Abstract:A real-time state filtering and prediction scheme which is adaptive, recursive, and suboptimal is proposed for discrete time nonlinear dynamic systems with either Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise. The proposed scheme (PR) estimates states adaptively whenever both the observation is available and there exists a non-zero and finite number of real state roots of the observation model, otherwise the PR estimates states non-adaptively. The PR state transition and observation functions are as general as the state transition and observation functions for particle filters. The PR is based upon discrete noise approximation, state quantization, and a suboptimal implementation of multiple hypothesis testing. The PR first detects state estimate divergence points along the time axis, and then state estimate divergences are prevented by introducing new admissible state quantization levels; whereas the extended Kalman filter (EKF), sampling importance resampling (SIR) particle filter (bootstrap filter), and auxiliary sampling importance resampling (ASIR) particle filter produce diverging state estimates from actual state values for many dynamic models. The PR uses state transition functions in order to calculate transition probabilities from gates to gates. If these transition probabilities are somehow available, then state transition functions are not needed for state estimation with the PR; whereas state transition functions are necessary for state estimation with both particle filters and the EKF. The PR is very suitable for state estimation with either constraints imposed on state estimates or missing observations. The PR is more general than grid-based estimation approaches. Monte Carlo simulations have shown the effectiveness of the PR, that is, the PR performance is better than the performances of the EKF, SIR, and ASIR particle filters for many nonlinear models with white Gaussian noise, four examples of which are presented in the paper.

Abstract:The information about the states of the dynamic system is crucial for the successful implementation of model-based dynamic optimization and nonlinear model predictive control strategies. For large-scale nonlinear systems, the moving horizon estimation and globally iterated extended Kalman filtering may not be appropriate for applications with short sampling periods because of the time consuming computation. In addition, the modelling error and the unmeasured disturbances should be considered by the feedback of the real-time measurements. In this paper, a new approach is proposed in which the computation time and the use of real-time measurements are taken into account. The independent variables are reconciled by dynamic optimization, and the state variables are obtained by one-step simulation under the reconciled independent variables. The approach is verified on a pilot heat-integrated distillation column system. The results show that the proposed approach is effectiveness for the real-time state estimation of nonlinear large-scale systems.

Abstract:A novel approach is presented for nonlinear recursive estimation of dynamic discrete-time systems with model uncertainties. The formulation of this estimation problem is the same as for minimum model error estimation, but the solution of the nonlinear two-point boundary-value problem is obtained using the technique of invariant imbedding so that the resulting algorithm can be implemented in real time. The advantage of the proposed estimation over other invariant-imbedding-based sequential estimators is that the covariance constraint condition developed in the minimum model error estimation is used to choose the weighting matrix and model errors are modeled as time-varying parameters whose variations are chosen to be minimal. The simulation results show that the proposed method is effective and feasible in obtaining optimal estimation for nonlinear systems with nonlinear measurements in the face of significant model errors and large initial condition errors.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the recursive estimation problem for a class of discrete-time nonlinear stochastic systems with multi-step transmission delays, multiple packet dropouts and correlated noises. The stochastic nonlinearity is described by statistical means, and noises are assumed to be one-step autocorrelated and cross-correlated. To convert the original system into the nonlinear stochastic parameterized one, some new variables are firstly introduced. Then, by applying the innovation analysis approach, the optimal linear estimators including filter, multi-step predictor and smoother are presented. The proposed algorithms, which are dependent on the probabilities of delays and data losses, the matrices used to describe the stochastic nonlinearity as well as one-step correlation coefficient matrices, are expressed by the Riccati and Lyapunov equations. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the convergence of the state covariance and the existence of the steady-state estimators for the time-invariant nonlinear systems. Finally, a simulation example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:This paper investigates distributed state estimation for a class of discrete-time linear systems, with dynamics subject to parameter perturbation and Gaussian noise simultaneously. A sensor network is adopted, where each sensor estimates the system state by fusing its own measurements and its neighbors’ information. A novel distributed state estimator is proposed, where the estimator gains are designed by using a state-error augmented technique. To check whether the estimator is effective on the infinite horizon, a very simple criterion only on system parameters is developed. Moreover, a relation between the estimation error covariance and the system state covariance is revealed, which shows that a performance index similar to the signal-to-noise ratio is ensured by the designed estimator. Compared with the existing methods in the literature, such as augmented methods and linear matrix inequalities-based methods, the estimation method proposed in this paper is much more computationally efficient. Finally, several numerical simulation results are demonstrated to illustrate the effectiveness of the new estimator.

