Freshwater biodiversity conservation: recent progress and future challenges

Abstract:Freshwater habitats occupy <1 of the Earth's surface, yet are hotspots that support 10 of all known species, and of vertebrate species. Fresh waters also are hotspots for human activities that have led to widespread habitat degradation, pollution, flow regulation and water extraction, fisheries overexploitation, and alien species introductions. These impacts have caused severe declines in the range and abundance of many freshwater species, so that they are now far more imperiled than their marine or terrestrial counterparts. Here, we review progress in conservation of freshwater biodiversity, with a focus on the period since 1986, and outline key challenges for the future. Driven by rising conservation concerns, freshwater ecologists have conducted a great deal of research over the past 25 y on the status, trends, autecology, and propagation of imperiled species, threats to these species, the consequences of biodiversity loss for ecosystem functioning, metapopulation dynamics, biodiversity hotspots, reserve design, habitat restoration, communication with stakeholders, and weaknesses of protective legislation. Nevertheless, existing efforts might be insufficient to stem the ongoing and coming multitude of freshwater extinctions. We briefly discuss 4 important challenges for freshwater conservation. First, climate change will imperil both freshwater species and human uses of fresh water, driving engineering responses that will further threaten the freshwater biota. We need to anticipate both ecological and human responses to climate change, and to encourage rational and deliberate planning of engineering responses to climate change before disasters strike. Second, because freshwater extinctions are already well underway, freshwater conservationists must be prepared to act now to prevent further losses, even if our knowledge is incomplete, and engage more effectively with other stakeholders. Third, we need to bridge the gap between freshwater ecology and conservation biology. Fourth, we suggest that scientific societies and scholarly journals concerned with limnology or freshwater sciences need to improve their historically poor record in publishing important papers and influencing practice in conservation ecology. Failure to meet these challenges will lead to the extinction or impoverishment of the very subjects of our research.
The impacts of climate change on fish growth: A summary of conducted studies and current knowledge

Abstract:<p>Global climate change is increasingly and profoundly threatening fishes, resulting in an uncertain future for both wild fish diversity and global fisheries. Understanding how fish growth responds to changing environments is essential for indicating and predicting the impacts of climate change on fish populations, communities, and even aquatic ecosystems, but the knowledge on this topic remains incomplete, and some findings are contradictory. This study aimed to review the status of current research by analysing data on the environment, species, and response patterns from 1187 documents published from 1976 to 2018, which helped to identify key questions that are currently neglected and potential reasons for these divergences. The results found that 75% of studies were conducted in the field (mostly in temperate and subtropical zones), while the remainder were controlled experiments. Fishes from freshwater ecosystems were relatively less studied than their marine counterparts. Less than 1% of the recorded fish species (309 vs. approximately 35,000) from 30 orders have been studied to examine their growth responses to climate change. All studied fishes were from Actinopterygii. The top three orders were Perciformes, Cypriniformes, and Salmoniformes by species number, while Salmoniformes was the most frequently studied order. The most common habitat type of the studied fish was pelagic, followed by demersal and reef-associated habitats. Small fishes were relatively undervalued in both marine and freshwater systems. The mean trophic levels of the studied species were 3.2 for freshwater fish and 3.4 for marine fish. Carnivores were the dominant trophic guild studied in both marine and freshwater systems. The overall effects of climate change (primarily temperature variables) on fish growth (reflected in physiology and health) were negative at both the global and local scales. Therefore, the results suggested that future studies covering more species (e.g., chondrichthyan fishes, low-level consumers, and small fishes) and areas (e.g., high-latitude areas) are required to obtain a better understanding of climate change impacts on fish growth.</p>

