Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been recently investigated intensively for potential hyperthermia treatment of malignant cancer cells in combination with radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) fields/waves. However, many controversial results have been reported on whether GNPs can be heated by EM fields. It has been suggested that aggregated GNPs may be heated significantly by a RF field, which however has not been examined experimentally. This work proposes a novel electric treatment of mono-dispersed particles to create aggregated GNPs, and conducts an investigation of their bulk heating behavior under a 655 nm laser and a 13.56 MHz RF electric field. It is revealed that the heating rates of aggregated colloids are significantly higher than those of mono-dispersed GNPs for the 655 nm laser, whereas at 13.56 MHz, the heating effects are barely noticeable for both aggregated and mono-dispersed colloids. Various possible reasons are discussed and the negligible electric field enhancement is believed to be responsible at 13.56 MHz. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
Phonon-Assisted Radiofrequency Absorption by Gold Nanoparticles Resulting in Hyperthermia

Abstract:It is suggested that in gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of about 5 nm sizes used in the radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia, an absorption of the RF photon by the Fermi electron occurs with involvement of the longitudinal acoustic vibrational mode (LAVM), the dominating one in the distribution of vibrational density of states (VDOS). This physical mechanism helps to explain two observed phenomena: the size dependence of the heating rate (HR) in GNPs and reduced heat production in aggregated GNPs. The argumentation proceeds within the one-electron approximation, taking into account the discretenesses of energies and momenta of both electrons and LAVMs. The heating of GNPs is thought to consist of two consecutive processes: first, the Fermi electron absorbs simultaneously the RF photon and the LAVM available in the GNP; hereafter the excited electron gets relaxed within the GNP’s boundary, exciting a LAVM with the energy higher than that of the previously absorbed LAVM. GNPs containing the Ta and/or Fe impurities are proposed for the RF hyperthermia as promising heaters with enhanced HRs, and GNPs with rare-earth impurity atoms are also brought into consideration. It is shown why the maximum HR values should be expected in GNPs with about 5–7 nm size.
Experimental study of electromagnetic heating of gold nanoparticle dispersions at 200 kHz

Abstract:Aim: Remote heating of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) by low frequency electromagnetic field has been recently proposed as a potential thermal treatment for deep-seated tumors - almost all the studies were conducted on a commercial device at 13.56 MHz. This work investigates the electromagnetic heating of GNP dispersions at 200 kHz. Methods: GNPs are synthesized based on an improved citrate reduction method, and the influence of particle concentration and impurity on the bulk heating effect at 200 kHz are investigated. Results & conclusion: The results demonstrate that GNPs alone can contribute to an appreciable bulk temperature increase, which increases with GNP concentration in a nonlinear fashion. For a nonmagnetic material, the specific absorption rate of GNPs can reach that of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticle dispersions. Such a result cannot be explained by either the Joule heating or hysteresis heating mechanism.

Abstract:Electromagnetic radiofrequency heating of gold nanoparticles for use in remote hyperthermia cancer treatment has seen rapidly growing interest in the last decade. While most of the focus has been on studying spherical nanoparticles, recent research suggests that using ellipsoidal particles can significantly increase the Joule heating. However, it is still unclear how the presence of ligands affects the electromagnetic absorption in this context. In the present paper, we study the effects of adding a surface coating to ellipsoidal gold nanoparticles, and investigate the change in absorption with respect to coating properties, particle aspect-ratio, and frequency. Both the case of a single nanoparticle and the case of a suspension of nanoparticles are studied. The introduction of a dielectric coating increases the absorption rate for particles with lower aspect ratios and at lower frequencies, potentially improving the flexibility of parameter configurations that can be used in treatment. A thermal analysis reveals that the absorption in the parameter space of lower aspect ratios translate to negligible differential temperature increase, even with the addition of coating. Furthermore, nanoparticles with very large aspect ratios (nanowires) generate less heat with coating compared to no coating. Thus, it is shown that the presence of coating and choice of aspect ratio, have significant impact on the absorption response and must be accounted for in the analysis of ligand-capped nanoparticles. The findings in the present paper provide a valuable tool to optimize the coated gold nanoparticle design parameters, in order to secure clinically useful differential heating.

