Abstract:Recent observation results show that sand ripples and dunes are movable like those on Earth under current Martian climate. And the aeolian process on Mars therefore is re-attracting the eyes of scientific researchers in different fields. In this paper, the spatial and temporal evolution of wind-blown sand on Mars is simulated by the large-eddy simulation method. The simulations are conducted under the conditions of both friction wind speed higher and lower than the “fluid threshold”, respectively. The fluid entrainment of the sand particles, the processes among saltation sand particles and sand bed, and the negative feedback of sand movement to flow field are considered. Our results show that the “overshoot” phenomenon also exists in the evolution of wind-blown sand on Mars both temporally and spatially; impact entrainment affects the sand transport rate on Mars when the wind speed is smaller or larger than the fluid threshold; and both the average saltation length and height are one order of magnitudes larger than those on Earth. Eventually, the formulas describing the sand transport rate, average saltation length and height on Mars are given, respectively.

Abstract:Aeolian sediment transport is observed to occur on Mars as well as other extraterrestrial environments, generating ripples and dunes as on Earth. The search for terrestrial analogs of planetary bedforms, as well as environmental simulation experiments able to reproduce their formation in planetary conditions, are powerful ways to question our understanding of geomorphological processes toward unusual environmental conditions. Here, we perform sediment transport laboratory experiments in a closed-circuit wind tunnel placed in a vacuum chamber and operated at extremely low pressures to show that Martian conditions belong to a previously unexplored saltation regime. The threshold wind speed required to initiate saltation is only quantitatively predicted by state-of-the art models up to a density ratio between grain and air of [Formula: see text] but unexpectedly falls to much lower values for higher density ratios. In contrast, impact ripples, whose emergence is continuously observed on the granular bed over the whole pressure range investigated, display a characteristic wavelength and propagation velocity essentially independent of pressure. A comparison of these findings with existing models suggests that sediment transport at low Reynolds number but high grain-to-fluid density ratio may be dominated by collective effects associated with grain inertia in the granular collisional layer.
A morphological insight into the Martian dune geomorphology

Abstract:Aeolian process is the most active and extensive contemporary geomorphological process on the Mars, bearing rich information on surface processes, environment and evolution history. High-resolution remote sensing images covering the whole planet are interpreted and processed by GIS software to analyze the morphological characteristics of the Martian dunes on global basis, and discuss their aeolian geomorphological implications. A tentative dune classification scheme is proposed for the Mars. Dunes types on the Mars mainly include sand sheet, dome dune, barchan, barchanoid ridge, transverse ridge, linear ridges, seif dune, raked linear dune, nail dune, square dune network, ladder-like dune network, scaled dune network, honeycomb dune network, star dune, and obstacle dune. It is suggested that the Mars shares similar dune types with the Earth to a large extent, but is dominated by simple dune types. Complex and compound dunes are rarely seen on the Mars so that the cumulative probability curves of dune morphological parameters are characterized by a single section. Barchans, barchanoid ridges and transverse ridges are the most popular, but linear dunes that account for about 50% on the Earth only have 10% on the Mars. The simplicity of dune geomorphology on the Mars is also manifested by the small patches of the dune fields the Martian dune-fields. The Martian dunes are generally smaller on the Mars, in contradiction with theoretical inferences that the scale of dunes increases the ratio of particle/air density. The morphological parameters of the Martian dunes are well correlated, similar to the Earth dunes, but the correlationship is different, implying the similar formation mechanism but different development conditions. It is also suggested that the Martian analogues of terrestrial aeolian landforms, such as those found on the Tibetan Plateau, are good examples to study the Martian aeolian geomorphology. The simplicity of dune geomorphology on the Mars probably suggests that dunes on the Mars are developed with insufficient sediment availability and short development history. Inactive recent exogenic processes are probably responsible for insufficient sediment availability on the Mars. Insufficient sediment availability would be an interesting topic for future research, which may have extensive earth science significances.
Fluvial Depositional Systems of the African Humid Period: An Analog for an Early, Wet Mars in the Eastern Sahara

