Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates the Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP), which is an extension of the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), and it searches for an optimal tour in a clustered graph, such that every cluster is visited exactly once. In this paper, we describe a novel Memetic Algorithm (MA) for solving efficiently the GTSP. Our proposed MA has at its core a genetic algorithm (GA), completed by a Chromosome Enhancement Procedure (CEP), which is based on a TSP solver and the Shortest Path (SP) algorithm and for improving the convergence characteristics of the GA, a Local Search (LS) operation is applied for the best chromosomes in each generation. We tested our algorithm on a set of well-known instances from the literature and the achieved results prove that our novel memetic algorithm is highly competitive against the existing solution approaches from the specialized literature.

Abstract:Memetic algorithms are evolutionary algorithms that apply a local search process to refine solutions to hard problems. Memetic algorithms are the subject of intense scientific research and have been successfully applied to a multitude of real-world problems ranging from the construction of optimal university exam timetables, to the prediction of protein structures and the optimal design of space-craft trajectories. "Recent Advances in Memetic Algorithms" presents a rich state-of-the-art gallery of works on Memetic algorithms. Recent Advances in Memetic Algorithms is the first book that focuses on this technology as the central topical matter. This monograph gives a coherent, integrated view on both good practice examples and new trends including a concise and self-contained introduction to Memetic Algorithms. It is a necessary read for postgraduate students and researchers interested in recent advances in search and optimization technologies based on Memetic algorithms, but can also be used as complement to undergraduate textbooks on artificial intelligence.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">Logistics network design is a major strategic issue in supply chain management of both forward and reverse flow, which industrial players are forced but not equipped to handle. To avoid sub-optimal solution derived by separated design, we consider an integrated forward reverse logistics network design, which is enriched by using a complete delivery graph. We formulate the cyclic seven-stage logistics network problem as a NP hard mixed integer linear programming model. To find the near optimal solution, we apply a memetic algorithm with a neighborhood search mechanism and a novel chromosome representation including two segments. The power of extended random path-based direct encoding method is shown by a comparison to commercial package in terms of both quality of solution and computational time. We show that the proposed algorithm is able to efficiently find a good solution for the flexible integrated logistics network.</p>
Memetic Search for Vehicle Routing with Simultaneous Pickup-Delivery and Time Windows

Abstract:The Vehicle Routing Problem with Simultaneous Pickup-Delivery and Time Windows (VRPSPDTW) has attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to its wide application in modern logistics. Since VRPSPDTW is NP-hard and exact methods are only applicable to small-scale instances, heuristics and meta-heuristics are commonly adopted. In this paper we propose a novel Memetic Algorithm with efficient local search and extended neighborhood, dubbed MATE, to solve this problem. Compared to existing algorithms, the advantages of MATE lie in two aspects. First, it is capable of more effectively exploring the search space, due to its novel initialization procedure, crossover and large-step-size operators. Second, it is also more efficient in local exploitation, due to its sophisticated constant-time-complexity move evaluation mechanism. Experimental results on public benchmarks show that MATE outperforms all the state-of-the-art algorithms, and notably, finds new best-known solutions on 12 instances (65 instances in total). Moreover, a comprehensive ablation study is also conducted to show the effectiveness of the novel components integrated in MATE. Finally, a new benchmark of large-scale instances, derived from a real-world application of the JD logistics, is introduced, which can serve as a new and more challenging test set for future research.

Abstract:In case of using sales transaction and products availability data, discovering a preference list of customers (named customer types) is a challenging topic due to the lack of data. This process is inferred as demand estimation because by knowing the preference of each customer and available products in a time period in the future, we can estimate the demand of each product in case of arriving pre-known customer types. In this paper, we proposed an approach to find the frequency of each data point (solution) in a search space, helping us to apply a better local search in an evolutionary algorithm. Here, we proposed a memetic algorithm to discover customer types with the help of found frequency data. Afterward, we used five real hotel datasets to implement our memetic algorithm and finally compared this implementation with the two pre-proposed approaches, one evolutionary approach (genetic), and one mathematical approach (rank based). Evaluation proceeds in two phases in both of which, memetic shows a better performance than the other two approaches owing to using local search done with help of frequency data.

