Abstract:Fouling is the accumulation of unwanted material on solid surfaces. The fouling materials can consist of either living organisms or non-living substances. Therefore, analysis of mass transfer mechanisms in microstructured environments such as gels, biofilms, and porous media is of great importance in fouling prevention. To this end, one potential approach is to use electroosmotic flow, which is widely used to control fluid flow and transport processes in micro-scale devices. In this study, the neutral solute transfer under the influence of electroosmotic flow through a charged microchannel with a porous wall was numerically investigated. The effectiveness of electroosmotic flow in reducing the fouling of the microchannel wall was examined to find suitable operating conditions for a facilitated permeation through the porous membrane wall. The effect of various parameters such as retention factor, neutral solute concentration and diffusion coefficient, applied voltage, fluid velocity through the porous wall, and surface charge density on the Sherwood number was evaluated. It was appeared that one can effectively reduce the fouling of microchannel walls by decreasing the concentration of neutral solute near the microchannel wall and increasing the Sherwood number. It was observed that by reducing the retention factor from 0.9 to 0.5 and the ratio of neutral solute concentration to electrolyte concentration from 1 to 0.5, the neutral solute concentration near the microchannel wall was decreased by about 42%documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$42{\%}$$end{document} and 34%documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$34{\%}$$end{document}, respectively. Also, by decreasing the retention factor from 0.9documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$0.9$$end{document} to 0.5documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$0.5$$end{document} and the neutral solute diffusion coefficient from 10-9documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$${10}^{-9}$$end{document} to 10-11m2/sdocumentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$${10}^{-11} {mathrm{m}}^{2}/mathrm{s}$$end{document}, the Sherwood number increases by about 80%documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$80{\%}$$end{document} and 45%documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$45{\%}$$end{document}, respectively. The findings of this study can help for better understanding separation processes by micro-/nanochannels, filtration, and membrane processes to find suitable conditions to reduce clogging and sedimentation.Graphical abstract