Abstract:A widely hypothesized but complex transition from widespread fluvial activity to predominantly aeolian processes is inferred on Mars based on remote sensing data observations of ancient landforms. However, the lack of analysis of in situ martian fluvial deposits hinders our understanding of the flow regime nature and sustainability of the martian fluvial activity and the hunt for ancient life. Studying analogs from arid zones on Earth is fundamental to quantitatively understanding geomorphic processes and climate drivers that might have dominated during early Mars. Here we investigate the formation and preservation of fluvial depositional systems in the eastern Sahara, where the largest arid region on Earth hosts important repositories of past climatic changes. The fluvial systems are composed of well‐preserved single‐thread sinuous to branching ridges and fan‐shaped deposits interpreted as deltas. The systems' configuration and sedimentary content suggest that ephemeral rivers carved these landforms by sequential intermittent episodes of erosion and deposition active for 10s to 100s years over ∼10,000 years during the late Quaternary. Subsequently, these landforms were sculpted by a marginal role of rainfall and aeolian processes with minimum erosion rates of 1.1±0.2 mm/yr, supplying ∼96±24✕1010 m3 of disaggregated sediment to adjacent aeolian dunes. Our results imply that similar martian fluvial systems preserving single‐thread, short distance source‐to‐sink courses may have formed due to transient drainage networks active over short durations. Altogether, this study adds to the growing recognition of the complexity of interpreting climate history from orbital images of landforms.

Abstract:Aeolian sand transport frequently occurs on Mars despite wind speeds rarely exceeding predicted thresholds for motion. This dissonance is problematic for understanding aeolian processes and the resulting geomorphologic responses in contemporary and ancient atmospheres. To address the apparent discrepancy between speeds required to initiate sand motion and transport observed from orbital and in situ observations, we conducted a series of wind tunnel experiments at Martian atmospheric pressures and used buoyancy as the similitude parameter to simulate the force required to initiate particle motion on Mars. Shear velocities were derived from velocity profiles corresponding to the onset of sporadic transport, which can induce downwind cascading motion. Here, we find that threshold shear velocities are slower than previously thought by a factor of 1.6 to 2.5. Measured wind speeds on Mars exceed our observed thresholds, thus offering one mechanism behind the dissonance between observations of transport below previous thresholds of motion.

Rocket dust storms and detached dust layers in the Martian atmosphere

Abstract:Airborne dust is the main climatic agent in the Martian environment. Local dust storms play a key role in the dust cycle; yet their life cycle is poorly known. Here we use mesoscale modeling that includes the transport of radiatively active dust to predict the evolution of a local dust storm monitored by OMEGA on board Mars Express. We show that the evolution of this dust storm is governed by deep convective motions. The supply of convective energy is provided by the absorption of incoming sunlight by dust particles, rather than by latent heating as in moist convection on Earth. We propose to use the terminology "rocket dust storm", or conio-cumulonimbus, to describe those storms in which rapid and efficient vertical transport takes place, injecting dust particles at high altitudes in the Martian troposphere (30 to 50 km). Combined to horizontal transport by large-scale winds, rocket dust storms produce detached layers of dust reminiscent of those observed with Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Since nighttime sedimentation is less efficient than daytime convective transport, and the detached dust layers can convect during the daytime, these layers can be stable for several days. The peak activity of rocket dust storms is expected in low-latitude regions at clear seasons (late northern winter to late northern summer), which accounts for the high-altitude tropical dust maxima unveiled by Mars Climate Sounder. Dust-driven deep convection have strong implications for the Martian dust cycle, thermal structure, atmospheric dynamics, cloud microphysics, chemistry, and robotic and human exploration.

