Abstract:Different level requests variously real-time behavior in the large scale distributed simulation system. Aiming at the fact many interconnection strategies were made on experience, latency model of information transmission between heterogeneous networks is proposed; real-time perceiving level and high frequency perceiving level are defined to appraise information transferring between heterogeneous networks in large scale distributed simulation system. Four kinds of interconnection ways between real-time network and RTI are analyzed for building a simulation system. The test and application show that this model is feasible for analyzing and selecting of interconnection ways in large scale distributed simulation system.

Abstract:Study of large-scale traffic network has attracted much interests, real-time simulation of large-scale traffic network is the basis of traffic assignment and traffic control. Therefore, designing and implementing the underlined simulation system has practical significance . Because of the scale of traffic network and the number of cars, it is impossible to simulate a city-size traffic network on a single computer, the simulation system has to be distributed on many processors. This paper analyzes and designs a distributed simulation system, experiments shows that it is adequate to simulate the whole network in real-time.

Abstract:Simulation has been widely adopted as a support tool for the validation and experimentation of distributed systems. It allows different devices and applications to be evaluated and analyzed without requiring the actual presence of those machines. Although the simulation plays an important role in investigating and evaluating the behaviors of devices, it results in a serious simulator building problem as the distributed systems become more and more complicated and dynamically data driven. Most of the existing simulators are designed and developed to target a specific type of application, lacking the capabilities to be a configurable and standardized tool for researchers. To solve the adaptability and reusability problems of simulators, this paper proposes a new approach to design and implement a configurable real-time digital simulator for hardware devices that are connected via data buses in distributed systems. First, the proposed simulator uses a logic automaton to simulate the activities of a real device, and generates the incentive data for tested equipment according to the predefined XML-based files. Then with a virtual bus, the simulator can receive, handle, and send data in various network environments, improving the flexibility and adaptability of a simulator design. Experimental results show that the proposed simulator has a high real-time performance, and can meet the increasing requirements of modern simulations of distributed systems.

Abstract:With the emergence of high-performance networks and low-cost clusters, it is more possible to employ parallel and distributed simulation widely. First, the characters of various parallel computers are summarized; the concepts of parallel simulations and distributed simulations are identified. Then the strategies of parallel simulations for continuous systems and discrete event systems are generalized. The merits and defects of them are analyzed, the optimizations of them concerning clusters are proposed as well. At last, the various integrated infrastructures of distributed applications are compared in detail, a conclusion is drawn that CORBA is suitable for simulations in small or medium dimension systems.

Abstract:The modeling and simulation of social networks is an important approach to better understanding complex social phenomena, especially when the inner structure has remarkable impact on behavior. With the availability of unprecedented data sets, simulating large-scale social networks of millions, or even billions, of entities has become a new challenge. Current simulation environments for social studies are mostly sequential and may not be efficient when social networks grow to a certain size. In order to facilitate large-scale social network modeling and simulation, this paper proposes a framework named SUPE-Net, which is based on a parallel discrete event simulation environment YH-SUPE for massively parallel architectures. The framework is designed as a layered architecture with utilities for network generation, algorithms and agent-based modeling. Distributed adjacency lists are used for graph modeling and a reaction–diffusion paradigm is adapted to model dynamical processes. Experiments are performed using PageRank and the susceptible–infected–recovered (SIR) model on social networks with millions of entities. The results demonstrate that SUPE-Net has achieved a speedup of 12, and increased the event-processing rate by 11%, with good scalability and effectiveness.

Abstract:Real-time network simulation refers to simulating computer networks in real time so that the virtual network can interact with real implementations of network protocols, network services, and distributed applications. This paper proposes a new model for real-time simulation of large-scale networks based on powerful network processor. The scheme takes advantage of discrete event system simulation model to simulating large-scale network. This paper describes the implementation of network simulation technology based on Intel IXP2400 platform. Experiment results show that the model can simulate large-scale network, learn routing entries automatically and forward packets at wire-speed.