Abstract:All living things depend on their natural environment, either directly or indirectly, for their high quality of life, growth, nutrition, and development. Due to the fast emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), the Earth's climate system is being negatively impacted by global warming. Stresses caused by climate change, such as rising and hotter seas, increased droughts and floods, and acrid waters, threaten the world's most populated areas and aquatic ecosystems. As a result, the aquatic ecosystems of the globe are quickly reaching hazardous conditions. Marine ecosystems are essential parts of the world's environment and provide several benefits to the human population, such as water for drinking and irrigation, leisure activities, and habitat for commercially significant fisheries. Although local human activities have influenced coastal zones for millennia, it is still unclear how these impacts and stresses from climate change may combine to endanger coastal ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that rising levels of greenhouse gases are causing ocean systems to experience conditions not seen in several million years, which may cause profound and irreversible ecological shifts. Ocean productivity has declined, food web dynamics have changed, habitat-forming species are less common, species ranges have changed, and disease prevalence has increased due to human climate change. We provide an outline of the interaction between global warming and the influence of humans along the coastline. This review aims to demonstrate the significance of long-term monitoring, the creation of ecological indicators, and the applications of understanding how aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning respond to global warming. This review discusses the effects of current climate change on marine biological processes both now and in the future, describes present climate change concerning historical change, and considers the potential roles aquatic systems could play in mitigating the effects of global climate change.

Abstract:Abstract Climate change poses a significant threat to global biodiversity, but freshwater fishes have been largely ignored in climate change assessments. Here, we assess threats of future flow and water temperature extremes to ~11,500 riverine fish species. In a 3.2 °C warmer world (no further emission cuts after current governments’ pledges for 2030), 36% of the species have over half of their present-day geographic range exposed to climatic extremes beyond current levels. Threats are largest in tropical and sub-arid regions and increases in maximum water temperature are more threatening than changes in flow extremes. In comparison, 9% of the species are projected to have more than half of their present-day geographic range threatened in a 2 °C warmer world, which further reduces to 4% of the species if warming is limited to 1.5 °C. Our results highlight the need to intensify (inter)national commitments to limit global warming if freshwater biodiversity is to be safeguarded.

Abstract:Fluvial fishes are threatened globally from intensive human landscape stressors degrading aquatic ecosystems. However, impacts vary regionally, as stressors and natural environmental factors differ between ecoregions and continents. To date, a comparison of fish responses to landscape stressors over continents is lacking, limiting understanding of consistency of impacts and hampering efficiencies in conserving fishes over large regions. This study addresses these shortcomings through a novel, integrative assessment of fluvial fishes throughout Europe and the conterminous United States. Using large-scale datasets, including information on fish assemblages from more than 30,000 locations on both continents, we identified threshold responses of fishes summarized by functional traits to landscape stressors including agriculture, pasture, urban area, road crossings, and human population density. After summarizing stressors by catchment unit (local and network) and constraining analyses by stream size (creeks vs. rivers), we analyzed stressor frequency (number of significant thresholds) and stressor severity (value of identified thresholds) within ecoregions across Europe and the United States. We document hundreds of responses of fish metrics to multi-scale stressors in ecoregions across two continents, providing rich findings to aid in understanding and comparing threats to fishes across the study regions. Collectively, we found that lithophilic species and, as expected, intolerant species are most sensitive to stressors in both continents, while migratory and rheophilic species are similarly strongly affected in the United States. Also, urban land use and human population density were most frequently associated with declines in fish assemblages, underscoring the pervasiveness of these stressors in both continents. This study offers an unprecedented comparison of landscape stressor effects on fluvial fishes in a consistent and comparable manner, supporting conservation of freshwater habitats in both continents and worldwide.

