Lastly, potential applications of polymer/surfactant interaction, with particular reference to the cosmetics area, are outlined.

Abstract:Controlling viscosity of aqueous surfactant solutions is very important for practical formulations. This can be done by having polymers interact with surfactants, thereby forming interconnected physical networks, where main ways of interaction are electrostatic and hydrophobic forces. Polymer-surfactant interactions are long established for viscosity control, but there are many ongoing activities. They are driven by wanting more biocompatible systems, which depend intricately on the choice of surfactant and polymer, and general predictions are not simple for such systems. Surfactants form spherical or wormlike micelles or vesicles. By choice of (co)polymers one can construct systems responsive to external parameters, like temperature or pH, for having tailored rheological properties. Here we describe recent developments with a focus on systems of low concentration, being interesting for applications. In summary, rheological control of polymer-surfactant systems is a versatile topic and a field of colloid science with high relevance for practical formulations.

Insights into interfacial behaviours of surfactant and polymer: A molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Surfactants and polymers are two common chemicals used to stabilize the wet foam, but molecular-level insights into the structures, dynamics and hydrogen bonds of these agents and water at the surface are still lack. Herein a series of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to explore the behaviors of surfactants/polymers at liquid films. Simulations confirmed that OPC water model can better reproduce the surface tension, and surface tension decreases while interface thickness increases as the increase of surfactant surface concentration. Our findings provide molecular insights on the morphology transitions of surfactant monolayers, which is dependent on the van der Waals energy among surfactants. Surfactant monolayers greatly retard the mobility of the interfacial water molecules, but such capability only exists nearby interfacial area. By adding polymers inside, water dynamics can be retarded further through the hydrogen bonding effects. In other words, polymers in the bulk solution produce a “bolt-like” effect which constrains the water around the chains.

Abstract:Unique macromolecular structures known as polymer brushes are made of individual polymer chains that are free at one end and attached to a solid surface at the other. Polymer brushes show some fascinating characteristics when compared to other polymer materials, due to which they are used in various applications like drug delivery, antifouling coating, antibacterial coating for biomedical devices, and especially as a responsive material where surface topology, architecture, and composition can be changed by changing the external environment. Significant progress in surface and interface engineering has been made possible by surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization techniques. All these properties can also be enhanced by using surfactants. Surfactants when interacting with polymer brush shows changes in thickness, wettability, roughness, etc., depending on the type of polymer brush and surfactants. Surfactants help in boosting the topology of the brush structure. This review article will initially discuss about polymer brushes and surfactants separately and then discuss the interactions involved between them and their possible explanations.

Abstract:Polymeric surfactants are amphiphilic molecules with two or more different types of monomers. If one type of monomer interacts favorably with a liquid, and another type of monomer interacts favorably with another, immiscible liquid, then polymeric surfactants adsorb at the interface between the two liquids and reduce the interfacial tension. The effects of polymer architecture on the structural and thermodynamic properties of the liquid–liquid interface are studied using molecular simulations. The interface is modeled with a non-additive binary Lennard-Jones fluid in the two-phase region of the phase diagram. Block and gradient copolymer surfactants are represented with coarse-grained, bead-spring models, where each component of the polymer favors one or the other liquid. Gradient copolymers have a greater concentration at the interface than do block copolymers because the gradient copolymers adopt conformations partially aligned with the interface. The interfacial tension is determined as a function of the surface excess of polymeric surfactant. Gradient copolymers are more potent surfactants than block copolymers because the gradient copolymers cross the dividing surface multiple times, effectively acting as multiple individual surfactants. For a given surface excess, the interfacial tension decreases monotonically when changing from a block to a gradient architecture. The coarse-grained simulations are complemented by all-atom simulations of acrylic-acid/styrene copolymers at the chloroform-water interface, which have been studied in experiments. The agreement between the simulations (both coarse-grained and atomistic) and experiments is shown to be excellent, and the molecular-scale structures identified in the simulations help explain the variation of surfactancy with copolymer architecture.

Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects

Abstract:Oppositely charged polymer-surfactant systems are expected to interact with formation of coacervate complexes near composition of charge-neutrality. Such behaviour is widely used in formulated products ( e.g. household and personal care), where the co-deposition of coacervates and active ingredients on various surfaces is triggered by dilution. A transition towards the use of more sustainable ingredients is currently ongoing as a response to the need of more environmentally conscious choices in production, albeit slowed down by the often more complex and not fully understood bulk and interfacial behaviour of new ingredients. In this work, mixtures of a medium-chain fatty acid (sodium decanoate) and two grades of bio-based cationic modified inulin were studied. The phase behaviour was determined in a wide composition matrix. The formation of coacervate complexes was observed for the mixture with the higher charge density polymer at a surfactant concentration of 1-3 wt%, close to the surfactant critical micellar concentration in pure water. Such behaviour was confirmed by DLS and SAXS data, suggesting surfactant-polymer complexation in a concentrated phase of packed micelles with a micelle-to-micelle distance of ~4.5 nm. In situ ellipsometry and neutron reflectometry experiments were conducted to study the effect on surface deposition when diluting. The ellipsometry showed an adsorbed mass of ~1.3-1.9 mg/m 2 , consistent with the deposition of a coacervate layer, and considerably higher than the neat, adsorbed polymer layer of ~0.3 mg/m 2 . In the case of the neutron reflectometry experiments, dilution was performed before contact with the surface (pre-mixing), and no adsorption of coacervates was observed, but rather the adsorption of a polymer layer (0.49-0.85 mg/m 2 ). The different results obtained with the different techniques highlight the kinetic nature of bulk coacervate formation and deposition, and the competition between these two phenomena. Maximal deposition can be achieved if one can control this time window either by tuning the composition of the system or the experimental set-up, to mimic the conditions of a specific application.

Abstract:Biosurfactants (BS) have been extensively researched due to their potential applications in various fields, including textiles, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and oil remediation. These BS possess a diverse range of physical, chemical, and biological properties. In recent years, researchers have combined these biosurfactants with both natural and synthetic polymers, resulting in the development of advanced material systems that exhibit a unique combination of properties. This review focuses on highlighting the recent advancements in these biosurfactant-polymer material systems and identifies existing gaps in the literature. The combination of biosurfactants with polymers has led to the formation of interpenetrated hydrogels, films, chemically modified surfaces, vesicles, functionalized nano-fiber non-woven mats, nano-formulations, and nano-assemblies. Some studies have also investigated the interactions between biosurfactants and polymer molecules. In most cases, non-specific, non-covalent interactions, such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions, have been found to govern the properties of these systems. Moreover, promising results have been achieved through the covalent modification of polymer surfaces, followed by functionalization using biosurfactant molecules. The literature demonstrates that these advanced materials could find applications in various fields, including drug delivery, bioremediation, biomedical materials and as antimicrobial agents. These findings indicate the promising potential of biosurfactant-polymer systems for future advancements in these areas.

Abstract:Abstract Macromolecules are essential cellular components in biological systems responsible for performing a large number of functions that are necessary for growth and perseverance of living organisms. Proteins, lipids and carbohydrates are three major classes of biological macromolecules. To predict the structure, function, and behaviour of any cluster of macromolecules, it is necessary to understand the interaction between them and other components through basic principles of chemistry and physics. An important number of macromolecules are present in mixtures with surfactants, where a combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions is responsible for the specific properties of any solution. It has been demonstrated that surfactants can help the formation of helices in some proteins thereby promoting protein structure formation. On the other hand, there is extensive research towards the use of surfactants to solubilize drugs and pharmaceuticals; therefore, it is evident that the interaction between surfactants with macromolecules is important for many applications which includes environmental processes and the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we describe the properties of different types of surfactants that are relevant for their physicochemical interactions with biological macromolecules, from macromolecules–surfactant complexes to hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.

Physico-chemical study of polymer mixtures formed by a polycation and a zwitterionic copolymer in aqueous solution and upon adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces

Abstract:The adsorption of mixtures of charged polymers onto solid surfaces presents a big interest in different technological and industrial fields, and in particular, in cosmetics. This requires to deepen on the most fundamental physico-chemical bases governing the deposition, which is generally correlated to the interactions occurring in solution. This work explores the interaction in solution of model polymer mixtures formed by a cationic homopolymer (poly(diallyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and a zwitterionic copolymer (copolymer of acrylic acid, 3-Trimethylammonium propyl methacrylamide chloride and acrylamide, Merquat 2003), and the adsorption of such mixtures onto negatively charged surfaces. The analysis of the interactions occurring in solution between both polymers performed using dynamic light scattering (DLS), electrophoretic mobility and viscosity measurements, combined with the study of the deposition of the layers of mixtures containing different weight fractions of each polymer using ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) has shown that the interpolymer complexes formed in solution, and their composition, governs the deposition onto the solid surface and the tribological properties of the adsorbed layers as shown the Surface Force Apparatus (SFA) experiments, allowing for a control of the physico-chemical properties and structure of the layers. Furthermore, the use of Self Consistent Mean Fields Calculations (SCF) confirms the picture obtained from the experimental studies of the adsorbed layers, providing a prediction of the distribution of the polymer chains within the adsorbed layers. It is expected that this study can help on the understanding of the correlations existing between the behavior of future associations of innovative and eco-sustainable polymers and their adsorption processes onto solid surface.