Radiative heat transfer between metallic nanoparticle clusters in both near field and far field

Abstract:Micro-nanoparticle systems have wide applications in thermal science and technology. In dense particulate system, the particle separation distance may be less than the characteristic thermal wavelength and near field effect will be significant and become a key factor to influence thermal radiation transfer in the system. In this study, radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two metallic nanoparticles clusters are explored using many-body radiative heat transfer theory implemented with the coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) approach, which effectively takes into account the contribution of magnetic polarization of metallic nanoparticles on heat exchange. As the focus, the effects of magnetic polarization and many-body interaction (MBI) on RHT were analyzed. The effects of fractal dimension and relative orientation of the clusters were also analyzed. Results show that the contribution of magnetically polarized eddy-current Joule dissipation dominates the RHT between Ag nanoparticle clusters. If only electric polarization (EP approach) is considered, the heat conductance will be underestimated as compared with the CEMD approach in both near field and far field regime. The effect of MBI on the RHT between Ag nanoparticle clusters is unobvious at room temperature, which is quite different from the SiC nanoparticle clusters. For the latter, MBI tends to suppress RHT significantly. The relative orientation has remarkable effect on radiative heat flux for clusters with lacy structure when the separation distance is in the near field. While for the separation distance in far field, both the relative orientation and the fractal dimension has a weak influence on radiative heat flux. This work will help the understanding of thermal transport in dense particulate system.

Hot Carriers from Intra- and Interband Transitions in Gold-Silver Alloy Nanoparticles

Abstract:Hot electrons and holes generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanoparticles can be harnessed for applications in solar energy conversion and sensing. In this paper, we study the generation of hot carriers in large spherical gold-silver alloy nanoparticles using a recently developed atomistic modelling approach that combines a solution of Maxwell's equations with large-scale tight-binding simulations. We find that hot-carrier properties depend sensitively on the alloy composition. Specifically, nanoparticles with a large gold fraction produce hot carriers under visible light illumination while nanoparticles with a large silver fraction require higher photon energies to produce hot carriers. Moreover, most hot carriers in nanoparticles with a large gold fraction originate from interband transitions which give rise to energetic holes and "cold" electrons near the Fermi level. Increasing the silver fraction enhances the generation rate of hot carriers from intraband transitions which produce energetic electrons and "cold" holes. These findings demonstrate that alloy composition is a powerful tuning parameter for the design of nanoparticles for applications in solar energy conversion and sensing that require precise control of hot-carrier properties.

Radial dependence of ionization clustering around a gold nanoparticle

Abstract:This work explores the enhancement of ionization clusters around a gold nanoparticle (NP), indicative of the induction of DNA lesions, a potential trigger for cell-death. Monte Carlo track structure simulations were performed to determine (a) the fluence of incident photons and electrons in water around a gold NP under charged particle equilibrium conditions and (b) the density of ionization clusters produced on average as well as conditional on the occurrence of at least one interaction in the nanoparticle using Associated Volume Clustering. Absorbed dose was determined for comparison with a recent benchmark intercomparison. Reported quantities are normalized to primary fluence, allowing to establish a connection to macroscopic dosimetric quantities. The modification of the electron fluence spectrum by the gold NP is minor and mainly occurs at low energies. The net fluence of electrons emitted from the NP is dominated by electrons resulting from photon interactions. Smaller NPs cause noticeable peaks in the conditional frequency of clusters at distances around 50 nm to 100 nm from the NP surface. The number of clusters per energy imparted is increased at distances of up to 150 nm, and accordingly the enhancement in clustering notably surpasses that of dose enhancement. This work highlights the necessity of nanodosimetric analysis and suggests increased ionization clustering near the nanoparticles due to the emission of low energy Auger electrons. Whereas the electron component of the radiation field plays an important role in determining the background contribution to ionization clustering and energy imparted, the dosimetric effects of nanoparticles are governed by the interplay of secondary electron production by photon interaction (including low energy Auger electrons) and their ability to leave the nanoparticle.

