Abstract:Traditional microwave absorbers can hide target objects from the detection of radar waves without tackling optical waves. However, in actual scenarios, the objects might still be observed by a hyperspectral remote sensor or an imaging system from comparison with environmental optical features, in particular for variable backgrounds. For this aspect, a comprehensive stealthing technique able to deal with microwaves and optical features simultaneously adapting to the variable environment is highly desired. In this work, an ultrathin flexible metamaterial that can simultaneously realize wideband microwave absorption and controllable visible and near-infrared luminescence spectra is proposed. The designed artificial coat can absorb more than 80% of the incident energy in the X-band (8-12 GHz) within a large incidence angle range up to 54° at low polarization sensitivity, while its real-time visible and near-infrared luminescence spectrum can be electrically adjusted through an integrated emission system. The method proposed here can be extended to broader wave bands and find important applications in multifunctional stealthing technologies.

Abstract:Microwave metamaterials are electromagnetic devices structured on the subwavelength scale that have enabled extraordinary ways to control microwave fields. These versatile elements pave the way for next-generation biosensors in future healthcare systems that can overcome key technological limitations encountered by existing radio-frequency components when they are interfaced with the human body. In this chapter, we discuss the developments in microwave metamaterials for biomedical sensing. We highlight their working principles and applications in both current and emerging biomedical technologies including transmission-line biosensors, wireless biosensors, microwave imagers, body sensor networks, and their wireless powering approaches.
A High Sensitivity Microwave Sensor Based on Metamaterial Absorbers

Abstract:The meta?material absorbers have characteristics of low profile and strong resonance,and can ap-ply to high?sensitivity sensing.This paper designs a microwave metamaterial absorber sensor with the aim of detecting the refractive index of dielectric plates.Through the simulation design and the optimization, the paper obtains a high?absorption absorber structure and analyzes the absorption performance and mecha-nism.The refractive index and thickness of the dielectric plate may result in the resonant frequency and ab-sorption amplitude of the absorber.When thickness is larger than 2mm,the resonant frequency is subject to approximate influence from the refractive index,and the influence of thickness is negligible.Through simulation and parameter fitting,linear function between the resonant frequency and refractive index is ob-tained.The major advantages of the metamaterial absorber sensor are high in sensitivity,high in FoM val-ue and good in linearity.The frequency sensitivity and FoM value achieve 1 592 MHz/RIU and 7.026 9/RIU,respectively.The absorber sensor also has potential application values in thickness and incident angle sensing.

Abstract:We have designed, fabricated, and characterized metamaterial enhanced bimaterial cantilever pixels for far-infrared detection. Local heating due to absorption from split ring resonators (SRRs) incorporated directly onto the cantilever pixels leads to mechanical deflection which is readily detected with visible light. Highly responsive pixels have been fabricated for detection at 95 GHz and 693 GHz, demonstrating the frequency agility of our technique. We have obtained single pixel responsivities as high as 16,500 V/W and noise equivalent powers of 10(-8) W/Hz(1/2) with these first-generation devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly introduce three kinds of microwave chemical sensors based on metamaterials. These microfluidic chemical sensors are composed of resonators based on metamaterials and microfluidic channels which are put on the location with the strongest electric field. The performances of these sensors have been validated through full-wave simulations and measurements. The results show that these sensors have the advantages of small size, high sensitivity, small amount of sample and compatibility with lab-on-a-chip platforms.

Abstract:A high-temperature sensor based on a metamaterial unit cell is proposed in this paper. The wireless passive temperature sensing method is based on the electromagnetic backscatter principle, and thus has the advantages of higher quality, lower environmental interference, and anti-low frequency interference. We developed a finite-element method-based model for the sensor via high-frequency simulation software (HFSS). A double split-ring resonator (SRR) with an outer ring length of 13 mm was designed on alumina ceramic substrate. The sensor was fabricated at 2.42 GHz using micromechanical technology and screen printing technology. When the temperature increased from 28 to 1100 °C, the resonant frequency decreased from 2.417 to 2.320 GHz with an average sensitivity of 95.63 kHz/°C. As the sensor is easily designed and fabricated, it can be used for chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags by simply changing the size of rings. Furthermore, emerging 3D printing technology and commercial desktop inkjet printers will be used to realize the rapid low-cost preparation of the sensor, enabling its wide range of applications in aerospace, military, manufacturing, transportation, and other fields.

Abstract:In the early 1940s, electromagnetic (EM) waves in the RF and microwave frequency range were used to transmit messages between New York and Philadelphia [1]. Telecom operators and broadcasters immediately adopted this method because it made data transmission quite easy. Today, recent advances in satellite, cellular, and fiber-optic communication have significantly increased the data delivery rate. In the telecommunications industry, large numbers of RF and microwave technologies integrated with digital transmission have now been adopted. Meanwhile, RF and microwave technologies have also been extensively utilized for non-telecommunications applications, including the imaging and sensing of objects and structures of arbitrary shapes and dimensions. The process of using RF technology for imaging and sensing applications arises from the fact that microwaves can penetrate objects to provide valuable information.

