Abstract:The changes in the pedagogy of research supervision in the university context are now reflected within the practices of theological seminaries and accredited colleges. A neglected analytical framework that could illuminate the supervisory relationship is provided by Winnicott's Object Relations Theory and Bion and Diamond's Organizational Psychodynamics, as they interconnect identity, stress and creativity – factors that are germane to the researcher experience. Object Relations also parallels faith development. Given the significant personal investment demanded by research, a crisis of identity for the religious student is simultaneously a crisis of faith. Conversely, a Christian faith experience could sustain the research journey through the appropriation of divine Grace. Some suggestions are provided as to how this could be manifested within the research culture.

Abstract:This article (a) explores the experience of an early childhood teacher researcher as she intentionally uses interactive read‐alouds to promote social justice and to encourage critical consciousness in her preschool classroom and (b) offers guidance for educators to embark on their own social justice journey. Over the course of a 2‐year study, the teacher engaged the children with 12 books. Findings describe the personal and professional evolution of the teacher researcher as social justice became her "way of being." As she studied and reflected on issues of oppression and equity, and considered her own classroom read‐alouds, she shifted her approach from centering social–emotional learning to social justice. This shift was marked by changes in book selection and presentation and by two key turning points. Findings also detail the roles the teacher adopted as she explored books with her students and illustrate how these roles supported and prompted social justice. Self‐reflection points and steps are included to support educators in teaching for social justice.

Abstract:Human development and faith, as life-cycle sequences of becoming, inform pastoral care training in seminaries, chaplaincy, and congregations. A life-cycle perspective considers the requirements for a good life, evaluated not only by cultural norms, but also by the subjective experience of individuals. In a theological understanding of human development, attention to interpersonal and social contexts expands to include the dimensions of soul and faith as intrapsychic experiences, with wisdom as the interpersonal fruit of development. Faith is to wisdom as roots are to fruits. Erikson's eight developmental stages and Schwartz's qualities of Self-leadership, or inner wisdom, are correlated with the developmental stages where they are most likely to emerge. The positive Self-leadership qualities Schwartz identifies are linked with their potential negative counterparts to determine what we are likely to find when Self-Leadership is missing. Wisdom, as the faithful dimension of our humanity, has the potential to grow throughout life.
Understanding English Language Arts Teachers’ Listening Orientations in Middle School Gifted Classrooms

Abstract:Within gifted education, discourse-based instructional methods, such as Socratic Seminars, are identified as strategies to support the development of gifted and advanced readers’ critical thinking skills. While research on dialogic discourse has centered on key components such as discourse patterns and the types of questions teachers ask, the unique nature of teachers’ listening has a limited research base. In this qualitative study, we examined five teachers’ perceptions, focusing on one teacher as an illustrative case, of their listening during dialogic discourse-based lessons with gifted and advanced readers. Major themes included that (a) teachers’ listening is multifaceted and individualized, (b) teachers listen for certain reasons, (c) teachers’ expectations inform their and their students’ roles during discourse, and (d) teachers’ listening is related to their belief systems, and (e) there are barriers to effective listening. Implications for practice and research are discussed.
Mindfulness and meditation - Training our spidey-senses for critical qualitative health research

Abstract:I’ve been training students in mindfulness and meditation for over 10 years. What began as a pedagogical survival tool (for my own mental health) soon emerged as something that was incredibly beneficial to my public health students. Turns out sitting in silence, anchoring ourselves in the present moment, and not doing but instead being, is not only good for your physical, social, and emotional health, it’s a great tool for learning. Students report that closing their eyes and sitting together in meditation fosters trust and compassion and builds a sense of community. These feelings allow them to take risks in their learning, to deeply engage with the material, and to participate openly and creatively in ways that foster real growth. During the pandemic I’ve had time to reflect on what I have observed is another benefit of mindfulness and meditation training – that these practices help students develop important skills – or spidey-senses – that are the superpowers of critical qualitative health researchers. These include the ability to be fully present in our work, to listen deeply, to be curious and non-judgemental, to not be attached to outcomes and what we expect to hear or learn, to come to each study and each participant with ‘beginners mind’, to prioritize different ways of knowing, and to accept when things don’t go according to plan (as they always seem to do in qualitative research). In this presentation I welcome all superhero’s and in particular those interested in developing their own and their students spidey-senses. In our time together I’ll share some of the science on why this practice makes good scientists, demonstrate a practice, and provide some tips for those interested in trying it in their own classrooms. Abstract:Robert Greenleaf speaks of his relationship to Robert Frost’s poem Directive as a symbol in understanding servant-leadership, offering meaning for others in their reconciliation of who and where they are on life’s inward journey. Reflecting on my personal journey, in searching for a higher purpose and identifying what needs changing, a closer examination into the learnings inspired by my family is exposing the limitations in my predisposed self-orientation approach to leadership and challenging my relationship to a life of meaning. My inward desire to become a better person is opening my heart towards an other-orientation approach to serving, and towards servant-leadership; a framework that encourages dreaming bigger dreams and healing previously ignored wounds. Through the lens of self-responsibility, this article explores the progression from assimilating into a position of power, to redefining meaning through the freedom of choice, to prioritizing the well-being of others as an expression of love. This article ultimately affirms how servant-leadership, through the demonstration of awareness, conceptualization, and healing, leads to self-transcendence; reframing life from being a linear problem to solve to being a mystery to embrace.