Abstract:<p>Here we report radio frequency (RF) heating patterns that may be generalized across a wide range of nanomaterial-loaded materials. We used experiments and simulation to show that the heating rates are non-monotonically related with the conductivity of the materials. A major finding is that the maximum heating rate occurs at an optimum DC surface conductivity that is the same for thin films made using carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and laser-induced graphene. We also determine that this maximum heating is closely associated with the percolation threshold in a given structure. We show similar patterns for nano-filled thick thermoplastic parts as well. These findings can be used to optimize RF heating by tuning the bulk dielectric properties of the nanomaterial structures. Optimization of RF heating would lead to enhanced efficiency in RF-based material processing techniques being developed for automotive, aerospace, and additive manufacturing industries.</p>

Abstract:The interpretation of helium ion microscopy (HIM) images of crystalline metal clusters requires microscopic understanding of the effects of He ion irradiation on the system, including energy deposition and associated heating, as well as channeling patterns. While channeling in bulk metals has been studied at length, there is no quantitative data for small clusters. We carry out molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the behavior of gold nanoparticles with diameters of 5-15 nm under 30 keV He ion irradiation. We show that impacts of the ions can give rise to substantial heating of the clusters through deposition of energy into electronic degrees of freedom, but it does not affect channeling, as clusters cool down between consecutive impact of the ions under typical imaging conditions. At the same time, high temperatures and small cluster sizes should give rise to fast annealing of defects so that the system remains crystalline. Our results show that ion-channeling occurs not only in the principal low-index, but also in the intermediate directions. The strengths of different channels are specified, and their correlations with sputtering-yield and damage production is discussed, along with size-dependence of these properties. The effects of planar defects, such as stacking faults on channeling were also investigated. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the analysis of HIM images of metal clusters.
Suggested design of gold-nanoobjects-based terahertz radiation source for biomedical research

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) may serve as "devices" to emit electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz (THz) range, whereby the energy is delivered by radio frequency or microwave photons which won't by themselves induce transitions between sparse confinement-shaped electron levels of a GNP, but may borrow the energy from longitudinal acoustic phonons to overcome the confinement gap. Upon excitation, the Fermi electron cannot relax otherwise than via emitting a THz photon, the other relaxation channels being blocked by force of shape and size considerations. Within this general scope that has been already outlined earlier, the present work specifically discusses two-phonon processes, namely (i) a combined absorption-emission of two phonons from the top of the longitudinal acoustic branch, and (ii) an absorption of two such phonons with nearly identical wavevectors. The case (i) may serve as a source of "soft" THz radiation (at ~0.54 THz), the case (ii) the "hard" THz radiation at 8.7 THz. Numerical estimates are done for crystalline particles in the shape of rhombicuboctahedra, of 5 - 7 nm "diameter". A technical realisation of this idea is briefly discussed, assuming the deposition of GNPs onto / within the substrate of Teflon, the material sustaining high temperatures and transparent in the THz range.

Energy Absorption of Gold Nanoshells in Hyperthermia Therapy

Abstract:The unique optical characteristics of a gold nanoshell motivate the application of nanoshell-based hyperthermia in drug delivery and cancer treatment. However, most of our understanding on energy absorption and heat transfer is still focused on individual particles, which may not be accurate for nanoshell aggregates in a real application due to the strong optical interaction of nanoshells. This paper investigates the relationship between the optical interaction and the interparticle distance in the visible and near-infrared regions by means of a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The objective is to explore the energy transportation mechanism, which is critical for hyperthermia therapy. From the numerical simulation results of different forms of nanoshell aggregates, including individual nanoshells, 1-D chains, 2-D arrays, and 3-D clusters, it was found that the interparticle distance plays a crucial role from the maximal absorption point of view. The interparticle distance affects both field enhancement and surface plasmon resonance position. The accurate prediction of energy absorption also helps the way nanoshells are populated in the tu mor cell so as to prevent heat damage to healthy tissues in clinic applications. In the case of 3-D clusters, the laser energy decays exponentially along the wave propagation, and the penetration depth greatly depends on the interparticle distance. The closer the nanoshells are placed, the shorter the penetration depth is. The maximal total length for the laser penetration through the shell of gold nanoparticles is about a few hundred to several nanometers. The actual penetration depth primarily depends not only on the interparticle distance, but also on the size of the nanoshells as well as other factors. Since the absorption energy is concentrated on the surface clusters of nanoparticles, heat transfer mechanisms in metal-nanoparticles-based hyperthermia will differ from that in other hyperthermia. The information obtained from this paper will serve as a basis for further study of heat transfer in metal-nanoparticles-based hyperthermia.

