Abstract:This state-of-the-art article reviews the literature on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) – enseignement d’une matière par l’intégration d’une langue étrangère (EMILE) – through an analytical lens. Since its inception in the 1990s, CLIL has evolved and become part of the educational literature as a dual-focused and multi-dimensional educational approach. CLIL is not only about using an additional language (AL) (e.g., foreign, autochthonous, heritage, second language) as a medium to teach subject content. The approach also aims to build and reinforce learners’ knowledge of other disciplines while using the language creatively to solve problems and develop critical thinking. Some research evidence has indicated that CLIL practices vary according to context, curricular constraints, and available teaching force. This multi-dimensionality and diverse implementations of CLIL have led to misunderstandings and what CLIL is and is not have been the topic of countless debates. An accurate description of CLIL would not be possible without understanding its historicity and the reasons for its emergence. CLIL now represents an approach that integrates language and content teaching in a variety of language learning and bilingual education contexts. CLIL was not created out of thin air. Its creation was influenced by a multitude of factors such as (a) the historical, political, epistemological and societal influences of the 1980s, (b) research on second language acquisition, (c) current theories of learning and, (d) educational philosophies on languages and approaches to language teaching that drew on postmodern views that emerged in the 1980s.

CLIL: An Overview

Abstract:In this chapter, we first describe the origins of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) as an educational approach that emerged in the mid-1990s under a European multilingual policy aimed at enabling citizens to use three European languages functionally. Secondly, we discuss the theories underpinning CLIL, and explore the definitions of CLIL, problematising the varieties of definitions that blur the grasp of a clear methodology in CLIL. Thirdly features of CLIL such as the 4Cs (Coyle et al., CLIL: Content and language integrated learning. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2010) and a discussion of how language is defined in CLIL are presented. The last section discusses the different array of research and how they have mushroomed in areas of education, linguistics, and psychology. Finally, the chapter closes with summaries of each chapter that reflect the unique contexts in which CLIL is implemented in nine countries across the globe: Japan, Spain, Colombia, Taiwan, Australia, Austria, USA, Argentina, and Brazil (countries presented in order as they appear in the volume).

Abstract:Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a dynamic educational approach that holds the potential to enhance language proficiency, content knowledge acquisition, and academic achievement among students. By integrating language learning with subject content, CLIL provides students with immersive and meaningful learning experiences that facilitate communicative competence, critical thinking skills, and intercultural awareness. Discussions surrounding CLIL implementation have emphasized its potential to transform language education and promote multilingualism in diverse educational contexts. Key findings from research on CLIL suggest that participation in CLIL programs can lead to improvements in students' language proficiency across various linguistic skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Additionally, CLIL facilitates deeper comprehension and retention of subject matter by providing authentic contexts for learning and promoting interdisciplinary connections. Students participating in CLIL programs demonstrate comparable or even superior levels of content knowledge acquisition compared to those in traditional subject-based instruction, highlighting the effectiveness of CLIL in promoting academic success and critical thinking skills. However, the success of CLIL implementation hinges on various factors, including teacher preparation, institutional support, and resource allocation. Educators play a central role in the success of CLIL programs, requiring specialized training and ongoing professional development to effectively integrate language and content instruction. Institutional support is essential for creating conducive environments for CLIL implementation, while adequate resources are critical for optimizing learning experiences and addressing the diverse needs of learners.

CLIL: the approach for the future?

Abstract:The aim of this article is to explore the potential of CLIL as a key approach in the future of English language teaching. Issues related to the different roles of teachers -including teacher training- and to the school specific subjects have been discussed . We have also focused our attention on the relationship between this approach and culture. The role of language in CLIL and the implementation of different modes of assessment are also mentioned. Material selection and adaptation is analysed in the light of CLIL´s principles. The analysis of these points leads us to provide a series of requisites which are to be met if we want the CLIL approach to improve out teaching practices and our students learning experiences.

