Abstract:In the 1990s, handheld technology allowed overcoming infrastructural limitations that had hindered until then the integration of ICT in mathematics education. In this paper, we reflect on this integration of handheld technology from a personal perspective, as well as on the lessons to be learnt from it. The main lesson in our opinion concerns the growing awareness that students’ mathematical thinking is deeply affected by their work with technology in a complex and subtle way. Theories on instrumentation and orchestration make explicit this subtlety and help to design and realise technology-rich mathematics education. As a conclusion, extrapolation of these lessons to a future with mobile multi-functional handheld technology leads to the issues of connectivity and in- and out-of-school collaborative work as major issues for future research.

Engage Your Students By Teaching Programming Using Only Mobile Devices With Touchdevelop

Abstract:We are experiencing a technology shift: Powerful and easy-to-use touchscreen-based mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are becoming more prevalent than traditional PCs and laptops. We propose that computer programming, and thus teaching of programming, can and should be done directly on the mobile devices themselves, without the need for a separate PC or laptop to write code. In this workshop, participants will learn about developing software directly on smartphones without a PC using TouchDevelop, a novel application creation environment on Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft Research (http://touchdevelop.com). Its typed, structured programming language is built around the idea of only using a touchscreen as the input device to author code. A semi-structured code editor makes it easy to navigate between different syntax elements. By inferring types and mining previously written programs, the editor provides highly predictive auto-completion suggestions to the user. The language provides built-in primitives that make it easy to access the rich sensor data available on a mobile device. Programming on mobile devices engages students in new ways, allowing them to access and manipulate programmatically their most personal digital data such as pictures, videos, and music. Programming on smartphones which we carry around with us at all times means instant gratification for students, as they can show their games and applications to their friends, and it means that students can do their homework or additional practicing at all times. For this workshop, a laptop is optional; Windows Phone 7 devices will be provided for exercises.
Highs and Lows of Mobile Digital Technology Integration in Kindergarten

Abstract:This 2-year research study examined 27 kindergarten educators’ professional learning experiences using open-ended tablet applications to support children’s (aged 3–6 years) oral and visual literacy learning. In contrast to typical professional development initiatives, the educators in this study were treated like professionals with control over how the apps would be integrated into their daily pedagogical practice. The research team functioned as technical advisors, observers, and resource providers. Research team members ascertained educators’ levels of confidence, experience, and interests through regular interviews, questionnaires, and biweekly classroom visits. Annual workshops provided opportunities for educators to reflect and share insights. Over the 2 years, the educators experienced a series of highs and lows in response to their particular contexts. While they were initially confident about introducing the apps in their classrooms, technical and environmental challenges soon led to frustration. With time and ongoing support, educators worked through a series of challenges to develop deeper understandings of the technical and pedagogical issues related to digital technology (DT) integration. They came to appreciate the learning and teaching benefits of the apps, which provided them with additional tools to support children as they created, documented, and reflected on their learning. Moreover, the educators began to use the children’s digital work for assessment and planning purposes. This study illustrated how teacher learning in DT integration is complex and nonlinear, with different competencies and needs for support coming to the fore over time.
Orchestrating the instruments: integrating ICT in the secondary mathematics classroom through handheld technology networks

Abstract:This article reports on a study into the integration of ICT for students’ personal use in the secondary mathematics classroom through using small software applications on handheld computing devices (graphical calculators). The handhelds were networked through wireless hubs so that data, software and output can be shared and an interactive space created for whole‐class interaction and discussion. It argues that personal access to ICT tools within the traditional classroom environment is vital to support and enhance learners’ mathematical development and that integration is effectively initiated through the use of ‘microworlds’. The initial outcomes of this study and a review of research carried out in the USA and Europe reveal the transformative potential of this technology for the mathematics classroom and other educational settings.

Lessons from Transforming Second-Year Honors Physics Lab

Abstract:New technology like the Arduino microcontroller platform presents an opportunity to transform Beyond the First Year (BFY) physics labs to better prepare physics students for work in research labs and beyond. The flexibility, low cost, and power of these devices provides an attractive way for students to learn to use and master research-grade instrumentation. Therefore, we introduced new technology, including Arduino Due microcontroller boards, to a second-year honors physics lab in order to provide improved learning experiences for students. This transformation was implemented in three lab modules and focused on diminishing the black box nature of the traditional labs while encouraging students to engage in troubleshooting. The importance of troubleshooting was made evident to students by the instructor emphasizing it as an inevitable and central part of experimentation. This lab transformation also required that students perform work that was `above and beyond' the scope of the assigned experimental work for part of the course credit. While the technological aspects of the transformation were received well by a majority of students, our observations during the initial implementation suggested a need for some modifications to instructional practices in order to improve the learning and experiences for all students. In particular, we find that many students can benefit from additional scaffolding in order to complete `above and beyond' work. Similarly, we find that students in general, and underrepresented students such as women in particular, may need thoughtful intervention from the instructor, e.g., in order to avoid becoming isolated when the lab work is designed for pair work. Otherwise, some students may be left to work alone with a disproportionate work-load if students choose their own partners.