Abstract:In the 21st century, new and alternative non-radioactive methods for cancer treatment have been developed. One of this is magnetic hyperthermia (MH), which is based on the ability of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) to transduce electromagnetic energy into heat. If MNP are inside cancer cells, heat induces cells death. The success of HM as cancer therapy depends on two factors, first, the NPM properties and second, the frequency and amplitude of the radio frequency (RF) applied field. Therefore, in this work a design of a portable radio frequency source for magnetic hyperthermia experiments is presented. The design consists of two parts, the first part corresponds to the RF source composed by a RLC parallel circuit, the capacity and inductance values have been chosen in order to achieve the RF range of frequency, and the second part corresponds to the design of a magnetization sensor circuit. While the first circuit produces the RF field, the second circuit serves as a detector of the NPM induced magnetization. The development of this radiofrequency source makes it possible to determine the applicability of an NPM system in the treatment of cancer by magnetic hyperthermia, opening doors for future research focused on the application of nanotechnology in biomedicine.
A simulation study on the radiosensitization properties of gold nanorods

Abstract:Objective: Gold nanorods (GNRs) have emerged as versatile nanoparticles with unique properties, holding promise in various modalities of cancer treatment through drug delivery and photothermal therapy. In the rapidly evolving field of nanoparticle radiosensitization (NPRS) for cancer therapy, this study assessed the potential of gold nanorods as radiosensitizing agents by quantifying the key features of NPRS, such as secondary electron emission and dose enhancement, using Monte Carlo simulations. Approach: Employing the TOPAS track structure code, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the radiosensitization behavior of spherical gold nanoparticles and gold nanorods. We systematically explored the impact of nanorod geometry (in particular size and aspect ratio) and orientation on secondary electron emission and deposited energy ratio, providing validated results against previously published simulations. Main Results: Our findings demonstrate that gold nanorods exhibit comparable secondary electron emission to their spherical counterparts. Notably, nanorods with smaller surface-area-to-volume ratios (SA:V) and alignment with the incident photon beam proved to be more efficient radiosensitizing agents, showing superiority in emitted electron fluence. However, in the microscale, the deposited energy ratio (DER) was not markedly influenced by the SA:V of the nanorod. Additionally, our findings revealed that the geometry of gold nanoparticles has a more significant impact on the emission of M-shell Auger electrons (with energies below 3.5 keV) than on higher-energy electrons. Significance: This research investigated the radiosensitization properties of gold nanorods, positioning them as promising alternatives to the more conventionally studied spherical gold nanoparticles in the context of cancer research. With increasing interest in multimodal cancer therapy, our findings have the potential to contribute valuable insights into the perspective of gold nanorods as effective multipurpose agents for synergistic photothermal therapy and radiotherapy. Future directions may involve exploring alternative metallic nanorods as well as further optimizing the geometry and coating materials, opening new possibilities for more effective cancer treatments.

In situ heating characterization of structural evolution and size-dependent melting point depression in gold nanoclusters: a comprehensive thermodynamic investigation

Abstract:The investigation of nanocluster behaviors at elevated temperatures is important because it encompasses temperature-dependent structural evolution and size-dependent melting points. Size-selected Au2057±52, Au923±24, Au1846±48, and Au2769±72 clusters were generated using a gas-phase condensation cluster beam source equipped with a lateral time-of-flight mass selector. Comprehensive in situ heating characterization was conducted, revealing the structural evolution and size-dependent melting point depression of AuN clusters at atomic resolution via aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM). Using quantitative (Q)STEM simulations, a comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the structural characteristics of the Au clusters. These clusters tended to be kinetically trapped in metastable structures during nucleation, which subsequently served as "growth templates" for the formation of many metastable Au clusters. In situ heating experiments performed on Au2057±52 revealed a structural evolution trend from icosahedron (Ih) to decahedron (Dh) and finally to face-centered cubic (FCC) structures, with noticeable competition being observed between the Dh and FCC structures. AC-STEM imaging revealed that the melting of the Au clusters began with the formation of molten liquid shells on the surface. The liquid shells thickened at higher temperatures, and the solid core suddenly melted when its diameter decreased to a critical size. Furthermore, the melting points of the Au clusters were linearly dependent on the reciprocal diameter. Compared with the theoretical models, it was found that the liquid nucleation and growth model is in good agreement with the experimental results, indicating its suitability for describing the surface core melting processes of Au clusters at the studied scales.
Engineering Gold Shelled Nanomagnets for Pre-Setting the Operating Temperature for Magnetic Hyperthermia

