Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:We report the controllable electrophoretic fabrication of highly robust, efficient, and benign photoelectrocatalysts based on graphene-quantum-dot sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays. Their catalytic activities under visible-light irradiation remain steady for continuous cycles (400 min) with a negligible decrease, whereas CdS and CdSe sensitized TiO2 nanotube arrays show a high cycling instability due to serious photooxidization.

Abstract:For the application of photocatalysis, the development of noble metal-free cocatalysts is crucial. Here, a simple molecular fusion method was employed to create high crystallinity GQDs with the-NHNH2 modification, which were then used as an effective metal-free cocatalyst in the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction. The modified-NHNH2 Lewis base active sites, the quick charge separation channels, and the improved electric conductivity allowed the optimized NHNH2-GQDs/PUCN sample to exhibit an H2 evolution rate of 204.2 mmol g-1 h-1, which is an 80-fold greater activity than that of pure PUCN. This work will provide insights into the design of metal-free cocatalysts for photocatalytic H2 evolution applications.(c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Graphene Quantum Dots Modified Ag3PO4 for Facile Synthesis and the Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:The graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with outstanding electron conductivity and good optical properties modified Ag3PO4 composites were prepared by a simple two-step method. Compared to pure Ag3PO4, the GQDs/Ag3PO4 composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activities for degradation Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) under the visible-light irradiation. More interestingly, the stabilities of Ag3PO4 were also been improved after introducing GQDs. The possible reaction mechanism was proposed by discussing comprehensive characterizations, which indicated that the GQDs can work as electron acceptors to enhance separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The structure-activity relationships have been studied in detail. The active species was determined and photocatalytic mechanism was proposed.
Facile Fabrication of Magnetically Separable Graphitic Carbon Nitride Photocatalysts with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light

Abstract:Because of their potential application in the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy, the development of semiconductor photocatalysts that have high reactivity under visible light has received great attention. In the present work, we illustrate the design and fabrication of magnetically separable polymeric carbon nitride photocatalysts, i.e. Fe2O3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts, a novel type of visible light driven photocatalyst with a cost-effective recovery manner. The obtained Fe2O3/g-C3N4 composite catalysts with different Fe2O3 contents were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), vibration sample magnetometry (VSM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The saturation magnetization at 300 K varies from 0.37 to 1.56 emu g(-1), depending on the different Fe2O3 contents (2.8-11.6 wt%) in the Fe2O3/g-C3N4 composites, clearly indicating the excellent magnetic separation characteristics of the as-prepared photocatalysts. Remarkably, the photocatalytic activity of the magnetic Fe2O3/g-C3N4 photocatalysts under visible light irradiation was increased up to 1.8 times for the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation compared with the conventional pure g-C3N4 photocatalyst. A possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Fe2O3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was also proposed to guide the further improvement of their photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Freestanding paper-like materials prepared from chemically derived graphene have considerable potential as a carbon-based catalyst in high-performance flexible catalytic reaction. Herein, a highly flexible graphene paper (GP) assembled from graphene oxides (GOs) with the aid of polyacrylamide (PAA) and electroless deposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared. In contrast to previous reports on GOs based on a flow-directed assembly of graphene sheets, this GOs/PAA/Au composite paper exhibited a highly wrinkled and disordered morphology. The resultant GOs/PAA/Au composite paper was applied as a catalytic material for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and showed the favour separation, recovery and cyclic utilization properties.

Abstract:α-Fe2O3/porous g-C3N4 (α-Fe2O3/PCN) photocatalysts were fabricated via a facile and green method. Structural characterization indicated α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto PCN. The α-Fe2O3/PCN nanocomposites were proven durable with significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B photodegradation than the single components under visible light irradiation. The improved photoactivity was mainly attributed to the broadened visible light absorption, enriched active sites, and formation of α-Fe2O3/PCN heterojunction that addressed the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes. The α-Fe2O3/PCN hybrids also showed high recyclability and chemical stability.

