Abstract:This paper focuses on the design of hardware framework about DSP-based embedded License Plate Detection system including the detailed technology of circuit design among image sensor, DSP, Flash, SDRAM, timer and resetting. The program on license plate detection has been tested on the designed board, it run all right with natural light condition, and the location of license plate is accurate. The size and cost of the board are small, but it is fast and highly reliable.

Abstract:Under the condition of the complicated backgrounds of high resolution digital vehicle images and the different illumination conditions,a layered algorithm based on multi-features including texture,edge and color features of the vehicle license plate is proposed.This algorithm consists of three steps: color image preprocessing,license plate raw locating,and license plate precise locating.The color image preprocessing turns the colorized image into a gray image.After applying this algorithm to hundreds of images of vehicle taken by a colorized digital acquisition camera device on the real highway,our result indicates that this algorithm has a fast,robust and reliable performance.

Abstract:A novel algorithm for the license plate attribute identification is presented(attribute means one-row or two-row characters that license plate really has in this paper).The proposed approach provides a solution to the traditional vehicle license plate recognition system to differentiate the existing license plates with different style based on their dissimilarities in size,character number and alignment fashion.It overcomes the defects caused by the traditional methods based on pixels projection.What it remarkably differs from the traditional methods is the application of image pruning and the calculation of maximum character pixels distance,which increases the identification rate to an extent.The approach takes the pixels' spatial distribution into account.There are four steps to perform the attribute identification,that is,object region extraction,margin detection,maximum character pixels distance calculation and hierarchical-based distributed fusion.Experimental results demonstrate the method's accuracy,feasibility and robustness.It would be a potentially significant contribution to the active area of license plate recognition system.

Abstract:The location of the vehicle license plate is one of the important steps of the recognition of the vehicle license plate. Under the condition of the complicated backgrounds of the vehicle images and the different illumination conditions, a layered location algorithm for vehicle license plate is proposed. In the algorithm the layered gradation segmentation is adopted and the analysis range is diminished gradually in the image. The right-and-left and down-and-left boundaries of plate region candidates are located and a few plate region candidates could be obtained. And then the plate region will be selected from them. So the exact location of the vehicle license plate is carried out. The experimental results show that the algorithm is excellent in the accuracy with a rapid speed and is great in the robustness.

Abstract:For many algorithms used in the license plate recognition field , there are two categories of license plate:dark characters on the light background and light characters on the dark background .The main difference of them are the binarization results , and it will lead to different results of character segmentation and recognition . Therefore, the binarization type judgment is essential and important work for the license plate recognition .A meth-od based on the histograms of the stroke width transform was propose for the problem .The proposed method judges the license plate type via comparing the maximization of the histograms of the stroke width transform of normal and inverted images.Besides, the stroke width can also be estimated by the judgment results , and it can be used for se-lecting the neighborhood window size of local binarization algorithms .The experimental results show that the pro-posed method is superior to others by using multi-style license plates in the United States , but the time complexity is high .

Abstract:This paper gives a practical schema for using DSP boards to construct Vehicle License Plate Recognition (VLPR) modules that could be embedded in any Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Using DSP can avoid the heavy investment in dedicated VLPR system and improve the computational power compared to PC software environment. Low cost, high computational power, and high flexibility of DSP provide the License Plate Recognition System (LPRS) an excellent cost-effective solution to execute the major part of the recognition tasks. This paper describes a successful implementation of VLPR system based on Texas Instruments (TI)’s TMS320DM642. The DSP board acquires video (which could be output to a monitor for surveillance) from a camera, captures images from the video, locates and recognizes the license plates in images, and then sends the recognized results and related images after compression to a host PC through the network. Finally, the overall software is optimized according to the features of DM642 chip. Experiments showed that the DSP VLPR system performs well on the local license plates, and that the processing speed and accuracy can meet the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:Character segmentation is an important step in License Plate Recognition (LPR) system. There are many difficulties in this step, such as the influence of image noise, plate frame, rivet, the space mark, and so on. This paper presents a new algorithm for character segmentation, using Hough transformation and the prior knowledge in horizontal and vertical segmentation respectively. Furthermore, a new object enhancement technique is used for image preprocessing. The experiment results show a good performance of this new segmentation algorithm.

