Abstract:Graphene is an ideal 2D material system bridging electronic and photonic devices. It also breaks the fundamental speed and size limits by electronics and photonics, respectively. Graphene offers multiple functions of signal transmission, emission, modulation, and detection in a broad band, high speed, compact size, and low loss. Here, we have a brief view of graphene based functional devices at microwave, terahertz, and optical frequencies. Their fundamental physics and computational models were discussed as well.

Abstract:Graphene means one layer of carbon atoms,one of truly two-dimensional crystals.Some very pe- culiar properties of graphene,such as bipolar supercurrent,chiral tunneling of relativistic particles,absence of Ander- son localization,anomalous quantum Hall effect,are summarized in this paper.These properties of graphene open new perspectives for carbon-based electronics which may replace Si-based electronics in CMOS chips.Its other potential ap- plications are also described.

Abstract:The review article is an excursus into the world publications describing the properties of graphene, methods of synthesis of it and variety of its application fields. The paper describes in detail the structure of graphene as well as the methods for its fabrication: micromechanical cleavage, chemical stratification, epitaxial growth, and chemical gas-phase deposition, including their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the review contains information on the electronic, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties of graphene, which lend its uniqueness. Due to its unique properties, graphene and its modified quasi-two-dimensional structures are the objects of increased scientific interest in various fields of science, such as energy, electronics, optoelectronics, medicine, bioengineering, aerospace, aviation, ecology, materials engineering, etc. In order to expand the journal readership among the physicists, chemists, and materials scientists, who are not deep specialists in graphene science, the style of the present review is somewhere close to popular science one.

For these purposes, graphene materials usually have to be fabricated or assembled into desired micro-/nano-architectures for tuning and/or controlling their electrical, optical, mechanical, chemical or electrochemical properties. In this feature article, we review recent achievements in the studies of three-dimensional (3D) graphene architectures. The methodology for preparing these 3D graphene micro-/nano-architectures and their potential applications have been summarized.

Abstract:This review examines the properties of graphene from an experimental perspective. The intent is to review the most important experimental results at a level of detail appropriate for new graduate students who are interested in a general overview of the fascinating properties of graphene. While some introductory theoretical concepts are provided, including a discussion of the electronic band structure and phonon dispersion, the main emphasis is on describing relevant experiments and important results as well as some of the novel applications of graphene. In particular, this review covers graphene synthesis and characterization, field-effect behavior, electronic transport properties, magnetotransport, integer and fractional quantum Hall effects, mechanical properties, transistors, optoelectronics, graphene-based sensors, and biosensors. This approach attempts to highlight both the means by which the current understanding of graphene has come about and some tools for future contributions.

Abstract:Graphene, as an intermediate phase between fullerene and carbon nanotube, has aroused much interests among the scientific community due to its outstanding electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties.With excellent electrical conductivity of 6000 S/cm, which is independent on chirality, graphene is a promising material for high-performance nanoelectronics, transparent conductor, as well as polymer composites. On account of its Young’s Modulus of 1 TPa and ultimate strength of 130 GPa, isolated graphene sheet is considered to be among the strongest materials ever measured. Comparable with the single-walled carbon nanotube bundle,graphene has a thermal conductivity of 5000 W/（m·K）, which suggests a potential application of graphene in polymer matrix for improving thermal properties of the graphene/polymer composite. Furthermore, graphene exhibits a very high surface area, up to a value of 2630 m~2/g. All of these outstanding properties suggest a wide application for this nanometer-thick, two-dimensional carbon material. This review article presents an overview of the significant advancement in graphene research: preparation, functionalization as well as the properties of graphene will be discussed. In addition, the feasibility and potential applications of graphene in areas, such as sensors, nanoelectronics and nanocomposites materials, will also be reviewed.

