Abstract:As the core material of capacitors,dielectrics with high energy storage capacity have extremely important application in advanced equipment of smart grid and high-energy weapons.In order to improve the energy density of polymer dielectrics,composite technology was usually used to fabricate polymer-based nanocomposite dielectrics.We introduced the basic theory and structure model of several composites,and summarized recent research achievements from three key factors,including dielectric constant,electrical breakdown strength,and energy loss.Moreover,we put forward discussions and prospection on the basis of above scientific issues.

Abstract:Polymer dielectrics are the key component in film capacitors, which are one of the most fundamental elements in modern electronics and power systems [1–3]. Film capacitors are capable of storing energy when voltage is applied, in the form of electric charges separated by a dielectric material sandwiched by a pair of metal electrodes. Film capacitors possess the advantages of high breakdown strength, low power loss and processing flexibility compared with their counterparts in competition such as electrolytic capacitors and ceramic capacitors [4], meaning they can sustain high voltage, have great efficiency in electrical energy storage and can be manufactured in low-cost and efficient methods. Moreover, the unique self-clearing (sometimes referred to as self-healing) characteristic of polymer dielectrics ensures reliable operation of film capacitors [5], which is of paramount significance since capacitors storing a large amount of electrical energy can explode when catastrophic failure occurs. To be specific, the self-clearing is a process that when localized breakdown occurs at a spot of metallized film capacitors (i.e., a film capacitor using dielectric polymer films with metallic electrodes deposited on the surface [5], [6]), the energy released in the breakdown process can "clear" the breakdown-site, forming an open circuit. This process protects the capacitor from catastrophic failure (Figure 1) [7]. Serving as a device for charge storage and control, film capacitors are commonly used in many types of circuits such as snubbers, phase shifters, filters and AC/DC converters/inverters. In particular, film capacitors are capable of releasing the stored energy in an extremely short period of time to supply a high power density [8–10], which is desirable for the pulsed power application [1]. However, sizeable energy storage has not yet been achievable with film capacitors due to the limited v-lumetric energy density (usually measured in Joule per cubic centimeter at the material level). This shortcoming has caused a major issue in the electrical apparatus and electrified systems where capacitors constitute a large volume and weight fraction, i.e., a bulky, and sometimes even cumbersome size. For instance, in the 800 kV voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current transmission system, each converter tower has a volume of approximately 480 m3, where capacitors are ∼60% of the converter weight, and ∼50% of the volume.

Abstract:Electrostatic capacitors with extremely fast discharge speed and ultra-high power density, are an important class of energy storage element in advanced electrical and electronic systems. Polymer dielectrics are widely employed as capacitor dielectric materials because of their high breakdown strength, the ability to self-heal, low loss and low cost. However, polymer dielectrics usually show low energy density and poor thermal stability, which restrict their applications in high power electronics and compact power modules. In order to improve the energy density and temperature capability of polymer dielectrics, we have carried out a series of study. This review focuses on our recent progress in developing high-performance polymer-based dielectric materials and in understanding the corresponding dielectric phenomena. The main content includes the synthesis and characterization of PVDF-based ferroelectric polymers, copolymers and nanocomposites, and polymer-based high temperature dielectrics, as well as the investigation of interfacial property in the polymer matrix/inorganic nanoparticle composite system. At the end of this review, we summarize the existing challenges and propose the future directions in the field of polymer-based capacitor dielectrics.

Abstract:The uprising demands for electrical power and electrification requires advanced dielectric functionalities including high capacitance density, high energy density, high current handling capability, high voltage, high temperature, high thermal conductivity, light weight, and environmental reliability. Nanodielectric engineering emerges and attracts extensive efforts from many countries as a result. Unlike prior reviews focusing on lab scale nanocomposite study, this review focuses on recent innovations in polymer‐based nanodielectric design on a large scale and their film scale‐up efforts for advanced capacitors. The unconventional polymer‐nanofiller engineering and their process in the last two decades are discussed. The nanofunctionalized polymers on a molecular level for high dielectric constants and high dielectric strength are briefly described. The challenge associated with film scale‐up and retention of nanodielectric properties are then pointed out to be crucial toward a transfer of dielectric and capacitor technology. Several important attempts at scaling up dielectric films and capacitors recently supported by the US government and industry are reviewed. An alternative strategic approach to achieving high performance polymer films is introduced by leveraging 2D surface coating on commercially mature large‐scale polymer films. Future pathways for high quality scalable dielectric films exhibiting desirable dielectric properties and feasibility for capacitor manufacturing are suggested. The extensive exploration efforts towards electrically insulating dielectric materials and their structure–process relationship are reviewed. Several polymers and nanodielectric composites have impressed technologists over the past 15 years. Challenges in their conversion to film scale‐up and capacitors are tangible. Some high temperature dielectric film processes show good feasibility of dielectric film scale‐up.