Abstract:The car plate recognition system is an indispensable part of intelligent traffic system. In car plate recognition system, one of the most difficult problems is the feature and recognition of car plate Chinese character. The multiresolution property of wavelet is applied to extract car plate Chinese character feature extraction, and a method that directly extracts feature from gray scale image is proposed. The method firstly extracts two kinds of features: one is wavelet moments in different multiresolution, and the other is the zoning density of wavelet-decomposed image. Then, two kinds of features are combined and a feature selection algorithm based recognition rate is presented to choose better features. Finally, the selected features are as the input of BP neural network, which is adopted to recognize car plate Chinese character. As a result, the proposed method avoids the binary operation used in some traditional Chinese character feature extractions that will seriously destroy the Chinese character structure. Furthermore, the extracted features can describe the local and global property of the character. Compared with some other feature extraction methods, the proposed method can achieve better recognition performance.

Abstract:In the automatic license plate recognition field, to handle the license plates with complex backgrounds and shadows under a variety of lighting conditions is a challenging task. This paper presents an approach for license plate binarization, which is important in the character segmentation step. Firstly, we estimate the character width based on the run-length stroke width algorithm. Secondly, we apply a window, of which the length is about character width, for background estimation. Thirdly, the binarized foreground (character) layer is reconstructed by removing the backgrounds. Finally, the experimental results show the proposed method is more effective and robust than other seven methods. © 2013 Binary Information Press.
Analysis and Extraction of Structural Features of Alphabetic and Digital Characters on Vehicle License Plate

Abstract:In this paper the structural properties of alphabetic and digital characters on vehicle license plate are analyzed in detail and three types of feature are extracted for their recognition. These features include (a) global ones, i.e. closed curve in character, which can be used for character coarse classification; (b) minutiae, which are some key points in thinned image such as endings, bifurcations and crossings of strokes and can be used for character precise classification, (c) corners in strokes which can be used to discriminate similar characters. Algorithms for fast detection of closed curve based on theory of graph and minutiae and for corner finding based on external contour lines of binary image are also discussed. The recognition rate of alphabetic and digit character of the system based on these structural features is approximate to 96% and the time for feature extraction and character recognition is about 20ms/character. This shows that the proposed structural features have good discriminating power of similar characters and can be used for the fast classification and recognition of characters on vehicle license plate.
A Multi-Style License Plate Verification Method Based on Character Classification under Illumination Variances

Abstract:License plate verification is essential for locating the license plate region precisely in a vehicle image. Existing verification methods implemented after location are effective for the single-style license plates, but will not do well when distinguishing multi-style ones from complex backgrounds. We propose a method based on segmented character classification, combining Principal Component Analysis and Support Vector Machines, to deal with the verification of license plates with multi-style. Compared with previous methods, the segmented character regions can be analyzed more effectively, and the proposed method gets the high confidence level by calculating the classification result of the segmented characters but not the whole license plates. The experiments were done under complex illumination conditions, and the results show that the proposed method is effective for multi-style license plates for both fixed and moving camera systems.

Abstract:To locate the license plate exactly is a challenging task, especially for the license plates with complex backgrounds or shadows. Firstly, we use a multilevel local adaptive thresholding method instead of global thresholding methods to produce binary images under varying illuminations. Secondly, the connected contour analysis is applied to extract the main characters, and the false character contour regions are filtered out by the SVM classification method using PCA dimensionality reduction. Finally, we merge the remaining characters on the same line to extract candidate regions of the license plate. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves higher accuracy, more acceptable and precise results. By using the data sets of the license plates in the USA and Europe, the method is shown to be suitable for multi-style license plates.
License Plate Classification from a Binarization Perspective

Abstract:For binarized license plates, there are usually two categories: one is the white-character type, of which the character is white and the background is black. The other is the black-character type. For some linearization-based algorithms, such as character segmentation, we should apply suitable approach according to different linearization results. It is still a challenging task for multi-style license plates. In this paper we propose a stroke-width-transform-based method for this problem. Firstly, we calculate the stroke width transform by using the original grey image and the inverted one, respectively. Secondly, the histograms of the corresponding stroke width transform images are generated. Thirdly, the image, corresponding to the maximum value of the histograms, is selected. Finally, if the original image is selected, the license plate is the white-character type and vice versa. The experimental results show the proposed method is superior to others by using multi-style license plates in the United States, but the time complexity is high.
An Adaptive Algorithm for License Plate Orientation and Character Segmentation