Abstract:Due to the outstanding physicochemical properties arising from its truly two-dimensional (2D) planar structure with a single-atom thickness, graphene exhibits great potential for use in sensors, catalysts, electrodes, and in biological applications, etc. With further developments in the theoretical understanding and assembly techniques, graphene should enable great changes both in scientific research and practical industrial applications. By the look of development, it is of fundamental and practical significance to translate the novel physical and chemical properties of individual graphene nanosheets into the macroscale by the assembly of graphene building blocks into macroscopic architectures with structural specialities and functional novelties. The combined features of a 2D planar structure and abundant functional groups of graphene oxide (GO) should provide great possibilities for the assembly of GO nanosheets into macroscopic architectures with different macroscaled shapes through various assembly techniques under different bonding interactions. Moreover, macroscopic graphene frameworks can be used as ideal scaffolds for the incorporation of functional materials to offset the shortage of pure graphene in the specific desired functionality. The advantages of light weight, supra-flexibility, large surface area, tough mechanical strength, and high electrical conductivity guarantee graphene-based architectures wide application fields. This critical review mainly addresses recent advances in the design and fabrication of graphene-based macroscopic assemblies and architectures and their potential applications. Herein, we first provide overviews of the functional macroscopic graphene materials from three aspects, i.e., 1D graphene fibers/ribbons, 2D graphene films/papers, 3D network-structured graphene monoliths, and their composite counterparts with either polymers or nano-objects. Then, we present the promising potential applications of graphene-based macroscopic assemblies in the fields of electronic and optoelectronic devices, sensors, electrochemical energy devices, and in water treatment. Last, the personal conclusions and perspectives for this intriguing field are given.

Abstract:Graphene is a key material for a new generation of electronic devices with unique electrical properties. In this review, current advances in the preparation, tailoring, and modification of graphene to obtain high‐quality graphene with precisely controlled patterning and specific functional groups are summarized. Graphene is a 2D material with fruitful electrical properties, which can be efficiently prepared, tailored, and modified for a variety of applications, particularly in the field of optoelectronic devices thanks to its planar hexagonal lattice structure. To date, graphene has been prepared using a variety of bottom–up growth and top–down exfoliation techniques. To prepare high‐quality graphene with high yield, a variety of physical exfoliation methods, such as mechanical exfoliation, anode bonding exfoliation, and metal‐assisted exfoliation, have been developed. To adjust the properties of graphene, different tailoring processes have been emerged to precisely pattern graphene, such as gas etching and electron beam lithography. Due to the differences in reactivity and thermal stability of different regions, anisotropic tailoring of graphene can be achieved by using gases as the etchant. To meet practical requirements, further chemical functionalization at the edge and basal plane of graphene has been extensively utilized to modify its properties. The integration and application of graphene devices is facilitated by the combination of graphene preparation, tailoring, and modification. This review focuses on several important strategies for graphene preparation, tailoring, and modification that have recently been developed, providing a foundation for its potential applications.

Abstract:Innovative breakthroughs in fundamental research and industrial applications of graphene material have made its mass and low-cost production as a necessary step toward its real world applications. This one-atom thick crystal of carbon, gathers a set of unique physico-chemical properties, ranging from its extreme mechanical behavior to its exceptional electrical and thermal conductivities, which are making graphene as a serious alternative to replace many conventional materials for various applications. In this review paper, we highlight the most important experimental results on the synthesis of graphene material, its emerging properties with reference to its smart applications. We discuss the possibility to successfully integrating graphene directly into device, enabling thereby the realization of a wide range of applications, including actuation, photovoltaic, thermoelectricity, shape memory, self-healing, electrorheology, and space missions. The future outlook of graphene is also considered and discussed.

Abstract:Graphene, as a rising star in the field of nanomaterials, possesses a unique planar structure and exceptional electronic, mechanical, and optical properties. The material has attracted tremendous interest not only for its intrinsic properties but also promising application opportunities in a wide range of technologies and markets. This review specifically summarizes recent research advancements of graphene in the areas of biotechnology and biomedicine. The bio-application opportunities lie in the unique attributes of graphene, i.e., (1) its nano-scale structure that allows for bio-compatibility, (2) biofunctionalization of graphene for biological recognition, (3) its mechanical, electronic and optical properties for bioimaging and external stimulus driven therapeutics, and (4) its functionalities for tissue and genetic engineering. The review mainly highlights eight subjects including (1) biocompatibility, cytotoxicity and biofunctionalization, (2) antibacterial activity, (3) biosensing and immunosensing, (4) bioimaging, (5) genetic engineering, (6) drug delivery, (7) cancer phototherapy, and (8) tissue engineering. Perspectives and future challenges in this rapidly developing area are also discussed.

