Abstract:Personalized exoskeleton assistance provides users with the largest improvements in walking speed 1 and energy economy 2,3,4 but requires lengthy tests under unnatural laboratory conditions. Here we show that exoskeleton optimization can be performed rapidly and under real-world conditions. We designed a portable ankle exoskeleton based on insights from tests with a versatile laboratory testbed. We developed a data-driven method for optimizing exoskeleton assistance outdoors using wearable sensors and found that it was equally effective as laboratory methods, but identified optimal parameters four times faster. We performed real-world optimization using data collected during many short bouts of walking at varying speeds. Assistance optimized during one hour of naturalistic walking in a public setting increased self-selected speed by 9 ± 4% and reduced the energy used to travel a given distance by 17 ± 5% compared with normal shoes. This assistance reduced metabolic energy consumption by 23 ± 8% when participants walked on a treadmill at a standard speed of 1.5 m s −1 . Human movements encode information that can be used to personalize assistive devices and enhance performance.

Abstract:Over the course of both evolution and development, the human musculoskeletal system has been well shaped for the cushion function of the foot during foot-strike and the impulsive function of the ankle joint during push-off. Nevertheless, an efficient energy interaction between foot structure and ankle joint is still lacking in the human body itself, which may limit the further potential of economical walking. Here we showed the metabolic expenditure of walking can be lessened by an unpowered exoskeleton robot that modulates energy among the foot-ankle complex towards a more effective direction. The unpowered exoskeleton recycles negative mechanical energy of the foot that is normally dissipated in heel-strike, retains the stored energy before mid-stance, and then transfers the energy to the ankle joint to assist the push-off. The modulation process of the exoskeleton consumes no input energy, yet reduces the metabolic cost of walking by % (mean ± s.e.m) for healthy subjects. The electromyography measurements demonstrate the activities of target ankle plantarflexors decreased significantly without added effort for the antagonistic muscle, suggesting the exoskeleton enhanced the subjects' energy efficiency of the foot-ankle complex in a natural manner. Furthermore, the exoskeleton also provides cushion assistance for walking, which leads to significantly decreased activity of the quadriceps muscle during heel-strike. Rather than strengthening the functions of existing biological structures, developing the complementary energy loop that does not exist in the human body itself also shows its potential for gait assistance.

Abstract:Soft exosuits have emerged as potent assistive tools for walking support and rehabilitation training. However, most existing soft exosuit systems rely on preset assistance modes, which may not accurately align with individual physiological states and movement requirements, leading to variable user experiences and efficacy. While existing human-in-the-loop (HIL) research predominantly focuses on optimizing metabolic cost and torque difference parameters, there is a notable absence of real-time monitoring methods that closely reflect the human body's physiological state and strategies that dynamically indicate walking efficiency. Motivated by this, we developed a novel personalized power-assist system. This system optimizes the power-assist output of the hip joint by monitoring the user's physiological and motion signals in real time, including heart rate (HR), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data, to assist hip flexion based on feedback. The findings from a metabolic expenditure trial demonstrate that the innovative soft exosuit, which is based on a Physiological State Monitoring Control (PSMC) system, achieves a reduction of 7.81% in metabolic expenditure during treadmill walking at a speed of 3.5 km/h compared to walking without the assistance of the exosuit. Additionally, during continuous exercise with varying intensities, the metabolic consumption level is reduced by 5.1%, 5.8%, and 8.2% at speeds of 2, 4, and 6 km per hour, respectively. These results support the design of a novel hip flexion-assisting soft exosuit, demonstrating that applying different assistance forces in consideration of different physiological states is a reasonable approach to reducing metabolic consumption.

Abstract:Abstract Exoskeletons that assist the hip, knee, and ankle joints have begun to improve human mobility, particularly by reducing the metabolic cost of walking. However, direct comparisons of optimal assistance of these joints, or their combinations, have not yet been possible. Assisting multiple joints may be more beneficial than the sum of individual effects, because muscles often span multiple joints, or less effective, because single-joint assistance can indirectly aid other joints. In this study, we used a hip–knee–ankle exoskeleton emulator paired with human-in-the-loop optimization to find single-joint, two-joint, and whole-leg assistance that maximally reduced the metabolic cost of walking. Hip-only and ankle-only assistance reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 26 and 30% relative to walking in the device unassisted, confirming that both joints are good targets for assistance ( N = 3). Knee-only assistance reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 13%, demonstrating that effective knee assistance is possible ( N = 3). Two-joint assistance reduced the metabolic cost of walking by between 33 and 42%, with the largest improvements coming from hip-ankle assistance ( N = 3). Assisting all three joints reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 50%, showing that at least half of the metabolic energy expended during walking can be saved through exoskeleton assistance ( N = 4). Changes in kinematics and muscle activity indicate that single-joint assistance indirectly assisted muscles at other joints, such that the improvement from whole-leg assistance was smaller than the sum of its single-joint parts. Exoskeletons can assist the entire limb for maximum effect, but a single well-chosen joint can be more efficient when considering additional factors such as weight and cost.

