Abstract:Using nanotechnology to develop new formulations of pesticides is considered a possible option in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and photostability of pesticides under various climatic conditions. In the present study, two novel nanoformulations (NFs) were successfully prepared based on nano-delivery systems for emamectin benzoate (EMB) by loading it on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SNPs) as carriers through a freeze-drying method. The synthesized nanoformulations were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results showed that SNPs and CNCs had a loading efficiency of 43.31% and 15.04% (w/w) for EMB, respectively, and could effectively protect EMB from photolysis under UV radiation. The LC50 values for EMB + SNPs, EMB + CNCs, and EMB commercial formulation against Phenacoccus solenopsis were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.31 μg/mL, respectively, indicating that both NFs were more effective than the EMB commercial formulation. This work seeks to develop new nano-carriers for potential applications of pesticides in plant protection, which will reduce the recommended dose of pesticides and thereby decrease the amount of pesticide residue in food and the environment.
Nanopesticide Formulation from Pyraclostrobin and Graphene Oxide as a Nanocarrier and Application in Controlling Plant Fungal Pathogens

Abstract:Efficient and environment-friendly nanopesticide delivery systems are critical for the sustainable development of agriculture. In this study, a graphene oxide nanocomposite was developed for pesticide delivery and plant protection with pyraclostrobin as the model pesticide. First, graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite was prepared through fast adsorption of pyraclostrobin onto graphene oxide with a maximum loading of 87.04%. The as-prepared graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite exhibited high stability during two years of storage, suggesting its high potential in practical application. The graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite could achieve temperature (25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C) and pH (5, 7 and 9) slow-release behavior, which overcomes the burst release of conventional pyraclostrobin formulation. Furthermore, graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite exhibited considerable antifungal activities against Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum both in vitro and in vivo. The cotoxicity factor assay revealed that there was a synergistic interaction when graphene oxide and pyraclostrobin were combined at the ratio of 1:1 against the mycelial growth of Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum with co-toxicity coefficient values exceeding 100 in vitro. The control efficacy of graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite was 71.35% and 62.32% against Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in greenhouse, respectively, which was higher than that of single graphene oxide and pyraclostrobin. In general, the present study provides a candidate nanoformulation for pathogenic fungal control in plants, and may also expand the application of graphene oxide materials in controlling plant fungal pathogens and sustainable agriculture.

Fabrication and application of carrier-free and carrier-based nanopesticides in pest management

Abstract:Pesticides are widely used for pest control to promote sustained and stable growth of agricultural production. However, indiscriminate pesticide usage poses a great threat to environmental and human health. In recent years, nanotechnology has shown the ability to increase the performance of conventional pesticides and has great potential for improving adhesion to crop foliage, solubility, stability, targeted delivery, and so forth. This review discusses two types of nanopesticides, namely, carrier-free nanopesticides and carrier-based nanopesticides, that can precisely release necessary and sufficient amounts of active ingredients. At first, the basic characterization and preparation methods of these two distinct types of nanopesticides are briefly summarized. Subsequently, current applications and future perspectives on scientific examples and strategies for promoting the usage efficacy and reducing the environmental risks of these nanopesticides were also described. Overall, nanopesticides can promote higher crop yields and lay the foundation for sustainable agriculture and global food security.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has provided a novel approach for the preparation of a safe and highly effective pesticide formulation. Thiazole-Zn, a widely used bactericide, was successfully prepared at nanoscale by an innovative approach of final synthesis process control. Its plausible formation mechanism based on restricted particle aggregation in a nanoreactor was elucidated. Then in order to assess the application performance of thiazole-Zn nanoparticle, the nanoformulation (NPF) was conveniently formulated. Interestingly, the physicochemical properties of NPF showed better than that of the commercial pesticide formulation (CPF) in dispersibility, wettability, spreadability, and stability. At the same time, the in vitro bioassay showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of NPF against Xanthomonas oryzae pv Oryzae (XOO), Xanthomonas oryzae pv Oryzicola (XOC), Erwinia carotovora subsp. Carotovora (Jones) Holland (ECC), and Erwinia chrysanthemi pv Zeae (ECZ) were 46.88, 93.75, 93.75, and 375.00 mg/L, respectively, whereas those of CPF were 93.75, 375.00, 375.00, and 875.00 mg/L, respectively. Therefore, NPF exhibited stronger antibacterial activity against the above-mentioned pathogens. Moreover, NPF was more effective to bacterial blight of rice than CPF in field trial. As a conclusion, nanotechnology for pesticides by synthesis process control will have a potential in improving the utilization efficiency and relieving the corresponding environmental pollution.