Abstract:This paper shares our experience in a three-session online workshop using a new web-based data programming environment, Marti. The programming environment uses a card-based programming strategy in both unplugged and online activities. Educators can use the physical cards in a board-game style or use the programming environment's mobile application to scan these cards and render the final visualization on their phones/tablets. The web environment also uses visual draggable cards for programming that can manipulate and visualize data. We used Marti and its offered unplugged activities in three sessions with 12 middle school and 12 high school students, focusing on the data fundamentals, analysis, and visualization. We assert that integrating unplugged-style pseudo-code creation and supporting a similar experience using the available devices have considerable potential for delivering equal and affordable data programming education for all.

Abstract:The facilitation of STEM education can be enhanced by the provision of opportunities for learners to gain a better understanding of science through the utilization of tangible and visual examples. The objective of this work is to present an account of our experiences and activities carried out in Italian schools with this novel approach. The selection of projects and experiences discussed --in which students develop a range of core competencies such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, experimentation, prototyping, communication and problem-solving; include tangible complex 3D printed structures, large micro-controller board replicas and the visualization of wind dynamics and tiny invisible elementary particles among others. These hands-on experiences demonstrate the benefits on the use of digital fabrication technologies implemented within a FabLab for STEM learning.

Examining the didactic contract when handheld technology is permitted in the mathematics classroom

Abstract:The use of mathematics analysis software (MAS) including handheld scientific and graphics calculators offers a range of pedagogical opportunities. Its use can support change in the didactic contract. MAS may become an alternative source of authority in the classroom empowering students to explore variation and regularity, manipulate simulations and link representations. Strategic use may support students to direct their own learning and explore mathematics, equipping them to share their findings with the teacher and the class with more confidence. This paper offers a framework for examining the impact of the use of MAS on the didactic contract. Lessons were observed in 12 grade 10 classes, with 12 different teachers new to MAS. MAS technology was used with a variety of didactic contracts, mostly traditional. The framework drew attention to many ways in which the teaching differed. Analysis of the didactic contract must consider both the teaching of mathematics and of technology skills, because these have different characteristics. In all classes, both teachers and students saw the teacher as having a responsibility to teach technology skills. Students saw technology skills as the main point of the lesson, but the teachers saw the lesson as primarily teaching mathematics—one of the mismatches which may need negotiation to adapt didactic contracts to teaching with MAS.

Abstract:This article argues that The Eclectic Curriculum in American Music Education warrants consideration within current elementary general music education contexts. One way to consider this foundational text is in terms of how technology can serve as a tool for enriching instructional approaches. While handheld technology use within these approaches is uncommon, current educational contexts may invite integration. Integration of technology within the Dalcroze, Kodály, and Orff instructional approaches operates at a tertiary level. Each approach articulates a primary focus and states a unique secondary function of instrument use. Technology is supportive of and integrative to the primary foci and secondary functions, granting it tertiary status. The article describes ways handheld technology as a supplemental tool can provide feedback to students on the primary focus and enrich the secondary instrumental function. Handheld technology presents an opportunity to scaffold students’ musical learning, enhance self-expression, and explore timbral relationships.

Examining potentialities of handheld technology in students’ academic attainments