Abstract:The design of photocatalysts plays a central role in determining the photocatalytic H2 yield. Here, we used a design strategy that is different from conventional methods to prepare our photocatalytic systems. Large porous carbon aerogels (CA) with rich surface areas were used to receive photogenerated electrons. TiO2 quantum dots were used as photocatalysts and anchored on large porous CAs to form CA@TiO2 systems. The H2 yield of the optimized CA@TiO2 composite is ∼2.1 mmol/g, ∼11 times higher than that of pure TiO2 quantum dots. High-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the photogenerated electrons can be easily transferred from TiO2 quantum dots to porous CAs. Thus, efficient charge separation can be realized for the succeeding highly efficient H2 evolution. Our results here provide a different way from conventional methods to design photocatalytic systems with high H2 yield.

Znfe2o4 Multi-Porous Microbricks/Graphene Hybrid Photocatalyst: Facile Synthesis, Improved Activity and Photocatalytic Mechanism

Abstract:Great efforts have been made recently to develop graphene-based visible-light-response photocatalysts and investigate their application in environmental field. In this study, a novel graphene-supported ZnFe2O4 multi-porous microbricks hybrid was synthesized via a facile deposition-precipitation reaction, followed by a hydrothermal treatment. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the hybrid were well characterized, indicating that an intimate contact between ZnFe2O4 microbricks and graphene sheets has been formed. The photocatalytic degradation of p-chlorophenol experiments indicated that the graphene-supported ZnFe2O4 multi-porous microbricks hybrid exhibited a much higher photocatalytic activity than the pure ZnFe2O4 multi-porous microbricks and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles under the visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm). The enhancement of photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the fast photogenerated charge separation and transfer due to the high electron mobility of graphene sheets, improved light absorption, high specific surface area as well as multi-porous structure of the hybrid. Photoluminescence and radicals trapping studies revealed the hydroxyl radicals were involved as the main active oxygen species in the photocatalytic reaction. The work could open new possibilities to provide some insights into the design of new graphene-based hybrid photocatalysts with high activity for environmental purification applications. Enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance of a monolithic tungsten oxide/graphene oxide aerogel for nitric oxide oxidation

Abstract:Photocatalysis is considered a promising technique for removal of pollutants from indoor air. However, the low selectivity and limited recyclability of photocatalysts in powder form currently limit their practical application. In this work, we reported the successful preparation of a monolithic tungsten oxide (WO3)/graphene oxide (GO) aerogel photocatalyst through a cost-effective freeze-drying method. GO not only acts as a macroscopic support, but also increases the catalyst surface area from 46 to 57 m2/g, enhances the light absorption in the visible-light region, and raises the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The Obtained WO3/GO aerogel exhibited an outstanding visible-light photocatalytic degradation rate of nitric oxide of 51%, which was 3.3 times that of pristine WO3 powder. In addition, the aerogel displayed excellent selectivity, with a generation fraction of toxic nitrogen dioxide of as low as 0.5%. This work presents a facile synthesis route to fabricate a monolithic WO3/GO aerogel photocatalyst with great promise for air purification.

Abstract:Magnetically recyclable ZnFe2O4/ZnO nanocomposites immobilized on different content of graphene with favorable photocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation were successfully prepared on the basis of an ultrasound aided solution method. The molar ratio of ZnFe2O4 to ZnO and the content of graphene could be controlled by adjusting the amount of zinc salts and graphene oxide dispersions. The most excellent photocatalytic activity under solar light irradiation was displayed when the molar ratio of ZnFe2O4 to ZnO was 0.1 and the weight ratio of graphene to ZnFe2O4/ZnO was 0.04. Furthermore, the presence of magnetical ZnFe2O4 will facilitate the recycling process of photocatalyst nanoparticles.