Abstract:Based on the sharing features of a variety of license plates (LP), the vertical edge was first detected by sobel color edge detector. Then, some approaches were adopted to adaptively remove the invalid edge regarding the characteristics of edge grayscale jump and edge density, so that the regions having features of LP were preserved. Next, by edge density template matching and the mean and variance of grayscale jump points, the LP region was rapidly searched. Then, color-reversing judgment was conducted by color analysis, and binarization was done based on edge detection. Afterward, characters were segmented by means of mathematical morphology (MM) and connected components analysis. With an abundant samples verified in dark hours and daytime under real conditions, the experiment indicates that it is feasible to adopt this algorithm in license plate recognition system(LPRS) to achieve accuracy and adaptability.

Abstract:With the development of Intelligent Transportation System(ITS),License Plate Recognition(LPR)is a key point of it.The license plate recognition consists of 3 parts:license plate location,character segmentation and character recognition.As plate location is the basement of characters cut and recognition,it plays an important role in the License Plate Recognition(LPR).A method for license plate location is proposed based on the wavelet and mathematical morphology.Firstly,the candidate regions is detected by the horizontal projection of LH image,then vertical projection is used to discard pseudo-regions.Finally,the plate is located by the mathematical morphology.The experiment result shows the proposed method is effective in the case of sophisticated background.

Abstract:Developing an automatic license plate recognition system that can cope with multiple factors is challenging and interesting in the current scenario. In this paper, we introduce a new concept called partial character reconstruction to segment characters of license plates to enhance the performance of license plate recognition systems. Partial character reconstruction is proposed based on the characteristics of stroke width in the Laplacian and gradient domain in a novel way. This results in character components with incomplete shapes. The angular information of character components determined by PCA and the major axis are then studied by considering regular spacing between characters and aspect ratios of character components in a new way for segmenting characters. Next, the same stroke width properties are used for reconstructing the complete shape of each character in the gray domain rather than in the gradient domain, which helps in improving the recognition rate. Experimental results on benchmark license plate databases, namely, MIMOS, Medialab, UCSD data, Uninsbria data Challenged data, as well as video databases, namely, ICDAR 2015, YVT video, and natural scene data, namely, ICDAR 2013, ICDAR 2015, SVT, MSRA, show that the proposed technique is effective and useful. Abstract:A character segmentation method based on the separator symbol's frame of reference is proposed in this paper.At first,the separator symbol's region is figured out by using the uniqueness of separator symbol's region projection feature.Then,the characters' borders of pre-segmentation are constructed based on the separator symbol's region combines some prior knowledge of license plate format.After analyzing the projection feature on character area,each character can be segmented accurately.Experimental results show that this method can segment the license plate characters precisely and robustly.

Abstract:License-plate location and character segmentation are two key components of the automatic vehicle license recognition system. An edge-texture-color based algorithm to locate the plate region and a template matching based algorithm to segment characters are proposed. Using these algorithms and a character recognition kernel, an automatic vehicle license recognition system was finished. The performance of the system was investigated on many real car images with complex background captured under various illumination conditions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms have high accuracy and robustness.

Abstract:Character segmentation is the middle stage of the license plate recognition algorithm. The precision of the character segmentation is blocked by two factors. One is the character area always have errors for the reason of license plate location algorithm, which made the real margin of the license plate define impossible. The other is that the characters themselves are illegible, or the strokes are broken or conjoint, namely the image is degraded. So characters' borders are also very difficult to obtain. To solve these problems, a character segmentation method bases on the separator symbol's frame of reference is proposed in this paper. At first, figuring out the separator symbol's region by using the uniqueness of projection feature of separator symbol's region, then constructing the characters' borders of pre' segmentation based on the separator symbol's region combines some prior knowledge of license plate format. After analyzing the projection feature on character area, each character can be segmented accurately. Experiment results show that this method can segment license plate characters precisely and robustly.