Abstract:An increasing number of K‐12 school teachers have been using handheld, or palmtop, computers in the classroom as an integral means of facilitating education due to the flexibility, mobility, interactive learning capability, and comparatively inexpensive cost. This study involved two experiments in handheld computers: (a) a comparison of the process of learning English spelling in fourth grade students using handheld computers and fourth grade students who did not use handheld computers, and (b) a comparison between the test results of fifth grade students’ dividing fractions using handheld computers and fifth grade students dividing fractions using paper‐and‐pencil. The results revealed that fourth grade students who used handheld computers to learn spelling had significantly higher test scores than those students who learned spelling without handheld computers. Fifth grade students who used handheld computers when taking a dividing fractions test scored significantly higher than those students who used paper‐and‐pencil for the same test. This study concluded that handheld devices could be an addition to learning technologies in elementary schools. Les résultats ont révélé que les élèves de quatrième année qui utilisaient ces ordinateurs portables pour apprendre l’orthographe obtenaient aux tests des scores nettement plus élevés que les élèves qui apprenaient l’orthographe sans ordinateursde poche. Los alumnos de quinto año que usaban los ordenadores móviles cuando pasaban un test de división de fracciones conseguían resultados claramente más altos que los de esos alumnos que habían usado papel y lápiz para el mismo test. Abstract:AbstractUsing the theoretical constructs of double instrumental genesis and instrumental distance, in this article, I examine case studies of four primary school teachers (K–5) in British Columbia, Canada, who implemented the multi-touch, iPad application TouchTimes (hereafter, TT) into their mathematics teaching. This novel digital technology provides embodied and relational experiences of multiplication through two different dynamic multiplicative models. In interviews, these teachers shared their personal experiences learning about this relatively new digital application themselves, the obstacles they encountered and their experiences integrating TT into their instructional repertoires as a tool for student learning. My aim was to identify specific episodes in which transitions occurred during the implementation of technology-enhanced mathematics lessons and to highlight how instrumental distance influenced the teachers’ professional instrumental genesis. These episodes focus on (1) the internal shifts in thinking that the teachers experience personally and professionally while undergoing double instrumental genesis; (2) transitions across the two different microworlds that comprise TT, and the different multiplicative models portrayed by each of them; and (3) transitioning beyond the dynamic multiplicative models portrayed by TT towards mathematical activities with a static medium. My analysis indicates that these transitions are multi-faceted and complex, that the personal and professional instrumental geneses that teachers undergo may be closely intertwined and that, when speaking of TT, they clearly differentiate between ways of teaching with it and how students may learn using this technology.

Abstract:Studies suggest that the exposure to STEM learning opportunities early in life is important because the development of STEM skills can further students' interest and educational attainment in STEM, expanding their career choices later in life. Smart mobile devices have become ubiquitous in schools and have been transforming educational practices at all ages and levels and almost all over the world. At the same time, there is evidence that teacher education departments lack the knowledge and skill to teach pre-service teachers about using these devices in their daily teaching practice. The findings of this chapter underline the need to develop teaching and learning processes that go beyond a mere transmission of the technical knowledge required to use mobile technologies with educational purposes, focusing instead on raising students' awareness about the educational benefits that the integration of mobile technologies can bring to formal education.

Abstract:This study investigates how an urban, high school physics class responded to the inclusion of a classroom set of iPads and associated applications, such as screencasting. The participatory roles of students and the expressions of their relationships to physics were examined. Findings suggest that iPad technology altered classroom norms and student relationships to include increased student agency and use of evidence. Findings also suggest that the iPad provided a connection between physics, social status, and play. Videos, observations, interviews, and survey responses were analyzed to provide insight into the nature of these changes.

Abstract:This paper reports on nine elementary, middle, and high school in-service teachers who participated in a series of workshops aimed at exploring the wonder, joy, and beauty of mathematics through the creation and application of digitally fabricated tools (i.e., laser-cut and 3D printed). Using the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework to investigate technological, pedagogical, contextual, and content knowledge, researchers applied qualitative methods to uncover the affordances and constraints of teaching and learning math concepts with digitally fabricated tools and examined how the workshops supported broadening participation in mathematics by focusing on the connections between mathematical inquiry, nature, and the arts. Affordances include opportunities for hands-on learning, visual support at the secondary level, and real-world connections that go beyond the state standards. Barriers include purchasing a laser-cutter, ventilation and noise issues, time constraints, misalignment with school and district priorities, and a lack of administrative support. All participants indicated that they were interested in additional workshops focused on designing their own digitally fabricated mathematics tools that better align with their grade level(s) and standards.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid global uptake of mobile technology is reflected in pioneering N ew Z ealand schools. Teachers of classes where each student uses a mobile device were surveyed on how frequently they use various mobile learning activities and asked to describe the new pedagogical opportunities it offers. The teachers' m‐learning pedagogical approaches and the extent of transformation were considered. This study finds the main use of mobile technology is to enhance learning with task activities and information access; however, innovative content production is also common. The opportunities for pedagogical transformation that collaborative learning offers appear to be partially realised, but the potential for situative learning using authentic contexts and experts seems to be largely unrealised. Presently, transformative pedagogical approaches are not prevalent despite collaborative inquiry and situative approaches with authentic contexts being linked to developing higher order thinking and fostering future focused skills, which are a key focus for educators. The use of one‐to‐one mobile technology in the classroom is a new educational practice with significant potential. This study provides a snapshot to contribute to building the necessary body of work on m‐learning pedagogical transformation.

