Abstract:Incorporating three-dimensional (3D) spatial measurement into the urban expansion measurement system plays an important role in understanding the degree of urban expansion and regulating and governing it. This article proposes an urban concrete forest and constructs an Urban Volume Sprawl Index to quantitatively study the spatiotemporal characteristics of the three-dimensional expansion of Chinese prefecture-level cities. Furthermore, geographic detectors are used to study its influencing factors. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) Between 1990 and 2018, the volume of Chinese cities has increased from 414.67 to 1,406.29 km3, with a growth rate of 239.13%. (2) The overall growth rate of urban volume shows a gradual slowing trend during the research period, from 55.99% to 40.83%. (3) Between 1990 and 2018, the Urban Volume Sprawl Index nationwide gradually slowed down (from 5.18% to 3.90%), with the largest rate reported in the western region (4.1%), the middle in the eastern region (3.46%), and the smallest in the central region (3.28%). (4) Government and economic factors have the greatest impact on the three-dimensional expansion of Chinese cities (over 69%), with social factors in the middle, and natural factors having the weakest explanatory power (less than 15%). (5) There are differences in the degree of urban expansion between two-dimensional and three-dimensional perspectives. A total of 38.1% of cities have a greater degree of urban expansion from a two-dimensional (2D) analysis perspective, which are mainly small cities located in the western and eastern regions. A total of 5.4% of cities (mainly located in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions) have a greater degree of urban expansion from a 3D perspective. The remaining cities (56.5%) go through the same level of urban expansion in both analysis dimensions. A 3D urban expansion analysis can better explain and reveal the actual production and living space provided by urban expansion than 2D analysis. It can provide temporal data for urban land efficiency evaluation, ghost city identification, etc., and it has good application and promotion prospects.

Abstract:Urban densification is widely regarded as a key strategy for curbing urban sprawl and optimizing resource efficiency. However, it still threatens urban greenspaces by altering the original land use. The imperative to preserve and restore urban greenspaces has gained increased attention, aligning with the global spotlight on urban resilience. This prompts the crucial question: How will urban densification impact urban greening? Focusing on the old city areas of 159 cities with over one million population in China, we depicted the dynamics of urban greenness using remote sensing data and explored greening trends under urban densification on both horizontal and vertical scales by generalized additive model (GAM). The findings are as follows: (1) As urban horizontal density increased from 68.4 % to 93.1 %, a significant U-shaped trend in urban greenness emerged within the old city areas over the past three decades. Notably, 80 % of these cities experienced turning points before 2010. (2) Almost half of the cities have recovered the urban greenness to 30 years ago, with a growth of 6.58 % on average. While urban densification led to a loss of greenness (-0.0197+0.0182), urban greenspaces countered this with a gain of 0.0049+0.0075, and the original built-up area contributed a gain of 0.0027 +0.0284. (3) We decomposed urban densification into horizontal and vertical growth. The horizontal growth coincides with the greenness loss initially, but the rebound occurs when the horizontal density approaches 83 %. Vertical growth, on the other hand, is negatively correlated with urban greenness. Our study depicts the turning point of urban greening in old city areas unveiling the ecological effect of urban densification, which provides a reference for the sustainable development of future urbanization.