Abstract:This article presents an overview of the literature relating to the effects of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach on the process of language and content acquisition. The overview is divided into five sections and the effects of CLIL on the students’ language system is described according to four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening, vocabulary and grammar). It is stated that while CLIL leads to a general improvement in relation to language proficiency, there are also some observations proving that certain language areas (e.g. syntax, pragmatics) are unaffected. Abstract:This paper focuses on a dedicated Content and Language Integrated Leaning (CLIL) authoring tool and repository of ready-made materials created within the EU-funded CLIL Open Online Learning (COOL) project, CLILstore, and its two integral components: Multidict (a multilingual multiple-dictionary interface) and Wordlink (a tool that allows all the words on a website to become automatically linked to sundry dictionaries in various language pairs). The validity of these tools and a discussion on how teacher training courses that focus on the use of CLILstore can become helpful to develop CLIL skills, and how CLILstore was helpful in achieving this, close the article.

Abstract:In the acronym CLIL, the “i” refers to the integration of both content and language objectives, also referred to as “dual focus”. In order to realise this dual focus at least three aspects need consideration: agreeing on the meaning of dual focus, making explicit how teachers can collaborate to achieve it in their classes, and examining what content and language can be covered to enact dual focus (Halbach, 2014). Contrary to the unquestioned role of language as the vehicle for content learning, the role of language teachers and their collaboration with the subject teacher remain vague. Therefore, a systematic literature study, based on 71 relevant studies, has been conducted to answer the research question: What does dual focus in a CLIL context entail? More specifically, the following aspects have been examined: (1) How has dual focus been defined in the literature?, (2) How can teacher collaboration, outside the classroom, strengthen the dual focus?, and (3) What does dual focus imply, inside the classroom, for curriculum and planning regarding language and content covered in CLIL subject and language courses? The findings allow to better contextualise the concept of dual focus, by identifying two main clusters of parameters: (1) outside the classroom: collaboration between subject teachers and language teachers for planning, execution and evaluation of dual focus, (2) approaches to language and content to co-stimulate dual focus inside the classroom. We hope these results can provide CLIL researchers and practitioners with a clearer conceptual basis to frame dual approach in CLIL contexts.

One of these methods is content and language integrated learning (CLIL). It refers to ''both content-based instruction and immersion education by virtue of its Dual focus on language and content'' (Dalton-Puffer,2011,p.182).CLIL is an approach for learning content through foreign language. It can provide opportunities for learners to use their new language skill. It is a competence-based teaching approach which refers to European education systems. The idea is to teach the subject and the language simultaneously. CLIL encourages the use of curricula which promotes the right interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity , communication ,and language abilities (Schumacher.nd).CLIL instruction changes teacher-centered classroom into student-centered classroom. So ,it leads to more innovation and motivation than traditional instruction. Coyle(2010) claimed that CLIL is not a form of language education or subject education. In fact, it is an innovative combination of both.Marsh (2002) believed that CLIL teachers can pr ovide optimal condition for students' communication. They should be proficient enough in that content area, and they should know the foreign language very well. Abstract:In a world of permanent change, traditional language teaching methods do not solve the communicative needs in foreign languages that favor knowledge and adaptation to changing educational contexts. The CLIL method is widely used to develop skills both in the learning language and in other areas of knowledge, it allows for the strengthening of teaching capacities to assume the teaching of contents of the different subjects in a foreign language. The objective of this bibliographic review is to collect significant and existing information on the CLIL method and contribution of this method in the educational field. The documentary descriptive approach of recent research related to the subject of study is used, based on the theoretical foundations of bilingual education. The literature review shows that by teaching the foreign language as a vehicle to instruct content from other subjects, students understand the need to learn the language to seize the knowledge of the subject and allows teachers to explore their own teaching context, reflect and identify factors that can improve their teaching practice, especially in the inclusion of writing activities in English.