Abstract:River damming has brought great benefits to flood mitigation, energy and food production, and will continue to play a significant role in global energy supply, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America. However, dams have extensively altered global river dynamics, including riverine connectivity, hydrological, thermal, sediment and solute regimes, and the channel morphology. These alterations have detrimental effects on the quality and quantity of fish habitat and associated impacts on aquatic life. Indeed, dams have been implicated in the decline of numerous fishes, emphasizing the need for effective conservation measures. Here, we present a global synthesis of critical issues concerning the impacts of river damming on physical fish habitats, with a particular focus on key fish species across continents. We also consider current fish conservation measures and their applicability in different contexts. Finally, we identify future research needs. The information presented herein will help support sustainable dam operation under the constraints of future climate change and human needs. River damming yields great social-economic benefits, but also causes significant eco-environmental impacts, particularly on fish. Dams block fish migration routes, alter hydrological and water temperature regimes, and modify channel morphology. These changes impact fish physical habitats and associated communities. Here, we synthesize the impacts of river damming on fish physical habitats, and review potential conservation measures that could be used to off-set or mitigate the impacts of dams on fish habitats, populations and communities. Abstract:In the 12 years since Dudgeon et al. (2006) reviewed major pressures on freshwater ecosystems, the biodiversity crisis in the world's lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams and wetlands has deepened. While lakes, reservoirs and rivers cover only 2.3% of the Earth's surface, these ecosystems host at least 9.5% of the Earth's described animal species. Furthermore, using the World Wide Fund for Nature's Living Planet Index, freshwater population declines (83% between 1970 and 2014) continue to outpace contemporaneous declines in marine or terrestrial systems. The Anthropocene has brought multiple new and varied threats that disproportionately impact freshwater systems. We document 12 emerging threats to freshwater biodiversity that are either entirely new since 2006 or have since intensified: (i) changing climates; (ii) e-commerce and invasions; (iii) infectious diseases; (iv) harmful algal blooms; (v) expanding hydropower; (vi) emerging contaminants; (vii) engineered nanomaterials; (viii) microplastic pollution; (ix) light and noise; (x) freshwater salinisation; (xi) declining calcium; and (xii) cumulative stressors. Effects are evidenced for amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, microbes, plants, turtles and waterbirds, with potential for ecosystem-level changes through bottom-up and top-down processes. In our highly uncertain future, the net effects of these threats raise serious concerns for freshwater ecosystems. However, we also highlight opportunities for conservation gains as a result of novel management tools (e.g. environmental flows, environmental DNA) and specific conservation-oriented actions (e.g. dam removal, habitat protection policies, managed relocation of species) that have been met with varying levels of success. Moving forward, we advocate hybrid approaches that manage fresh waters as crucial ecosystems for human life support as well as essential hotspots of biodiversity and ecological function. Efforts to reverse global trends in freshwater degradation now depend on bridging an immense gap between the aspirations of conservation biologists and the accelerating rate of species endangerment.

Abstract:Significance Understanding the mechanisms by which biological communities are reorganized by environmental change is a key question facing ecologists. Using a global database of fish abundance time series spanning recent decades, together with community-level indices describing species temperature and flow affinities, we show that two important aspects of climate change (water temperature and streamflow alteration) are interacting with land-use modification to drive increases in the dominance of species that prefer warm- and slow-water habitats. Although these community reorganizations show substantial geographical variation, they can be explained by a combination of degree of environmental changes and initial community composition. These findings offer insights to improve ecological forecasting in the future to better inform and prioritize conservation actions in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:Climate change impacts on freshwater ecosystems and freshwater biodiversity show strong spatial variability, highlighting the importance of a global perspective. While previous studies on biodiversity mostly focussed on species richness, functional diversity, which is a better predictor of ecosystem functioning, has received much less attention. This study aims to comprehensively assess climate change threats to the functional diversity of freshwater fish across the world, considering three complementary metrics ‐ functional richness, evenness, and divergence. We built on existing spatially explicit projections of geographic ranges for 11,425 riverine fish species as affected by changes in streamflow and water temperature extremes at four warming levels (1.5°C, 2.0°C, 3.2°C, and 4.5°C). To estimate functional diversity, we considered the following four continuous, morphological and physiological traits: relative head length, relative body depth, trophic level, and relative growth rate. Together, these traits cover five ecological functions. We treated missing trait values in two different ways: we either removed species with missing trait values or imputed them. Depending on the warming level, 6‐25% of the locations globally face a complete loss of functional diversity when assuming no dispersal (6‐17% when assuming maximal dispersal), with hotspots in the Amazon and Paraná River basins. The three facets of functional diversity do not always follow the same pattern. Sometimes, functional richness is not yet affected despite species loss, while functional evenness and divergence are already reducing. Other times, functional richness reduces, while functional evenness and/or divergence increase instead. The contrasting patterns of the three facets of functional diversity show their complementarity among each other and their added value compared to species richness. With increasing climate change, impacts on freshwater communities accelerate, making early mitigation critically important.