Abstract:In recent years, stimuli-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulations have drawn extensive as they show huge potential in the practical application of agriculture. Herein, a multifunctional composite nanocarrier was prepared by our group, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide (PNIPAm-GO), this is a temperature-responsive release pesticide formulation that can regulate pesticide release based on the temperature change. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was loaded on PNIPAm-GO nanocomposite carrier via a simple physisorption process and exhibited temperature-responsive controlled release performance leading to release of LC at a specified temperature and extended its persisted release time. In addition, the controlled-release pesticide formulations showed both good water solubility and dispersion stability while its anti-UV property. Furthermore, we also assessed the biological safety of and proved that PNIPAm-GO is non-toxic. The study of this temperature-responsive pesticide formulation has promoted the development of intelligent pesticide formulations to great extent.

Abstract:Pesticides are important inputs for enhancing crop productivity and preventing major biological disasters. However, more than 90% of pesticides run off into the environment and reside in agricultural products in the process of application as a result of the disadvantages of conventional pesticide formulation, such as the use of a harmful solvent, poor dispersion, dust drift, etc. In recent years, using nanotechnology to create novel formulations has shown great potential in improving the efficacy and safety of pesticides. The development of nano-based pesticide formulation aims at precise release of necessary and sufficient amounts of their active ingredients in responding to environmental triggers and biological demands through controlled release mechanisms. This paper discusses several scientific issues and strategies regarding the development of nano-based pesticide formulations: (i) construction of water-based dispersion pesticide nanoformulation, (ii) mechanism on leaf-targeted deposition and dose transfer of pesticide nanodelivery system, (iii) mechanism on increased bioavailability of nano-based pesticide formulation, and (iv) impacts of nanoformulation on natural degradation and biosafety of pesticide residues.

Abstract:Pesticides play a crucial role in ensuring food production and food security. Conventional pesticide formulations can not meet the current needs of social and economic development, and they also can not meet the requirements of green agriculture. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, safe, and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations to gradually replace old formulations which have high pollution and low efficacy. The rise of nanotechnology provides new possibilities for innovation in pesticide formulations. Through reasonable design and construction of an environmentally friendly pesticide delivery system (PDS) based on multifunctional nanocarriers, the drawbacks of conventional pesticides can be effectively solved, realizing a water-based, nanosized, targeted, efficient, and safe pesticide system. In the past five years, researchers in chemistry, materials science, botany, entomology, plant protection, and other fields are paying close attention to the research of nanomaterials based PDSs and nanopesticide formulations and have made certain research achievements. These explorations provide useful references for promoting the innovation of nanopesticides and developing a new generation of green and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations. This Perspective summarizes the recent advances of nanomaterials in PDSs and nanopesticide innovation, aiming to provide useful guidance for carrier selection, surface engineering, controlled release conditions, and application in agriculture.

Abstract:The use of various chemical substances to control pests, diseases, and weeds in the field is a necessary part of the agricultural development process in every country. While the application of pesticides can improve the quality and yield of crops, plant resistance and the harm caused by pesticide residues to the environment and humans have led to the search for greener and safer pesticide formulations to improve the current situation. In recent years, nanopesticides (NPts) have shown great potential in agriculture due to their high efficiency, low toxicity, targeting, resistance, and controlled slow release demonstrated in the experimental stage. Commonly used approaches to prepare NPts include the use of nanoscale metal materials as active ingredients (AI) (ingredients that can play a role in insecticide, sterilization and weeding) or the construction of carriers based on commonly used pesticides to make them stable in nano-sized form. This paper systematically summarizes the advantages and effects of NPts over conventional pesticides, analyzes the formation and functions of NPts in terms of structure, AI, and additives, and describes the mechanism of action of NPts. Despite the feasibility of NPts use, there is not enough comprehensive research on NPts, which must be supplemented by more experiments in terms of biotoxicology and ecological effects to provide strong support for NPts application.
Graphene powders as new contact nanopesticides: Revealing key parameters on their insecticidal activity for stored product insects