Martian landscapes of fluvial ridges carved from ancient sedimentary basin fill

Abstract:Large sedimentary basins contain archives of Earth history. It is unknown to what extent similar basins existed on Mars because there are few observations relating to the subsurface and it is difficult to identify buried deposits. Here, we used numerical simulations to show that landscapes of networks of topographic ridges that are abundant on the surface of Mars may represent erosional windows into thick, basin-filling river deposits that accumulated over long time spans. We used a numerical model to drive hillslope creep and differential erosion from the wind to simulate Mars-like exhumation processes acting on basin-filling fluvial strata, which we based on those buried in the Gulf of Mexico on Earth, as imaged using three-dimensional reflectance seismology. Simulations produced remarkably Martian landscapes in which the preferential erosion of mudstone relative to sandstone channel belts leads to the development of complex patterns of intersecting ridges. Our findings contrast to the existing view of ridged Martian landscapes as thin-skinned surface deposits preserving fluvial landscapes at a snapshot in time. Instead, the ridge cross-cutting patterns produced by the model reflect the exhumation of channel bodies at different stratigraphic levels, exposing basin strata accumulated over time scales of 500,000 years. Thus, we propose that fluvial ridges on Mars may expose an archive of long-lived aqueous processes.

Ripples, transverse aeolian ridges, and dark‐toned sand dunes on Mars: A case study in Terra Sabaea

Abstract:Ripples, Transverse Aeolian Ridges (TARs), and dark-toned sand sheets and dunes are common aeolian bedforms on the Martian surface. They are important for understanding the nature of present-day Martian sediments and regional aeolian processes. Here we present a case study investigation of ripples, TARs, a dark-toned sand sheet, and dunes in an unnamed—but well-covered by remote sensing datasets—crater in Terra Sabaea, Mars, to consider their nature and possible origin scenarios. Repeat high-spatial resolution images show only minor albedo changes among the dark-toned sand dunes but no obvious changes in the ripples and TARs. Visible and infrared spectra show that the megaripples and TARs are pyroxene-bearing, while the dark-toned sheet and dunes are olivine-bearing. Thousands of TARs are superimposed on the crater walls, and they have a similar composition as the bedrock exposed around the central pit, suggesting that some percentage of the sediment composing the TARs may be locally derived. Megaripples have a similar composition as TARs, suggesting they may share a similar origin. Dark-toned sand sheets and sand dunes show a different composition from the substrate of the crater, plus bedform orientations indicative of a dominant, north-northwest wind, indicating that some of these dark sands might have been blown in from outside of the crater. Alternatively, the sand in the megaripples, TARs, sand sheets, and dunes could share a common source, and some or even all of them could be recycled from the weathering and erosion of the sand-bearing clastic rocks exposed in the crater walls.
Unsteady Saltation on Mars

Abstract:Saltation is an important process on Mars, as it contributes to dust raising, bedform dynamics, and aeolian abrasion. Lander measurements and mesoscale meteorological models suggest that winds in the Martian atmosphere rarely exceed the fluid threshold value that is necessary to aerodynamically initiate saltation, a fact in stark contrast to the existence of dunes and ripples on the planet, many of which are in an active state of migration. In an attempt to reconcile these observations, we perform an unsteady simulation with a simple turbulence model to calculate the saltation transport rate. Sinusoidal wind variations are imposed on the saltation layer. The numerical simulations verify that gusty transport is one of the main manifestations of Martian sediment transport events. A formula for the saltation transport rate is reported, Q(m) similar to (u(*) - u(*it))(p), where u(*) and u(*it) are the friction velocity and impact threshold friction velocity. The power p varies in the range of 0.7-1.8 on Mars and similar to 1.5 on Earth, depending on the period and amplitude of the gusty inflow wind. Our results show that the law of Martian and terrestrial transport rate are not universal, and hence one should be cautious when trying to extrapolate existing terrestrial results to Mars. Saltation under Martian gravity and its influence on the global dust distribution