Abstract:Transformative ethnography is a method of learning to cross cultures through an embodied, experiential, and reflective practice. I have developed this method over fifteen years of anthropological fieldwork and reflection. This methodology requires the practitioner to embody a foreign practice, generally through art, music, or a specialized skill or technique. She moves through four phases that overlap and intertwine as she goes about the ethnographic process: sensorial observation, embodying practice, emptying and reflecting, and embodying representation. The purpose of Transformative Ethnography is to become explicitly aware of the process of loosening ones own, and adopting to another cultural way of thinking and acting. The overarching research question to this methodology asks How can we re-make ourselves, consciously, in order to fit new (multi-) cultural realities? It is controversial in that it incorporates mindfulness training - something not yet broadly accepted in our discipline. It is creative in that it draws on art-based techniques of observation and embodiment in ways that select few anthropologists are using in the field today.
Spiritual awakening and transformation in scientists and academics

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to document both quantitatively and qualitatively the characteristics of spiritual awakenings and their transformational effects in scientists and academics who reported having experienced this phenomenon; it also aimed to explore barriers these individuals perceived to sharing their experiences with others within society. METHODS: An interview questionnaire was used to collect detailed descriptions of both the physical and metaphysical experiences of 54 scientists and academics having had a spiritually transformative experience (STE) (e.g., spontaneous energetic awakenings, awakenings occurring through near-death experiences (NDEs), and through spiritual practices). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Participants reported the STE as a mystical experience involving feelings of expansion (including conscious awareness leaving the body), energy rising up the spine, a sense of being enveloped in light, love or part of a unified energetic field. Principle triggers for these experiences included concentrating on spiritual matters, the presence of a spiritually developed person, and intense meditation or prayer. Transformational changes in participants included increased sensory sensitivity, creativity, and changes in beliefs, including a desire to serve others, a sense of unity with all, and the immortality of the spirit. Effects on career ranged from incorporating their new worldview and spiritual insights into the way they interacted with others within their current career, to radically changing their career to focus on questions related to the fundamental nature of consciousness or to serve others from this new perspective. Among barriers to sharing experiences, participants noted their concern that they would be misunderstood or ridiculed by others.

Abstract:Conscious awareness implies a connection with all of life. Being conscious means acting with more intention, having greater self‐regulating behaviour, and demonstrating a deeper awareness of the causes and consequences of actions. This paper describes a course design for the development of consciousness awareness in management education. The purpose of the course, Managing with Spirit, is to encourage students to be more aware of their relationships with themselves, their community, and the planet as integrated wisdom. The three sections of the course (inner leadership, spirit at work, and the science of interconnection) all contribute to developing practices of reflection, mindfulness, and presencing for deeper awareness. From this, students can bring significant skills into the organizational context that include improved interpersonal skills, creativity, adaptability, problem‐solving, leadership skills, compassion, and ecological awareness. These skills enable our future managers to be better equipped to deal with the increasingly complex issues that are facing organizations as they understand and appreciate the sacredness of our interconnection with each other and our planet.

Abstract:In the current era, when information is accessible to all, students are less motivated to invest in long learning processes. Thus, teachers need to focus on education while developing along the way their students’ self-fulfillment that is based on realistic self-awareness. By developing students’ motivation to delve into the information they can easily access, students also learn to develop their own thinking and understanding of the same information everyone has. The question is how to develop self-awareness. This year-long case study applied teaching processes based on the Mediated Learning Experience approach to 16 fourth-grade students via four of their teachers. Focus groups, individual interviews, and observations were used to collect the data, which then underwent discourse analysis. The teachers indicated that, by basing their teaching on building reciprocity and meaningful learning processes according to the Mediated Learning Experience criteria, they better understood the unique self-awareness that each student developed. Their understanding helped them to enhance their students’ internal motivation, and maintain an improved atmosphere in class.