Abstract:Lowering locomotion's metabolic cost Walking and running require different gaits, with each type of motion putting a greater bias on different muscles and joints. Kim et al. developed a soft, fully portable, lightweight exosuit that is able to reduce the metabolic rate for both running and walking by assisting each motion via the hip extension (see the Perspective by Pons). A waist belt holds most of the mass, thus reducing the cost of carrying the suit. By tracking the motion of the user, the suit is able to switch modes between the two types of motion automatically. Abstract:Introduction: Human-in-the-loop optimization has made great progress to improve the performance of wearable robotic devices and become an effective customized assistance strategy. However, a lengthy period (several hours) of continuous walking for iterative optimization for each individual makes it less practical, especially for disabled people, who may not endure this process. Methods: In this paper, we provide a muscle-activity-based human-in-the-loop optimization strategy that can reduce the time spent on collecting biosignals during each iteration from around 120 s to 25 s. Both Bayesian and Covariance Matrix Adaptive Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) optimization algorithms were adopted on a portable hip exoskeleton to generate optimal assist torque patterns, optimizing rectus femoris muscle activity. Four volunteers were recruited for exoskeleton-assisted walking trials. Results and Discussion: As a result, using human-in-the-loop optimization led to muscle activity reduction of 33.56% and 41.81% at most when compared to walking without and with the hip exoskeleton, respectively. Furthermore, the results of human-in-the-loop optimization indicate that three out of four participants achieved superior outcomes compared to the predefined assistance patterns. Interestingly, during the optimization stage, the order of the two typical optimizers, i.e., Bayesian and CMA-ES, did not affect the optimization results. The results of the experiment have confirmed that the assistance pattern generated by muscle-activity-based human-in-the-loop strategy is superior to predefined assistance patterns, and this strategy can be achieved more rapidly than the one based on metabolic cost.
Design of an Ankle Exoskeleton That Recycles Energy to Assist Propulsion During Human Walking

Abstract:Objective: Active exoskeletons can handle different walking conditions, but require bulky components (e.g., motors) that need a significant source of power to do so. Purely passive exoskeletons are lightweight and energy-neutral, containing energy-recycling mechanisms that capture energy loss during negative power phases and return it as walking assistance. However, they are usually designed for stereotyped gaits (e.g., walking at fixed speed) and thus show poor adaptivity for variable conditions. This study is aimed to overcome these issues. Methods: A quasi-passive ankle exoskeleton is designed to integrate the merits of both active and passive exoskeletons, which captures the heel-strike energy loss and recycles it into propulsion. A novel, lightweight, energy-saving clutch and a heel-strike energy-storage mechanism are developed. They are coupled by a series spring that assists user's calf muscles. Six healthy subjects walked with the device on level ground and inclined surfaces to validate its functionality. Results: Level ground studies indicate that the energy-storage mechanism enhances the assistance by increasing the output torque of the exoskeleton. Reductions in metabolic cost (6.4 ± 1.3%, p < 0.05) were observed. During uphill walking, the assistance torque decreased compared with that on level ground, but it still reduced overall metabolic cost compared with baseline walking. During downhill walking, the assistance torque increased, but metabolic cost also slightly increased. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the functionality of the prototype on level ground and its limitations on inclined surfaces. Significance: The proposed device highlights the possibility of widening the potential applications of exoskeletons.