Abstract:Chemical surfactants are omnipresent in consumers' products but they suffer from environmental concerns. For this reason, complete replacement of petrochemical surfactants by biosurfactants constitute a holy grail but this is far from occurring any soon. If the "biosurfactants revolution" has not occurred, yet, mainly due to the higher cost and lower availability of biosurfactants, another reason explains this fact: the poor knowledge of their properties in solution. This tutorial review aims at reviewing the self-assembly properties and phase behavior, experimental (sections 2.3 and 2.4) and from molecular modelling (section 5), in water of the most important microbial biosurfactants (sophorolipids, rhamnolipids, surfacting, cellobioselipids, glucolipids) as well as their major derivatives. A critical discussion of such properties in light of the well-known packing parameter of surfactants is also provided (section 2.5). The relationship between the nanoscale self-assembly and macroscopic materials properties, including hydrogelling, solid foaming, templating or encapsulation is specifically discussed (section 2.7). We also present their self-assembly and adsorption at flat and complex air/liquid (e.g., foams), air/solid (adhesion), liquid/solid (nanoparticles) and liquid/liquid (e.g., emulsions) interfaces (section 3). A critical discussion on the use of biosurfactants as capping agents for the development of stable nanoparticles is specifically provided (section 3.2.4). Finally, we discuss the major findings involving biosurfactants and macromolecules, including proteins, enzymes, polymers and polyelectrolytes.

Abstract:Polyelectrolytes are an important class of polymeric materials and are increasingly used in complex industrial formulations. A core use of these materials is in mixtures with surfactants, where a combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions drives unique solution behavior and structure formation. In this review, we apply a molecular level perspective to the broad literature on polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes, discussing explicitly the hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction contributions to polyelectrolyte surfactant complexes (PESCs), as well as the interplay between the two molecular interaction types. These interactions are sensitive to a variety of solution conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, mixing procedure, charge density, etc. and these parameters can readily be used to control the concentration at which structures form as well as the type of structure in the bulk solution.

Abstract:In this brief review, we have discussed various physical chemical principles that guide the functions of surfactants in solution. The surfactants have special functions at the air/liquid and air/solid interfaces forming Gibbs and Langmuir monomolecular films by way of spreading at the interfaces. Their self‐aggregation or micelle formation, a remarkable and useful phenomenon has been presented and elaborated. The application of fundamental physical chemistry principles for the understanding of the energetics of the micelle formation has been discussed. The involvement of surfactants in the formation of soft assembled (condensed) matters namely, vesicles, emulsions, foams, reverse micelles (or, microemulsions), gels, and so forth has been presented. The uniqueness of the "critical micelle concentration" (CMC), and its determination have been briefly presented. Applications of surfactants are numerous. We have briefly cited several applications namely, nano‐material synthesis, detergency, agrochemical formulations, drug delivery, retardation of water evaporation, and so forth. A short account of bio‐related surfactants namely, lung surfactants, bile salts, plant‐and microbe‐generated bio‐surfactants, and their utilities have been also presented.

Abstract:The interaction between diblock copolymer with ionic surfactants in aqueous solution were studied employing surface tensiometery, electrical conductivity, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic laser light scattering at 303 K. Surface tension measurements were used to determine critical micelle concentration (CMC) and, thereby, its free energy of micellization (ΔGm), free energy of adsorption (ΔGads), surface excess concentration (Γ), and minimum area per molecule (A). The negative values of (ΔGm) both in case of SDS and CTAB confirmed the spontaneity of the processes. Conductivity measurements were used to determine critical micelle concentration (CMC), critical aggregation concentration (CAC), polymer saturation point (PSP), degree of ionization (α), and counterion binding (β). Addition of polymers could effectively reduce the CMC value of surfactants and, thus increase the detergency. Dynamic light scattering experiments were performed to check the changes in physiochemical properties of the block copolymer micelles take place due to the interactions of diblock copolymer with ionic surfactants. The ratio of (I1/I3) indicates the polarity of the pyrene micro environment and confirms the detection of micelle as well as polymer-surfactant interactions. Aggregation number (N), number of binding sites (n), and free energy of binding (ΔGb) for pure surfactants as well as for polymer-surfactant mixed micellar systems were determined by fluorescence quenching method.

