Abstract:This article responds to calls among anthropologists to attend to the aspirational qualities of life pursuits by respecting idealized life visions and acknowledging the suggestiveness of living otherwise. It follows a cohort of formerly urban middle‐class Chinese families that have chosen to 'opt out' of their successful city lives to pursue alternative lifestyles and education for their children in China's rural southwest. Drawing on literatures about voluntary lifestyle migrations and alternative parenting and education, I show how these families construct meaningful social worlds through class histories, family ideals, and presentist temporalities that deviate from Western class formation and neoliberal constructions of self defined by individualistic identity pursuits. Through analysing a configuration of self and sociality that emphasizes the family and routes parental self‐aspirations through children, the article deepens our understanding of child‐centredness as a key feature of Chinese lifestyle migrations. It shows how quests for 'the good life' take shape through diverse sociohistorical and familial contexts with their own temporal orientations and life politics. Abstrait Choisir de quitter la ville : migration pour changer de vie, éducation alternative et poursuite du bonheur par les familles de classe moyenne chinoises Résumé Le présent article répond à l'exhortation faite aux anthropologues de s'intéresser aux aspirations qui sous‐tendent les projets de vie en respectant leurs visions idéalisées et en reconnaissant le pouvoir suggestif d'une autre façon de vivre. L'autrice suit une cohorte de familles chinoises de classe moyenne urbaine qui ont choisi de tourner le dos à une vie réussie en ville pour adopter un mode de vie et une éducation différents pour leurs enfants dans le sud‐ouest rural de la Chine. À partir de publications sur les migrations volontaires pour changer de vie et sur la parentalité et l'éducation alternatives, elle montre comment ces familles construisent des mondes sociaux qui ont un sens grâce à des histoires de classe, à des idéaux familiaux et à des temporalités présentistes qui divergent de la formation des classes à l'occidentale et des constructions néolibérales de soi, définies par une recherche d'identité individualiste. En analysant une configuration de soi et de la vie sociale qui met l'accent sur la famille et axe les aspirations personnelles des parents sur les enfants, l'article approfondit notre compréhension de la place centrale de l'enfant comme caractéristique cruciale des migrations pour changer de vie en Chine. Il montre comment la quête de « la bonne vie » prend forme au travers de différents contextes sociohistoriques et familiaux, possédant leurs propres orientations temporelles et leurs politiques de vie propres.