Abstract:Assistive technologies are frequently used to help disabled students to access core and expanded core curricula and to improve their functional, communication and literacy skills. Non-optical low vision devices and optical and tactile graphics technologies are some of the assistive technologies used by visually impaired students in today's classrooms. In this study, we used a smartphone app, a Braille printer, and the Braille Spotdot embosser to design and develop a science activity to teach the concept of constant speed to a visually impaired student and two non-impaired peers using the 5E instructional model. The goal of the activity was to help students develop such skills as defining a problem, designing an experiment, and drawing graphs as well as to learn to compute unit rates and comprehend proportional relationships among variables.
App creation in schools for different curricula subjects - lesson learned

Abstract:The next generation of jobs will be characterized by an increased demand for people with computational and problem solving skills. In Austria, computer science topics are underrepresented in school curricula hence teaching time for these topics is limited. From primary through secondary school, only a few opportunities exist for young students to explore programming. Furthermore, today's teachers are rarely trained in computer science, which impairs their potential to motivate students in these courses. Within the "No One Left Behind" (NOLB) project, teachers were supported to guide and assist their students in their learning processes by constructing ideas through game making. Thus, students created games that referred to different subject areas by using the programming tool Pocket Code, an app developed at Graz University of Technology (TU-Graz). This tool helps students to take control of their own education, becoming more engaged, interested, and empowered as a result. To ensure an optimal integration of the app in diverse subjects the different backgrounds (technical and non-technical) of teachers must be considered as well. First, teachers were supported to use Pocket Code in the different subjects in school within the feasibility study of the project. Observed challenges and difficulties using the app have been gathered. Second, we conducted interviews with teachers and students to underpin our onsite observations. As a result, it was possible to validate Pocket Codes' potential to be used in a diverse range of subjects. Third, we focused especially on those teachers who were not technically trained to provide them with a framework for Pocket Code units, e.g., with the help of structured lesson plans and predefined templates.

Teaching to Learn: iPads as Tools for Transforming Physics Student Roles

Abstract:Students who serve as Learning Assistants (LAs) and have the opportunity to teach the content they are learning, while also studying effective teaching pedagogy, have demonstrated achievement gains in advanced content courses and positive shifts in attitudes about learning science [V. Otero, S. Pollock & N. Finkelstein, Amer J Physics 78, 11 (2010)]. Although the LA experience is also valuable for high school students, the tight schedule and credit requirements of advanced high school students limit opportunities for implementing traditional LA programs at the high school level. In order to provide high school physics students with an LA-like experience, iPads were used as tools for students to synthesize screencast video tutorials for students to access, review and evaluate. The iPads were utilized in a one-to-one tablet-to-student environment throughout the course of an entire school year. This research investigates the impact of a one-to-one iPad environment and the use of iPads to create teaching-to-learn (TtL) experiences on student agency and attitudes toward learning science. Abstract:The vast development and expansion of educational technology has led to the deconstruction of various barriers and challenges that the traditional approaches were incapable of overcoming. However, a field that still holds a great deal of interest and needs to be strengthened concerns the practices that surround mathematics education. Digital learning tools can provide a partial solution to this problem. In this study, we introduce a curriculum-driven digital practicing tool which accommodates diverse learning styles and educational needs. The representative sample of the pilot included 135 third-grade primary school students, randomly split in two groups, who participated in the 8-week experiment. The findings suggest that the digital practicing path can facilitate the development of subject mastery and increase the accuracy of arithmetic fact calculations. In addition, the use of learning analytics tools can facilitate the knowledge acquisition process and prevent learners from developing misconceptions toward the learning subject.

Abstract:This article presents a study that analyses the types of activity used to teach the curriculum in primary education, and the use made accordingly of digital and analogue resources. The research's purpose was to discover whether there are any differentiated patterns of activity in the teaching of these subjects, and whether they are linked to the use of ICT/non-ICT resources. A multiple case study was conducted with 10 primary teachers, with three schooldays being recorded over the 2018–2019 school year, which provided 132 hours of recordings. The research design involved the use of mixed methods. The results reveal a differentiated use of patterns of activity linked to the subjects that make up the curriculum in primary education, as well as a differentiated use of ICT and non-ICT resources when teaching these subjects. The study includes the need to investigate the process of transforming/transposing the academic content into effective classroom teaching practices.