Metamaterial microwave sensor with ultrahigh Q-factor based on narrow-band absorption

Abstract:A novel metamaterial sensor with ultrahigh Q-factor of 665.85 and 1883.3 at 5.46 GHz and 11.3 GHz is presented in this paper, which consists of a metal pattern with cross structure and ring (CSR), a dielectric slab FR4 and a metal backplate. Based on the principle of the absorber, the Q-factor of the two resonance frequency points is improved by optimizing the ring and cross structure to strengthen the resonance. It is because of its wide angle incidence, insensitive polarization, and narrow-band absorptivity greater than 90 %, which is very conducive to the design of material refractive index sensor. Equivalent circuit method is used to analyze the characteristic of the metamaterial structure and the experimental results are in good agreement with the simulations. By loading three giving materials, the sensing function is analyzed and verified in experiments. The design has the advantages of ultrahigh Q-factor, angle and polarization insensitivity, and has potential application prospects in metamaterial sensing.

Abstract:The superior performance of metamaterial-inspired sensors has enabled their application in various material characterization tasks, such as dielectric constant measurement, concentration determination, composition quantification, and impurity or defect detection. This article provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in metamaterial-inspired sensors, with a specific focus on their design aspects. The applications, working principles, and classifications of these sensors are systematically introduced. A novel classification system for metamaterial-based sensors is proposed to categorize them based on their measurement systems, which are planar transmission lines, cavity waveguides, and free-space measurements. Each metamaterial-loaded measurement system is analysed, considering excitation techniques for resonators and the loading configuration of samples under test. Design strategies, including resonator and sensor topology optimization, appropriate material selection, advanced fabrication and data processing techniques, and simplified operations, are reviewed. Lastly, current challenges, encompassing instrumental, sample-related, and application challenges, are addressed. It is envisioned that the design strategies are useful in the development of microwave sensors with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and robustness.

Abstract:The microwave properties of composites containing Fe-based ferromagnetic microwires and carbon fibres have been investigated as part of a campaign to bring added functionalities into structural composites. A transmission window observed in 1-6 GHz demonstrates double-negative (DNG), i.e., metamaterial characteristics in the composites containing short-cut carbon fibres and a parallel array of microwires; the metamaterial characteristic is due to the ferromagnetic resonance and a plasmonic behaviour, as short carbon fibres are proved to ameliorate DNG properties through enhancing the impedance of the composites. In parallel, magnetically tunable metamaterial features are realised in composites containing continuous carbon fibres and microwires, which can be switched on/off via rotating the electrical excitation direction. Such structural composites integrated with metamaterial features (termed as metacomposites) are potentially useful for active cloaking applications among others.

Abstract:Metamaterial-based devices show properties like negative magnetic permeability and negative electrical permittivity, which are not found naturally. Due to their extraordinary sensitivity to nearby perturbations, metamaterial structures have recently emerged as highly desirable and effective techniques of detection. Wide dynamic range, multi-functionality, and simple design and production are a few benefits of metamaterial-based structures. The sensitivity and limit of detection for sensors based on metamaterials can be enhanced by properly altering the device parameters. With the inclusion of microfluidics in metamaterial-based sensors, the sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limit can also be improved. In this review, we have focused on the various meta-surfaces employed for sensing purposes. We have provided a brief introduction to the principle and working of sensors based on meta-surfaces. The main content of the paper is a detailed review of metamaterial-inspired microwave sensor device applications in different fields. These fields include applications in biological sensing, chemical and fuel sensing, physical sensing (includes temperature, strain, displacement, and thickness measurement), and non-destructive techniques for structural health monitoring.

Abstract:Sensor utilizing metamaterials have opened up a new ﬁeld of considerable interest. We extend here the works of our group about metamaterial sensor based on Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM), which is constructed with a microring resonator sensor coated with metamaterial layer. We demonstrate that our sensor possesses higher sensitivity than the traditional sensor since the amplification and penetration of evanescent wave by metamaterials.

Abstract:Based on the field enhancement principle of trapped modes, two new asymmetric metamaterial resonators are presented. Transmission response (S-21) of the rectangular wave-guide filled with an asymmetric metamaterial resonator is simulated. Results show that the asymmetric resonator possesses high Q-factor and improved sensitivity. The microwave sensor based on the asymmetric resonator can be flexibly tailored to design requirement by varying the asymmetry parameter or the topological structure of the resonator. The asymmetric metamaterial resonator-assisted microwave sensor will have potential applications in biosensor and chemosensor fields for sensing minute amounts of dielectric sample substance

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a scheme to enhance and tune absorption properties of conventional microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) by metamaterials. By covering a MAM, saying, carbonyl iron powder coating, with metamaterials composed of split-ring resonators(SRRs) and wires, we show, both by experiments and by simulations, that the maximum reflection loss is increased significantly and the frequency region for absorption is shifted to lower frequency. The frequency region in which the maximum reflection loss is less than -10 dB shifts from 5-7 GHz to 4.2-6.2 GHz for perpendicular polarization electromagnetic waves and to 4-9 GHz for parallel polarization waves. Simulation results reveal that the magnetic resonance obtained by SRRs and the electric resonance obtained by copper wires are the main factors in enhancing and tuning microwave absorption properties.