Abstract:It is not surprising that as we come upon the thirtieth anniversary of the birth of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), this young pedagogical approach is still a complicated phenomenon, with a wide variety of issues in every aspect of education remaining to be addressed. CLIL assessment is one of them. Although over a decade has passed since Coyle et al. (2010) necessitated an explicit understanding of the assessment process in CLIL, “the variety and depth of issues that remain on the CLIL agenda suggest more research on CLIL assessment is indeed needed before future research can offer clear and workable solutions for both teachers and students” (De Angelis, 2021, p. 32). To this end, the book entitled Assessment and Learning in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Classrooms: Approaches and Conceptualisations is a timely response, both in scope and usefulness. It is a successful compilation of papers, which link various theoretical perspectives with different research paradigms and feature the discussion of classroom assessment aimed at improving the quality standard of education. The value of this volume is undeniable, and both researchers and educators can benefit from it, with a dialectical relationship established between research and classroom practices.

Abstract:RELC Journal, Volume 53, Issue 2, Page 355-370, August 2022. Arising in Europe in the early 1990s, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has become a popular educational approach. CLIL involves a dual focus on content and language learning with an additional language used as the medium of instruction. Although CLIL has received much attention and spread widely around the world, there is limited discussion that critically examines CLIL in relation to its core construct of integration between content and language learning. In particular, the phrasing of 'content and language integrated learning' gestures towards viewing language and content as separate entities. With these fundamental issues in mind, we discuss ways in which translanguaging pedagogies can provide a fruitful direction towards a critical integration of content and language learning in multilingual settings. With a view to contributing to a dynamic integration of content and language learning, we argue that CLIL pedagogies informed by translanguaging allow fluidity in meaning-making practices and critically re-examine the construct of language in CLIL. This approach responds to recent calls for more critical approaches to CLIL in order to challenge 'English-only'/target-language-only pedagogies, 'native-(English-)speakerism', and unequal power relations between content and language teachers in many CLIL programs. Implications of this approach to CLIL classrooms in diverse settings are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract CLIL focuses on the integration of content learning and additional language learning. However, it is increasingly recognized that the re/presentation and communication of discipline-specific content involve not only language, but also other semiotic modes (such as visuals and gestures). This is accelerated by the advancement of digital technologies and multiplicity of communication channels in recent years. This article points out the urgent need to revisit and reconceptualize the roles of “language” in CLIL. It argues that, to prepare students for the multimodal communication landscape in today’s societies and to truly value their linguistic and semiotic diversity in learning, the “language” dimension in CLIL needs to be reconceptualized as a multimodal dimension, and CLIL classroom practices need to adopt an updated pedagogy of multiliteracies ( New London Group, 1996 ) rather than focusing on “mere language” practice. The article reviews the recent development of theories and studies of multimodality and trans-semiotics and discusses their implications for what to teach and how to teach in today’s CLIL classrooms. It proposes the notions of translanguaging and trans-semiotizing to emphasize a dynamic and dialogic process of meaning (co)making process drawing on multiple linguistic and semiotic resources to enable students to both gain access to and critically engage in meaning/knowledge co-making/co-design. Ultimately, it aims at reconceiving CLIL to contribute to a more equitable school and classroom culture.