Abstract:The invention of graphene, as a two-dimensional (2D) atomic layered material, has created enormous scientific revolutions in materials science. As a result, there are a variety of 2D materials came into limelight and intervening the existing technology. Today, one of the focusing issues in graphene technology is the development of functionalized (doped) graphene monolayers since the pristine graphene is chemically inert, hydrophobic and zero band gap material. As a result, the potential applications of graphene are limited to a few fields of science and technology. Surface functionalization, one of the typical approaches, is well-adopted for the development of functionalized graphene layers. In this scenario, we reviewed the latest advancements exclusively in the development of functionalized graphene layers, and exciting breakthroughs in graphene's science and technology. A brief history along with intrinsic properties of graphene is discussed in the introduction. Then, the methods adopted for the realization of functionalized graphene layers, and the impact of surface modification on their physical and chemical properties along with device performances are elaborately discussed. Finally, the review is summarized and outlined the perspectives of functionalized graphene layers in view of the development of multifunctional high-quality graphene layers for next-generation device applications.

Abstract:Graphene has a multitude of striking properties that make it an exceedingly attractive material for various applications, many of which will emerge over the next decade. However, one of the most promising applications lie in exploiting its peculiar electronic properties which are governed by its electrons obeying a linear dispersion relation. This leads to the observation of half integer quantum hall effect and the absence of localization. The latter is attractive for graphene-based field effect transistors. However, if graphene is to be the material for future electronics, then significant hurdles need to be surmounted, namely, it needs to be mass produced in an economically viable manner and be of high crystalline quality with no or virtually no defects or grains boundaries. Moreover, it will need to be processable with atomic precision. Hence, the future of graphene as a material for electronic based devices will depend heavily on our ability to piece graphene together as a single crystal and define its edges with atomic precision. In this progress report, the properties of graphene that make it so attractive as a material for electronics is introduced to the reader. The focus then centers on current synthesis strategies for graphene and their weaknesses in terms of electronics applications are highlighted.

Abstract:<p>Graphene is a single carbon layer of zero bandgap without edges and basal plane fluctuations. Engineering such infinite plane structure to finite size or appropriate structure will lead to different electronic structures, opening the bandgap of graphene and further achieving the target-specific applications. Multidisciplinary research efforts have been devoted to the development of diverse low-dimensional or hierarchical structures as well novel functionalities. To gain insights into the further development, this review comprehensively covers the recent progress of different graphene architectures categorized by dimensionality and their applications in electronics, biosciences, energy storage and conversion as well as environmental remediation. Although these materials are made of the same building block, they exhibit distinct properties and behaviors depending on how the carbon atoms in the graphene planar are bonded and on how the graphene sheets are functionalized to form larger structures. In order to highlight the structural characteristics of different dimensional graphene materials, this review independently starts with the properties of one kind of architecture, followed by various synthesis methods as well as potential applications. Finally, some insights and outlooks on the future directions and foreseeable challenges for graphene materials are also suggested as concluding remarks based on our own understanding.</p>

Abstract:Graphene,a one-atom-thick and two-dimensional(2D) planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice,has been a subject of extensive academic and commercial interest for potential use as the active materials in the fields of materials science,chemistry,physics and engineering due to its outstanding electronic,photonic,thermal and mechanical properties.It can be wrapped up into 0D fullerenes,rolled into 1D nanotubes or stacked into 3D graphite.In this paper the important aspects of graphenes,including preparation methods,chemical modification and potential applications,have been highlighted in detail.Basically graphenes can be prepared by micromechanical exfoliation,epitaxial growth on electrically insulating surfaces such as SiC,chemical vapor deposition,chemical synthesis and the creation of colloidal suspensions.By covalent or,non-covalent modification of graphenes,a large number of the intersting and promising functional materials have been prepared.Many challenges still remain.Future work should be focused on in-depth studies of graphene chemistry and materials science to provide a detailed understanding of the factors affecting the materials performance.