Abstract:This study proposes a dual‐function microwave detector based on metamaterials, capable of simultaneously measuring microwave power and polarization angle. It exhibits a linear response to different incident power densities and polarization angles, showing potential application value in the field of microwave wireless power transmission. Microwave detectors play a crucial role in modern technological applications, but traditional detectors suffer from limited functionality, limited detection accuracy, and difficulties in large‐scale deployment. This study proposes a dual‐function microwave detector based on metamaterials, capable of simultaneously measuring microwave power and polarization angle. The detector consists of a metal disc with 12 concave grooves, a dielectric layer, a metal reflector, and a resistive network. The designed detector achieves efficient absorption of 93.54% of microwave energy, with 75.4% dissipated in the resistive component and converted into heat. By detecting the temperature using a thermocouple thermometer, the incoming wave power can be determined, and by discriminating between different resistive temperatures, the polarization angle of the incoming wave can be identified. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the outstanding detection efficiency and stability of this detector. It exhibits a linear response to different incident power densities and polarization angles, showing potential application value in the field of microwave wireless power transmission.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterial usually possesses peculiar constitutive parameters and designable or tun-able EM properties that can not be found in natural material .It becomes a hot research topic among physics , material re-search and information science in recent years due to its ability of manipulation of electromagnetic wave propagation .In this paper, we first describe the theoretical concept of the EM metamaterial and analyze the present research status with the emphasis on how the western countries support the metamaterial research .In the second part, we report several attempts by group in Nanjing University that are trying to apply the metamaterial concept to microwave absorbers or stealth technolo-gy, including design of metamaterial microwave absorbers , chiral metamaterial based microwave absorber , tunable or switchable microwave absorbers.Comparing with conventional microwave absorber , these designs have the advantages of designable physical parameters and tunable properties , enhancing the ability of manipulating the EM wave with metamate-rials.
A Novel Microwave Absorbing Structure Using Fss Metamaterial

Abstract:Artificially constructed electromagnetic metamaterials have attracted much interest recently. A novel absorbing structure in microwave range with metamaterial frequency selective surface (FSS) is presented in this paper. The absorber is a simple unit cell layer planar structure based upon two metamaterial resonators that couple separately electric and magnetic fields so as to absorb almost all incident fields. The resulting structure which consists of metallic elements has superior absorbance characteristics compared to conventional passive absorbers of corresponding thickness. Experimental results are presented and compared to obtained from a finite difference time domain (FDTD) approach, demonstrates a peak absorbance greater than 87% at 12.8 GHz.

Abstract:Metamaterials are artificial media structured on a size scale smaller than the wavelength of external stimuli, that may provide novel tools to significantly enhance the sensitivity and resolution of the sensors. In this paper, we derive the dispersion relation of hollow cylindrical dielectric waveguide, and compute the resonant frequencies and Q factors of the corresponding Whispering-Gallery-Modes (WGM). A metamaterial sensor based on microring resonator operating in WGM is proposed, and the resonance intensity spectrum curves in the frequency range from 185 to 212 THz were studied under different sensing conditions. Full-wave simulations, considering the frequency shift sensitivity influenced by the change of core media permittivity, the thickness and permittivity of the adsorbed substance, prove that the sensitivity of the metamaterial sensor is more than 7 times that of the traditional microring resonator sensor, and the metamaterial layer loaded in the inner side of the microring doesn't affect the high Q performance of the microring resonator.

Abstract:In this chapter some experiments and applications of metamaterials in the microwave regime have been presented. Although metamaterials are composed of structures with finite periodicity, they can still be regarded as effective medium when the periodicity is far smaller than the wavelength. We discuss some interesting experiments such as the tunneling structure and the partial focusing phenomenon and investigate several applications like gradient index circuit and the Luneberg lens antenna. The simulation and experimental results show that metamaterials may have great potentials in the design of microwave devices and antennas.

Abstract:W e studied metamaterial based microwave devices and investigated the effect of electrical size of the constituting elements on the device performance. First, we identify and characterize the suitable subwavelength resonators that are used to create metamaterials. We continued by demonstrating electrically small, metamaterial loaded monopole and patch antennas, miniaturized microwave absorbers, and flat metamaterial lenses with increased resolution. 1. Introduction Response of a medium to an incident wave is determined by the fundamental pa rameters: electric permittivity (e) and magnetic permeability (µ). At any narrow frequency band of the electromagnetic spectrum the concept of metamaterials enables us to design a medium with the desired electromagnetic response. Metamaterial media can have negative permittivity, permeability, and an index of refraction. Particles composed of non-magnetic metal and dielectric substrates were used as the unit cell of the metamaterials. Subwavelength resonators provide the magnetic response and thereby a medium with negative permeability. A rather small electrical size is of importance for the performance of the metamaterial loaded devices such as antennas, absorbers, lenses, and subwavelength apertures.
