Abstract:Femicide is a global phenomenon; yet there is no commonly accepted understanding of what counts as femicide. Different disciplines and approaches offer different definitions. Defining the term femicide is not only a purely lexical matter but also involves the aspect of data collection. Owing to the lack of a standardized definition, data collected by countries under this label are not comparable and cannot be used for global or regional estimates to provide an indication of the scale of this phenomenon. One tool to fight this silent war against women is certainly medical-legal diagnosis, with everything that the body of a victim of femicide can reveal. Autopsies are crucial; they can help differentiate between female homicide and femicide and the search for a formal, agreed-upon definition of femicide may be derived precisely from forensic pathology research and necropsy evidence. The autopsies performed and studies written on femicide cases are of extraordinary importance because they make it easy to identify which anatomical districts are most affected, which weapons are most frequently used, and where the bodies of victims of femicide are most often found. To curb this phenomenon, it is essential to act on several levels, starting with the national one. It is necessary to develop a data collection and processing system involving both law enforcement and forensic centers. It is also emphasized the relevance of creating a universal database that can be easily consulted, along the lines of the one that already exists in the United States.

Abstract:(1) Background: Femicide is an increasing phenomenon consisting of the murder of a woman for gender-related reasons. Despite the enactment of new laws aimed at controlling the phenomenon by toughening the penalties and introducing aggravating circumstances, there is an increasing trend that testifies to the persistence of a flaw in the actual measures. (2) Case Presentation. We report the case of the murder of a 32-year-old woman—perpetrated by an ex-husband who refused to accept the end of the marriage—the analysis of which allowed us to frame the case as femicide. (3) Discussion. Despite global awareness of this phenomenon, the identification of risk factors to predict and prevent femicide is of utmost importance. This can be achieved by a multidisciplinary approach involving police officers, legal professionals, hospitals, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and medico-legal departments aimed at promoting standardized methodologies. (4) Conclusions. We evaluate the contribution of forensic investigations to the identification of key elements that can help frame the murder of a woman as a femicide. Considering the devastating consequences for children who witness this kind of violence within the domestic setting, the planning of more impactful preventive actions is, thus, mandatory to minimize effects on public health.

Intimate partner femicide (IPF): Medico-legal investigation at the Institutes of Legal Medicine of Freiburg (Germany) and Padova (Italy)

Abstract:Violence against women is a significant public health concern, with femicide as its most extreme manifestation. This crime is often perpetrated by current or former intimate partners, thus taking the name of intimate partner femicide (IPF). Although international comparisons are essential for prevention policies, cross-country comparative studies are scarce in this context. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare clinical, epidemiological and medico-legal characteristics of IPF autopsy cases investigated at the Institutes of Legal Medicine of two Western European cities, in order to identify a potential medico-legal pattern of IPF. Autopsy and police reports of IPF cases occurred in the judicial district of Freiburg (Germany) and Padova (Italy) from 2000 to 2022 were analyzed. Data relating to victims, perpetrators, relationship context, and circumstantial and pathological-forensic characteristics of the homicide were collected. Statistical analyses were performed to explore potential relationships between the data collected. Additionally, a review of the literature dealing with autopsy-based studies on IPF was performed. Overall, 82 cases of IPF were analyzed, 39 from Freiburg and 43 from Padova. A total of 6 papers fulfilled the review inclusion criteria. Our study identified a medico-legal pattern of IPF and demonstrated that it did not vary substantially between the two European Countries considered, suggesting that certain IPF characteristics are shared at the European level. However, a significant finding emerged regarding the higher prevalence of firearm-related IPFs in Italy compared to Germany. Forensic pathology research might contribute to developing targeted prevention policies to protect women from this lethal form of violence.

Abstract:Femicides are topics frequently covered by the media, and journalists use different frames when reporting on such lethal acts of violence against women. This chapter addresses the media coverage and framing in German online press articles of two femicides with victims of Romanian ethnicity. The research presented used as methodology thematic content analysis, along with media framing analysis. In the chapter, the results of this study are discussed, that is, the characteristics of media coverage and content related to the killings of the two Romanian women in the German press are analysed, the main frames used by the media in their reporting on the femicides are pointed out, and the extent to which journalists use in their narratives techniques of blaming the victims is examined. Moreover, the chapter investigates whether the media report the crimes against women as singular facts or address them in the broader context of social problems, and contribute, in this way, to the increase of public awareness and social responsibility towards them.