Abstract:The substantial rise in carbon emissions caused by extensive global urbanization over the past four decades has been one of the key drivers of climate warming. To determine low-carbon and sustainable urban planning strategies, a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the multidimensional characteristics of urban expansion and carbon emissions is crucial. Shortcomings, such as limitations on perspectives, methodologies, and spatial scales, remain in current global research. In this study, we proposed an innovative and comprehensive explanatory framework for urban expansion, coupled with patterns and functions, for the first time. Furthermore, this study utilized 338 prefecture-level cities in mainland China, along with multi-source geographic big data, machine-learning models, and Geodetector models, to empirically analyze the spatial heterogeneity and driving mechanisms of carbon emissions in urban expansion areas from 2010 to 2019. China was found to have experienced drastic and spatially unbalanced urban expansion dominated by edge and outlying expansion, with patches of infilling expansion. Regional disparities and differences in urban expansion planning created significant spatial heterogeneity in carbon emissions. Moreover, gross domestic product density had the largest positive effect on carbon emissions in urban expansion areas, while that of vegetation cover, population density, and road density were high during outlying expansion. Significant spatial heterogeneity was observed in the magnitude and direction of the influence of each urban functional indicator on carbon emissions during edge expansion. The impacts of public service facilities and residential densities on carbon emissions were enhanced by infilling expansion. Overall, this study systematically illustrates the theoretical and planning significance of urban expansion path selection for carbon emissions reduction at different developmental stages, supporting the formulation of sustainable urbanization schemes.

Abstract:Studies of urbanization effects in Chinese cities from the aspect of the coupled development of economy and environment are rare due to data limitations. This paper studied Shanghai's fast urban expansion and examined the dynamic relationship between economic growth and environment consequences at the district level. We extracted data on urban built-up area and land surface temperature from remote sensing images. We analyzed the patterns of urban expansion and land use change and explained the dynamic relationship between economic development and environment conditions. We attributed the uneven economic development and environmental change in districts of Shanghai to four main institutional factors: (1) the role of the government, (2) the multi-level urban planning system, (3) land market reform, and (4) the economic restructuring.

Abstract:Accurately capturing the urbanization process is essential for planning sustainable cities and realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11. However, until recently, most of the studies on urban expansion in the world have focused on area growth but have little knowledge of height dynamics. This study mapped the spatial distribution of urban built-up areas (UBA) in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), one of the most urbanized regions in China, to investigate the spatio-temporal evolution in both the horizontal and vertical directions from 1990 to 2020. We coupled and analyzed the horizontal and vertical urban expansion from the 3-D perspective and identified the dominant types. The results showed that 30 cities (73.17 % of the total number of cities) were increasing in the 3-D combined expansion intensity. The decreasing cities were mainly located in Anhui Province. Despite the increasing number of skyscrapers, horizontal growth has dominated urban expansion over the past three decades. The UBA area of the YRD has grown from 4,855.30 km2 to 44,447.15 km2, while the average building height has slowly decreased by 1.26 m. Significant unevenness and differences existed in horizontal and vertical expansions of varying provinces and cities. Our study can accurately grasp the 3-D urban expansion process in the YRD and could promote the efficient development and sustainable utilization of urban land resources in China and beyond.

Abstract:Urbanization has accelerated in China, resulting in a noticeable conflict between urban expansion and land use/land cover (LULC). This issue can exacerbate ecological and developmental problems in urban neighborhoods, so it is crucial to explore the relationship between long-term urban expansion and LULC spatial and temporal transitions. We first defined urban built-up areas in terms of human economic activity and then used spatial measures to examine urban expansion and spatio-temporal changes in 25 LULC classes by analyzing 369 cities across China. Our findings indicate that China's urban built-up areas expanded 9.1 times between 1995 and 2020, with the fastest growth rate occurring between 1995 and 2005 at about 16%. We observed a negative association between China's urban built-up area and dry farming land, forests, and grassland in that order, with grassland exhibiting the weakest correlation. The negative correlation between urban built-up areas and paddy fields became positive after 2010, while the positive correlation with reservoirs and canals became negative after 2015. This study utilized spatial measures to demonstrate the spatial heterogeneity of urban expansion in China and explored the extent to which different LULC area changes explained urban expansion. We provide a reference for decision-making efforts on land management and sustainable use in urban areas.