Abstract:This study presents the state estimation problem of discrete‐time nonlinear stochastic system with non‐Gaussian noise. To further improve estimation accuracy, a recursive nonlinear smoother is put forward on the basis of minimizing l1 norm of model errors. The proposed l1 norm‐based filter and smoother is realized by using unscented transformation to implement statistical linear regression applying to non‐linear models. This study addresses the state estimation problem of discrete‐time non‐linear stochastic systems with non‐Gaussian noises, particularly impulsive noises. Instead of minimizing the mean square error of the state estimate, which tends to excessively focus on outliers caused by non‐Gaussian noises, the l1 norm‐based non‐linear recursive filter (L1KF) is put forward in this paper. Here, minimizing the l1 norm of model errors is actually to pursue the minimum sum of absolute values of all errors, which is equitable to all model errors rather than paying much attention on outliers. To further improve estimation accuracy, a recursive nonlinear smoother (L1KS) is proposed, based on minimizing the l1 norm of model errors. The proposed l1 norm‐based filter and smoother are implemented using unscented transformation for statistical linear regression applied to nonlinear models. Additionally, the computational complexity of the proposed method is analysed. Simulation results of tracking a radar target with impulsive noises demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimator.

Abstract:In this article, the recursive state estimation problem is investigated for a class of multi‐rate systems with multiplicative noises where the measurement outputs are collected from sensors with certain resolutions. Due to the existence of the sensor resolution, the actual measurement output of the sensor might deviate from its true value and such a deviation, if not adequately taken into account, would lead to serious degradation of the estimation performance, and we are therefore motivated to develop an effective state estimation algorithm that is insensitive to the sensor‐resolution‐induced measurement distortions. The aim of the considered estimation problem is to design a state estimator such that an upper bound on the estimation error covariance is first guaranteed and then minimized by properly choosing the estimator gain. Moreover, a simulation example with application background on moving target tracking problem is presented to verify the validity of the developed recursive state estimation algorithm.

Abstract:In this article, the probl of state estimation for discrete‐time neural networks with mixed time‐varying delays is investigated. The mixed time delays consist of both discrete and distributed delays. An appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional put forward to reflect the mixed time‐varying delays is proposed to establish sufficient conditions for the existence of admissible state estimators. The conditions are described in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which guarantee the estimation error to be globally exponentially stable in the presence of mixed time‐varying delays. Then, the desired estimator matrix gain can be characterized in terms of the solution to these LMIs. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the distributed estimation problem for nonlinear systems with unknown but bounded noises, where the bounds of noises are also unknown. By modeling a new distributed estimation error system including the bias among local estimation errors, a bounded recursive optimization scheme is constructed to determine the matrix gains of distributed estimator. Notice that the constructed optimization problem for each local estimator, which can be easily solved by the existing software applications, is only dependent on the itself information and its neighboring information, and thus the design of distributed estimator and the determination of estimator gains are all fully distributed. Finally, a range-only target tracking system is employed to show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed methods.
Recursive Dynamic State Estimation for Power Systems with an Incomplete Nonlinear DAE Model

Abstract:Power systems are highly complex, large-scale engineering systems subject to many uncertainties, which makes accurate mathematical modeling challenging. This paper proposes a novel, centralized dynamic state estimator for power systems that lack models of some components. Including the available dynamic evolution equations, algebraic network equations, and phasor measurements, we apply the least squares criterion to estimate all dynamic and algebraic states recursively. The approach results in an algorithm that generalizes the iterated extended Kalman filter and does not require static network observability. We further derive a graph theoretic condition for placing phasor measurement units that guarantees the uniqueness of the solution. A numerical study evaluates the performance under short circuits in the network and load changes and shows superior tracking performance compared to robust procedures from the literature within computational times that are feasible for real-time application.

