Abstract:Active sites and structure–activity relationships for methanol synthesis from a stoichiometric mixture of CO2 and H2 were investigated for a series of coprecipitated Cu-based catalysts with temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2O decomposition. Experiments in a reaction chamber attached to an XPS instrument show that metallic Cu exists on the surface of both reduced and spent catalysts and there is no evidence of monovalent Cu+ species. This finding provides reassurance regarding the active oxidation state of Cu in methanol synthesis catalysts because it is observed with 6 compositions possessing different metal oxide additives, Cu particle sizes, and varying degrees of ZnO crystallinity. Smaller Cu particles demonstrate larger turnover frequencies (TOF) for methanol formation, confirming the structure sensitivity of this reaction. No correlation between TOF and lattice strain in Cu crystallites is observed suggesting this structural parameter is not responsible for the activity. Moreover, changes in the observed rates may be ascribed to relative distribution of different Cu facets as more open and low-index surfaces are present on the catalysts containing small Cu particles and amorphous or well-dispersed ZnO. In general, the activity of these systems results from large Cu surface area, high Cu dispersion, and synergistic interactions between Cu and metal oxide support components, illustrating that these are key parameters for developing fundamental mechanistic insight into the performance of Cu-based methanol synthesis catalysts.

Abstract:Supported metal nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are vital for the sustainable production of chemicals, but their design and implementation are limited by the ability to identify and characterize their structures and atomic sites that are correlated with high catalytic activity. Identification of these ''active sites'' has relied heavily on extrapolation to supported NP systems from investigation of idealized surfaces, experimentally using single crystals or supported NPs which are always modelled computationally using slab or regular polyhedra models. However, the ability of these methods to predict catalytic activity remains qualitative at best, as the structure of metal NPs in reactive environments has only been speculated from indirect experimental observations, or otherwise remains wholly unknown. Here, by circumventing these limitations for highly accurate simulation methods, we provide direct atomistic insight into the dynamic restructuring of metal NPs by combining in situ spectroscopy with molecular dynamics simulations powered by a machine learned force field. We find that in reactive environments, NP surfaces evolve to a state with poorly defined atomic order, while the core of the NP may remain bulk-like. These insights prove that long-standing conceptual models based on idealized faceting for small metal NP systems are not representative of real systems under exposure to reactive environments. We show that the resultant structure can be elucidated by combining advanced spectroscopy and computational tools. This discovery exemplifies that to enable faithful quantitative predictions of catalyst function and stability, we must move beyond idealized-facet experimental and theoretical models and instead employ systems which include realistic surface structures that respond to relevant physical and chemical conditions.

Abstract:Identification of the catalytic active site is critical in the design and development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts. Many high-precision experimental techniques, as well as computational methods, have been developed to address this problem, but identifying the active site for composite oxide catalysts remains a challenging task because of their complexity and indiscernible microstructures. Herein, we provide a key new insight into the active site within a composite oxide catalyst by investigating an iron-based oxide catalyst with complex components. The dopant atoms with octahedral coordination located at substitution sites in the Fe2O3 lattice tune the electronic structure of the adjacent iron atoms, which act as the active sites that lead to enhanced catalytic activity. This atomic-scale doping is different from the emerging single-atom catalyst concept, in which the single atom on the support is the active site, and which provides an alternative methodology of improving the activity of heterogeneous catalysts with maximized heteroatom efficiency.

Abstract:To date, copper-based catalysts are one of the most prominent catalysts that can electrochemically reduce CO 2 towards high-value fuels or chemicals, such as ethylene, ethanol, acetic acid. However, the chemically active feature of Cu-based catalysts hinders the understanding of the intrinsic catalytic active sites during the initial and the operative processes of electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). The identification and engineering of active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts are thereby vital to further improve the activity, selectivity, and durability of Cu-based catalysts for high-performance CO 2 RR. In this regard, four triggers for the dynamic evolution of catalysts were introduced in detail. Afterward, three typical active-site theories during the dynamic reconstruction of catalysts were discussed. In addition, the strategies in catalyst design were summarized according to the latest reports of Cu-based catalysts for CO 2 RR, including the tuning of electronic structure, controlling of the external potential, and regulation of local catalytic environment. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives were provided to inspire more investigations and studies on the intrinsic active sites during the dynamic evolution of catalysts, which could promote the optimization of the catalyst system to further improve the performance of CO 2 RR.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts play a pivotal role in the production of fuels and chemicals and environmental remediation. However, identification and tailoring of the active metal sites on these catalysts still remain a formidable challenge, primarily due to their dynamic nature in catalytic reactions. Here, we report a simple and effective strategy for tuning supported Cu nanoparticles via controllable in situ surface restructuring to form coordinatively more unsaturated Cu sites, which exhibit a 4-fold increase in catalytic turnover rate and high stability, as probed by the ethanol dehydrogenation reaction. In situ measurements by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal intense phase transformation and consequent dynamic restructuring of Cu nanoparticles, induced by oxidation with temporarily added nitrous oxide and subsequent reduction under reaction conditions. Such restructuring is precisely controlled at the Cu surfaces without altering Cu dispersion, oxidation state, etc., enabling us to unambiguously identify the active sites during catalysis. This strategy, an alternative to many sophisticated synthesis methods, has been shown to be effective for engineering different Cu catalysts and in turn markedly enhancing their catalytic activity for a wide range of reactions varying from alcohol dehydrogenation to methanol steam reforming.