Contemporary Urban Expansion in China and its diverse effects

Abstract:The scale of urbanization in China during the past 30 years is unprecedented in human history along with its fast economic growth, presenting profound impacts on socioeconomics, human well-being, and the environment. We quantified spatial patterns and temporal courses of urban land expansion for 32 major cities across China from the late 1970s to 2010 using multitemporal Landsat data of 1978, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010, and further explored the effects of urbanization on climate (i.e., urban heat islands), and vegetation phenology and growth in these 32 cities, together with MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) products.We found that rapid urban expansion was observed in these 32 major cities from 1978 to 2010, with an overall annual expansion rate of 6.8 ± 2.5 %. Chinese urban expansion does not fit urban expansion theory consistently over time and has transitioned from contradicting to conforming to Gibrat’s law, which states that the growth rate is independent of city size. The surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) differed substantially between day and night and varied greatly with season. Spatial variability of the SUHII is ultimately controlled by background climate. The growing season started 11.9 days earlier and ended 5.4 days later in urban zones compared to rural counterparts. The phenological sensitivity to temperature were 9-11 days SOS advance and 6-10 days EOS delay per 1 °C increase of LST. For the first time, we developed a general conceptual framework for quantifying the impacts of urbanization on vegetation growth and applied it in 32 Chinese cities. Results indicated prevalent vegetation growth enhancement in urban environment and vegetation growth was enhanced at 85% of the places along the intensity gradient. This growth enhancement offset about 40% of direct loss of vegetation productivity caused by replacing productive vegetated surfaces with non-productive impervious surfaces. The urban environments, considered as the "harbingers" of global environmental change and "natural laboratories" for global change studies, shed new insights and approaches into global change science, and the urban-rural gradient provides an excellent experimental manipulations for global change studies.
Urban Vertical Profiles of Three Most Urbanized Chinese Cities and the Spatial Coupling with Horizontal Urban Expansion

Abstract:Earth has entered the century of city. Horizontal urban expansion has long been studied and is relatively well understood, but the knowledge of the vertical profiles of built structures remains limited. Here we propose a spatially explicit ensemble model and map the wall-to-wall building height of the three most urbanized Chinese cities in 2017 based on open-access Sentinel-1 SAR data, biophysical indices derived from Sentinel-2 multi spectral imageries, and nighttime light (NTL) intensity. We further conduct a chronosequence analysis of the building height for these cities along with their horizontal urban expansion between 1985 and 2017. We show that our proposed method performs well in generating 1 km x 1 km building height maps in Beijing (R-2 = 0.87, RMSE = 3.53 m), Shanghai (R-2 = 0.82, RMSE = 4.21 m), and Shenzhen (R-2 = 0.78, RMSE = 6.92 m). Shenzhen has the tallest (mean building height (MBH) = 37.63 m) and most diverse (coefficient of variation (CV) = 63.84%) vertical landscapes, followed by Shanghai (MBH = 29.86 m, CV= 51.14%). And the vertical profile is the lowest (MBH = 19.21 m) and relatively homogeneous (CV = 44.93%) in Beijing. We also find that vertical urban profiles are coupled with horizontal urban expansion, evidenced by an increase in building height along with the decreasing proximity to urban centers and the increasing urbanization intensity, and a clear imprint of urbanization age in all three cities. The specific characteristics vary among cities due primarily to local urbanization strategies. The knowledge of the vertical profiles of the three most urbanized Chinese cities complements the horizontal insights into urbanization and can assist sustainable land use and urban planning.

For example, there are conttradiction between generality and particularity of the underground space resources and contradiction betwteen protection and damage to the environment in the Three-dimensional development. Then the article proposes some pertinent countermeasures and hopes to make reference on the Three-dimensional devellopment in China.