Abstract:A visible-light photoredox with homogeneous catalyst like transition metal complexes and organic dyes shows promising applications in organic synthesis. However, the practical applications of these photocatalysts are hampered by the difficulty of separating and recycling them from the reaction mixtures. In this study, we report the covalent immobilization of Eosin Y on reduced graphene oxide and demonstrate the obtained hybrid can be used as a recyclable photocatalyst with excellent catalytic performances in the aerobic oxidation of alpha-aryl halogen derivatives.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology has been considered to be an ideal approach to solve the energy and environmental crises, and TiO2 is regarded as the most promising photocatalyst. Compared with bare TiO2, TiO2 based p-n heterojunction exhibits a much better performance in charge separation, light absorption and photocatalytic activity. Herein, we developed an efficient method to prepare p-type TiO2 quantum dots (QDs) and decorated graphitic carbonitrile (g-C3N4) nanocomposites, while the composition and structure of the TiO2@g-C3N4 were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy characterizations. The characterization results reveal the surface decorated TiO2 quantum dots is decomposed by titanium glycerolate, which exhibits p-type conductivity. The presence of p-n heterojunction over interface is confirmed, and photoluminescence results indicate a better performance in transfer and separation of photo-generated charge carriers than pure semiconductors and type-II heterojunction. Moreover, the synergy of p-n heterojunction over interface, strong interface interaction, and quantum-size effect significantly contributes to the promoted performance of TiO2 QDs@g-C3N4 composites. As a result, the as-fabricated TiO2 QDs@g-C3N4 composite with a p/n mass ratio of 0.15 exhibits improved photo-reactivity of 4.3-fold and 5.4-fold compared to pure g-C3N4 in degradation of organic pollutant under full solar spectrum and visible light irradiation, respectively.
Fabrication of a reusable carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified nanocomposite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

Abstract:In awareness of industrial dye wastewater, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and cobalt zinc ferrite (CZF) nanocomposites were synthesised for the making of carbon quantum dots coated cobalt zinc ferrite (CZF@CQDs) nanophotocatalyst using oxidative polymerization reaction. The results of TEM, zeta potential value, and FTIR confirm highly dispersed 1-4 nm particles with the - 45.7 mV carboxylic functionalized surface of CQDs. The results of the synthesised CZF@CQDs photocatalyst showed an average particle size of ~ 15 nm according to TEM, SEM, and XRD. The photocatalyst showed a 1.20 eV band gap, which followed the perfect visible light irradiation. TGA and DTA revealed the good thermal stability of the nanophotocatalyst. VSM was carried out, and the saturation magnetisations for CZF and CZF@CQDs were 42.44 and 36.14 emu/g, respectively. A multipoint study determined the BET-specific surface area of the CZF@CQDs photocatalyst to be 149.87 m2/g. Under visible light irradiation, the final CZF@CQDs nanophotocatalyst demonstrated remarkable efficiency (~ 95% within 25 min) in the photocatalytic destruction of Reactive Blue 222 (RB 222) and Reactive Yellow 145 (RY 145) dyes, as well as mechanical stability and recyclability. Even after the recycling of the degradation study, the nanophotocatalyst efficiency (~ 82%, 7th cycles) was predominantly maintained. The effects of several parameters were also investigated, including initial dye concentration, nanophotocatalyst concentration, CQD content, initial pH of the dye solution, and reaction kinetics. Degradation study data follow the first-order reaction rate (R2 > 0.93). Finally, a simple and low-cost synthesis approach, rapid degradation, and outstanding stability of the CQD-coated CZF nanophotocatalyst should make it a potential photocatalyst for dye wastewater treatment.
Separable and Recyclable Meso-Carbon@tio2/carbon Fiber Composites for Visible-Light Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis

Abstract:Recycle and reuse of the nanosized photocatalysts is a common challenge in the catalyst field. To address this issue, we rationally load meso-carbon@TiO2 core-shell microspheres on carbon fiber felt to synthesize macro-sized meso-carbon@TiO2/carbon fiber composites by an in-situ adsorption method. From the detailed microstructural and spectroscopic characterization, it has been found that the absorption edge of meso-carbon@TiO2 core-shell microspheres is extended to the visible light region, and the recombination of photon-excited electrons and holes can be significantly suppressed when compared with P25 TiO2 powder. The experiment results of meso-carbon@TiO2/carbon fiber composites indicates that the photocatalytic degradation rate under UV-vis light ismuch higher than that under visible light irradiation due to the higher charge carrier separation efficiency and the higher electron consumption of the direct Z-scheme. Moreover, the photocurrent density and the separation of photon-excited electrons from holes can be effectively promoted in the photoelectrocatalysis of meso-carbon@TiO2/carbon fiber composites under visible light. The synergistic effect between electrocatalytic and photocatalytic oxidation under visible light results in almost complete degradation of Rhodamine B. Our study provides an avenue to recycle and reuse nanosized photocatalysts and open a possibility for practical industrial application of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis using separable and recyclable meso-carbon@TiO2/carbon fiber composites. Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an outstanding photocatalytic semiconductor, but wide band gap of TiO2 significantly restricts its photocatalytic performance. Graphene possesses promising mechanical, optical and electrical properties. Relying on the excellent gain effect of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on conductivity, unique up-conversion photoluminescence property and remarkable dye adsorption, the photoelectric properties of TiO2 can be significantly improved. In this study, a novel structure of GQDs-decorated TiO2 nanofibers was successfully prepared by electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis procedures. The synthesized GQDs/TiO2 nanofibers composite exhibited a one-dimensional structure. The results show that introduction of GQDs prohibits the adverse recombination between photoinduced charges and prolongs the existence time. The photocatalytic properties characterization results show that 10% mass fraction of GQDs in composite nanofibers has the best degradation activity with its ultrafast electron transport rate and low electron–hole pair recombination rate.

Abstract:Given the versatility and value of the semiconductor composites for photocatalysis, we reported a new, friendly environment, high specific surface area material of the graphene quantum dots/hollow titanium dioxide nanosphere (GQDs/H-TiO2) composites which are synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. GQDs (~ 5 nm) exhibit highly photoluminescent and widely visible light absorption properties. H-TiO2 has high surface area and abundant exposed active sites for photocatalysis. The research demonstrates that GQDs coupled on H-TiO2 can effectively enlarge the light absorption of the H-TiO2 to visible region (~ 650 nm) and enhance the electron–hole pair separation efficiency of GQDs/H-TiO2 composites owing to GQDs acting as an electron repository and electron transport bridge. In our delight, the photocurrent enhancement of newly prepared GQDs-3.0/H-TiO2 composite electrode was almost 3.5 times higher in comparison with that in pure H-TiO2 electrode at an applied voltage of 0.5 V using Na2SO4 (0.5 M) solution as the electrolyte. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the prepared GQDs-3.0/H-TiO2 (96.9%) on the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) was also significantly enhanced compared with that of pure H-TiO2 (33.3%) after 180 min. The protocol is suitable not only for the GQDs-modified semiconductors photocatalysts but also provides further insights to apply GQDs to other energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Robust hollow spheres consisting of molecular-scale alternating titania (Ti0.91O2) nanosheets and graphene (G) nanosheets are successfully fabricated by a layer-by-layer assembly technique with polymer beads as sacrificial templates using a microwave irradiation technique to simultaneously remove the template and reduce graphene oxide into graphene. The molecular scale, 2D contact of Ti0.91O2 nanosheets and G nanosheets in the hollow spheres is distinctly different from the prevenient G-based TiO2 nanocomposites prepared by simple integration of TiO2 and G nanosheets. The nine times increase of the photocatalytic activity of G-Ti0.91O2 hollow spheres relative to commercial P25 TiO2 is confirmed with photoreduction of CO2 into renewable fuels (CO and CH4). The large enhancement in the photocatalytic activity benefits from: 1) the ultrathin nature of Ti0.91O2 nanosheets allowing charge carriers to move rapidly onto the surface to participate in the photoreduction reaction; 2) the sufficiently compact stacking of ultrathin Ti0.91O2 nanosheets with G nanosheets allowing the photogenerated electron to transfer fast from the Ti0.91O2 nanosheets to G to enhance lifetime of the charge carriers; and 3) the hollow structure potentially acting as a photon trap-well to allow the multiscattering of incident light for the enhancement of light absorption.