Abstract:Adopting low-index single-crystal surfaces as models for metal nanoparticle catalysts has been questioned by the experimental findings of adsorbate-induced formation of subnanometer clusters on several single-crystal surfaces. We used density functional theory calculations to elucidate the conditions that lead to cluster formation and show how adatom formation energies enable efficient screening of the conditions required for adsorbate-induced cluster formation. We studied a combination of eight face-centered cubic transition metals and 18 common surface intermediates and identified systems relevant to catalytic reactions, such as carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation and ammonia (NH 3 ) oxidation. We used kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to elucidate the CO-induced cluster formation process on a copper surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy of CO on a nickel (111) surface that contains steps and dislocations points to the structure sensitivity of this phenomenon. Metal-metal bond breaking that leads to the evolution of catalyst structures under realistic reaction conditions occurs much more broadly than previously thought.

Abstract:The construction of stable active sites in nanocatalysts is of great importance but is a challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Unexpectedly, coordination-unsaturated and atomically dispersed copper species were constructed and stabilized in a sintered copper-ceria catalyst through air-calcination at 800 °C. This sintered copper-ceria catalyst showed a very high activity for CO oxidation with a CO consumption rate of 6,100 molCO·gCu-1·s-1 at 120 °C, which was at least 20 times that of other reported copper catalysts. Additionally, the excellent long-term stability was unbroken under the harsh cycled reaction conditions. Based on a comprehensive structural characterization and mechanistic study, the copper atoms with unsaturated coordination in the form of Cu1O3 were identified to be the sole active site, at which both CO and O2 molecules were activated, thus inducing remarkable CO oxidation activity with a very low copper loading (1 wt.%).

Abstract:Fundamental investigations of catalyst nanoparticles Heterogeneous catalysis, the conversion of chemicals by the use of a suitable solid state catalyst, is a very important technology in modern society and it is involved in the production of up to 90% of all chemicals. Catalysis has in this way played a significant role in the technological and economic development in the 20th century. There is however a downside to this development and we are seeing significant pollution and pressure on resources. Catalysis therefore has an increasingly important role in limiting pollution and optimizing the use of resources. This development will depend on our fundamental understanding of catalytic processes and our ability to make use of that understanding. This thesis presents fundamental studies of catalyst nanoparticles with particular focus on dynamic processes. Such studies often require atomic-scale characterization, because the catalytic conversion takes place on the molecular and atomic level. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has the ability to image nanostructures with atomic resolution and reveal the atomic configuration of the important nanoparticle surfaces. In the present work, TEM has been used to study nanoparticles in situ at elevated temperature and with gas present in the microscope in order to recreate the conditions found in a chemical reactor. This is very important because we know that particles may change shape as their surfaces respond to a changing gas atmosphere. To obtain quantitative and credible information in situ, it is very important that we only study intrinsic structures and phenomena and not those that may be induced by the high energy electrons used to image the specimen. This requires careful consideration of the influence of the electron beam in order to understand, control and minimize that influence. I present four different topics, each related to different aspects of nanoparticle dynamics and catalysis. The first topic is the reduction of a homogeneous solid state precursor to form the catalytically active phase which is metal nanoparticles on an inert support. Here, we have reduced Cu phyllosilicate to Cu on silica and imaged the process in situ. The data obtained established the foundation for modeling work which revealed that the reduction proceeded by an autocatalytic route. Here, the initial nucleation of Cu is slow and the subsequent growth in size is fast because the Cu particles themselves catalyze further reduction. The second topic treated the active state of a methanol synthesis catalyst. This work was performed by a parallel approach, where we investigated identically created nanoparticles both with TEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The methanol synthesis catalyst is a complex high surface area Cu=ZnO=Al2O3 structure that is difficult to study by TEM. We therefore created size-selected CuZn alloy nanoparticles that were transformed by oxidation and reduction into Cu nanoparticles decorated with ZnO. This represents a simplified model system for the high surface area catalyst. The interplay between Cu and ZnO and the exact role of ZnO as a promoter for catalytic activity is not yet fully understood. Our work revealed that the surface of the reduced catalyst consists mainly of Cu decorated with well defined ZnO crystals. It was demonstrated by XPS that a fraction of the ZnO is reduced simultaneously with the Cu under H2 atmosphere, presumably forming a surface alloy in the Cu. The third topic studied the sintering of Cu nanoparticles supported on silica. Sintering is the main deactivation mechanism for the methanol synthesis catalyst and so this topic is of great interest to the development of better catalysts. It was found that sintering proceeded via Ostwald ripening, i. e. the migration of atomic species between particles, with a net flow from small to larger particles resulting in an overall growth in particle size. The presence of CO increased the rate of sintering significantly and the presence of H2O slowed it down. The fourth topic investigated the oxidation of CO on a Pt catalyst in the special case where the reaction displays temporal rate oscillations under fixed conditions. This is a well-known phenomenon, but the mechanism driving the oscillations on nanoparticles has hitherto been unknown. We used nanoreactor technology which allows for simultaneous TEM imaging and activity measurement, also referred to as an Operando experiment. With this we revealed that the shape of the Pt nanoparticles changed in phase with changes in global reaction rate. By the use of reactor modeling it was possible to show that the oscillations were possible due to the coupling between the self-poisoning nature of the CO oxidation reaction on Pt and gas flow and diffusion in the reactor. Our work showed that shape changes can drive global rate oscillations.

