Abstract:Through a new contour-specific interpolation algorithm, high fidelity, grid-based, digital terrain models (DTMs) are generated from contour lines digitized by an electronic raster scanner. Starting from DTM data, drainage lines and related divides are automatically identified by means of a set of procedures which also calculates the fundamental geomorphologic and hydrologic parameters of the basin, such as stream-line order, magnitude and length, sub-basin area, perimeter and shape. These techniques find useful application in many fields, ranging from theoretical geomorphology/hydrology to the evaluation of environmental resources and constraints.