Abstract:High energy density dielectric materials are desirable for capacitors and other energy storage systems. Two approaches were developed to achieve high electric energy density: explore high dielectric constant (K) materials and improve high operation electric field. Relaxor ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based copolymers P(VDF-HFP), P(VDF-CTFE) and terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) have been proven to possess high electric energy density. An energy density of over 25 J/cm(3) has been achieved in PVDF-based polymers, which represents the state of art in high energy density polymers. Aromatic polyurea thin films were developed through vapor phase deposition, exhibiting relatively high dielectric constant, low loss, high breakdown field (>800 MV/m) and consequently high energy density (>12 J/cm(3)). Its thermal stability up to 200 degrees C and high charge-discharge efficiency (>90%) make it attractive for high temperature capacitors. Investigation through SEM, AFM and other experiments indicated unbalanced aromatic polyurea could exhibit apparent high-K (similar to 15) due to the non-uniformity of film thickness and surface morphology. This article reviews the recent development of these high performance polymers.

Abstract:Materials exhibiting high energy/power density are currently needed to meet the growing demand of portable electronics, electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage devices. The highest energy densities are achieved for fuel cells, batteries, and supercapacitors, but conventional dielectric capacitors are receiving increased attention for pulsed power applications due to their high power density and their fast charge-discharge speed. The key to high energy density in dielectric capacitors is a large maximum but small remanent (zero in the case of linear dielectrics) polarization and a high electric breakdown strength. Polymer dielectric capacitors offer high power/energy density for applications at room temperature, but above 100 °C they are unreliable and suffer from dielectric breakdown. For high-temperature applications, therefore, dielectric ceramics are the only feasible alternative. Lead-based ceramics such as La-doped lead zirconate titanate exhibit good energy storage properties, but their toxicity raises concern over their use in consumer applications, where capacitors are exclusively lead free. Lead-free compositions with superior power density are thus required. In this paper, we introduce the fundamental principles of energy storage in dielectrics. We discuss key factors to improve energy storage properties such as the control of local structure, phase assemblage, dielectric layer thickness, microstructure, conductivity, and electrical homogeneity through the choice of base systems, dopants, and alloying additions, followed by a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art. Finally, we comment on the future requirements for new materials in high power/energy density capacitor applications.

Abstract:Dielectric capacitors are critical components in electronics and energy storage devices. The polymer based dielectric capacitors have advantages of flexibility, fast charge and discharge, low loss, and graceful failure. Elevating the use of polymeric dielectric capacitors for advanced energy applications such as electric vehicles (EVs) however requires significant enhancement of their energy densities. Here, we report a polymer thin film heterostructure based capacitor of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) with stratified 2D nanofillers (Mica or h-BN nanosheets) (PVDF/PMMA-2D fillers/PVDF), that shows enhanced permittivity, high dielectric strength and an ultra-high energy density of 75 J/cm3 with efficiency over 79%. Density functional theory calculations verify the observed permittivity enhancement. This approach of using oriented 2D nanofillers based polymer heterostructure composites is expected to be universal for designing high energy density thin film polymeric dielectric capacitors for myriads of applications.

Abstract:The continuous miniaturization of electronic devices and electric equipment requires high energy-storable dielectric capacitors. Therefore, seeking dielectric materials with high power density and high energy density becomes more urgent for ensuring their reliability. However, the contradiction between the increase in the dielectric constant and breakdown strength severely limits the sustainable increase in the energy density of polymer dielectrics. Here, recent advances in high dielectric and energy storage polymer dielectrics will be introduced. Polymer structure is an important factor in determining dielectric properties and energy storage characteristics of polymers, while the relationship between them is still unclear, which hinders the design of high energy-storable polymers. Our emphasis will be given to how to tailor the polymer structures for high dielectric and energy-storable polymer dielectrics. The effect of the polymer structures on the polarization and charge transport characteristics are also carefully discussed for further understanding the structure-property relationship. Finally, the follow-up research is briefly introduced. We intend that this work will help academics and industry toward high energy-storable polymer capacitors.