Abstract:Urbanization in China has expanded at an unprecedented speed since the declaration of “Reform and Open Policy” and presented many challenges. Unbalanced regional development, appearance of super megacities and concomitant problems, and conflicts between urbanization and cultivated land protection are three critical problems that Chinese urbanization has to face. To develop new plans for foreseeable future urbanization in China, it is critical to understand the evolving history of cities across China. This study maps urban expansion of 60 typical Chinese cities based on large amount of remote sensing data and the labor-intensive image interpretation method, in order to understand the history of urban expansion from the 1970s to 2013. Results showed that area of cities expanded 5.23 times compared to their area in the 1970s. Urban expansion in China accelerated three times (1988–1996, 1999–2006, and 2009–2011) and decelerated three times (1997–1998, 2007–2008, and 2012–2013) over the 40 years. The urban area of South China expanded most significantly 9.42 times, while the urban area in Northeast China expanded only 2.37 times. The disparity among different administrative ranks of cities was even greater than (3.81 times) the differences among different regions. Super megacities have been continuously expanding at a fast rate (8.60-fold), and have not shown obvious signs of slowing down. The proportion of cultivated land among the land sources for urban expansion decreased to a small extent in the 1990s, but cultivated land continues to be the major land source for urban expansion. Effective future urbanization needs controlling the expansion scale of large cities and reasonably developing medium and small cities, as well as balancing regional development.

Addressing Global Climate Change With Big Data-Driven Urban Planning Policy

Abstract:Cities in China gather data to support strategic and operational management, including databases on buildings, land use, human occupancy, underground services, and travel surveys. However, these data are seldom used to analyze policy decisions, with urban planning confined largely to operational planning. Real estate and financial interests dominate strategic planning, while an ecological crisis threatens urban sustainability in the long run. In this research, carbon emissions (CE) related to planning, building and intra-urban travel are measured for two representative types of typical urban development in southern China, using data from Shenzhen. The two types are contemporary planned units (PUD) and dense, low-rise developments (VSD). It is found that VSD acounts for less than one-third the CE of PUD, although there is considerable diversity in the performance of PUD. Based on this research, major reductions in CE can be achieved by focussing urban planning policy on carbon-efficient development.

Abstract:China has seen a transition from impulsive industrial development-driven urban expansion to urban planning and government control since the start of the 21st century. Urban planning attempts to ensure the sustainable development of cities and the rational use of land resources. The dual-track urbanization process does, however, often result in a significant gap between planning and actual development. This paper contends that a comprehensive dual-track urbanization research perspective is better suited for investigating urban sprawl in peri-urban areas in post-reform market economy-active regions. Taking Xiaoshan District, the peri-urban area of Hangzhou, China, as a case study, this research utilizes land use raster data from 1985, 2000, 2010, and 2020 to identify the dynamic changes in urban construction land and examines the driving elements through the logistic regression model. Based on the results, the mechanisms of market-incented and government-controlled impacts on urban expansion are explained. This study aims to (1) analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of Xiaoshan’s urban expansion during 1985–2020; (2) compare the compositional characteristics of three types of urban growth (edge growth, infilling, and leapfrog development) in each phase of Xiaoshan; (3) identify the natural environment, accessibility factors, and socioeconomic aspects that promote Xiaoshan’s urban expansion in 2000–2020; (4) discuss Xiaoshan’s dual-track urbanization from four perspectives: regional development, private business, government control, and major events. This study advanced our knowledge of the driving mechanisms of urban land expansion in small towns, from peri-urban areas to metropolitan sub-centers, and, thus, has important implications for Chinese urban planning and the management of metropolitan suburbs, especially those located in the Yangtze River Delta.
Spatial and Temporal Dimensions of Urban Expansion in China

Abstract:The scale of urbanization in China during the past three decades is unprecedented in human history, and the processes are poorly understood. Here we present an effort to map the urban land expansion processes of 32 major cities in China from 1978 to 2010 using Landsat satellite data to understand the temporal and spatial characteristics. Results showed that the urban extent of the 32 cities expanded exponentially with very high annual rates varying from 3.2% to 12.8%. Temporal fluctuation in urban expansion rates in these 32 cities was obvious, with unexpected and alarming expansion rates from 2005 to 2010 that drastically exceeded their expectation, which was calculated from the long-term trend between 1978 and 2005, by 45%. Overall, we found that the growth rates of cities during the entire study period were inversely related to city size, contradicting the theory or Gibrat's law, which states that the growth rate is independent of city size. More detailed analysis indicated that city growth in China has transitioned from contradicting to conforming to Gibrat's law since 1995. Our study suggests that the urban expansion theory (i.e., Gibrat's law) does not fit Chinese expansion consistently over time, and the exact causes are unknown. Exploring the causes in future research will improve our understanding of the theory and, more importantly, understand the feasibility of the theoretical relationship between city size and expansion rate in guiding contemporary urban expansion planning.