Abstract:Introduction: Femicide represents the dramatic end-point on a spectrum of violence against women and is an increasingly prevalent medico-legal issue. Whilst there is no definition of femicide in the Irish legal system, femicide can be understood as the gender based killing of women or girls.1 The pervasiveness of gender-based violence against women is a growing cause for concern with 2018 estimates by the World Health Organisation (WHO) revealing that 1 in 3 women have experienced Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).2 Femicide remains poorly defined and underreported worldwide due to enduring stigmatisation, shame and a lack of official statistics addressing national femicide rates. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore Irish cases of femicide, quantify the prevalence of femicide in Ireland and identify any emerging trends over a 12-year-period. Methods: All homicides referred to the Office of the State Pathologist (OSP) from 2012 to 2023 were reviewed and a total of 97 cases of femicide were ?identified and included in this study. Results: Femicide rates increased from 1 in 5 (19 %) homicides referred to the OSP in 2012-2020 to 3 in 10 from 2021 to 2023 (29 %). Domestic femicides accounted for 74 % of cases, with 41 % of women murdered in the home they shared with their killer. 56 % of women were killed by a current or former intimate partner and 20 % by a family member. Sharp force injuries were present in 75 % of femicides associated with a history of sexual violence. These cases had the highest average number of injuries per case (n = 30) and a significantly lower average age than that of the entire cohort (19 years versus 41 years). Conclusion: The true scale of gender-based violence against women remains largely hidden due to a lack of focused official statistics and a clear definition of femicide. As populations become more diverse, and displacement secondary to environmental, or humanitarian crises becomes more common, it is essential that official data is collected in order to understand and ultimately prevent gender-based violence in this vulnerable cohort.

Abstract:New data on murders of women—released on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women to commence the United Nations' annual 16 Days of Activism campaign1—paint a devastating picture of continued violence towards women around the world. The #16daysofactivism is a time to shine light on painful truths that should motivate more action from us as health professionals.Globally, 85 000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023, the new report finds.2 Of these murders, 60% were committed by an intimate partner or a family member. Abstract:The World Health Organization identifies among the top ten causes of death, illness and disability for adult women on male aggression driving, while other international bodies regularly draw attention to this issue. So far little has been done by binding, until the approval of the Convention in Istanbul in 2011 (ratified in Italy in 2012, with the Law 119/2013). In particular the welfare systems do not implement measures and strategies where this priority receives integrated responses both social and health care. Furthermore, the complex nature of the problem and the extension in quantitative terms the phenomenon involves the difficulty of developing predictive tools that help to combat this problem by acting proactively. Abstract:Femicide, the most extreme expression of gender-based violence, is perpetrated primarily by intimate partners, and it also victimizes women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This study aimed to analyze the scientific literature on intimate partner femicide among pregnant and postpartum women to determine the magnitude of this event, its risk factors, and the main information sources consulted to produce this data. A systematic search of six databases (PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and PsycINFO) produced 885 articles published between 2000 and 2020. After careful analysis, ten articles that met the requirements of this study were selected. The results suggest that intimate partner femicide during pregnancy and the postpartum period was responsible for a significant number of homicides during that period. Firearm injuries are the most common cause of injury, affecting primarily Black, single, young women who utilize health services. Combinations of different information systems were used as a data source to identify femicides. The implementation of intersectoral prevention and protection policies is fundamental and contributes to breaking the invisibility and naturalization of violence committed by an intimate partner. It is also necessary to discuss the information qualification to classify this crime and the impact of violence on the maternal mortality rate.

Women victims of violent partners: the Italian situation amid culture and psychopathology

Abstract:In 2006, the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) conducted a survey over the entire national territory of women victims of sexual, physical, and psychologic violence, a few years after the first survey, conducted in 2002. For the 2002 survey, respondents were 60,000 women, 22,759 of whom were aged 14–59 years. For the 2006 survey, the sample consisted of 25,000 women aged 16–70 years. Owing to the sensitivity of the issues, the telephone survey technique seems best suited because it provides more anonymity and guarantee of protection. The survey showed that the phenomenon of violence against women is most commonly perpetrated by the partner or ex-partner, even in cases of homicide. A comparison of the Italian data with those of the U.S.A. for the period 2001–2006 showed a specificity of Intimate Partner Violence in Italy, that seems to be related to cultural elements and psychologic and psychopathologic factors.

Abstract:Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been declared a global epidemic by the World Health Organization. Although the attention paid to both the perpetrators and victims of gender-based violence has increased, scientific research is still lacking in regard to the representations of operators involved in interventions and management. Therefore, the following study explores how the representations of operators affect how gender violence can be managed and combatted through an ecological approach to this phenomenon, in addition to highlighting the roles of organizational-level services and their cultural and symbolic substrates. In total, 35 health and social professionals were interviewed and textual materials were analyzed by thematic analysis. The evidence suggests that services contrasting gender-based violence utilize different representations and management approaches. The authors hope that these differences can become a resource, rather than a limitation, when combatting gender-based violence through the construction of more integrated networks and a greater dialogue among different services, in order to make interventions designed to combat gender-based violence more effective.