Abstract:Dielectric polymers are critical to meet the increasing demands for high-energy-density capacitors operating in harsh environments, such as aerospace power conditioning, underground oil and gas exploration, electrified transportation, and pulse power systems. In this perspective article, we present an overview of the recent progress in the field of polymer dielectrics for high temperature capacitive energy storage applications. Particular attention is placed on the underlying physical mechanisms of the rational design and the material structure–dielectric property–capacitive performance relationship. The scientific and technological challenges that remain to be addressed and the opportunities for future research are also presented.

Abstract:Polymer-based composites are highly regarded as favorable candidate materials for dielectrics in high-energy-density capacitors, owing to their exceptional flexibility and fast charge-discharge capabilities. Recently, multilayer-structured polymer composites have gained significant attention as a promising solution for energy storage and dielectric applications, offering a combination of high energy density and low dielectric loss. These polymer multilayer films, comprising two or more layers synthesized through specific fabrication processes, have presented extensive uses in various applications, including packaging and optical materials, such as oxygen barrier, holographic anti-counterfeiting, and optical sensing, due to their versatile and tunable functionalities. The distinctive chemical composition and structural design of these layers, whether symmetrically or gradient distributed, endow these dielectric composites with superior integrated electric properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview of fabrication methods and strategies employed in the latest advancements in dielectric multilayer-structured polymers for energy storage applications. It delves into the design and manufacturing techniques of advanced multilayer composites, highlighting the diverse strategies utilized to enhance energy performance, such as polarization manipulation, electric field distribution control, interfacial modification, and geometric confinement of interfaces within both organic and organic/inorganic multilayer-structured composites. Lastly, this review addresses the current challenges and future prospects in the development of multilayer composites with enhanced energy storage performance.

Abstract:Film capacitors with high energy storage are becoming particularly important with the development of advanced electronic and electrical power systems. Polymer-based materials have stood out from other materials and have become the main dielectrics in film capacitors because of their flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and tailorable functional properties. A core issue for achieving films with high performance is to process a material with high dielectric permittivity and breakdown strength but low dielectric loss. Nanocomposites and all-polymer dielectrics are two promising avenues to address this issue. Thus, in this work, the advances of the past decade are highlighted to reflect the latest developments in polymer-based film dielectrics. The key factors of dielectric properties, including polarization mechanisms, dielectric breakdown strength, filler–matrix interface, and hierarchical structures are discussed in detail. A comprehensive understanding of the fabrication of polymer-based materials with special constituents, molecular segments, and microstructures will provide guidance to engineers on the fabrication of polymer-based materials with high performance.

Abstract:The development of high-energy-density electrostatic capacitors is critical to addressing the growing electricity need. Currently, the widely studied dielectric materials are polymer nanocomposites incorporated with high-dielectric-constant nanoparticles. However, the introduction of high-dielectric-constant nanoparticles can cause local electric field distortion and high leakage current, which limits the improvement in energy density. In this work, on the basis of conventional polymer nanocomposites containing high-dielectric-constant nanoparticles, oriented boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are introduced as an extra filler phase. By changing the volume ratios of barium titanate (BT) and BNNSs, the dielectric property of polymer nanocomposites is adjusted, and thus the capacitive energy storage performance is optimized. Experimental results prove that the oriented BNNSs can suppress the propagation of charge carriers and decrease the conduction loss. Using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) as the polymer matrix, the P(VDF-HFP)/BNNS/BT nanocomposite has a higher discharged energy density compared with the conventional nanocomposite with the freely dispersed BT nanoparticles.

Abstract:Polymeric dielectrics have attracted intensive attention worldwide because of their huge potential for advanced energy storage capacitors. Thus far, various effective strategies have been developed to improve the inherent low energy densities of polymer dielectrics. However, enhanced energy density is always accompanied by suppressed discharge efficiency, which is detrimental to practical applications and deserves considerable concern. Targeting at achieving simultaneous high energy density and high discharge efficiency, the unique design of asymmetric all-polymer trilayer composite consisting of a transition layer sandwiched by a linear dielectric layer and a nonlinear dielectric layer is herein reported. It is demonstrated that the nonlinear dielectric layer offers high energy density, while the linear dielectric layer provides high discharge efficiency. Especially, the transition layer can effectively homogenize the electric field distribution, resulting in greatly elevated breakdown strength and improved energy density. In particular, a high efficiency of 89.9% along with a high energy density of 12.15 J cm−3 are concurrently obtained. The asymmetric trilayer all-polymer design strategy represents a new way to achieve high-performance dielectric energy storage materials.