Abstract:Dust and sand motion are a common sight on Mars. Understanding the interaction of atmosphere and Martian soil is fundamental to describe the planet’s weather, climate and surface morphology. We set up a wind tunnel to study the lift of a mixture between very fine sand and dust in a Mars simulant soil. The experiments were carried out under Martian gravity in a parabolic flight. The reduced gravity was provided by a centrifuge under external microgravity. The onset of saltation was measured for a fluid threshold shear velocity of 0.82 ± 0.04 m/s. This is considerably lower than found under Earth gravity. In addition to a reduction in weight, this low threshold can be attributed to gravity dependent cohesive forces within the sand bed, which drop by 2/3 under Martian gravity. The new threshold for saltation leads to a simulation of the annual dust cycle with a Mars GCM that is in agreement with observations.

Hyperuniformity on Mars: Pebbles scattered on sand

Abstract:In Gale Crater near Mars' equator, dunes and ripples of sand stand out from the general orderless, rocky terrain. In addition, images from Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory rover, reveal more subtle orderly forms: widespread, meter-scale domains of evenly spaced, pebble-size rocks (termed clasts) on wind-blown sand in scattered locations. Here, we examine quantitatively several clast domains on both Mars and Earth, and compare their geometry with that of random points. The clast distributions are more orderly than expected by chance; they differ significantlty from those associated with uniform (Poisson) random processes. Moreover, they are hyperuniform, a self-organized state recently recognized in diverse active materials and biological systems but that appears novel for planetary surfaces. These patches are often surrounded by recent wind-borne ripples, suggesting an interplay between sand transport, ripple activity and clasts. Using numerical simulations, we show that clast displacements induced by gravity, combined with the evolution of the sand surface caused by aeolian sand transport and ripple migration, can produce realistic hyperuniform and random clast distributions, as well as distinct clast alignements. Our findings highlight the existence of easily overlooked disordered hyperuniform states on ground surfaces, suggesting novel self-organized states beyond distinct geometric patterns.

Widespread Megaripple Activity Across the North Polar Ergs of Mars

Abstract:The most expansive dune fields on Mars surround the northern polar cap where various aeolian bedform classes are modified by wind and ice. The morphology and dynamics of these ripples, intermediate-scale bedforms (termed megaripples and Transverse Aeolian Ridges [TARs]), and sand dunes reflect information regarding regional boundary conditions. We found that populations of polar megaripples and larger TARs are distinct in terms of their morphology, spatial distribution, and mobility. Whereas regionally restricted TARs appeared degraded and static in long-baseline observations, polar megaripples were not only widespread but migrating at relatively high rates (0.13 ± 0.03 m/Earth year) and possibly more active than other regions on Mars. This high level of activity is somewhat surprising since there is limited seasonality for aeolian transport due to surficial frost and ice during the latter half of the martian year. A comprehensive analysis of an Olympia Cavi dune field estimated that the advancement of megaripples, ripples, and dunes avalanches accounted for ~1%, ~10%, and ~100%, respectively, of the total aeolian system's sand fluxes. This included dark-toned ripples that migrated the average equivalent of 9.6 ± 6 m/yr over just 22 days in northern summer-unprecedented rates for Mars. While bedform transport rates are some of the highest yet reported on Mars, the sand flux contribution between the different bedforms does not substantially vary from equatorial sites with lower rates. Seasonal off-cap sublimation winds and summer-time polar storms are attributed as the cause for the elevated activity, rather than cryospheric processes.
Lift-off Parameters of Saltating Particles on Mars