Abstract:Online violence against women and girls, known as cyber-VAWG, is a phenomenon that exacerbates dynamics of discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion of women from society. This is recognized as a form of violence with profound social, cultural, and economic consequences (EIGE, 2017; EU Parliament, 2021; Goulds et al., 2020). Rather than being an isolated phenomenon, cyber-violence is part of the continuum of violence, emphasizing how its various manifestations stem from a common cultural root and are inherently connected to each other. This study, by analyzing various Italian awareness campaigns focused on cyber-violence against women and girls, highlights the essentiality of a media-educational approach that integrates a gender perspective into the creation of media literacy pathways specifically aimed at digital environments. This integration proves fundamental in promoting media-educational strategies that do not just focus on developing skills but also consider the social and cultural context in which digital practices take shape (Cho, 2022; Taddeo & Tirocchi, 2014; Tirocchi, 2013).

Abstract:The paper presents and discusses data from the research «STEP – Stereotype and Prejudice. For a Cultural Change in Gender Representation in the Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Media Reporting». The research is coordinated by Professor Flaminia Saccà, and financed by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Department for Equal Opportunities. The analysis conducted on a sample of 283 judgments relating to crimes of violence against women (domestic violence; sexual violence; murder / femicide; human trafficking; stalking) shows how stereotypes and prejudices regarding gender relations, role expectations and women representation are still strongly rooted in our society and, at least partially, in our courtrooms. The paper identifies and describes the main critical elements found in the representation of violence against women proposed by the judgments’ language: the representation of the victim (and the key role of her testimony); the presence of three recurrent biases (family dispute bias, jealousy bias and raptus bias); the almost total lack of references to the main international regulatory sources (CEDAW and the Istanbul Convention).

Abstract:The article describes the process of establishing mechanism for preventing, punishing and eliminating violence against women in the European region and outlines the main components of such mechanism. The main non-binding Council of Europe instruments on violence elimination against women, namely the Declaration on Policies for Combating Violence against Women in a Democratic Europe (adopted at the 3rd European Ministerial Conference on Equality between Women and Men (Rome, 21-22 October 1993) and Council of Europe Committee of Ministers Recommendation Rec(2002)5 to member states on the protection of women against violence are analyzed. The key developments of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence are characterized. It has been found that in the Convention, the phenomenon of "woman" and "femininity" is disclosed through the category of gender, but not through purely sexual biological traits. Both the concept of gender based violence and cross-border approach to violence against women have been considered. The main obligations of States with regard to the protection of certain categories of women who may be victims of violence due to their particular status, such as migrant women and refugees, are also discussed in the article. The main aspects of substantive law norms of the Convention have been analyzed. The monitoring mechanism of the Istanbul Convention, which consists of Committee of the Parties and the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, has been described. It has been found that the case law of the European Court of Human Rights plays an important role in developing effective mechanism for combating violence against women. The high-profile case of the ECHR concerning the issue of violence against women (Opuz v. Turkey, 2009) has been discussed. A brief overview of the legal framework on violence against women in Ukraine has been provided. Key directions for the improvement of the Ukrainian national mechanism for combating violence against women have been suggested.
Femicides in Turkey: Analysis of the last two decades’ cases

Abstract:Abstract Aim Femicide is the women's murder by men for misogynistic reasons. This research aims to determine the characteristics of femicides in Turkey. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 13 news sites were scanned using keywords related to femicides between 2000-2019, and 1744 cases were included. In the study, the murdered women, the perpetrators’, and the femicides’ characteristics were determined and the percentages, central tendency, and distribution measures were calculated. Results The mean age of the murdered women was 33.2 (SD = ±13.2); 55.5% who were married or cohabitated had at least one child (Mean=2.2±1.4), and 977 children lost their mothers due to femicide. Of the women killed, 19.1% of them filed for divorce, 10.0% of them applied to law enforcement before, and 4.5% were pregnant. Of the perpetrators, 53.1% were husbands/ex-husbands. The mean age of perpetrators was 38.3±13.4 and 10.8% had criminal records. Of the perpetrators, 12.1% had threatened the women before, and 6.2% of them had been detained. Of the femicides, 80.4% were committed in urban areas. According to the news, 34.7% of the perpetrators were in the prosecution and detention process, 25.6% were on trial, 16.2% committed suicide. Of those whose sentences have been finalized, 26.6% of them were given aggravated life imprisonment and 36.3% of them to life imprisonment. Sudden quarrels, desire for divorce, jealousy, and honor/custom were the most cited reasons. Firearms or sharps were the most frequently used weapons. Conclusions Women were killed by men who were close to them. Women's desires for separation/divorce or to make their own decisions for their lives posed a threat to traditional masculinity. The fact that one out of every ten perpetrators had a criminal record in femicides showed that violence was a way of life for some men. In addition, the ease of access to firearms led to their frequent use in femicides. Key messages • Improve gender equality. • Access to firearms should prevented.