Abstract:Constructing the structure and composition of active sites of catalysts to discriminate between reaction molecules remains a grand challenge in heterogeneous catalysis, as the ability to precisely control the interfacial chemistry within molecular-scale environments is largely lacking. Here, we recognize the reaction sites of thiolate-ligand protected gold nanoclusters for CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) by cleaving the Au-S or C-S bonds selectively that can be controlled by Cd doping. Our study reveals that the C-S bond cleavage occurring on partial ligands leads to the creation of open S sites that are able to readily bind the CO2 molecule and catalyze its reduction, while the breaking of Au-S bonds creates exposed metal sites to favor H-2 evolution that is considered as the main complete reaction of CO2RR. We further tailor the reactivities of these two types of reaction sites by only the ligand derivatization, which holds great promise in rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract The active sites for CO 2 electroreduction (CO 2 R) to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products over oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) catalysts are under long-term intense debate. This paper describes the atomic structure motifs for product-specific active sites on OD-Cu catalysts in CO 2 R. Herein, we describe realistic OD-Cu surface models by simulating the oxide-derived process via the molecular dynamic simulation with neural network (NN) potential. After the analysis of over 150 surface sites through NN potential based high-throughput testing, coupled with density functional theory calculations, three square-like sites for C–C coupling are identified. Among them, Σ3 grain boundary like planar-square sites and convex-square sites are responsible for ethylene production while step-square sites, i.e. n (111) × (100), favor alcohols generation, due to the geometric effect for stabilizing acetaldehyde intermediates and destabilizing Cu–O interactions, which are quantitatively demonstrated by combined theoretical and experimental results. This finding provides fundamental insights into the origin of activity and selectivity over Cu-based catalysts and illustrates the value of our research framework in identifying active sites for complex heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Alloy nanoparticle catalysts are known to afford unique activities that can differ markedly from their parent metals, but there remains a generally limited understanding of the nature of their atomic (and likely dynamic) structures as exist in heterogeneously supported forms under reaction conditions. Obstructed surface states as the origin of catalytic activity in inorganic heterogeneous catalysts

