reaction follows two different pathways with different hydrosilanes, and that the starting Cu(II) complexes are reduced under the catalytic conditions.

Ionic Liquid-Promoted Formylation of N(sp 2 )-Heteroarenes with CO 2 /H 2 over Pd/C

Abstract:A solvent plays an important role in chemical synthesis. Herein, we report ionic liquid (IL)-promoted formylation of N(sp2)-heteroarenes with CO2 and H2 to produce formamides over the Pd/C nanocatalyst. It was found that the combination of Pd/C with CO2-reactive IL, for example, tetrabutylphosphonium succinimide ([P4444][Suc]), achieved the hydrogenation of N(sp2)-heteroarenes and subsequent formylation with CO2/H2. A mechanism investigation indicated that [P4444][Suc] could simultaneously activate CO2 and N-heteroarenes via forming carbamate and hydrogen bonds, respectively; meanwhile, it could modify the catalytic activity of metal Pd via electron transfer, thus accomplishing the production of formamides from N(sp2)-heteroarenes and CO2/H2 in combination with Pd/C. This catalytic system was tolerant to a wide substrate scope, affording the corresponding formamides in moderate to high yields. The high efficacy enables the designed IL-Pd/C catalytic system of high practical potential.

Abstract:The formylation and methylation of amines with carbon dioxide and hydrosilanes are emerging yet important types of transformations for CO2. Catalytic methods effective for both reactions with wide substrate scopes are rare because of the difficulty in controlling the selectivity. Herein, we report that simple and readily available inorganic bases—alkali-metal carbonates, especially cesium carbonate—catalyze both the formylation and methylation reactions efficiently under mild conditions. The selectivity can be conveniently controlled by varying the reaction temperature and silane. A “cesium effect” on both reactions was observed by comparing the catalytic activity of various alkali-metal carbonates. Combined experimental and computational studies suggested the following reaction mechanism: (i) activation of Si–H by Cs2CO3, (ii) insertion of CO2 into Si–H, (iii) formylation of amines by silyl formate, and (iv) reduction of formamides to methylamines.
PtRu catalysts supported on heteropolyacid and chitosan functionalized carbon nanotubes for methanol oxidation reaction of fuel cells

Abstract:A simple self-assembly approach has been developed to functionalize carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with chitosan (CS) and heteropolyacids (HPAs) of phosphomolybdic acid (H(3)PMo(12)O(40), HPMo) and phosphotungstic acid (H(3)PW(12)O(40), HPW). The non-covalent functionalization method, which introduces homogenous surface functional groups with no detrimental effect on graphene structures of CNTs, can be carried out at room temperature without the use of corrosive acids. The PtRu nanoparticles supported on HPAs-CS-CNTs have a uniform distribution and much smaller size as compared to those of the PtRu nanoparticles supported on conventional acid treated CNTs (PtRu/AO-CNTs). The onset and peak potentials for CO(ad) oxidation on PtRu/HPAs-CS-CNTs catalysts are more negative than those on PtRu/AO-CNTs, indicating that HPAs facilitate the electro-oxidation of CO. The PtRu/HPMo-CS-CNTs catalyst has a higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation and higher tolerance toward CO poisoning than PtRu/HPW-CS-CNTs. The better electrocatalytic enhancement of HPMo on the PtRu/HPAs-CS-CNTs catalyst is most likely related to the fact that molybdenum-containing HPAs such as HPMo have more labile terminal oxygen to provide additional active oxygen sites while accelerating the CO and methanol oxidation in a similar way to that of Ru in the PtRu binary alloy system.

Abstract:N-methylated amines are essential bioactive compounds and have been widely used in the fine and bulk chemical industries, as well as in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes. Developing green, efficient, and low-cost catalysts for methylation of amines by using efficient and easily accessible methylating reagents is highly desired yet remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the selective N-dimethylation of different functional amines with different functional aldehydes under easy-to-handle and industrially applicable conditions using carbon-supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru/C) as a heterogeneous catalyst. A broad spectrum of amines could be efficiently converted to their corresponding N,N-dimethyl amines with good compatibility of various functional groups. This method is widely applicable to N-dimethylation of primary amines including aromatic, aliphatic amines with formaldehyde, and synthesis of tertiary amines from primary, secondary amines with different functional aldehydes. The advantage of this newly described method includes operational simplicity, high turnover number, the ready availability of the catalyst, and good functional group compatibility. This Ru/C catalyzed N-dimethylation reaction possibly proceeds through a two-step N-methylation reaction process.
Theoretical study of reductive CO2 functionalization with amines and phenylsilanes: What kind of solvents can be used as catalysts?

