Abstract:INSTRUCTORS' NOTES Case Overview and Recommendations for Teaching Approaches Students will find the case very interesting as most of them will have used one of Apple's products. Students will combine the facts presented in the case with their own perceptions and experiences with Apple's products to answer the discussion questions. The case makes valuable contributions related to the historical background of one of the most successful companies in the world and consistently voted the most innovative company. Furthermore, the case examines the psychology of an entrepreneur, Steve Jobs, and takes the student through the entrepreneurial process of starting Apple along with Steve Wozniak. A unique aspect of this case is that Apple products are so ubiquitous that most students will have experienced the technological innovativeness of the company through personal ownership of an iPod, iPhone, or Apple computer product (MAC or laptop). This aspect should make the case both relevant and interesting to students. The following questions are recommended for discussion. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS WITH SUGGESTED ANSWERS 1. Discuss the attributes that contribute to the success of Steve Jobs. Students should draw from facts presented in the case highlighting various attributes that could be argued to be related to his success. Evidence of this may include the following: Passion-- Job's introduction to the world of electronics came during High School with the discovery of electronic hobby kits. He realized that the electric world was not as complicated as it first seemed and that electronics was an interesting field. It quickly became his passion. He began attending lectures conducted by the Hewlett Packard Company (HP) and audited classes at Reed College. This further fueled his appetite for the field and eventually he found summer employment at HP. Jobs (and Wozniak) attended meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club. The club consisted of other electronics enthusiasts who presented news of new innovations in the electronics world and discussed updates of the progressions made by members in creating their own computers. Intelligence and Confidence-- Early on, he found school to be so easy that he was able to skip 5th grade and move directly into Middle School. Later, while working at his job at Atari, some of his fellow workers viewed him as arrogant and overly confident. Although, this was not necessarily an attribute conducive to a collegial work environment, it did provide Jobs the opportunity to work the night shift where it was easier for him to befriend Steve Wozniak who assisted Jobs with the technical aspects of his work. Others described Jobs as "referring to most people as bozos". Although this was a condescending way of viewing his future customers, it did serve to ensure that Apple products were developed in a user-friendly and understandable manner. Resourcefulness-- Atari invited Jobs to develop the circuitry that would transform the popular game, Pong into something more innovative (Breakout), however he was given only four days to complete the task. Realizing that this project was beyond his capabilities, he contacted his friend, Steve Wozniak who helped him accomplish the task. This event, turned out to be the motivation for starting the Apple Computer Company. Visionary and Opportunistic-- Jobs recognized an opportunity to pitch a working model (developed by Wozniak) of a computer that could be viewed on a TV (as opposed to a costly monitor) to HP and Atari. Although neither company chose to invest in the production and marketing, Jobs persuaded Wozniak that this creation was good enough that they should try to produce and market the computer on their own. They raised $1,750 to begin this venture, which turned out to be the start of the Apple Computer Company (Young and Simon, 2005). Abstract:We are incredibly lucky! When I look back in time, I see no time more exciting than now! When I look forward in time, I see no time more exciting than now! For now, we are privileged to witness the dawn of the era of personal information processing. Few people have ever lived at such a time of technological change. Perhaps only those who were present when the first book was printed have, before us, had a similar opportunity to observe the birth of a technology-derived tool having the power of the personal computer to improve our quality of life. We are presently witnessing what is probably the most significant of all technology-based revolutions surpassing in importance the printing press, the automobile and the assembly line. Low-cost abundant computing brings us to the dawn of a new era. A new era in which information processing power will no longer be the exclusive tool of government and large business. Abstract:Purpose – This paper observes that Apple illustrates the right and wrong ways to bring about organizational change, and emphasizes the key role of personalities in the process. Design/methodology/approach – Compares and contrasts the performance of Apple under the leadership of Steve Jobs and John Sculley. Findings – Advances the view that Steve Jobs was more successful because he focused on innovation, while John Sculley paid more attention to current products and profitability. Practical implications – Describes how the Steve Jobs era saw the introduction of such iconic Apple products as the iPod, iPhone and iPad, which helped the company to gain pre-eminence in its field. Social implications – Argues that, in today’s globalized business environment, organizational change is a must. Demonstrates how to achieve this successfully. Originality/value – Describes two sides of the Apple story and draws the lessons for other businesses involved in organizational change.