Abstract:The overuse and reliance on pesticides has caused insects to develop resistance with global concerns. To address this problem extensive research is directed to find new and sustainable alternatives using chemical-free and resistance-free solutions for pest control. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the insecticidal properties of several types of industrially produced graphene powder materials such as graphene and graphene oxide (GO) with micro- and nano size and different structural and chemical properties as new contact nanopesticides against three major stored grain insects: the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.), the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.)˙ and the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus Horn. Bioassays were performed using different concentrations, i.e., 0, 100, 500 and 1000 ppm of graphene powders on the mortality of selected adult insects recorded after 3, 7, 14, and 21 days of exposure and progeny production after 65 days. Results showed that graphene oxide (GO) has no insecticidal efficacy while graphene powders with nano-size particles showed significantly enhanced insecticidal performance compared to micron-size graphene powders. The observed insecticidal effects are explained by the higher probability that nano-sized graphene particles adhere on the insect body compared to large particles. The mortality is proposed as the result of physical mode of action of attached graphene nanoparticles causing stronger interruption of the protective cuticle layer, gas respiratory functions and faster mortality. The findings of this study revealed that it is important to select graphene materials with optimal structural and interfacial properties to achieve the highest insecticidal performance in potential development of a new generation of sustainable insecticides.
Size-dependent effect on controllable release and field insecticidal efficacy of diamide insecticide polylactic acid microspheres delivery systems against Ostrinia nubilalis

Abstract:New nano/microcarriers of pesticides represent a highly promising novel field for sustainable pest management. However, despite extensive laboratory research, few studies on the design and evaluation of nanopesticides for field applications exist. In this study, we present a straightforward and green synthetic method of ultrasonic-assisted and hydrogen-bonded self-assembly at the oil-water interface for the synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres encapsulating chlorantraniliprole (CAP), with precise control over the size of the microspheres. The resulting CAP-loaded PLA microspheres (CAP-PLA MS) exhibit both high pesticide encapsulation efficiency and stability in natural environments. It has been determined that non-Fickian diffusion mainly controls pesticide release, thus enabling dynamic control over molecular transport speeds. Importantly, our functional CAP-PLA MS demonstrates superior sustained pesticide release performance under both laboratory and field conditions while maintaining better exceptional insecticidal efficacy than normal CAP in controlling O. nubilalis at a concentration of 30 or 45 g/ha. Consequently, we propose that our functional PLA microspheres could serve as ideal pesticide carriers in the sustained treatment of O. nubilalis.
Temperature-Dependent Nanogel for Pesticide Smart Delivery with Improved Foliar Dispersion and Bioactivity for Efficient Control of Multiple Pests

Abstract:The use of nanomaterials and nanotechnology to construct a smart pesticide delivery system with target-oriented and controlled-release functions is important to increase the effective utilization rate and minimize environmental residue pollution. A temperature-dependent delivery system can modulate the release of pesticide with temperature to improve the efficacy and precision targeting. A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based nanogels with high deformability and tunable structure were successfully constructed for smart pesticide delivery and effective pest control. A lambda-cyhalothrin (LC)-loaded Pickering emulsion (LC@TNPE) with a stable gel-like network structure was further formed by the temperature-dependent nanogel to encapsule the pesticide. The foliar wettability, photostability, and controlled-release property of LC@TNPE were effectively enhanced compared to the commercial formulation because of the encapsulation and stabilization of nanogel. The release rate of LC positively correlated with temperature changes and thereby adapted to the trend of pest population increase at higher temperature. The LC@TNPE displayed improved control efficacy on multiple target pests including Plutella xylostella, Aphis gossypii, and Pieris rapae compared with the commercial suspension concentrate and microcapsule suspension, and it showed marked efficacy to control Pieris rapae for an extended duration even at a 40% reduced dosage. Furthermore, the safety was evaluated systematically on cells in vitro and with a nontarget organism. Studies confirmed that the system was relatively safe for HepG2 cells and aquatic organism zebrafish. This research provides an insight into creating an efficient and environmentally friendly pesticide nanoformulation for sustainable agriculture production.

Abstract:Fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, a native insect pest in tropical and subtropical America, has rapidly spread to most parts of China and become a major pest of corn and other crops since invading in early January 2019. As an emergency and important control measure, chemical control of S. frugiperda has the advantages of quick effect and low cost. However, long-term and large-scale use of pesticides might pollute the environment and increase pest resistance. By improving the control effect and reducing the dosage of chemical pesticides, graphene oxide (GO) is used synergistically with insecticides to increase control efficacy to achieve low-cost and sustainable management of insect pests as a new type of synergist. In this study, graphene oxide was compounded with insecticides to form nanocomposites. To clarify pest physiological responses, the laboratory toxicity of graphene oxide-insecticide nanocomposites was measured on the larvae of S. frugiperda. The results demonstrated that GO could enhance the activity of four selected pesticides: chlorantraniliprole (Chl), beta cypermethrin (Bet), methoxyhydrazide (Met) and spinetoram (Spi). Compared with pesticides alone, the toxicity of Chl-GO, Bet-GO, Met-GO and Spi-GO mixtures to the third instar larvae of S. frugiperda increased by 1.56, 1.54, 2.53 and 1.74 times, respectively. The easy preparation and higher bioactivity of GO-pesticide nanocomposites indicated their promising application potential in pest control.