Abstract:The discovery of new catalysts that are efficient, sustainable, and low-cost is a major research endeavor for many industrial chemical processes. This requires an understanding and determination of the catalytic origins for the given catalysts, which still remains a challenge. Here we describe a novel method to identify new catalysts based on searching for crystalline symmetry-protected obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) that have metallic surface states on otherwise semiconducting or insulating compounds. The Wannier charge centers in OAIs are pinned by symmetries at some empty Wyckoff positions so that surfaces that accommodate these sites are guaranteed to have metallic obstructed surface states (OSSs). Beyond the well-studied 2H-MoS2, we further verified our theory on the catalysts, 2H-MoTe2, and 1T'-MoTe2, whose catalytic active sites are consistent with our calculations of obstructed Wannier charge centers (OWCCs) and OSSs. In addition, we have predicted the location of catalytic active sites and confirmed these predictions by exploring the hydrogen evolution reaction on NiPS3 bulk single crystals, which we find to be one of the most promising new catalysts with high activity and, moreover, of low cost. Most importantly, we successfully identified several high-efficient catalysts just by considering the number of OWCCs and the crystal symmetry of the OAIs. Using the real space invariant theory and high-throughput computational methods applied to a database of 34013 topologically trivial insulators, we have identified 1788 unique OAIs (3383 ICSDs), of which 465 are potential high-quality catalysts for heterogeneous reactions. The Miller indices of the active surfaces are also obtained. Our new methodology will facilitate and accelerate the discovery of new catalysts for a wide range of heterogeneous redox reactions, where sustainability, toxicity, and cost must be considered.

Abstract:Direct identification of the active sites of a working catalyst is still a major problem in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we present an operando scanning tunnelling microscopy study, in which insight into the nature of the active sites was obtained for the cobalt-catalysed Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. Experiments were performed on a Co(0001) sample under H2/CO gas mixtures at pressures of up to 950 mbar and a temperature of ~500 K. On the same apparatus, turnover frequencies were measured with a customized gas chromatograph. The density of monoatomic steps of the sample was varied by sputtering. The Fischer–Tropsch activity scaled with step density, from which steps are identified as the active sites of this reaction. The long-standing idea that the activation of the Co catalyst is connected with a roughening of the surface is not confirmed. The known activity function can be explained by pre-existing steps without roughening.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are widely applied in several catalytic electrochemical reactions for energy storage and conversion. The improvement of specific activity of Pt is typically achieved by introducing the transition metal to obtain the alloy structure. Different from the traditional alloy structure, herein, we report Pt catalyst modified with Co single atoms obtained by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The as-prepared catalysts show much higher mass activity and excellent stability compared to commercial Pt/C catalysts towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The atomic resolution TEM images and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) indicate the formation of atomically dispersed Co on Pt. First principle calculations reveal that the Co atom affects the electronic structure of the Pt catalysts, which resulted in the high HER and ORR performance. This work provides a new approach for the rational design of highly active and stable Pt-based catalysts, which hold great potential for application in various catalytic reactions.

Implanting Mo Atoms into Surface Lattice of Pt3Mn Alloys Enclosed by High-Indexed Facets: Promoting Highly Active Sites for Ethylene Glycol Oxidation

Abstract:The instable structure of Pt-based high-indexed facets (HIFs) facile reconstructed is a key obstacle for further practical applications because of its high surface energy and amounts of undercoordinated surface atoms. Herein, a strategy to advance the fundamental surface study on Pt-based HIFs materials is addressed by implanting non-noble metal or nonmetals as "active auxiliaries" into the near-surface of noble metal nanocrystals bounded with HIFs to engineer a stable structured catalyst. Then the Mo/Pt3Mn catalysts serving as proof-of-concept examples are designed and show enhanced catalytic performance of ethylene glycol (EG). According to the electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, the Mo modified Pt3Mn alloys with HIFs promote not only the C-C cleavage of EG but also the direct conversion of COHx to CO2, without the formation of COL poison species. In this case, the Mo/Pt3Mn catalysts show the greatly significant increase of the catalytic activity in copamprison with Pt3Mn CNC and the commercial Pt/C, as well as the enhanced stability. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrum assisted by Ar surface etching experiments accompanied by density functional theory calculations are further used to explore the structure-performance relationship of Mo/Pt3Mn CNC for electro-oxidation of EG. This study addresses a promising strategy to fabricate a stable structured catalysts, which will elucidate a very promising methodology for developing Pt-based catalysts for further application of the fuel cell.

Abstract:Pt-based alloys are important catalysts in fuel cells, especially for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A key problem to be addressed is to develop high-activity ORR catalysts with low Pt loading or, equivalently, to increase the catalytic activity per Pt amount. Here, we report a Pt-Co alloy catalyst with Pt-enriched skin and a Pt-Co core structure via microwave activation and ethylene glycol reduction. The synthesis route is efficient and controllable, resulting in highly active catalysts with a fine particle size and narrow size distribution. The synthesized catalysts show significant advantages in ORR activity compared to commercial catalysts. We proposed that the improved activity and stability are due to a Pt-enriched surface of the Pt3Co catalysts, and such a surface structure is dynamically formed via selective etching of Co during nonequilibrium synthesis under the harsh environment of acid, ethylene glycol reduction, and microwave treatment.