Abstract:This reflective, autoethnographic piece provides some insights into our involvement with a program that promotes a value-driven approach to community development work. As a ‘conversation’ between a lecturer and a graduate, or Educator of Informal Educators and Informal Educator, we discuss the process of teaching and learning about values within day-to-day community development practice. We emphasise that a value-driven approach enables informal educators to celebrate cultural diversity, which can be complex in community settings. As the educator of informal educators (Louise), I reflect on the need to explore and demonstrate what value-driven practice looks like in day-to-day practice within community work and not simply state that values are important. This was prompted by self-reflection and the realisation that my teaching failed to illuminate how to bring values to life in all aspects of community work to achieve anti-discriminatory, inclusive and empowering practice. As an informal educator (Matthew), I consider how community development theories and values translate into meaningful practice that celebrates cultural diversity. Reflections are influenced by theories from Paulo Freire, with a focus on his notion that ‘educators should respect the autonomy of the students and respect cultural identities’. An example of Freirean dialogue, the article discusses our critical consciousness through praxis as educator and informal educator. Acknowledging that we are never fully complete—we are always ‘becoming’—we hope the article will be of interest to both Educators of Informal Educators and Informal Educators alike.
Using meaningful experiences as a vision for physical education teaching and teacher education practice

Abstract:Background: Teachers' visions are vivid and concrete images of ideal classroom practices. A vision for teaching is important to both practices in the classroom as well as teacher development across time. A useful tool to explore and analyse the role of vision in teacher practices is provided by [Hammerness, K. 2003. "Learning to Hope, or Hoping to Learn? The Role of Vision in the Early Professional Lives of Teachers." Journal of Teacher Education 54 (1): 43–56], whose framework of vision consists of three dimensions: focus, range and distance.Purpose: The writing of [Kretchmar, R. S. 2000. "Moving and Being Moved: Implications for Practice." Quest 52 (3): 260–272; 2008. "The Increasing Utility of Elementary School Physical Education: A Mixed Blessing and Unique Challenge." The Elementary School Journal 108 (3): 161–170] provides the basis for a vision focused on meaningful experiences in physical education. The purpose of this paper is to describe the ways a vision based on meaningful experiences enabled two teachers and three teacher educators to name, describe, and enact their physical education teaching and teacher education practices.Methodology: Raw data from six separate self-studies of practice involving the five participants provided the starting point for this research. Data sources, including written reflections and critical friend responses as well as audio recordings of conversations with critical friends, were mined to identify examples where vision was represented. Further data were generated in a focus group where participants shared and analysed their experiences and discussed how meaningful physical education served as both an individual and collective vision for practice. A final written reflection allowed participants to articulate their current vision for meaningful physical education. A thematic analysis of all data sources supported the organisation of data into three distinct phases of development of practices with emphasis on the role of vision in each phase.Findings: Over time, there was an evolution in our understanding of both what meaningful physical education consisted of and how we might facilitate meaningful experiences for children. In particular, our visions became clearer and better aligned with our practices. We illustrate how we developed our practice in ways that allowed us to take ownership of this vision, and, in the process, changed who we were as teachers and teacher educators. Finally, we share how the process of exploring and analysing our individual visions allowed us to articulate a shared vision of meaningful physical education and explain how to go about implementing our collective vision in practice.Conclusion: We highlight the value of paying attention to the role of vision in promoting and supporting educators, individually and collectively, in developing and sustaining innovation in teaching and teacher education practice.

The cadence of nature for educating: Uncovering a path to knowing in a comparative study of Daoism and lost gospels

Abstract:This article compares the two worldviews of Daoism and selected lost gospels, and considers the pedagogical implications. It explores their core concepts and how each applies these concepts to define human beings in their world. The comparative analysis shows that they share a view of a process of becoming that defines how humans know and the nature of reality. Interdependence and impermanence, descriptors of nature, are the core concepts. Humans, as part of nature, direct becoming by aligning with the core concepts through the removal of unnatural influences. In alignment, they are in a state searching for definition and open to creation, enacting a different way of constructing meaning and interpreting their world. The similarities found between Daoism and a lost mode of thought in Western cultures further characterize the process. It suggests that this path to becoming was lost in the process of modernization, raising the questions of what the totality of human potential entails, and how we might fulfill it in educating.

Abstract:From the beginning of history sounds have played a fundamentally important role in humanity’s development as ways of expression and of communication. However in contemporary western society, and indeed globally, we are experiencing an excess of speech and a relentless encouragement to expression. Such excess indicates a misunderstanding about what expression and dialogue should be. This condition encourages us to think about silence, solitude and contemplation and the role they might play in restoring the realm of personal understanding of the Self and of one’s authentic experience of the Other. The purpose of this article is to explore the potency of a silence that arises from our participation in the world. We present first some ideas about silence as a human phenomenon. This is followed by an examination of silence and language, an investigation of silence in dialogue, and of its educational implications. The article concludes by emphasising the value of silence as potency in itself, assisting in recovering the expressive powers of language. We argue that it is important to understand the positive status of silence in order to recognise and avoid repressive speech and to introduce its potential for reflective learning.