Abstract:Techniques proposed for assisting locomotion with exoskeletons have often included a combination of active work input and passive torque support, but the physiological effects of different assistance techniques remain unclear. We performed an experiment to study the independent effects of net exoskeleton work and average exoskeleton torque on human locomotion. Subjects wore a unilateral ankle exoskeleton and walked on a treadmill at 1.25 m·s(-1) while net exoskeleton work rate was systematically varied from -0.054 to 0.25 J·kg(-1)·s(-1), with constant (0.12 N·m·kg(-1)) average exoskeleton torque, and while average exoskeleton torque was systematically varied from approximately zero to 0.18 N·m·kg(-1), with approximately zero net exoskeleton work. We measured metabolic rate, center-of-mass mechanics, joint mechanics, and muscle activity. Both techniques reduced effort-related measures at the assisted ankle, but this form of work input reduced metabolic cost (-17% with maximum net work input) while this form of torque support increased metabolic cost (+13% with maximum average torque). Disparate effects on metabolic rate seem to be due to cascading effects on whole body coordination, particularly related to assisted ankle muscle dynamics and the effects of trailing ankle behavior on leading leg mechanics during double support. It would be difficult to predict these results using simple walking models without muscles or musculoskeletal models that assume fixed kinematics or kinetics. Data from this experiment can be used to improve predictive models of human neuromuscular adaptation and guide the design of assistive devices.
Muscle-tendon mechanics explain unexpected effects of exoskeleton assistance on metabolic rate during walking

Abstract:The goal of this study was to gain insight into how ankle exoskeletons affect the behavior of the plantarflexor muscles during walking. Using data from previous experiments, we performed electromyography-driven simulations of musculoskeletal dynamics to explore how changes in exoskeleton assistance affected plantarflexor muscle-tendon mechanics, particularly for the soleus. We used a model of muscle energy consumption to estimate individual muscle metabolic rate. As average exoskeleton torque was increased, while no net exoskeleton work was provided, a reduction in tendon recoil led to an increase in positive mechanical work performed by the soleus muscle fibers. As net exoskeleton work was increased, both soleus muscle fiber force and positive mechanical work decreased. Trends in the sum of the metabolic rates of the simulated muscles correlated well with trends in experimentally observed whole-body metabolic rate (R2=0.9), providing confidence in our model estimates. Our simulation results suggest that different exoskeleton behaviors can alter the functioning of the muscles and tendons acting at the assisted joint. Furthermore, our results support the idea that the series tendon helps reduce positive work done by the muscle fibers by storing and returning energy elastically. We expect the results from this study to promote the use of electromyography-driven simulations to gain insight into the operation of muscle-tendon units and to guide the design and control of assistive devices.

Abstract:Abstract Background Elastic ankle exoskeletons with intermediate stiffness springs in parallel with the human plantarflexors can reduce the metabolic cost of walking by ~ 7% at 1.25 m s − 1 . In a move toward ‘real-world’ application, we examined whether the unpowered approach has metabolic benefit across a range of walking speeds, and if so, whether the optimal exoskeleton stiffness was speed dependent. We hypothesized that, for any walking speed, there would be an optimal ankle exoskeleton stiffness - not too compliant and not too stiff - that minimizes the user’s metabolic cost. In addition, we expected the optimal stiffness to increase with walking speed. Methods Eleven participants walked on a level treadmill at 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75 m s − 1 while we used a state-of-the-art exoskeleton emulator to apply bilateral ankle exoskeleton assistance at five controlled rotational stiffnesses (k exo = 0, 50, 100, 150, 250 Nm rad − 1 ). We measured metabolic cost, lower-limb joint mechanics, and EMG of muscles crossing the ankle, knee, and hip. Results Metabolic cost was significantly reduced at the lowest exoskeleton stiffness (50 Nm rad − 1 ) for assisted walking at both 1.25 (4.2%; p = 0.0162) and 1.75 m s − 1 (4.7%; p = 0.0045). At these speeds, the metabolically optimal exoskeleton stiffness provided peak assistive torques of ~ 0.20 Nm kg − 1 that resulted in reduced biological ankle moment of ~ 12% and reduced soleus muscle activity of ~ 10%. We found no stiffness that could reduce the metabolic cost of walking at 1.5 m s − 1 . Across all speeds, the non-weighted sum of soleus and tibialis anterior activation rate explained the change in metabolic rate due to exoskeleton assistance ( p 0.56). Conclusions Elastic ankle exoskeletons with low rotational stiffness reduce users’ metabolic cost of walking at slow and fast but not intermediate walking speed. The relationship between the non-weighted sum of soleus and tibialis activation rate and metabolic cost (R 2 > 0.56) indicates that muscle activation may drive metabolic demand. Future work using simulations and ultrasound imaging will get ‘under the skin’ and examine the interaction between exoskeleton stiffness and plantarflexor muscle dynamics to better inform stiffness selection in human-machine systems.