Abstract:Individual processes scale up: these are the unique phenotypes that undergo selection, constitute populations, interact with other species, and thus shape biological reality. Understanding how individual animals differ in behaviour, that is understanding how behavioural individualities (personalities) emerge and are selected, leads us to a better understanding of how higher level systems, such as food webs, communities, or ecosystems, function. As amidst the contemporary global environmental crisis, freshwater habitats and their fish inhabitants are disproportionately both biodiverse and threatened, it is of crucial importance to understand how individual fishes cope with the anthropogenic change. In the present work we first provide a snapshot view of what personalities in freshwater fish are, how they manifest in different species, are shaped under different selective pressures, emerge over ontogeny, and form complex traits. This includes the review of research on fish boldness, exploration, activity, aggressiveness and sociability, and on their consistency and correlations. We then focus on three major threats to freshwater fish, on how fish cope with them behaviourally, and on where personalities may have profound ecological and evolutionary outcomes. The chosen focus on habitat fragmentation by damming, climate change and chemical pollution provides us with an insight into the pervasive role fish personalities play in the contemporary world.

Global introductions and environmental impacts of freshwater megafish

Abstract:Of the 134 extant freshwater megafish species, 46% have been introduced outside of their native ranges. Over 50% of the alien megafish species with sufficient data to evaluate the severity of their environmental impacts have caused population declines or even extirpations of native species. More research and long‐term monitoring schemes on alien species are required to inform management actions to protect biodiversity, particularly in the Global South. Freshwater megafish species, such as sturgeons, salmonids, carps, and catfishes, have a maximum reported weight ≥30 kg. Due to their charisma and economic value, they have been widely introduced outside of their native ranges. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the introduction of freshwater megafish and an assessment of their environmental impacts. Of the 134 extant freshwater megafish species, 46% have been introduced to new environments, and of these, 69% have established self‐sustaining alien populations. These introductions affect 59% of the world's main basins, with the USA and western Europe being particular hotspots of megafish introductions. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is the most widely introduced species. Using the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT and EICAT+) frameworks, we assessed the severity and type of negative and positive impacts posed by alien megafish on native species. Alien megafish caused negative impacts through nine different mechanisms, with predation being the most frequently reported mechanism, followed by herbivory and competition. Moreover, 58% of the alien megafish species with sufficient data to evaluate the severity of their impacts caused declining populations of native species, or worse, extirpations of native species populations. The positive environmental impacts of alien megafish were far less frequently documented. They include biotic interactions that benefit native species, and the provision of trophic resources or habitats. Widely introduced or extensively studied species are more likely to have documented severe impacts on native species. There is a clear trade‐off between the economic benefits associated with megafish introductions and the severe adverse impacts they have on native biodiversity. Our study highlights the need for comprehensive risk assessments to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of megafish. More research and long‐term monitoring schemes are required to inform management actions to protect biodiversity, particularly in the Global South.

Abstract:Understanding how and why local communities change is a pressing task for conservation, especially in freshwater systems. It remains challenging because of the complexity of biodiversity changes, driven by the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of human pressures. Using a compilation of riverine fish community time series (93% between 1993 and 2019) across the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Australasia realms, we assessed how past and recent anthropogenic pressures drive community changes across both space and time. We found evidence of rapid changes in community composition of 30% per decade characterized by important changes in the dominant species, together with a 13% increase in total abundance per decade and a 7% increase in species richness per decade. The spatial heterogeneity in these trends could be traced back to the strength and timing of anthropogenic pressures and was mainly mediated by non-native species introductions. Specifically, we demonstrate that the negative effects of anthropogenic pressures on species richness and total abundance were compensated over time by the establishment of non-native species, a pattern consistent with previously reported biotic homogenization at the global scale. Overall, our study suggests that accounting for the complexity of community changes and its drivers is a crucial step to reach global conservation goals.