Abstract:Instant delivery is an intermediary bridge for same-city O2O services and an important part of urban short-distance logistics. The route planning and scheduling of instant delivery need to balance cost and customer satisfaction and consider the impact of traffic conditions on the distribution process. In this paper, we propose a vehicle routing problem model considering two types of customer time windows under time-dependent road networks and design a memetic algorithm combined with genetic algorithm and variable neighborhood search to solve the problem. By comparing the results of the different time periods and conducting sensitivity analysis for the two types of customer time windows, the effectiveness of the model and algorithm is verified.

Abstract:Inspired by biological evolution, a plethora of algorithms with evolutionary features have been proposed. These algorithms have strengths in certain aspects, thus yielding better optimization performance in a particular problem. However, in a wide range of problems, none of them are superior to one another. Synergetic combination of these algorithms is one of the potential ways to ameliorate their search ability. Based on this idea, this paper proposes an adaptive memetic computing as the synergy of a genetic algorithm, differential evolution, and estimation of distribution algorithm. The ratio of the number of fitter solutions produced by the algorithms in a generation defines their adaptability features in the next generation. Subsequently, a subset of solutions undergoes local search using the evolutionary gradient search algorithm. This memetic technique is then implemented in two prominent frameworks of multiobjective optimization: the domination- and decomposition-based frameworks. The performance of the adaptive memetic algorithms is validated in a wide range of test problems with different characteristics and difficulties.

Abstract:Memetic Computing is a subject in computer science which considers complex structures as the combination of simple agents, memes, whose evolutionary interactions lead to intelligent structures capable of problem-solving. This paper focuses on Memetic Computing optimization algorithms and proposes a counter-tendency approach for algorithmic design. Research in the field tends to go in the direction of improving existing algorithms by combining different methods or through the formulation of more complicated structures. Contrary to this trend, we instead focus on simplicity, proposing a structurally simple algorithm with emphasis on processing only one solution at a time. The proposed algorithm, namely Three Stage Optimal Memetic Exploration, is composed of three memes; the first stochastic and with a long search radius, the second stochastic and with a moderate search radius and the third deterministic and with a short search radius. The bottom-up combination of the three operators by means of a natural trial and error logic, generates a robust and efficient optimizer, capable of competing with modern complex and computationally expensive algorithms. This is suggestive of the fact that complexity in algorithmic structures can be unnecessary, if not detrimental, and that simple bottom-up approaches are likely to be competitive is here invoked as an extension to Memetic Computing basing on the philosophical concept of Ockham's Razor. An extensive experimental setup on various test problems and one digital signal processing application is presented. Numerical results show that the proposed approach, despite its simplicity and low computational cost displays a very good performance on several problems, and is competitive with sophisticated algorithms representing the-state-of-the-art in computational intelligence optimization.

Abstract:The article aims to address a research gap concerning the adequate configuration of a Memetic Algorithm adapted to solve the Job-Shop Scheduling Problem. The goal was accomplished by means of conducting a comparative study of 16 variants of a Memetic Algorithm, characterised with different places of hybridisation and local search methods applied. The study involved the solution of eleven instances of JSP and the comparison of the results with the results achieved with an Evolutionary Algorithm lacking the mechanism of hybridisation and selected local search methods. The utilitarian significance of the problem also involved the use of assessment measures intended for both practical applications and research purposes.

Abstract:In recent years, on-demand bus services have become popular because of their convenience and flexibility. Customers reserve their seats by sending a demand with a pickup location, a destination, and a time constraint. This study addresses a multi-vehicle dial-a-ride problem. We introduce an improved genetic algorithm to minimize a multi-objective cost function that considers transportation costs and customer inconvenience for a vehicle-dispatching system. We propose probability distribution functions to decide which chromosomes can survive and which will be selected as a parent stochastically. Solutions for the next generation are generated by applying four types of genetic operators through a parameterized probability distribution. Experiments on our specific class of vehicle-dispatching systems show that the new algorithm has achieved superior performances to state-of-the-art classical methods, such as traditional genetic algorithm, sequential cheapest insertion heuristic, simulated annealing, and tabu search.