Abstract:Exoskeletons that assist in ankle plantarflexion can improve energy economy in locomotion. Characterizing the joint-level mechanisms behind these reductions in energy cost can lead to a better understanding of how people interact with these devices, as well as to improved device design and training protocols. We examined the biomechanical responses to exoskeleton assistance in exoskeleton users trained with a lengthened protocol. Kinematics at unassisted joints were generally unchanged by assistance, which has been observed in other ankle exoskeleton studies. Peak plantarflexion angle increased with plantarflexion assistance, which led to increased total and biological mechanical power despite decreases in biological joint torque and whole-body net metabolic energy cost. Ankle plantarflexor activity also decreased with assistance. Muscles that act about unassisted joints also increased activity for large levels of assistance, and this response should be investigated over long-term use to prevent overuse injuries.
Modulating Multiarticular Energy during Human Walking and Running with an Unpowered Exoskeleton

Abstract:Researchers have made advances in reducing the metabolic rate of both walking and running by modulating mono-articular energy with exoskeletons. However, how to modulate multiarticular energy with exoskeletons to improve the energy economy of both walking and running is still a challenging problem, due to the lack of understanding of energy transfer among human lower-limb joints. Based on the study of the energy recycling and energy transfer function of biarticular muscles, we proposed a hip-knee unpowered exoskeleton that emulates and reinforces the function of the hamstrings and rectus femoris in different gait phases. The biarticular exo-tendon of the exoskeleton assists hamstrings to recycle the kinetic energy of the leg swing while providing hip extension torque in the swing phase. In the following stance phase, the exo-tendon releases the stored energy to assist the co-contraction of gluteus maximus and rectus femoris for both hip extension and knee extension, thus realizing the phased modulation of hip and knee joint energy. The metabolic rate of both walking (1.5 m/s) and running (2.5 m/s) can be reduced by 6.2% and 4.0% with the multiarticular energy modulation of a hip-knee unpowered exoskeleton, compared to that of walking and running without an exoskeleton. The bio-inspired design method of this study may inspire people to develop devices that assist multiple gaits in the future.

Abstract:Ankle-based exoskeletons have demonstrated metabolic benefits during steady-state walking; however, variability exists in individual adaptation timelines necessary to achieve those benefits. This study assessed timelines for metabolic and gait-related adaptation while wearing an ankle-based exoskeleton while powered (EXOP) compared to unpowered (EXNP) and no device worn (NOEX). Metabolic (VO 2 ) and biomechanics data were collected while 14 participants walked on a treadmill at 1.3 m/s for six sessions. To better understand variability in responses to wearing exoskeletons, the cohort was divided based on the slope of the VO 2 response of the first two sessions in the EXOP condition, and gait parameters were compared between subgroups. Repeated measures analyses of variance revealed a significant ( p ≤ 0.001) 10% VO 2 reduction for EXOP compared to EXNP and a non-significant 2.5% reduction for EXOP v NOEX. Lack of significant session-based comparisons indicated no additional VO 2 adaptation; however, significant session-related results for peak knee flexion (interaction, p = 0.042) and step width (session main effect, p = 0.003) suggest gait-related adaptation continued during the sessions. Subgroup results indicated different response profiles to wearing exoskeletons; and implications of classifying initial responses based on metabolic response are discussed as an approach to understand what drives variation in responses to these devices. After initial training, VO 2 reductions were observed with an ankle-based exoskeleton during the initial session and those reductions were maintained for the remaining sessions. Some gait-related variables continued to change over the remaining sessions. Exploratory work based on differences between early metabolic responses revealed potential adaptation strategy subgroups.