Abstract:The aeolian events are frequent on Mars. However, we have very limited understanding of aeolian process, because we cannot conduct experiments, as we did on Earth, on martian surface directly right now. In this paper, we studied the lift-off parameters of saltating particles in wind-blown sand on Mars systematically through a numerical way. The main findings are shown as follows: (1) the lift-off speeds of martian particles increase linearly with wind shear velocities; (2) the lift-off speeds of particles on Mars have the same order of magnitude as but a little smaller than those on Earth at the same shear velocity; (3) the lift-off angles on Mars are almost equal to those on Earth and have weak dependence on shear velocities; (4) the lift-off parameters (both speeds and angles) are influenced by particle diameters. Abstract:Abstract Wind-blown sand self-organizes into bedforms that have now been identified on six different planetary bodies. These bedforms, including ripples and dunes, exhibit patterns that are diagnostic of surface-atmosphere interactions and can be used to interpret winds and sediment supply from satellite images of planetary surfaces. Patterns in dune and ripple fields change when one or more bedforms interact, for example, by linking, colliding, or merging with one another. When two bedforms interact, the cross-strata developed by the bedforms include a bounding surface where the two bedforms combined. These “interaction bounding surfaces” have been interpreted from ancient and modern strata in recent literature, but they have not yet been identified beyond Earth. On Mars, aeolian dunes and ripples form much as they do on Earth, but additional enigmatic bedform types are also present. Transverse aeolian ridges are straight-crested bedforms found abundantly on Mars, but with few analogs on Earth. Formation mechanisms for these enigmatic bedforms range from dune-like migration and construction to growth in place via wedge stacking or kinetic sieving. In this work, I studied exposed stoss-slope stratification on these enigmatic Martian bedforms to (1) identify the first in situ examples of interaction bounding surfaces captured visually, and (2) demonstrate that the transverse aeolian ridges must have been forward migrating.

Gravity‐Driven Differences in Fluvial Sediment Transport on Mars and Earth

Abstract:Abstract There is abundant evidence from fluvial landforms and deposits that Mars had rivers that actively transported sediment and shaped its surface. Sediment transport equations are playing a key role in quantifying river processes from these observations, which continue to increase in quality and quantity. In this study, we review sediment transport equations developed on Earth and isolate the effect of gravity for the case of an alluvial channel. We compare 33 formulas used to calculate the sediment transport rate, under transport‐limited conditions, for grain sizes that range from silt to boulders and a lognormal sediment distribution. Results indicate that for a given discharge, channel morphology and grain size, the lower gravity on Mars compared to Earth results in: (a) larger grains mobilized on Mars and transported in suspension, and (b) larger suspended sediment transport rates on Mars and therefore larger total transport rates. Importantly, the effect of gravity is different for bed load and suspended load, with nonlinearity at the bed load‐suspended load transition zone. Therefore, typical total‐load transport relations that do not distinguish between bedload and suspended load are not appropriate for other planets as they simplify the effect of gravity. Gravity‐driven differences in fluvial sediment transport should produce differences in sediment sorting, morphology and stratigraphy between Earth and Mars. Additionally, our results show how Earth‐derived fluvial sediment transport theory can be applied beyond Mars to other planets and moons.

Earth-like thermal and dynamical coupling processes in the Martian climate system

Abstract:The burst of Mars exploration in the past two decades has significantly improved our knowledge of the Martian atmosphere. A variety of complementary, multiannual observational records have revealed Earth-like cycling of dust and water through the Mars system, as well as hints of dynamical coupling between the lower, middle, and upper atmosphere involving deep convection, planetary waves, thermal tides, and gravity waves that can be analogous to, but sometimes very different from, coupling processes in the Earth's atmosphere. This review focuses on several essential coupling processes on Mars involving the dust/water cycling and wave activity: (1) interaction between the dust cycle, water cycle and wave activity in the lower atmosphere; (2) the global meridional circulation and middle atmospheric polar warmings; and (3) vertical coupling throughout the atmosphere during dusty/non-dusty conditions. Most of these processes have been studied with state-of-the-art numerical models validated with recent observations. In addition, we summarize several newly proposed hypotheses that potentially impact our understanding of major issues in planetary science such as atmospheric coupling, water escape, or mesospheric cloud formation. We find many similarities between wave-induced couplings on Earth and Mars and analogies between the Earth's water cycle and Mars's dust cycle, which provide insights into comparative studies of these two planets.

