Abstract:Youngsters of today can scarcely avoid contact with the Arthurian legend as they proceed through childhood, encountering it in comic books, films, computer games, and occasionally—one would hope—even in books. The characters and motifs embodied in the tradition have become as familiar as superheroes, and most children, although their knowledge might be shallow, can associate Excalibur with King Arthur as readily as the Batmobile with Batman. Acquaintance with the legend is one of the pop-cultural legacies of the twentieth century for English speakers everywhere as well as for many others who have been exposed to the products of Anglo-American culture.