Abstract:Nanostructures of diverse chemical nature are used as biomarkers, therapeutics, catalysts, and structural reinforcements. The decoration with surfactants has a long history and is essential to introduce specific functions. The definition of surfactants in this review is very broad, following its lexical meaning “surface active agents”, and therefore includes traditional alkyl modifiers, biological ligands, polymers, and other surface active molecules. The review systematically covers covalent and non-covalent interactions of such surfactants with various types of nanomaterials, including metals, oxides, layered materials, and polymers as well as their applications. The major themes are (i) molecular recognition and noncovalent assembly mechanisms of surfactants on the nanoparticle and nanocrystal surfaces, (ii) covalent grafting techniques and multi-step surface modification, (iii) dispersion properties and surface reactions, (iv) the use of surfactants to influence crystal growth, as well as (v) the incorporation of biorecognition and other material-targeting functionality. For the diverse materials classes, similarities and differences in surfactant assembly, function, as well as materials performance in specific applications are described in a comparative way. Major factors that lead to differentiation are the surface energy, surface chemistry and pH sensitivity, as well as the degree of surface regularity and defects in the nanoparticle cores and in the surfactant shell. The review covers a broad range of surface modifications and applications in biological recognition and therapeutics, sensors, nanomaterials for catalysis, energy conversion and storage, the dispersion properties of nanoparticles in structural composites and cement, as well as purification systems and classical detergents. Design principles for surfactants to optimize the performance of specific nanostructures are discussed. The review concludes with challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Chain-like macromolecules (polymers) show characteristic adsorption properties due to their flexibility and internal degrees of freedom, when attracted to surfaces and interfaces. In this review we discuss concepts and features that are relevant to the adsorption of neutral and charged polymers at equilibrium, including the type of polymer/surface interaction, the solvent quality, the characteristics of the surface, and the polymer structure. We pay special attention to the case of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) that have a special importance due to their water solubility. We present a summary of recent progress in this rapidly evolving field. Because many experimental studies are performed with rather stiff biopolymers, we discuss in detail the case of semi-flexible polymers in addition to flexible ones. We first review the behavior of neutral and charged chains in solution. Then, the adsorption of a single polymer chain is considered. Next, the adsorption and depletion processes in the many-chain case are reviewed. Profiles, changes in the surface tension and polymer surface excess are presented. Mean-field and corrections due to fluctuations and lateral correlations are discussed. The force of interaction between two adsorbed layers, which is important in understanding colloidal stability, is characterized. The behavior of grafted polymers is also reviewed, both for neutral and charged polymer brushes.

Reconfiguration and Reorganization of Bottlebrush Polymer Surfactants

Abstract:Bottlebrush random copolymers (BRCPs), having randomly distributed hydrophilic and hydrophobic side chains, are shown to reconfigure into hydrophilic-rich and hydrophobic-rich conformations at liquid-liquid interfaces to reduce interfacial energy. Both the degree of polymerization (NBB ) and extent of grafting in these BRCPs were found to impact surface coverage and assembly kinetics. The time-dependence of the interfacial tension is described as the sum of two exponential relaxation functions characterizing BRCP diffusion, interfacial adsorption, and reorganization. Interfacial tension (γ) and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) results showed that higher molecular weight BRCPs require longer time to adsorb to the water-oil interface, but less time for interfacial reorganization. Overall, this work describes fundamental principles of BRCP assembly at liquid-liquid interfaces, with implications pertaining to polymer design with enhanced understanding of emulsification, adhesion, and related properties in fluids and at interfaces.

Abstract:Microbial biosurfactants are an attractive and promising class of molecules with the potential to replace oil-derived surfactants for the formulation of ecofriendly and biocompatible products. In this review, we discuss literature findings, mostly reported in the last decade, on the self-assembly of the four main classes of microbial biosurfactants, i.e., rhamnolipids, mannosylerythritol lipids, sophorolipids, and surfactin. All of them present composite molecular structures, characterized by different functional groups and ionisable moieties, and a high conformational flexibility. Where possible, we discuss the formation of different aggregate morphologies in terms of biosurfactant molecular structure and variation of environmental parameters. We highlight how the biosurfactant self-assembly is regulated by a complex interplay between various intermolecular interactions, including H-bonds and steric constraints, besides electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. For this reason, we show that common theoretical approaches to amphiphile self-assembly, such as the critical packing parameter, have limitations in rationalizing and predicting biosurfactant aggregation behaviour.