Abstract:The 21st century is marked by urbanization, with global focus on horizontal city expansion. Yet, vertical growth lacks research due to data scarcity. This study investigates the fusion of urban building height predictions with conventional sprawl projections to offer a holistic 3D urban expansion foresight. We constructed a model for projecting urban building volume using socio-economic factors includes GDP, population, and urbanization indicators, enabling the anticipation of China's 2010–2100 building volume demand across five Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). Furthermore, deep learning-based neural networks were harnessed for estimating land conversion probabilities and building heights. By aggregating the projected demand, we estimated spatial expansion and building heights for each scenario at ten-year intervals from 2010 to 2100. Compared to other products, our proposed method excels in spatial granularity and temporal continuity, which includes height properties in the 3D structure. According to the projections of this study, considering various SSPs, China's building volume is expected to reach approximately 4500 km 3 to 6500 km 3 by 2050, representing 1.3–1.9 times increase compared to 2010. Furthermore, forecasts for 2050–2100 anticipate a notable decline to 60 % of the 2050 demand. At a more local level, potential spatial imbalances may arise, as the projections indicate significant urban expansion in the eastern areas and a heightened density of urban land within existing city clusters. This approach surpasses the constraints of 2D analysis, pioneering the prediction of fine-resolution, long-term spatiotemporal urban expansion in China (2010–2100), contributing a model and data support for future sustainable urban development pursuits.

Abstract:Since China's economic reform in the late 1970s, Shanghai, the country's largest and most modem city, has experienced rapid expansion and urbanization. Here, we explore its land-use and land-cover changes, focusing on the impacts of the urbanization process on air and water quality, local climate, and biodiversity. Over the past 30 years, Shanghai's urban area and green land (eg urban parks, street trees, lawns) have increased dramatically, at the expense of cropland. Concentrations of major air pollutants (eg SO2, NOx, and total suspended particles) were higher in urban areas than in suburban and rural areas. Overall, however, concentrations have decreased (with the exception of NOx), due primarily to a decline in coal consumption by industry and in private households. Increased NOx pollution was mainly attributed to the huge increase in the number of vehicles on the roads. Water quality changes showed a pattern similar to that of air quality, with the most severe pollution occurring in urban areas. Differences in mean air temperatures between urban and rural areas also increased, in line with the rapid pace of urban expansion, indicating an accelerating "urban heat island" effect. Urban expansion also led to a decrease in native plant species. Despite its severe environmental problems, Shanghai has also seen major economic development. Managing the tradeoffs between urbanization and environmental protection will be a major challenge for Chinese policy makers.

Abstract:Urban tree cover plays a pivotal role in bolstering the sustainability, livability, and resilience of cities. However, the changes in urban tree cover and exposure under the backdrop of urbanization in China remain unclear. This study investigates the spatial distribution and temporal trends of urban tree cover expansion and exposure change from 1985 to 2023. Our findings highlight significant progress in enhancing urban tree cover, with the average tree cover in Chinese urban areas reaching 11.9% in 2023, representing a remarkable 116% increase from 5.5% in 1985. However, this positive trend contrasts with persistent deficiencies in forest resources, as reflected by the fact that urban forest cover in Chinese cities was only 4.1% in 2023, compared with 0.1% in 1985. Furthermore, our study revealed substantial heterogeneity in the spatiotemporal variations of urban tree cover. Only five cities exhibited a decreasing trend in tree cover during the study period, with coastal cities demonstrating significantly higher tree cover compared with inland cities. Additionally, we observed that urban tree cover and expansion rates decreased significantly with increasing latitude. Moreover, nationwide, there has been a sustained and accelerated improvement in urban tree exposure levels, with average tree exposure increasing from 0.66% in 1985 to 7.45% in 2020. The 69% of cities experienced positive changes in tree exposure levels, while only 1% exhibited negative changes. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders to foster greener, more resilient, and sustainable urban environments in China.