Abstract:Many applications, such as hybrid vehicles, pulsed power generators, and power factor correction, require capacitors with high energy density to reduce the size or weight of the related systems. For these applications, dielectric film capacitors are often used because of their fast discharge speed and high power density. The energy density of commercial available film capacitors is relatively low and cannot meet the demands for those applications. In the past decade, different polymer-based dielectric materials have been intensively investigated to improve the energy density of the materials. Here, the progress in developing high energy density polymer-based dielectric materials is reviewed, and strategies to improve the energy density of dielectric polymers are summarized and discussed. Because polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based polymers have relatively high dielectric properties and have been intensively studied for the energy storage applications, the discussion focuses mainly on PVDF-based polymers and composites. An outlook for the future directions and problems that will be tackled to further improve the energy density of dielectrics is also provided.

Abstract:Polymer-based composite dielectric materials with high energy density have potential application in the capacitor field,and many researches focus on ferroelectric materials due to their high permittivity.We discussed the energy storage theory,electric polarization characteristics,charge-discharge efficiency of ferroelectric polymer-based nanocomposite dielectrics that are closely related with energy density,analyzed the energy storage mechanism,and proposed the development prospection.Moreover,we further investigated the main fabrication strategies including surface modifications of nanofillers,ferroelectric polymer-based composites of multi-phase blends,managements of multi-layer structure,the resultant promoted dielectric properties,as well as high energy density.

Abstract:There is an urgent need to develop advanced energy storage materials to meet the ever-increasing demands of modern electronics and electrical power systems. Polymer-based dielectric materials are one of the most promising energy materials due to their unique combination of high breakdown strength, low dielectric loss, light weight and ultrahigh power density. However, their energy densities are severely limited by their low dielectric constants (K) and thus fall short of the demands of compact and efficient energy storage devices. Remarkable efforts have been performed to improve K, and consequently, energy densities of polymers, e.g. introducing high-K inorganic fillers into the polymer matrix to form polymer composites. However, a general drawback is that the increased K is usually achieved at the cost of substantially decreased breakdown strength, thus leading to a moderate improvement of energy density. More recently, the polymer dielectrics with optimized hierarchically layered structures has become an emerging approach to resolve the existing paradox between high K and high breakdown strength in single-layered composite films, which resulted in substantial improvement in their capacitive energy storage performance. It is demonstrated that the electric field distribution, breakdown strength and capacitive performance can be readily adjusted by systematically varying the interfaces, chemical structures and ratios of the constituent layers. This review, for the first time, outlines the contemporary models and theories, and summarizes the research advances of multilayered hierarchical polymer composites (MHPCs), including inorganic particle/ organic MHPCs and all-organic layered films in the field of high-energy-density capacitors. The efficient strategies for improving the energy storage performance of MHPCs have been highlighted. To conclude, the remaining challenges and the promising opportunities for the development of MHPCs for capacitive energy storage applications are presented.

Abstract:High-capacity or high-power-density capacitors are being actively investigated for portable electronics, electric vehicles, and electric power systems. The dielectric nanocomposite with a small loading of carboxylic polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoparticles in poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [ P(VDF-CTFE)] matrix, followed by chemical crosslinking has been described. Combination of these two methods significantly improved the capacity of electric energy storage at low electric field. Specially, the nanocomposite with 2 wt % nanoparticles and 15 wt % crosslinking agent achieved a dielectric constant of 17.2 and a discharged energy density of 17.5 J/cm(3) (4.9 Wh/L) at an electric field as high as 324 MV/m, while corresponding values for pristine P(VDF-CTFE) are 9.6 and 13.3 J/cm(3) (3.7 Wh/L), respectively. Fundamental physics underlying the enhancement in the performance of the nanocomposites with respect to P(VDF-CTFE) is illustrated by solidstate F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance of direct excitation or F-19{H-1} cross polarization. It revealed different dynamics behavior between crystalline/amorphous regions, and PS-COOH nanoparticles favored the formation of polar c-form crystals. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies revealed the contribution of the interface to the extraordinary storage of electric energies in the nanocomposites. This approach provided a facile and straightforward way to design or understand PVDF-based polymers for their practical applications in high-energy-density capacitors.