Facile, Smart, and Degradable Metal–Organic Framework Nanopesticides Gated with Fe III -Tannic Acid Networks in Response to Seven Biological and Environmental Stimuli

Abstract:Nanopesticides were selected as one of the top 10 emerging technologies in chemistry that will change our world in 2019. Facile, smart, and degradable metal–organic framework MIL-101(FeIII) nanopesticides gated with FeIII-tannic acid (TA) networks are created using a universal strategy. The capping of the FeIII-TA network gatekeepers is instinctively oriented by the coordinatively unsaturated FeIII sites on the surfaces of the MIL-101(FeIII) nanocarriers; thus, their combination is perfectly matched. This is the first example that one smart gated nanoparticle is integrated with seven stimuli-responsive performances to meet the diverse controlled release of encapsulated cargos by the disassembly of the gatekeepers and/or the degradation of the nanocarriers. More importantly, each of the seven stimuli (acidic/alkaline pH, H2O2, glutathione, phosphates, ethylenediaminetetraacetate, and near-infrared light of sunlight) is closely related to the biological and natural environments of crops, and the biocompatible nanocarriers are eventually degraded against bioaccumulation even if the nanopesticides enter crops. These mechanisms of the stimuli-responsive controlled release are identified and clearly elaborated. It is found that the natural polyphenol can improve the wettability of aqueous droplets of nanopesticides on model hydrophobic foliage for pesticide adhesion and retention. The nanopesticides encapsulated with the fungicide tebuconazole show high fungicidal activities against pathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia solani (rice sheath blight) and Fusarium graminearum (wheat head blight); good safety on seed germination, seedling emergence, and plant height of wheat by seed dressing; and satisfactory control efficacy in wheat powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis in the greenhouse. Abstract:Nanopesticide is an important application of nanotechnology in the agriculture for the past 20 years, which has received significant attention in controlled release and targeted transport as well as reduced dosage, with sizes typically less than 100 nm and large relative surface area. Despite the great role played by nanopesticides in pest and disease control, their toxicological effects cannot be ignored. But the state of knowledge on the biotoxicological effects of nanopesticides is limited, particularly regarding to their environmental fate and behavior. Based on this situation, we discuss the characteristics and applications of five examples of nanopesticide formulations whose nanomaterials react with active ingredients; we analyze the behavior and ecotoxicity of nanopesticides in the environment, mainly in soil and the three aspects of toxic effects; and we discuss the issues that need attention in risk assessment and management. Although there are some challenges and concerns about nanopesticides, in the long run, nanopesticides are worthy of further study and have good prospects for development.

Abstract:In an effort to make pesticide use safer, more efficient, and sustainable, micro-/nanocarriers are increasingly being utilized in agriculture to deliver pesticide-active agents, thereby reducing quantities and improving effectiveness. In the use of nanopesticides, the choice to further design and prepare pesticide stimulus-responsive nanocarriers based on changes in the plant growth environment (light, temperature, pH, enzymes, etc.) has received more and more attention from researchers. Based on this, this paper examines recent advancements in nanomaterials for the design of stimulus-responsive micro-/nanocarriers. Smart and Sustainable Crop Protection: Design and Evaluation of a Novel α-Amylase-Responsive Nanopesticide for Effective Pest Control

Abstract:In this study, an α-amylase-responsive controlled-release formulation was developed by capping polydopamine onto β-cyclodextrin-modified abamectin-loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The prepared Aba@HMS@CD@PDA were subjected to characterization using various analytical techniques. The findings revealed that Aba@HMS@CD@PDA, featuring a loading rate of 18.8 wt %, displayed noteworthy release behavior of abamectin in the presence of α-amylase. In comparison to abamectin EC, Aba@HMS@CD@PDA displayed a significantly foliar affinity and improved rainfastness on lotus leaves. The results of field trail demonstrated a significantly higher control efficacy against Spodoptera litura Fabricius compared to abamectin EC at all concentrations after 7, 14, and 21 days of spaying, showcasing the remarkable persistence of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA. These results underscore the potential of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA as a novel and persistently effective strategy for sustainable on-demand crop protection. The application of nanopesticides can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of pesticide utilization, contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.
Improving the efficiency and environmental safety of emamectin benzoate through a pH-responsive metal-organic framework microencapsulation strategy