Abstract:The characteristics of self-organization,distributing and large scale,make P2P network different from the traditional network.It is often difficult to realize P2P related experiments in the traditional experiment environment.The virtual simulation experiment bed towards large scale P2P networks uses system architecture combined by virtuality and reality,high concurrent IO framework driven events,plug-in unit based business logic processing and application of relevant mathematical models.Experiment cases show that the experiment bed can do both large scale virtual simulation experiment and real network experiment in the Internet.The real network experiment will not affect the actual operation of the P2P network.The methods of " reality supplying virtuality" and " reality verifying virtuality" can deepen students 'understanding of the P2P network and cultivate students'comprehensive innovation ability.

Abstract:The Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology being widely adopted in today's both academic research and practical service providing, has many potential advantages, including high scalability and cost-effectiveness. However, the behavior of these P2P systems under large scale and complex interactions is still poorly understood and many challenges in improving their performance remain. A fundamental problem in studying peer-to-peer networks is the evaluation of new protocols. So the technology of P2P network simulation has become a main method for understanding, researching and evaluating the P2P network algorithms and protocols. In this paper, we present a novel large-scale parallel Peer-to-Peer Simulation Framework with High Scalability (HiFiP2P) which uses message-level parallel process. By performing the comparison experiments, we show that HiFiP2P outperforms the existing simulation platform in both aspects of scalability and efficiency. And we show that with HiFiP2P simulations of networks with up to 500,000 nodes are feasible.

Abstract:Traffic network simulation describes movement behaviors and track of individual vehicles. When network is scale-up, the process takes more time and computing resources. Moreover, computing capacity of single processor computer cannot)satisfy simulation requirement. A distributed and parallel computing approach to such a large-scale traffic system might be economical and efficient. This paper designs framework of parallel traffic simulation system by using domain decomposition method according to parallel characteristics of traffic network simulation, in other words, traffic network is partitioned to several sub-networks, and each processor of clusters is responsible for a different sub-network of the simulated region. A network-partition algorithm based on the number of vehicle is used to optimize load balancing. Information exchange mechanism between sub-networks is described. The developed parallel simulation system is implemented in parallel computing platform based on Message Passing Interface. From the results of numerical example, the proposed parallel simulation algorithm can improve speed and efficiency of traffic network simulation. This algorithm provides a foundation for larger scale traffic network simulation and real-time applications.

Abstract:Current simulation technologies support at most hundreds of thousands of nodes, and fall short on the emerging large-scale networking systems that usually involve millions of nodes. We meet this challenge with our distributed simulation engine that is able to run millions of instances and is tested with a production P2P protocol, using commodity PC clusters. This simulation engine is part of the WiDS toolkit, which takes a holistic approach to the research and development of distributed systems. We also propose a critical optimization, called Slow Message Relaxation (SMR), to trade simulation accuracy for performance. By taking advantage of the fact that distributed protocols are resilient to network fluctuation, SMR executes events in a logical time window much wider than the conventional lookahead scheme allows. We analyze and bound the potential effect of the distortion on application logic and other general metrics. Our experiments demonstrate that the simulation engine is able to achieve order of a magnitude speedup with statistically accurate simulation results.

Abstract:Simulation has become the evaluation method of choice for many areas of distributing computing research. However, most existing simulation packages have several limitations on the size and complexity of the system being modeled. Fine grained simulation of complex systems such as Grids requires high computational effort which can only be obtained by using an underlying distributed architecture. We are proposing a new distributed simulation system that has the advantage of being able to model very complex distributed systems while hiding the computational effort from the end-user.

The demands for urban rail transit network operation simulation and the characteristics of simulation system are analyzed; Combining distribution strategy based on function and on area, a hierarchical distributed strategy for urban rail transit network operation simulation is put forward; A simulation architecture based on agent is designed for simulation system to meet the demands of system scalability and operation flexibility. A realized example on this distributed simulation system is introduced also.