Abstract:This article studies the problem of dissipativity-based asynchronous state estimation for a class of discrete-time Markov jump neural networks subject to randomly occurring nonlinearities, sensor saturations, and stochastic parameter uncertainties. First, two stochastic nonlinearities occurring in the system are described by statistical means and obey two Bernoulli processes independently. Then, the hidden Markov model is used to characterize the real communication environment closely between the designed estimator and the system model due to the networked-induced phenomenons that also lead to randomly occurring parametric uncertainties of the estimator considered modeled by two Bernoulli processes. A new criterion is established to guarantee that the resulting error system is stochastically stable with predefined dissipativity performance. Finally, we provide a simulation example to validate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A new recursive state estimation procedure is derived for a networked system. This estimation utilizes only local system output, can be easily realized in a distributed way, and can be simply scaled to systems with a large amount of subsystems. It is proved that when estimation error variances are adopted in performance comparisons, the optimal gain matrix is usually unique. Recursive and explicit expressions are derived for both this optimal gain matrix and the covariance matrix of the corresponding estimation errors. Some numerical simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested procedure.

Abstract:A recursive state estimation procedure is derived for a linear time varying system with both parametric uncertainties and stochastic measurement droppings. This estimator has a similar form as that of Kalman filter with intermittent observations, but its parameters should be adjusted when a plant output measurement arrives. A new recursive form is derived for the pseudo-covariance matrix of estimation errors. Based on a Riemannian metric for positive definite matrices, some necessary and sufficient conditions have been obtained for the strict contractiveness of this recursion. It has also been proved that under some controllability and observability conditions, as well as some weak requirements on measurement arrival probability, the update gain of this recursive robust state estimator and the mean of its squared estimation errors converge in probability one respectively to a corresponding stationary distribution. Numerical simulation results show that estimation accuracy of the suggested procedure is more robust against parametric modelling errors than Kalman filter.

Abstract:State estimation of nonlinear dynamic systems is an important problem in practice. This paper proposes a recursive state estimation method for nonlinear dynamic systems using Gaussian processes (GP) and pre-computed local linear models. Gaussian processes exhibit remarkable learning, or nonlinear regression capabilities from measurement data. The incorporation of pre-computed local linear models reduces the amount of data required and improves the regression performance of the GP. Based on such an improved GP model for nonlinear dynamic systems, a recursive Bayesian filtering method is implemented for the estimation of the unknown states of the system. Simulations on an aircraft benchmark model demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of estimating the unknown angle of attack of the aircraft, and the existence of the local linear models significantly improves the estimation performance of the filter. This method is especially useful in a control systems design context in which local linearisations of nonlinear dynamic systems are usually readily available.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of asynchronous estimation in the presence of packet losses for the randomly sampling nonlinear system. Packet losses occur at the control input and at the measurement side. Firstly, the synchronization of the asynchronous sampling system is realized by weighting the state of the adjacent state update points. Secondly, the projection theorem is used to estimate the system state at the sampling time. Due to modeling errors and unmodeled dynamics, obtaining an accurate dynamic model is challenging. Therefore, observation inference based on interpolation techniques is proposed to solve the asynchronous estimation problem. Furthermore, the algorithm is extended to multi-sensor systems to obtain a distributed fusion estimator. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:This paper studies the state estimation problem for linear discrete-time systems based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Under the Gaussian assumption on the predicted density, the quantized MMSE filter is derived which has a similar form as the Kalman filter with the raw measurement simply replaced by its quantized version. The quantization effects are explicitly quantified by adding a nonnegative term to the filtering error covariance derived from the Kalman filter at the measurement update step. Finally, experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed filtering algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of state estimation for discrete-time neural networks with time-varying delays is investigated. Attention is focused on the design of a state estimator to estimate the neuron states, through available output measurements. First, a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to establish sufficient conditions for the existence of admissible state estimators. These conditions are expressed in the form of LMIs, which guarantee the estimation error to be globally exponentially stable in the presence of time-varying delays. Then, the desired estimator matrix gain is characterized in terms of the solution to these LMIs. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Abstract:This paper describes a method for the online state estimation of systems described by a general class of linear noncausal time-varying difference descriptor equations subject to uncertainties. The method is based on the notions of a linear minimax estimation and an index of causality introduced here for singular difference equations. The online minimax estimator is derived by the application of the dynamical programming and Moore's pseudoinverse theory to the minimax estimation problem. It coincides with Kalman's filter for regular systems. A numerical example of the state estimation for 2D noncasual descriptor system is presented.