Abstract:European Space Agency's Mars Express (MEX) has been orbiting Mars for 20 years and its instruments have provided a plethora of observations of atmospheric dust and clouds. These observations have been analysed to produce many unique views of the processes leading to dust lifting and cloud formation, and a full picture of the climatologies of dust and clouds has emerged. Moreover, the orbit of MEX enables viewing the planet at many local times, giving a unique access to the diurnal variations of the atmosphere. This article provides an overview of the observations of dust and clouds on Mars by MEX, complemented by the Trace Gas Orbiter that has been accompanying MEX on orbit for some years.

Abstract:Global and mesoscale models represent the background (slowly varying) winds on Mars, but short timescale wind variability is not explicitly represented. The local wind erosion and dust deposition model can be useful for more accurate local wind friction, wind friction threshold, horizontal sand flux and vertical dust flux modeling on Mars. Such a model based on the model of Zender \cite{Zender} is proposed in this article. It includes different methods of threshold wind friction estimation and takes into account the influence of atmospheric electric fields on sand and dust elevation processes. The model parameterized for the Earth was tested on data acquired in Morocco field campaign 2013-2014 (Esposito et al.,) \cite{Esposito}, \cite{Esposito2}. Wind friction, wind friction threshold, horizontal sand flux and vertical dust flux were simulated by using the following inputs measured in the field: wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, air pressure, air humidity, solar irradiation and surface roughness length. The same inputs are supposed to be measured by DREAMs equipment on Mars (except for the surface roughness length which can be estimated for Mars according the method of Hebrard \cite{Hebrard}). Simulated and experimental values have shown a good agreement. The model was adapted to Martian conditions and applied to the data of Viking lander. The local wind erosion and dust deposition model parameterized for Mars may serve 1) to analyze local lander/rovers data, 2) a source of local parameters/inputs (like threshold wind friction velocity, sand and dust fluxes) for the MGCM (Mars Global Circulation Model).

Abstract:The illuminated dusty surface of Mars acts like a gas pump. It is driven by thermal creep at low pressure within the soil. In the top soil layer this gas flow has to be sustained by a pressure gradient. This is equivalent to a lifting force on the dust grains. The top layer is therefore under tension which reduces the threshold wind speed for saltation. We carried out laboratory experiments to quantify the thickness of this activated layer. We use basalt with an average particle size of 67μm. We find a depth of the active layer of 100–200μm. Scaled to Mars the activation will reduce threshold wind speeds for saltation by about 10%.

Widespread weathered glass on the surface of Mars

Abstract:Low albedo sediments cover >107 km2 in the northern lowlands of Mars, but the composition and origin of these widespread deposits have remained ambiguous despite many previous investigations. Here we use near-infrared spectra acquired by the Mars Express OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces, et l'Activité) imaging spectrometer to show that these sediments exhibit spectral characteristics that are consistent with both high abundances of iron-bearing glass and silica-enriched leached rinds on glass. This interpretation is supported by observations of low-albedo soil grains with possible rinds at the Phoenix Mars Lander landing site in the northern lowlands. By comparison with the extensive glass-rich dune fields and sand sheets of Iceland, we propose an explosive volcanic origin for these glass-rich sediments. We also propose that the glassy remnant rinds on the sediments are the result of postdepositional alteration, as these rinds are commonly formed in arid terrestrial volcanic environments during water-limited, moderately acidic leaching. These weathered, glass-rich deposits in the northern lowlands are also colocated with the strongest concentrations of a major global compositional surface type previously identified in mid-infrared spectra, suggesting that they may be representative of global processes. Our results provide potential confirmation of models suggesting that explosive volcanism has been widespread on Mars, and also raise the possibilities that glass-rich volcaniclastics are a major source of eolian sand on Mars and that widespread surficial aqueous alteration has occurred under Amazonian climatic conditions.