Abstract:Background: Drugs can represent a multitude of compounds from proteins and peptides, such as growth hormones and insulin and on to simple organic molecules such as flurbiprofen, ibuprofen and lidocaine. Given the chemical nature of these compounds two features are always present. A portion or portions of the molecule that has little affinity for apolar surfaces and media and on the contrary a series of part or one large part that has considerable affinity for hydrophilic, polar or charged media and surfaces. A series of techniques are routinely used to probe the molecular interactions that can arise between components, such as the drug, a range of surface- active excipients and flavor compounds, for example terpenoids and the solvent or dispersion medium. Results: Fifty-eight papers were included in the review, a large number (16) being of theoretical nature and an equally large number (14) directly pertaining to medicine and pharmacy; alongside experimental data and phenomenological modelling. The review therefore simultaneously represents an amalgam of review article and research paper with routinely used or established (10) and well-reported methodologies (also included in the citations within the review). Experimental data included from various sources as diverse as foam micro-conductivity, interferometric measurements of surface adsorbates and laser fluorescence spectroscopy (FRAP) are used to indicate the complexity and utility of foams and surface soft matter structures for a range of purposes but specifically, here for encapsulation and incorporation of therapeutics actives (pharmaceutical molecules, vaccines and excipients used in medicaments). Techniques such as interfacial tensiometry, interfacial rheology (viscosity, elasticity and visco-elasticity) and nanoparticle particle size (hydrodynamic diameter) and charge measurements (zeta potential), in addition to atomic force and scanning electron microscopy have proven to be very useful in understanding how such elemental components combine, link or replace one another (competitive displacement). They have also proven to be both beneficial and worthwhile in the sense of quantifying the unseen actions and interplay of adsorbed molecules and the macroscopic effects, such as froth formation, creaming or sedimentation that can occur as a result of these interactions. Conclusion: The disclosures and evaluations presented in this review confirm the importance of a theoretical understanding of a complex model of the molecular interactions, network and present a framework for the understanding of really very complex physical forms. Future therapeutic developers rely on an understanding of such complexity to garner a route to a more successful administration and formulation of a new generation of therapeutic delivery systems for use in medicine.

Abstract:Interfacial polymerization is one of the most important methods to fabricate polymer particles and membranes. As compared to bulk polymerization, interfacial polymerization is a type of step-growth polymerization that takes place at the interface of two immiscible phases, endowing the polymer materials with unique topological and chemical properties, such as anisotropic shapes, hollow structures or alternative surface chemistry. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in interfacial polymerization, generally based on the fabrication method and application field. First, two theory models of interfacial polymerization based on membrane and particles have been introduced. Second, five typical polymerization systems, i.e. liquid/monomer–solid (Lm–S), liquid/monomer–liquid (Lm–L), liquid/monomer–liquid/monomer (Lm–Lm), liquid/monomer-in-liquid (Lm-in-L), and liquid/monomer-in-liquid/monomer (Lm-in-Lm) systems, based on liquid–solid, liquid–liquid, and liquid-in-liquid emulsion interfaces, used in interfacial polymerization have been summarized. Then, three practical applications of synthetic materials, i.e. in electronic devices, separation, and cargo loading, prepared by interfacial polymerization have been shown. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in interfacial polymerization have also been proposed and discussed.

Abstract:This chapter deals with various aspects related to the adsorption of long chain-like macromolecules (polymers) onto solid surfaces. Physical aspects of the adsorption mechanism are elaborated mainly at thermodynamical equilibrium. The basic features needed in modeling of this adsorption are discussed. We first discuss the adsorption of a single and long polymer chain to the surface. The surface interaction is modeled by a potential well with a long-ranged attractive tail. A simple mean-field theory description is presented and the concept of polymer "blobs" is used to describe the conformation of the chain at the surface. The thickness of the adsorbed layer depends on several polymer and surface parameters. Fluctuation corrections to mean-field theory are also discussed. We then review adsorption as well as depletion processes in the many-chain case. Profiles, changes in the surface tension and polymer surface excess are calculated within mean-field theory. Corrections due to fluctuations in good solvent are taken into account using scaling concepts. The proximal exponent is introduced in analogy to surface critical phenomena. The interaction between two surfaces with adsorbed polymer layers is discussed, and various cases leading to attractive and repulsive interactions are mentioned. Polyelectrolytes are of practical importance due to their water solubility; we give a short summary of recent progress in this rapidly evolving field. The behavior of grafted polymers, i.e., polymers which are anchored with one end to a solid substrate is also reviewed.