Abstract:Herein, we developed a technique for loading nanopesticides onto Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to control Spodoptera litura. The average short-axis length of the synthesized carrier emamectin benzoate@PCN-222 @hyaluronic acid (EB@PCN-222 @HA) was ∼40 nm, with an average long-axis length of ∼80 nm. This enabled the manipulation of its size, contact angle, and surface tension on the surface of leaves. Pesticide-loading capacity, determined via thermogravimetric analysis, was measured at ∼16 %. To ensure accurate pesticide release in the alkaline intestine of Spodoptera litura, EB@PCN-222 @HA was engineered to decompose under alkaline conditions. In addition, the carrier delayed the degradation rate of EB, enhancing EB's stability. Loading Nile red onto PCN-222 @HA revealed potential entry into the insect body through feeding, which was supported by bioassay experiments. Results demonstrated the sustained-release performance of EB@PCN-222 @HA, extending its effective duration. The impact of different carrier concentrations on root length, stem length, fresh weight, and germination rate of pakchoi and tomato were assessed. Promisingly, the carrier exhibited a growth-promoting effect on the fresh weight of both the crops. Furthermore, cytotoxicity experiments confirmed its safety for humans. In cytotoxicity assays, PCN-222 @HA showed minimal toxicity at concentrations up to 100 mg/L, with cell survival rates above 80 %. Notably, the EB@PCN-222 @HA complex demonstrated reduced cytotoxicity compared to EB alone, supporting its safety for human applications. This study presents a safe and effective approach for pest control using controlled-release pesticides with extended effective durations.
Development of Chlorantraniliprole and Lambda Cyhalothrin Double-Loaded Nano-Microcapsules for Synergistical Pest Control

Abstract:Nanotechnology could greatly improve global agricultural food production. Chlorantraniliprole and lambda cyhalothrin double-loaded nano-microcapsules were fabricated to enhance the control of pests by pesticides and improve the pesticide utilization efficiency. The nano-microcapsules were synthesized using a method involving the solid in oil in water encapsulation technique and solvent evaporation. The nano-microcapsules slowly and simultaneously released lambda cyhalothrin and chlorantraniliprole. The cumulative lambda cyhalothrin and chlorantraniliprole release rates at 40 h were 80% and 70%, respectively. Indoor Spodoptera frugiperda control tests indicated that the double-loaded nano-microcapsules were more toxic than lambda cyhalothrin water-dispersible granules, chlorantraniliprole water-dispersible granules, and a mixture of lambda cyhalothrin water-dispersible granules and chlorantraniliprole water-dispersible granules, indicating that the pesticides in the nano-microcapsules synergistically controlled Spodoptera frugiperda. The results indicated that pesticide nano-microcapsules with synergistic effects can be developed that can improve the effective pesticide utilization efficiency and pesticide bioavailability. This is a new idea for achieving environmentally intelligent pesticide delivery.
Sustainable lignin-modified epoxy nanocarriers for enhanced foliar insecticide efficacy and food safety

Abstract:Reducing pesticide residues while extending their efficacy period is a critical challenge in the development of controlled-release pesticides. This study focuses on loading avermectin onto lignin-modified epoxy resin nanocarriers via the creation of photostable nanocapsules (NCs) for evaluating their efficacy against Plutella xylostella. This study also assesses the NCs' resistance to water scour on plant leaves by comparing them with traditional preparations. These NCs feature a stable core-shell structure, an encapsulation efficiency of 92.90 % and slow-release properties. Compared to emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and microemulsion (ME) under UV irradiation, the loading of nanocarriers significantly prolonged the degradation time of avermectin by fivefold. The Nano-formula demonstrated enhanced insecticidal activity in comparison to traditional preparations. Field tests revealed that the efficacy of the NCs on Day 7 (92.55 %) and Day 14 (78.54 %) significantly surpassed that of traditional preparations. Additionally, NCs are more readily washed off cabbage leaves by water than EC and ME, aiding in the reduction of pesticide residues. This technology is particularly suitable for leafy vegetable crops in arid regions or greenhouses, enhancing effectiveness period while minimizing pesticide residues. This research offers novel insights and directions for the development of controlled-release pesticides.