Abstract:Climate warming has been a world-concerned global problem.It brings a series of serious consequences,greatly impacts human survival and development.To reduce carbon dioxide emissions and mitigate global warming,the development of the low carbon economy based on low energy consumption,low pollution and low emission has been our common sense.Fixing and sequestrating greenhouse gases by biological carbon sink is one of the most economical and effective ways.By filtering plankton,filter-feeding fish can reduce indirectly atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and exert carbon sink function.The paper described carbon cycle of freshwater ecosystem without feeding,and presented carbon sink function of filter-feeding fish.At last,carbon sink amount of filter-feeding fish is evaluated based on 2009 relevant statistics of Chinese aquaculture.The research will make a good preparation for low carbon development of freshwater fisheries,and impel the scientific and healthy development of modern fisheries.

Abstract:Water temperature is an abiotic master variable for the survival of aquatic organisms. Global warming alters the thermal regimes of rivers and, thus, poses a threat to freshwater biodiversity. To address the impacts of water temperature changes related to global warming on freshwater fish species in life cycle assessment (LCA), we developed spatially explicit characterization factors (CFs) for 207 greenhouse gases under four representative concentration pathways. We calculated fate factors by using the output of a global hydrological model fully coupled with a dynamic water temperature model. We developed six species sensitivity distribution curves for two thermal effects (i.e., lethal and sub-lethal) to derive effect factors, which take the differences in sensitivity between climate regions into account. The regional CFs for CO2 ranged from 2.91 × 10−22 to 6.53 × 10−18 PAF·yr/kg for sub-lethal effects and from 1.98 × 10−22 to 4.58 × 10−18 PDF·yr/kg for lethal effects, depending on the river watersheds and future climate scenarios. To identify the contribution of regional impacts on freshwater fish to their potential global extinction, the regional CFs were converted into global CFs. The largest CFs always occur in the tropical watersheds. The regional impacts in the Amazon watershed contribute the most to the global freshwater fish species extinction. This study contributes to assessing the potential impacts on freshwater biodiversity from global warming from a new cause-effect pathway in LCA.

Abstract:Anthropogenic threats such as water infrastructure, land-use changes, overexploitation of fishes and other biological resources, invasive species and climate change present formidable challenges to freshwater biodiversity. Historically, management of fish and fishery species has largely been based on studies of population- and community-level dynamics; however, the emerging field of conservation physiology promotes the assessment of individual fish health as a key management tool. Fish health is highly sensitive to environmental disturbances and is also a fundamental driver of fitness, with implications for population dynamics such as recruitment and resilience. However, the mechanistic links between particular anthropogenic disturbances and changes in fish health, or impact pathways, are diverse and complex. The diversity of ways in which fish health can be measured also presents a challenge for researchers deciding on methods to employ in studies seeking to understand the impact of these threats. In this review, we aim to provide an understanding of the pathway through which anthropogenic threats in freshwater ecosystems impact fish health and the ways in which fish health components impacted by anthropogenic threats can be assessed. We employ a quantitative systematic approach to a corpus of papers related to fish health in freshwater and utilize a framework that summarizes the impact pathway of anthropogenic threats through environmental alterations and impact mechanisms that cause a response in fish health. We found that land-use changes were the most prolific anthropogenic threat, with a range of different health metrics being suitable for assessing the impact of this threat. Almost all anthropogenic threats impacted fish health through two or more impact pathways. A robust understanding of the impact pathways of anthropogenic threats and the fish health metrics that are sensitive to these threats is crucial for fisheries managers seeking to undertake targeted management of freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:Mountain catchments provide for the livelihood of more than half of humankind, and have become a key destination for tourist and recreation activities globally. Mountain ecosystems are generally considered to be less complex and less species diverse due to the harsh environmental conditions. As such, they are also more sensitive to the various impacts of the Anthropocene. For this reason, mountain regions may serve as sentinels of change and provide ideal ecosystems for studying climate and global change impacts on biodiversity. We here review different facets of anthropogenic impacts on mountain freshwater ecosystems. We put particular focus on micropollutants and their distribution and redistribution due to hydrological extremes, their direct influence on water quality and their indirect influence on ecosystem health via changes of freshwater species and their interactions. We show that those changes may drive pathogen establishment in new environments with harmful consequences for freshwater species, but also for the human population. Based on the reviewed literature, we recommend reconstructing the recent past of anthropogenic impact through sediment analyses, to focus efforts on small, but highly productive waterbodies, and to collect data on the occurrence and variability of microorganisms, biofilms, plankton species and key species, such as amphibians due to their bioindicator value for ecosystem health and water quality. The newly gained knowledge can then be used to develop a comprehensive framework of indicators to robustly inform policy and decision making on current and future risks for ecosystem health and human well-being.
Responses of Freshwater Ecosystems to Global Change: Research Progress and Outlook