Abstract:Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a popular teaching approach that is being enthusiastically adopted across Japan (Ikeda, M. 2019. "CLIL in Comparison with PPP: A Revolution in ELT by Competency-Based Language Education." In Innovation in Language Teaching and Learning: The Case of Japan, edited by H. Reinders, R. Hayo, and S. Nakamura, 23–45. Palgrave Learning). CLIL is built on a 4Cs framework: Content, communication, cognition and culture (Coyle, D. 2007. "Content and Language Integrated Learning: Towards a Connected Research Agenda for CLIL Pedagogies." International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism 10 (5): 543–562), addressing and nurturing all four domains. While CLIL has since extended its tenets beyond the 4Cs and now adopts a more holistic, integrated, multimodal pluriliteracies perspective (Meyer, O., D. Coyle, A. Halbach, K. Schuck, and T. Ting. 2015. "A Pluriliteracies Approach to Content and Language Integrated Learning – Mapping Learner Progression in Knowledge Construction and Meaning-Making." Language, Culture and Curriculum 28 (1): 41–57; Meyer, O., and D. Coyle. 2017. "Pluriliteracies Teaching for Learning: Conceptualizing Progression for Deeper Learning in Literacies Development." European Journal of Applied Linguistics 5 (2): 199–222), the 4Cs ideals are still integral in understanding CLIL, and in this paper the author extends its importance and suggests the addition of the fifth C, that of criticality. Without the fifth C, CLIL remains a contentious teaching approach in Japan, given that it is framed within neoliberal goals and discourse. In the current framework, language is deemed largely as a tool that allows one to cultivate the four domains, assuring language/content learning and possibly socio-economic advancement. However, as is, incongruencies in ideologies and conceptualizations conveyed via different languages are not taken up sufficiently, and what's more, problematized and challenged. This paper addresses this lack and calls for the fifth C to make CLIL in Japan an even more robust, holistic and meaningful language teaching approach.

Abstract:Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) aims to unify linguistic and extra-linguistic goals. However, as research indicates [e.g. Lyster 2007. Learning and Teaching Languages through Content. A Counterbalanced Approach. Amsterdam: John Benjamins], it is still searching for an optimal balance between linguistic and content gains as learners do not, typically, demonstrate productive grammar skills on a par with their content knowledge, lexical repertoire and receptive skills [Tedick and Cammarata 2012. “Content and Language Integration in K-12 Contexts: Student Outcomes, Teacher Practices, and Stakeholder Perspectives.” Foreign Language Annals 45 (S1): S28–S53. doi:10.111/j.1944-9720.2012.01178.x.]. The aim of the paper is to outline a possible solution to the problem by proposing content-based structured input (CBSI) as a means of balancing linguistic and extra-linguistic gains in CLIL. As hypothesized, CLIL may lead to the processing of both content and form, provided that input is structured in such a way that subject matter becomes accessible to the learner only through the analysis of the target language structure. As assumed, this should reinforce the positive effects found for structured input [e.g. VanPatten 2015a. “Foundations of Processing Instruction.” International Review of Applied Linguistics 53 (2): 91–109. doi:10.1515/iral-2015-0005] with those observed for content learning [e.g. Dalton-Puffer 2007. Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the spread of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) through a number of lenses. It argues that the supporters and promoters of CLIL position it as a near-panacea and attribute to it a large number of benefits, not all of which are supported by research. Looking at the issues arising from recent attempts to define CLIL, the paper proposes a distinction between weak and strong CLIL. The paper points to the lacunae in the research into CLIL, and suggests that these gaps are the result of educational policies that privilege a second language over other curricular subjects. Looking at the contexts where CLIL seems to succeed, as well as places where such teaching has been acknowledged to fail, it emerges that success is often connected to a high level of student selection on a number of criteria, as well as a high level of investment in teachers and teaching, and that CLIL often privileges those students who are already high achievers both in language and content. The paper then looks at the way in which the spread of CLIL policies can be understood through theories of policy borrowing and educational transfer.

The trade-off between STEM knowledge acquisition and language learning in short-term CLIL implementations

Abstract:Bilingual education could solve many challenges introduced by an increasingly internationalised education system. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), in particular, may equip students with the necessary cultural and communicative skills to succeed in today's academic environment. However, it is not yet clear how CLIL can be employed effectively in short-term educational contexts where full-term bilingual programmes are not feasible. We designed and assessed a one-day CLIL module for ninth graders at our university's gene-technology lab. The assessment of our module with 252 grammar school students indicates that a CLIL module does not achieve the same learning success as an equivalent non-CLIL module. Even with additional language scaffolding material, full access to online dictionaries, and the availability of crucial workbook passages in their native language, CLIL students could not achieve the same short-term content learning success. We consequently argue that more attention should be paid to the inherent trade-off between language and content learning when carrying out short-term CLIL programmes. Moreover, we caution against using only content and language scaffolding to mediate this trade-off.

