Abstract:Evidences are accumulating to stress the importance of the gut‐brain axis in mood disorders. In the laboratory, we are interested in myocardial infarction and depression that occurs in more than 65% of patients following a heart attack. We have demonstrated that cells in certain brain areas die mainly during the first days following the ischemic episode which result in the apparition of clinical signs of depression. In order to reduce these effects, we have tested different interventions, including taking probiotics before and after a myocardial infarction to determine their effects in post‐myocardial depression. Our results show that probiotics can reduce this death, resulting in a significant decrease in depressive behaviours. Although the beneficial mechanisms of probiotics to reduce post‐infarction depression symptoms are hypothetical for now, we will explore different ways to explain these effects. Among these ways, we will focus on a better integrity of the intestinal barrier and the stimulation of the vagus nerve.