Abstract:In this paper, a competitive memetic algorithm (CMA) is proposed to solve the multi-objective distributed permutation flow-shop scheduling problem (MODPFSP) with the makespan and total tardiness criteria. Two populations corresponding to two different objectives are employed in the CMA. Some objective-specific operators are designed for each population, and a special interaction mechanism between two populations is designed. Moreover, a competition mechanism is proposed to adaptively adjust the selection rates of the operators, and some knowledge-based local search operators are developed to enhance the exploitation ability of the CMA. In addition, the influence of the parameters on the performance of the CMA is investigated by using the Taguchi method of design-of-experiment. Finally, extensive computational tests and comparisons are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CMA in solving the MODPFSP.

Abstract:In this paper, a new memetic algorithm (MA) is proposed for the muti-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem (MO-FJSP) with the objectives to minimize the makespan, total workload and critical workload. By using well-designed chromosome encoding/decoding scheme and genetic operators, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is first adapted for the MO-FJSP. Then the MA is developed by incorporating a novel local search algorithm into the adapted NSGA-II, where several mechanisms to balance the genetic search and local search are employed. In the proposed local search, a hierarchical strategy is adopted to handle the three objectives, which mainly considers the minimization of makespan, while the concern of the other two objectives is reflected in the order of trying all the possible actions that could generate the acceptable neighbor. Experimental results on well-known benchmark instances show that the proposed MA outperforms significantly two off-the-shelf multi-objective evolutionary algorithms and four state-of-the-art algorithms specially proposed for the MO-FJSP.

Abstract:This paper addresses an open vehicle routing problem with predetermined time windows under uncertain travel times (OVRP-UT). A novel light-robust-optimization model is proposed by integrating the goal programming formulations with set-based descriptions of the problem data, which can enable as many customers as possible to meet their demands within a group of predetermined time windows. An effective memetic algorithm (MA) is presented for solving the OVRP-UT model. We design a heuristic-based initialization mechanism to generate an initial population with a high level of quality and diversity. We design a timely-vertices based crossover operator and mutation operator to give birth to the offspring with high quality and good structure built in the search process. We provide a hybrid selection mechanism and a population updating strategy to remain the diversity of the population. We develop a self-adapted crossover and mutation rate to help the MA suit the different phases during the search process. A comprehensive simulation experiment based on the 320 benchmark instances demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:<p>With the rapid growth in the number of motor vehicles, pollution from traffic has become an increasingly serious problem, due to high carbon emission and low load utilization rate. It is reasonable to plan vehicle driving routes on urban roads to deliver services, (i.e., to tackle the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP)).Previous studies on CARP have typically considered at most two objectives simultaneously; however, two objectives are not sufficient to solve the pollution problem. Consequently, a many-objective optimization model of multi-depot heterogeneous-vehicle CARP is constructed in this study that considers four objective functions: total cost, makespan, carbon emission and load utilization rate. Furthermore, based on the ideas of two-archive and information entropy, we propose a memetic algorithm based on Two_Arch2 (MATA) to tackle the constructed model. The experimental results show that MATA effectively optimizes the many-objective model and solves the problem.</p>

A novel memetic algorithm with random multi-local-search: a case study of TSP.