Abstract:Introduction: Children and adolescents with neurological impairments face reduced participation and independence in daily life activities due to walking difficulties. Existing assistive devices often offer insufficient support, potentially leading to wheelchair dependence and limiting physical activity and daily life engagement. Mobile wearable robots, such as exoskeletons and exosuits, have shown promise in supporting adults during activities of daily living but are underexplored for children. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to examine the potential of a cable-driven exosuit, the Myosuit, to enhance walking efficiency in adolescents with diverse ambulatory impairments. Each participant walked a course including up-hill, down-hill, level ground walking, and stairs ascending and descending, with and without the exosuit's assistance. We monitored the time and step count to complete the course and the average heart rate and muscle activity. Additionally, we assessed the adolescents' perspective on the exosuit's utility using a visual analog scale. Results: Six adolescents completed the study. Although not statistically significant, five participants completed the course with the exosuit's assistance in reduced time (time reduction range: [-3.87, 17.42]%, p-value: 0.08, effect size: 0.88). The number of steps taken decreased significantly with the Myosuit's assistance (steps reduction range: [1.07, 15.71]%, p-value: 0.04, effect size: 0.90). Heart rate and muscle activity did not differ between Myosuit-assisted and unassisted conditions (p-value: 0.96 and 0.35, effect size: 0.02 and 0.42, respectively). Participants generally perceived reduced effort and increased safety with the Myosuit's assistance, especially during tasks involving concentric contractions (e.g., walking uphill). Three participants expressed a willingness to use the Myosuit in daily life, while the others found it heavy or too conspicuous. Discussion: Increased walking speed without increasing physical effort when performing activities of daily living could lead to higher levels of participation and increased functional independence. Despite perceiving the benefits introduced by the exosuit's assistance, adolescents reported the need for further modification of the device design before using it extensively at home and in the community.

Abstract:Abstract Background Walking speed and energy economy tend to decline with age. Lower-limb exoskeletons have demonstrated potential to improve either measure, but primarily in studies conducted on healthy younger adults. Promising techniques like optimization of exoskeleton assistance have yet to be tested with older populations, while speed and energy consumption have yet to be simultaneously optimized for any population. Methods We investigated the effectiveness of human-in-the-loop optimization of ankle exoskeletons with older adults. Ten healthy adults > 65 years of age (5 females; mean age: 72 ± 3 yrs) participated in approximately 240 min of training and optimization with tethered ankle exoskeletons on a self-paced treadmill. Multi-objective human-in-the-loop optimization was used to identify assistive ankle plantarflexion torque patterns that simultaneously improved self-selected walking speed and metabolic rate. The effects of optimized exoskeleton assistance were evaluated in separate trials. Results Optimized exoskeleton assistance improved walking performance for older adults. Both objectives were simultaneously improved; self-selected walking speed increased by 8% (0.10 m/s; p = 0.001) and metabolic rate decreased by 19% ( p = 0.007), resulting in a 25% decrease in energetic cost of transport ( p = 8 e -4) compared to walking with exoskeletons applying zero torque. Compared to younger participants in studies optimizing a single objective, our participants required lower exoskeleton torques, experienced smaller improvements in energy use, and required more time for motor adaptation. Conclusions Our results confirm that exoskeleton assistance can improve walking performance for older adults and show that multiple objectives can be simultaneously addressed through human-in-the-loop optimization.

Abstract:Developing exoskeletons that can reduce the metabolic cost of assisted subjects is challenging since a systematic design approach is required to capture the effects of device dynamics and the assistance torques on human performance. Design studies that rely on musculoskeletal models hold high promise in providing effective design guidelines, as the effect of various devices and different assistance torque profiles on metabolic cost can be studied systematically. In this paper, we present a simulation-based multi-criteria design approach to systematically study the effect of different device kinematics and corresponding optimal assistive torque profiles under actuator saturation on the metabolic cost, muscle activation, and joint reaction forces of subjects walking under different loading conditions. For the multi-criteria comparison of exoskeletons, we introduce a Pareto optimization approach to simultaneously optimize the exoskeleton power consumption and the human metabolic rate reduction during walking, under different loading conditions. We further superpose the effects of device inertia and electrical regeneration on the metabolic rate and power consumption, respectively. Our results explain the effects of heavy loads on the optimal assistance profiles of the exoskeletons and provide guidelines on choosing optimal device configurations under actuator torque limitations, device inertia, and regeneration effects. The multi-criteria comparison of devices indicates that despite the similar assistance levels of both devices, mono-articular exoskeletons show better performance on reducing the peak reaction forces, while the power consumption of bi-articular devices is less sensitive to the loading. Furthermore, for the bi-articular exoskeletons, the device inertia has lower detrimental effects on the metabolic cost of subjects and does not affect the Pareto-optimality of solutions.