Abstract:The gender disparity in intimate killings underscores the need for close attention to the phenomenon of intimate partner–perpetrated femicides and theories useful in understanding this pervasive and enduring problem. The most overarching paradigm used is that of the feminist perspective. The purpose of this article is to review the tenets of feminist theory as the most viable and efficacious framework for understanding and explaining intimate partner–perpetrated femicide, to highlight empirical evidence supporting the strength and value of this perspective, to address the contentions of those in opposition to this perspective, and to provide research and policy implications targeted at greater understanding, and, ultimately, lower rates of femicide.

Abstract:Memory Studies, Ahead of Print. Over the past three decades, transnational feminist activist movements in Latin America have been struggling to construct collective subject positions from where to remember, bear witness to, and rally against feminicide. This article explores literature's contribution to this broader process of feminist collective subjectivity formation. It does so by means of a reading of two recent yet already emblematic feminicide narratives in literature: Selva Almada's Dead Girls and Cristina Rivera Garza's Liliana's Invincible Summer. The article starts by making a case for the importance of attending to the rhetorical dimensions of contemporary literary engagements with feminicide to better understand how they mobilize memory with a view to enabling political change. Subsequently, the analysis shows how, in the process of commemorating gender violence, Almada and Rivera Garza tactically interpellate readers into communities of feminicide remembrance with the aim of bolstering ongoing feminist struggles against gender violence.

Abstract:This paper evaluates the effectiveness of femicide laws in combating gender-based killings of women, a major cause of premature female mortality globally. Focusing on Mexico, a pioneer in adopting such legislation, the paper leverages variations in the enactment of femicide laws and associated prison sentences across states. Using the difference-in-difference estimator, the analysis reveals that these laws have not significantly affected the incidence of femicides, homicides of women, or reports of women who have disappeared. These findings remain robust even when accounting for differences in prison sentencing, whether states also implemented unilateral divorce laws, or decriminalized abortion alongside femicide legislation. The results suggest that legislative measures are insufficient to address violence against women in settings where impunity prevails.

Abstract:The growing availability of technologies, virtual content and the widespread diffusion of social media has led to the emergence of a problem - that of cyberviolence - now of global reach and with significant social consequences. In this changed criminological framework, the phenomenon of male violence against women is reinforced. However, the criminal law of recent decades has slowly evolved, providing ever greater protection for women who are victims of violence. Recognition within the Italian criminal system of the so-called cybercrime runs parallel to this adjustment process. The connections between cyberspace and forms of violence against women are evident, capable of harming an even more intimate sphere, that of sexuality and its confidentiality. This intertwining led to the coining of terms such as cyberstalking and cyber harassment in common language and the Italian criminal context. However, the jurisprudential reflection on the risk underlying the emerging phenomena called sexting, sextortion and revenge porn, appears limited. Criminal law, as conceived and created to operate in a static reality, inevitably finds its limitation in providing the victim with protection synchronized for the speed of the digital world. Criminal law thus finds itself reflecting on its adaptability to liquid modernity and necessarily having to dialogue with the new branch of computer law, where the new rights to be forgotten, to the confidentiality and protection of one's data, find space and greater protection. Finally, there is an urgent need to combine protection tools that release from procedural delays and can stop the circulation of harmful content with timescales closer to the flow of current time, to counter the plague of violence against women. Abstract:Context Against the backdrop of a high prevalence rate of femicide across Africa, it is crucial to gain methodological insights into the existing research on femicide. Objective To develop evidence-based strategies to address the complex and multifaceted nature of femicide in Africa, ultimately contributing to its prevention and reduction. Data sources Empirical research was searched for using four electronic research databases (ProQuest, Web of Science, EBSCO and PubMed). Eligibility criteria Full-text empirical articles (ie, observational or retrospective studies) published in English between the period of 1 January 1992 and 30 July 2021, which sampled femicide victims and/or perpetrators in Africa, were included in the review. Data extraction Data were extracted using predefined data fields, including study quality indicators. Data synthesis Thomas and Harden's (2008) thematic synthesis method was used to analyse 22 empirical articles that met the inclusion criteria in this study. Results This review highlights the significant focus on femicide research in South Africa. Most studies of femicides have used cross-sectional research designs. This review also demonstrates that crime dockets have benefited significantly from forensic contributions and police investigations. Furthermore, research efforts have uncovered various contextual factors that contribute to femicide, such as the high prevalence of early childhood trauma and the loss of primary caregivers among femicide offenders. Conclusion This systematic review offers a thorough synthesis of the current understanding of femicide in an African context, focusing on South Africa. Despite acknowledging the strengths and limitations of the existing knowledge, this review emphasises the urgency of addressing femicide and calls for international attention and action to effectively combat this pressing issue.