Abstract:Memetic algorithms (MAs) have been shown to be very effective in finding near optimal solutions to hard combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, we propose a novel memetic algorithm (MsMA), in which a new local search scheme is introduced. We called this local search scheme as random Multi-Local-Search (MLS). The MLS is composed of several local search schemes, each of which executes with a predefined probability to increase the diversity of the population. The combination of MsMA with the crossover operator edge assembly crossover (EAX) on the classic combinatorial optimization problem Traveling Salesman Problem(TSP) is studied, and comparisons are also made with some best known MAs. We have found that it is significantly outperforming the known MAs on almost all of the selected instances. Furthermore, we have proposed a new crossover named M-EAX, which has more powerful local search ability than the EAX. The experimental results show that the MsMA with M-EAX has given a further improvement to the existing EAX.
A Memetic Algorithm To Find a Hamiltonian Cycle in a Hamiltonian Graph

Abstract:We present a memetic algorithm (\maa) approach for finding a Hamiltonian cycle in a Hamiltonian graph. The \ma is based on a proven approach to the Asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problem (\atspp) that, in this contribution, is boosted by the introduction of more powerful local searches. Our approach also introduces a novel technique that sparsifies the input graph under consideration for Hamiltonicity and dynamically augments it during the search. Such a combined heuristic approach helps to prove Hamiltonicity by finding a Hamiltonian cycle in less time. In addition, we also employ a recently introduced polynomial-time reduction from the \hamcyc to the Symmetric \tsp, which is based on computing the transitive closure of the graph. Although our approach is a metaheuristic, i.e., it does not give a theoretical guarantee for finding a Hamiltonian cycle, we have observed that the method is successful in practice in verifying the Hamiltonicity of a larger number of instances from the \textit{Flinder University Hamiltonian Cycle Problem Challenge Set} (\fhcpsc), even for the graphs that have large treewidth. The experiments on the \fhcpscc instances and a computational comparison with five recent state-of-the-art baseline approaches show that the proposed method outperforms those for the majority of the instances in the \fhcpsc.

Abstract:This paper proposes a single machine scheduling problem with learning-effect and release times by considering two objectives requiring minimization of makespan and total tardiness, simultaneously. Due to the NP-hardness of this problem, two memetic algorithms with meme variants are presented for solving the bi-objective problem and applied by combining three different scalarization methods, including weighted sum, conic, and tchebycheff. The performance of all memetic algorithms with the meme is investigated across randomly generated twenty-seven test problems ranging from ‘small’ to ‘large’ size. The experimental results indicate that the Multimeme Memetic Algorithm using the tchebycheff outperforms the other algorithms producing the best-known results for almost all bi-objective single machine scheduling instances with learning-effects. All algorithms perform effectively in solving large-sized problems with up to 200 jobs.

Abstract:The paper considers the hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with multiprocessor tasks. Motivated by the computational complexity of the problem, we propose a memetic algorithm for this problem in the paper. We first describe the implementation details of a genetic algorithm, which is used in the memetic algorithm. We then propose a constraint programming based branch-and-bound algorithm to be employed as the local search engine of the memetic algorithm. Next, we present the new memetic algorithm. We lastly explain the computational experiments carried out to evaluate the performance of three algorithms (genetic algorithm, constraint programming based branch-and-bound algorithm, and memetic algorithm) in terms of both the quality of the solutions produced and the efficiency. These results demonstrate that the memetic algorithm produces better quality solutions and that it is very efficient.

Abstract:In this paper, a memetic algorithm with competition（MAC） is proposed to solve the capacitated green vehicle routing problem（CGVRP）. Firstly, the permutation array called traveling salesman problem（TSP） route is used to encode the solution, and an effective decoding method to construct the CGVRP route is presented accordingly. Secondly, the k-nearest neighbor（k NN） based initialization is presented to take use of the location information of the customers. Thirdly, according to the characteristics of the CGVRP, the search operators in the variable neighborhood search（VNS） framework and the simulated annealing（SA） strategy are executed on the TSP route for all solutions. Moreover, the customer adjustment operator and the alternative fuel station（AFS） adjustment operator on the CGVRP route are executed for the elite solutions after competition. In addition, the crossover operator is employed to share information among different solutions. The effect of parameter setting is investigated using the Taguchi method of design-ofexperiment to suggest suitable values. Via numerical tests, it demonstrates the effectiveness of both the competitive search and the decoding method. Moreover, extensive comparative results show that the proposed algorithm is more effective and efficient than the existing methods in solving the CGVRP.