Abstract:Many social systems can be described in terms of complex networks of interacting dynamic entities. The research on social system's dynamics, such as epidemic or rumor spreading, are often suffered from constraints of relatively small to medium scale networks, or dependence on the underlying network assumptions, resulting in limited capacity for dynamics prediction. This paper proposes SUPE-Net, an efficient parallel simulation environment for large-scale social networks. Built on parallel discrete event simulation engine, the SUPE-Net enables high fidelity modeling of social networks with different topologies and complex dynamics protocols. SUPE-Net automatically maps large-scale social networks onto multi-processors and adopts the discrete event fashion to study the complex network dynamics. Different network topologies, including random, small-world, scale-free, and real networks, can be easily constructed and plugged in for comparative study. The execution efficiency of SUPE-Net is demonstrated by simulation experiments of gossip dynamics on the actor networks with millions of entities.

Abstract:P2P systems are becoming the dominator of Internet. Such systems are typically composed of thousands to millions of physical computers, which make it difficult to predict their behaviors without a large scale distributed system simulator. This paper is an attempt to predict the behavior of large scale P2P systems by building a novel parallel simulator: AegeanSim, which provides parallel discrete event simulation of such systems on high performance server clusters. We abstract the execution of P2P applications with a specific event model, and parallel the simulation of events in a cluster, thus expanding the simulation scale and boosting the simulation process dramatically. A 1-stage synchronization method is proposed to improve the performance. An event callback interface is designed to implement their application logic easily while keeping the simulator application-independent. We use AegeanSim to predict the behavior of a typical P2P system: BitTorrent. By comparing the simulation behavior of BT with that of related BT studies and verifying its efficiency, scalability and accuracy, we make predictions about the behavior of BT system assuming they are assaulted by different man-made system attacks. Some reasonable results are found: (1) Tracker isolation can hardly work because of its short attacking time window. (2) Limiting the bandwidth of BT may be an efficient way to control it.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the Internet and online social media, the law of information dissemination in social networks needs much experimentation on network propagation calculation. The current network propagation experiments based on the SIR model are widely used in disease research and information dissemination. However, because of the limitations of hardware and software, it is still difficult to conduct ultra-large-scale network propagation calculation. However, the current Internet information dissemination shows the characteristics of large-scale users, large amounts of information, and fast propagation. The shortcomings of small-scale network dissemination experiments based on abstract and simplified methods have been revealed. In this study, the Spark platform is used to implement an experimental algorithm for large-scale network propagation calculation. The performances of the algorithm and Nepidemix stand-alone computing components are compared, and the algorithms advantages and disadvantages are demonstrated. An orthogonal experimental design method was used to design the performance test experiment to find out the factors influencing the algorithm. When there are enough cluster computing resources, the algorithm can break the limitation of network node size and is difficult to develop, which lays the foundation for calculation experiments about very large-scale network propagation.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of the Internet and online social media, information in social networks spreads fast and it is difficult to control. To discover the laws of information dissemination in social networks, it requires a large number of propagation computing experiments in complex networks. The network propagation experiment based on the SIR model is widely used in disease spreading and information dissemination research. Currently, it is difficult to conduct ultra-large-scale network propagation calculations due to hardware, software and some other reasons. However, the information dissemination on Internet has the characteristics of large scale, large amount of information and fast speed of transmission. Smaller-scale network communication experiments were designed based on the abstraction method, but they gradually failed to meet the growing demand for computing. This paper uses Spark to implement a very large-scale network propagation computational experimental algorithm. The performance of the algorithm and the Nepidemix single-core propagation computing component are compared to show its advantages and disadvantages. The algorithm can carry out experiments of information dissemination with millions of nodes if there are enough cluster computing resources. And it is easy to get started with development. Based on this, it can efficiently conduct information dissemination simulation in large-scale complex networks. It laid the foundation for other studies such as the dissemination, monitoring, forecasting and intervention of public opinion.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the way to develop a laboratory testing, measurement and analysis platforms for the fundamental problems with the information networks and their applications. The platform applies software defined network (SDN) and virtualization technologies for scalability, reconfigurability and flexibility. We successfully emulated large-scale scenarios at the laboratory scale platform by generating numerous virtual nodes in a server. The nodes' physical characteristics (such as CPU frequency, memory, operating system, etc.) and the link characteristics (rate, BER, delay, etc.) between any two nodes are considered so as to simulate the real space environment approximately. Emulation performances show that the proposed platform has a scalable network emulation architecture and can provide better approach to simulate a complex, dynamic and high precision network.