Abstract:Escalating urban issues in Beijing call for comprehensive exploration of urban construction land expansion towards the goal of carbon neutrality. Firstly, urban construction land in Beijing during the period 2005–2020 was accurately detected using Landsat images and impervious surface data, and then its expansion characteristics were revealed. Finally, the driving mechanism of urban construction land expansion was explored using geographically and temporally weighted regression from the input–output perspective. The results showed that the expansion speed and intensity of urban construction land in Beijing showed an overall tendency to slow down, and the center of urban expansion shifted to the new urban development zone and ecological function conservation zone. Urban construction land expansion in the central urban area was first scattered and then compact, while that in the new urban development zone and ecological function conservation zone primarily followed an outward pattern. The permanent population, per capita GDP, and per capita retail sales of social consumer goods were the primary driving factors of urban construction land expansion in Beijing, the impacts of which varied significantly among different districts of Beijing. All these results can provide a solid foundation for improving land use policies towards the goal of carbon neutrality in highly urbanized areas.

Abstract:Following economic growth in the past three decades, rapid urbanization has caused many pronounced issues, such as spatial scarcity and cultural discontinuity, in Chinese historical and cultural cities. In order to better deal with the diversification of underground space resources, data and information, this study introduces a random forest algorithm and proposes a multi-layer information superposition method. According to the characteristics of different information, starting from qualitative and quantitative aspects, we explore the effective performance of the rational development of underground space resources. Taking Yangzhou City, China, as an example, this paper evaluates the suitability and calculates the development volume of urban underground space. The development capacity, potential value, and comprehensive quality of underground space resources are explored in an attempt to demonstrate the practicality and scientificity of the evaluation method for achieving the developmental goals of urban space reconstruction and historic preservation. On this basis, an underground space scale forecast is carried out to provide decision support for relevant planners, managers, and construction personnel that is conducive to the orderly development of urban space, alleviation of increasing human–land conflicts, and coordination of the protection and development of underground space resources in historical and cultural cities, ultimately promoting sustainable development of cities.

Abstract:Urban forest plays a crucial role in coping with global change and rapid urbanization via providing various ecosystem services. In this context, cities in Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China (GBA) established increasing investment in urban forest construction since 2000. However, data on the current condition of the planted forests remains scarce, which hampers a comprehensive understanding of how to improve the quality of urban forest planning and construction in the future. Therefore, we selected a core city Guangzhou, an inland city Foshan and a coastal city Zhuhai in GBA as our research objects and classified them into core urban area (CUA), semi urban area (SUA), and urban fringe area (UFA). We launched a field measurement for the tree variables regarding forest structure. Besides, ecological indexes were introduced to evaluate the condition and potential of the forests and florescence data together with tridimensional green quantity data provided different perspectives on landscape diversity and stability. The results show that Guangzhou has a well-planned forest pattern with advantages in forest structures and visible landscape values in different areas. To introduce different tree species in CUA and SUA and to plant more trees of those rare tree species in UFA can effectively increase Guangzhou's forest diversity and evenness. For Foshan, it is advisable to implement a balanced forest-investment policy by making specific recommendations for different areas, such as planting various tree species in CUA and UFA to increase forest diversity. For Zhuhai, it is distinguished for the attractiveness for tourists by the advantages in landscape diversity and stability, but it is still necessary to plant different trees with appropriate classes to enhance the urban forest stability. Overall, it is crucial for city managers to obtain precise knowledge of urban forest conditions from both the ecological and landscape perspectives, which may contribute enormously to the improvement of the quality of urban forest planning and construction in adapting to various environmental challenges.