Abstract:In this study, the mechanisms of CO2 formylation and methylation with N-methylaniline and PhSiH3 were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the chemical selectivity of the reaction towards formamide or methylamine products was analyzed. The solvent N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) served as both solvent and catalyst. The obtained computational results indicated that both reactions are initiated by three successive CO2 reduction steps with hydrosilane to give a stable species, triformyloxysilane [Si](OCHO)3. Subsequently, formamides are generated upon the formylation of amines with the reduced CO2 at low temperatures. At high temperatures, methylation occurs via a key formaldehyde intermediate, leading to N, N-dimethylaniline. Based on the relationship between free energy barriers and the Hirshfeld charges of oxygen atoms in the solvents, the generic structures of solvents that can effectively promote the reduction of CO2 with phenylsilane are given. These solvents have a negatively charged oxygen atom with a Hirshfeld charge less than or equal to −0.28.

Abstract:We describe herein an efficient and catalyst-free methodology for N-formylation and N-methylation of various amines using BH3N(C2H5)(3) as a reductant and CO2 as C1 source. This system is compatible with a wide range of substrates, such as aromatic secondary amines, aliphatic secondary amines, heterocyclic amines, and primary amines. The desired methylamines and formamides are obtained in excellent yields by changing the reaction solvent, temperature, and the amount of BH3N(C2H5)(3). The optimum yields of methylamines and formamides are up to 99 %, which are comparable to the data using different catalysts. Moreover, it has been demonstrated by mechanistic research that CO2 was activated by inserting into B-H bonds of BH3N(C2H5)(3) and formamide can be regarded as an intermediate species during the N-methylation formation.

Abstract:Formamides represent an abundant class of compounds in organic synthesis. They can be made efficiently by the direct catalytic coupling of methanol with amines in the presence of metal-based catalysts. However, these catalysts require complicated organic ligands, susceptible to oxidative self-degradation, restricting their practical applications. Here, we describe an inorganic ligand-supported chromium (III) catalyst, (NH 4 ) 3 [CrMo 6 O 18 (OH) 6 ], which consists of a central chromium (III) single-atomic core supported by a cycle-shaped inorganic ligand consisting of six Mo VI O 6 octahedra, shows excellent activity and selectivity. Various primary amines and secondary amines are successfully transformed into the corresponding formamides under mild conditions, and the formylation of primary diamines is also achieved. The chromium catalyst can be reused several times with little loss of the activity. Mechanistic insight is provided based on the observation of an intermediate and control experiments.

Abstract:Using feedstock methanol as a green methylation reagent, the selective N-monomethylation of anilines is realized under mild reaction conditions by using N-heterocyclic carbene iridium (NHC-Ir) coordination assemblies as highly efficient solid molecular catalysts. Along with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance, up to quantitative yield and 2.0 × 104 turnover numbers (TONs) are obtained even at low catalyst loadings. Notably, the solid NHC-Ir molecular catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled more than 20 times without obvious loss of reactivity and selectivity. Furthermore, this selective practical protocol can be successfully extended to direct methylation of highly functionalized bioactive compounds including 3-aminoestrone, cinacalcet, and their analogues in excellent yields and selectivities, highlighting their potential application in pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:An iridium complex Cp*, which is synthesized by the coordinative immobilization of [Cp*IrCl2]2 on a functionalized covalent triazine framework (CTF), was found to be a general and highly efficient catalyst for the N-methylation of amines with methanol in the presence of carbonate. Under environmentally benign conditions, a variety of desirable products were obtained in high yields with complete selectivities and functional group friendliness. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst could be recycled by simple filtration without obvious loss of catalytic activity after sixth cycle. Notably, this research exhibited the potential of covalent triazine framework-supported transition metal catalysts for hydrogen autotransfer process.

Abstract:Base-switched methylenation and formylation using tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as a carbon source have been achieved under mild conditions, catalyzed by CuCl2, with atmospheric oxygen as oxidant. Bisindolylmethanes, diphenylmethanes and 3-formylindoles were synthesized with excellent regioselectivity and good yield.

Abstract:The development of efficient, cost-effective and heterogeneous catalysts for the valorization of CO2 to high-value chemicals is of vital importance in reducing CO2 emissions. Herein, single-atom Zn on bipyridine-based porous organic polymer was successfully fabricated through a facile copolymerization of divinyl-bipyridine and divinyl-benzene monomers, followed by complexation with Zn(OAc)2. The prepared materials with different concentrations of bipyridine moieties possessed large surface areas, hierarchical porosity, and strong coordination interaction between Zn(OAc)2 and the polymer scaffold. Catalytic evaluation demonstrated that the optimal single-atom Zn catalyst displayed extremely high catalytic performance towards the N-formylation of amines with CO2 and PhSiH3. Notably, under mild reaction conditions (30 °C, 1 bar CO2), a Zn loading as low as 0.5 mol‰ was sufficient for 94% yield of N-methylformanilide, with a record-high turnover frequency (TOF) of 376 h−1 compared to previously reported heterogeneous catalysts. Moreover, the solid catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for five cycles. Additionally, various amines could be efficiently transformed into corresponding formamide with moderate to high yields. The present work highlights a facile and cost-effective method for constructing highly efficient and recyclable single-atom metal catalysts for N-formylation of amines with CO2.