Abstract:Global change has already posed a serious threat to different freshwater ecosystems by raising water temperatures, changing precipitation patterns and water flow conditions, enhancing species invasion, and increasing extreme events. In order to identify the major works carried out and highlights of the outcomes of research in freshwater ecology in the context of global change, we conducted literature search and analysis of papers published during 1900–2018 via Web of Science. In this review, the major researches in freshwater ecology in the context of global change are categorized into: (1) the effects of various global change factors on individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems; (2) changes in biogeochemical cycles of ecosystems in the process of global change; and (3) adaptation strategies of freshwater ecosystems to global changes. Over the past 10–15 years, research in freshwater ecosystems and global change progressed rapidly and showed breakthroughs in the following aspects: (1) elucidated the response processes and mechanisms of the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems to global climate change, in particular rising water temperatures; (2) revealed that freshwater ecosystems (wetlands, lakes, rivers, etc.) are important components of the global carbon cycle, such that under the influence of global change factors organic carbon burial decreased and mineralization rate increased. In future research, it is necessary to strengthen the systematic observations and integration of the total elements of freshwater ecosystems, to conduct research on carbon transport and transformation processes mediated by the river-connected multi-systems, and to strengthen basic theoretical research for uncovering the adaptation mechanisms of freshwater ecosystems to global change.
Incorporating Implicit Information to Disentangle the Impacts of Hydropower Dams and Climate Change on Basin‐Scale Fish Habitat Distribution

Abstract:Understanding how cold‐water and warm‐water fish cope with various stressors such as climate change and dam construction is crucial for the conservation of freshwater fish ecosystems. This study proposes to incorporate the information on dam impact implicitly existing in the species presence data in different periods to disentangle the impacts of hydroelectric dams and climate change on cold‐water and warm‐water fish habitat distribution in the upper Yangtze River basin. The loss of freshwater fish habitats, exacerbated by climate change and dam constructions, poses a critical environmental concern. The upper Yangtze River basin, noted for its abundant fish fauna and concentrated dam development, serves as a crucial locale for investigating the impacts of climate shifts and dam construction. This study aims to disentangle the impacts of hydroelectric dams and climate change on fish habitat distribution by analyzing species presence data across different periods. Species distribution models were constructed using Maxent for Coreius guichenoti (a warm‐water endangered fish) and Schizopygopsis malacanthus (a cold‐water endangered fish). The model accuracy was assessed using the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic. Habitat distribution modeling and prediction for the pre‐dam period (1970–2000) and post‐dam period (2001–2020), as well as future climate change under two shared socioeconomic pathways scenarios, were conducted. The impacts of climate change and dam construction on the habitat suitability of two fish species were quantified. The results revealed dam construction predominantly diminished habitat suitability and range, with high‐suitability habitats in the post‐dam period decreasing by 56.3% (720.18 km) and 67.0% (1665.52 km) for the two fishes, respectively. Climate change would enhance the habitat suitability of Coreius guichenoti, while it would decrease the habitat suitability of Schizopygopsis malacanthus. The impact of dam construction is greater that of climate change for them. This study underscores the profound impacts of dam construction on fish habitats, particularly for cold‐water species, and highlights the critical need for habitat restoration in sustainable hydropower development. Our method of disentangling these factors also provides a new approach to evaluating environmental impacts in large river basins.