Abstract:The growing field of soft wearable exosuits, is gradually gaining terrain and proposing new complementary solutions in assistive technology, with several advantages in terms of portability, kinematic transparency, ergonomics, and metabolic efficiency. Those are palatable benefits that can be exploited in several applications, ranging from strength and resistance augmentation in industrial scenarios, to assistance or rehabilitation for people with motor impairments. To be effective, however, an exosuit needs to synergistically work with the human and matching specific requirements in terms of both movements kinematics and dynamics: an accurate and timely intention-detection strategy is the paramount aspect which assume a fundamental importance for acceptance and usability of such technology. We previously proposed to tackle this challenge by means of a model-based myoelectric controller, treating the exosuit as an external muscular layer in parallel to the human biomechanics and as such, controlled by the same efferent motor commands of biological muscles. However, previous studies that used classical control methods, demonstrated that the level of device's intervention and effectiveness of task completion are not linearly related: therefore, using a newly implemented EMG-driven controller, we isolated and characterized the relationship between assistance magnitude and muscular benefits, with the goal to find a range of assistance which could make the controller versatile for both dynamic and static tasks. Ten healthy participants performed the experiment resembling functional daily activities living in separate assistance conditions: without the device's active support and with different levels of intervention by the exosuit. Higher assistance levels resulted in larger reductions in the activity of the muscles augmented by the suit actuation and a good performance in motion accuracy, despite involving a decrease of the movement velocities, with respect to the no assistance condition. Moreover, increasing torque magnitude by the exosuit resulted in a significant reduction in the biological torque at the elbow joint and in a progressive effective delay in the onset of muscular fatigue. Thus, contrarily to classical force and proportional myoelectric schemes, the implementation of an opportunely tailored EMG-driven model based controller affords to naturally match user's intention detection and provide an assistance level working symbiotically with the human biomechanics.

Abstract:The exoskeleton is employed to assist humans in various domains including military missions, rehabilitation, industrial operation, and activities of daily living (ADLs).Walking is a fundamental ADL, and exoskeletons are capable of reducing the activation and metabolism of lower extremity muscles through active assistance during walking. To improve the performance of active assistance strategy, this article proposes a framework using an active hip exoskeleton. Subsequently, it correlates to an already established Bayesian-based human gait recognition algorithm, with a particular focus on linear and circular walking within industrial and ADL contexts. In theorizing this strategy for exoskeletons, this study further reveals, in part, the activation characteristics of human hip muscles for the instruction and regulation of active assistance duration and onset timing. This proposed active assistance strategy provides new insights for enhancing the performance of assistive robots and facilitating human robot interaction within the context of ADLs.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots are frequently applied to augment or assist the user’s natural motion. Generally, each assisted joint corresponds to at least one specific motor to ensure the independence of movement between joints. This means that as there are more joints to be assisted, more motors are required, resulting in increasing robot weight, decreasing motor utilization, and weakening exoskeleton robot assistance efficiency. To solve this problem, the design and control of a lightweight soft exoskeleton that assists hip-plantar flexion of both legs in different phases during a gait cycle with only one motor is presented in this paper. Inspired by time-division multiplexing and the symmetry of walking motion, an actuation scheme that uses different time-periods of the same motor to transfer different forces to different joints is formulated. An automatic winding device is designed to dynamically change the loading path of the assistive force at different phases of the gait cycle. The system is designed to assist hip flexion and plantar flexion of both legs with only one motor, since there is no overlap between the hip flexion movement and the toe-offs movement of the separate legs during walking. The weight of the whole system is only 2.24 kg. PD iterative control is accomplished by an algorithm that utilizes IMUs attached on the thigh recognizing the maximum hip extension angle to characterize toe-offs indirectly, and two load cells to monitor the cable tension. In the study of six subjects, muscle fatigue of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius and soleus decreased by an average of 14.69%, 6.66%, 17.71%, and 8.15%, respectively, compared to scenarios without an exoskeleton.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots have the potential to augment human motor capabilities. however, current control strategies often require task-specific control laws tailored for different scenarios, which limits the applicability of exoskeletons. In this study, we propose a control strategy for exoskeleton robots that is adaptable across various scenarios. We employ adaptive oscillators (AO) with feedback control to rapidly estimate the wearer's motion phase and subsequently provide torque assistance to the wearer's hip joint based on a TCN-LSTM model. During experiments, we collected surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals from the tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, and rectus muscles of seven groups of subjects performing treadmill walking and inclined treadmill exercises. We utilized the short-time Fourier transform to extract frequency characteristics of the signals and statistically analyzed the rate of frequency change in each muscle group under different strategies. The results indicate that when wearing the exoskeleton, the overall muscle frequency changes more slowly, suggesting that subjects can maintain activity for a longer duration before fatigue sets in. This control strategy effectively reduces the energetic cost of lower limb work for the wearer and enhances the exoskeleton's versatility in various applications.