Abstract:Steve Jobs is frequently invoked as an example of a ‘visionary’ leader in business. But what is it about his ‘vision’ that was so distinctive? In his famous speech at Stanford University in 2005, he gave a clue – the calligraphy lessons he took at Reed College in 1972. Seemingly devoid of any practical utility at the time, the accumulated skills and enhanced aesthetic sensitivity acquired from exposure to calligraphy were put into use a decade later when creating the first Macintosh computer. Its elegant design would give rise to a full-blown commitment to aesthetics that became the hallmark of Apple. Calligraphy is not merely a way of writing, but a philosophical process articulated through the careful configuration of brush strokes, which combines poetry, literature and painting. That this complex art form would imprint itself on one of the most celebrated narratives of business success is a testament to more than the role of chance in life. It embodies the propensity to reconsider the role of aesthetics in business, and the recognition that, to paraphrase Albert Einstein, the greatest managers are also artists.

Abstract:The subject of the paper is the linguistic aspects of personal self-identification in the literary biography. This work aims to outline the linguistic aspects of personal identity research. The topicality of the research is to clarify the theoretical grounds by which the linguistic aspects of personal identity actualization in the text of the literary biography can be revealed. The general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, generalization), the contextual and interpretive method, and discourse analysis are used in the paper. The novelty of the paper is determined both by the object of the study and the angle of the analysis currently presented by means of the theoretical grounds. As a result of the research, it has been established that the matter of studying the identity of Steve Jobs is correlated with a number of philosophical concepts (self-knowledge, self-realization, self-identification, self-evaluation), the main means of implementation of which at the verbal level is the linguistic strategy of self-presentation. The starting level in the typology of Steve Jobs’ linguistic personality is pragmatic. Its main units are motive, linguistic strategy and tactics. The description of Steve Jobs’ self-identification, which is directly related to the realization of the motives of self-knowledge, image creation, and creative self-expression, is important for W. Isaacson, Steve Jobs’ bibliographer. The realization of the self-knowledge motive is based on auto-communication; this motive is not related to communicative strategies and is actualized through such forms of self-knowledge as memories, self-observation, self-analysis, and self-evaluation. The motive of image creation is realized through the linguistic strategy of self-presentation. The creation of Steve Jobs’ image is embodied through a number of tactics (self-praise, appealing to authorities, exculpatory self-defense, criticism, positioning himself as an example to follow, etc.). The motive of creative self-expression has a mixed character, since its implementation involves both an external (model) addressee and auto-addressability. In future works, investigating the peculiarities of the self-identification process of linguistic realization and Steve Jobs’ self-presentation in the literary biography “Steve Jobs: Biography” might prove important.

Abstract:This article addresses design theory's lack of engagement with psychoanalysis by examining how the Lacanian concept of the subject-supposed-to-know can be used to explore the area of desirability in design and bring to light certain regularities in the structures of design discourse. After a brief introduction, the subject-supposed-to-know and the transference relation are situated in the context of Lacan's work and explored with reference to Plato's Symposium . The figure of Steve Jobs is then introduced as a representative example of the subject-supposed-to-know; that is, as a figure who mediates the relation between subject and object through various discursive strategies. The nature of the belief necessary to this relation is then interrogated via a reading of The Devil Wears Prada . The final section addresses the ideological function of Steve Jobs in the terms of the discourse of management.

Abstract:This paper draws insights from the leadership approaches of two legendary San Francisco Bay Area leadersSteve Jobs and Jerry Garciawho each transformed their very different industries and left an extraordinary legacy when they passed away. The paper explores the remarkably similar backgrounds of Jobs and Garcia as well as their leadership styles. Jobs and Garcia excelled at using both art and science as leadership tools. Further, it is proposed that Aesthetic Leadership can be expanded with four elements from Shared Leadership theory: shared purpose, social support, voice, and transparency. Finally, it is proposed that effective Aesthetic Leaders blend art and commerce not only in their leadership style but also in the products and services their followers create.

Abstract:This article argues that a leader’s narrative and storytelling skills play a critical role in constructing their charismatic identity. In line with Goffman’s (1959) observations, we argue that these skills are effected through ‘stage management’: a segregation between back and front ‘performing regions’ that serves to minimise potential incursions, leaks, disruptions and faux pas that may undermine the leader’s performance. Further, we suggest that Burke’s (1966) observations in relation to the importance of scene setting offer important insights into the impact of leader storytelling and narrative on followers. We revise and extend Gardner and Avolio’s (1998) dramaturgical model of the charismatic relationship in order to reflect these observations, and go on to apply this model to an analysis of three public performances by a case-study leader — Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. We examine Jobs’ performances as discursive texts, exploring the ways in which he uses them, through stage management, to practice narrative and storytelling and explore how, through these discursive activities, he is able to define himself and his world for his followers. In doing so, we empirically demonstrate and extend the utility of the dramaturgical metaphor to the study of charismatic leadership.