Abstract:This article focuses on a key issue for the holistic education of the young child in the bilingual classroom: the optimal development of social and emotional competence when learning takes place in another language. Social and emotional learning (SEL) has been referred to as “the substance of education itself” by the National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development (2019, p. 6) and research shows that the beneficial effects on the wellbeing of young children are deep-reaching and long-lasting. The recent growth of bilingual education in early childhood has propelled Content and Integrated Learning (CLIL) to the forefront of teacher training, methodology, and research into the teaching and learning processes of young children in bilingual classrooms. However, there is a dearth of research investigating the development of SEL in early CLIL. In this context, this article reviews and brings together existing literature of SEL and CLIL and argues that the main tenets of both are highly compatible. Examination of research highlights the key role played by classroom climate for the effective implementation of SEL through CLIL, and the challenges faced through an absence of specific legislation and teacher training. Finally, this article proposes how pedagogical strategies might be successfully established within the lower and pre-primary CLIL classroom that are mutually beneficial to both the development of bilingual education and young children’s social and emotional wellbeing.
Using Genially and Kahoot for Implementing CLIL in EFL Higher Education

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the impact of the content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach supported by the use of Genially and Kahoot in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching in a university setting. It also sought to determine students’ perceptions regarding the implementation of this approach. The participants were 60 EFL pre-service and in-service teachers, comprising 19 males and 41 females. The study followed a mixed-method approach including the administration of online diagnostic and perception questionnaires. Furthermore, focus group sessions and observation checklists were employed to document participants’ reactions during CLIL instruction. The implementation involved designing activities using Kahoot and Genially to create interactive quizzes. Collaborative tasks were employed to foster communication among students. Lessons followed a structured sequence, including pre-assessment tasks, interactive lesson design, and final assessment with feedback activities. The findings evidenced that the integration of both Genially and Kahoot with the CLIL approach significantly boosts student motivation and engagement. They also facilitate collaborative work among students, fostering a supportive learning community. Abstract:This article offers insights into the knowledge, skills and attitudes medical educators need to teach effectively to culturally diverse cohorts of medical students. “CLIL in Medical Education: Reaching for Tools to Teach Effectively in English in a Multicultural and Multilingual Learning Space” (CLILMED), an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, designed a profile to assist medical educators in the process of intentional goal-setting and self-reflection around their pedagogy, language and culture. It is the pluricultural outcomes of education that will be addressed here, since favouring the development of knowledge, attitudes and skills related to otherness, plurality and diversity have a direct impact on the quality of healthcare provision (Bradshaw, 2019; Corbett, 2011; Tiwary et al., 2019). Understanding what competences medical educators need in an intercultural classroom greatly influences their ability to intentionally design, implement and develop their teaching. The CLILMED Glocal Competence Profile for Medical Educators, centred around the intended pluricultural outcomes of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), is intended to clarify and support lifelong learning for helping medical professionals interact effectively and appropriately with students from other linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:This research reviews and applies Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the framework of teaching sciences in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It encompasses the need to tailor English language acquisition to the matters and concepts of sciences. The scope was 114 seventh-grade students of the bilingual program at Centro Educativo Internacional La Moderna. The research aims to enhance language acquisition and boost science comprehension through an integrated approach. The outcomes score favorable influence of the CLIL implementation on students' academic achievements, attitudes, and enthusiasm. The findings substantiate the advantages of integrating language and content in promoting language skills while facilitating the grasping of intricate scientific notions. The study contributes to knowledge of the practical deployment of CLIL techniques and their implications on teaching science. Besides, elucidates the potential of CLIL as a pedagogical instrument to enrich language proficiency and science comprehension concurrently. Thus, fosters a holistic educational experience for science learners in EFL educational programs.