Abstract:This grounded theory study addressed the question: What model explains the lived experience of profound awe? It emerged out of a recognition that awe continues to be defined as a distinct emotion, and fails to account for the possible range of intensity of affect inherent to awe. Forty interviews were conducted with participants who identified as having had a profound experience of awe. A meditation script was used to induce a high level of memory recall of their experience. Results of the grounded theory analysis yielded three major themes: readiness, overwhelm, and beyond the everyday self. Profound awe was found to be a self-transcending emotion experience that dissolves self/other boundaries of the ego-identity into a small self or expansive self. The varied emotion appraisals ranged in intensity from mild to profound peak experience, with the potential to be transformative.

Abstract:Artistic expressions provide visual stimulation and information, promote cultural awareness, and evoke thoughts and feelings. A very interesting component of artistic expression is the ability of the art form to produce a state of well-being in both the artist and the observer. This article (1) investigates the connection of my art to a specific purpose and fulfillment, (2) explains how artistic expressions can promote well-being through neurostimulation, (3) provides an example of how artistic expressions can assist in productivity, (4) expounds on the ability of artistic expressions to elicit cultural awareness, and (5) presents reflections on my paintings and their possible influence on an observer. The article reenforces the concept that artistic expressions extend beyond surface observation and stimulation and can penetrate the inner being and spirit of the artist and the observer, thereby affecting thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and well-being. Artistic expressions are forms of communication that can connect individuals across geographical boundaries, cultures, and time.

Abstract:Spirituality is concerned with eternal truth and universality and is essential for sustainable development. Many education systems also view spirituality as a part of religion as religious organizations also consider that their activities promote spiritual development. Such a situation has led many secular nations to avoid spiritual education. However, universities in secular countries have been conducting studies on spiritual intelligence of individuals and also spiritual development in students and teachers reflected in their day to day activities. Certain school systems have been giving stress on spiritual development of students. Many co-curricular activities including prayer classes contribute to the development of spirituality in school students. At the higher education stage, discussions and debates play crucial role in making students realize the limitations of religions and evil effects of religious fanaticism. Spiritual development has its origin in the mother’s womb. The spiritual practices of the mother have much influence on the baby. Later, family members contribute to the spiritual development of the baby. Although the foundation of the spiritual development of an individual is laid by one’s family members, it is nurtured by a formal education system that is steered by teachers. Hence, the preparation of teachers for this role has assumed significance. The teaching about various spiritual leaders and their contributions to education system is utilized by teacher training programs in making their trainees aware of importance of spirituality in the life of an individual. Abstract:This article offers a personal documentation of the contributions of James F. T. Bugental to the author's personal and professional development. Bugental's authenticity and presence, in both his writings and clinical work, are discussed in terms of their reflection of a compassionate wisdom regarding a process-focused approach to experiencing and to psychological services. Drawing on the Bugentalian metaphor of life and psychotherapy as journeying, the article concludes with a poem that speaks to the dynamics and depths of all personal pilgrimages. I am not the person who began to practice counseling or psychotherapy more than 30 years ago in an army hospital. And the changes in me are not solely those worked by time, education, and the life circumstances shared by most of my generation. A powerful force affecting me has been my participation in so many lives. Abstract:The Wandiny creative gathering of Indigenous and non-Indigenous poets, artists, Elders, and participants across Australia actively sought to foreground First Nations voices, stories, poetry, art, and ontology. This paper presents the auto-ethnographic reflections from the event organisers, demonstrating that participation in a gathering that honours Eldership and Country is a profoundly personal and spiritual experience. Following a call-and-response format, the event promoted deep listening and responsive writing contributed to a cultural sense of being and understanding.

Abstract:This article presents an exploratory and interpretative study on the development of self-reflection and self-knowledge in university teachers by an embodied experience. Dance Movement Therapy and Body–Mind Centering share the fundamentals of the paradigm of embodied cognition through a first-person full-body experience. Using these principles, a training program was designed and implemented in a cohort of 22 university teachers. The article offers details of the program and the adaptations necessary to carry it out in a higher-education context. The results of the qualitative analysis that was conducted suggested that the transformative learning paradigm could be useful to explain the process carried out by the participants. With the necessary limitations, the incorporation of awareness and attentive participation in bodily states and actions manifests as a transformative element in the teacher. The participants, despite initial resistance, see possibilities for applying this knowledge in their teaching practice.