Abstract:This study investigated the fabrication of spherical gold shelled maghemite nanoparticles for use in magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) assays. A maghemite core (14 ± 3 nm) was used to fabricate two samples with different gold thicknesses, which presented gold (g)/maghemite (m) content ratios of 0.0376 and 0.0752. The samples were tested in MHT assays (temperature versus time) with varying frequencies (100–650 kHz) and field amplitudes (9–25 mT). The asymptotic temperatures (T∞) of the aqueous suspensions (40 mg Fe/mL) were found to be in the range of 59–77 °C (naked maghemite), 44–58 °C (g/m=0.0376) and 33–51 °C (g/m=0.0752). The MHT data revealed that T∞ could be successful controlled using the gold thickness and cover the range for cell apoptosis, thereby providing a new strategy for the safe use of MHT in practice. The highest SAR (specific absorption rate) value was achieved (75 kW/kg) using the thinner gold shell layer (334 kHz, 17 mT) and was roughly twenty times bigger than the best SAR value that has been reported for similar structures. Moreover, the time that was required to achieve T∞ could be modeled by changing the thermal conductivity of the shell layer and/or the shape/size of the structure. The MHT assays were pioneeringly modeled using a derived equation that was analytically identical to the Box–Lucas method (which was reported as phenomenological).

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles ( AuNPs) have been widely used in biomedicine due to their unique physical and chemical properties as well as good biocompatibility. Current research in this field has been focused on AuNP radiosensitization in radiotherapy for cancer. Extensive studies in vivo and in vitro have showed the radiosensitization effect of AuNPs. However, the mechanism of radiosensitization by AuNPs still requires further studies. Right now, the radiation?insensitive phase ( G0+G1 phase) to radiation?sensitive phase ( G2+M phase ) transition of tumor cells by AuNPs is widely considered as the main cause of radiosensitization. There are many influencing factors for AuNP radiosensitization such as particle size, surface modification, microscopic distribution, radiation energy, radiation dose, and type of tumor cells. Moreover, safety should also be taken into account in AuNP radiosensitization. Clinical trials of AuNPs have been carried out right now. More studies on AuNP radiosensitization are needed to achieve real clinical transformation.
The Critical Number of Gold Atoms for a Metallic State Nanocluster: Resolving a Decades-Long Question

Abstract:Probing the transition from a metallic state to a molecular state in gold nanoparticles is fundamentally important for understanding the origin of surface plasmon resonance and the nature of the metallic bond. Atomically precise gold nanoclusters are desired for probing such a transition based upon a series of precise sizes with X-ray structures. While the definition of the metallic state in nanoclusters is simple, that is, when the HOMO–LUMO gap (Eg) becomes negligibly small (Eg < kBT, where kB is the Boltzmann constant and T the temperature), the experimental determination of ultrasmall Eg (e.g., of kBT level) is difficult, and the thermal excitation of valence electrons apparently comes into play in ultrasmall Eg nanoclusters. Although a sharp transition from nonmetallic Au246(SR)80 to metallic Au279(SR)84 (SR: thiolate) has been observed, there is still uncertainty about the transition region. Here, we summarize several criteria on determining the metallic state versus the molecular (or nonmetallic) state in gold nanoclusters, including (1) Eg determined by optical and electrochemical methods, (2) steady-state absorption spectra, (3) cryogenic optical spectra, (4) transient absorption spectra, (5) excited-state lifetime and power dependence, and (6) coherent oscillations in ultrafast electron dynamics. We emphasize that multiple analyses should be performed and cross-checked in practice because no single criterion is definitive. We also review the photophysics of several gold nanoclusters with nascent surface plasmon resonance. These criteria are expected to deepen the understanding of the metallic to molecular state transition of gold and other metal nanoclusters and also promote the design of functional nanomaterials and their applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

A Density Functional Study of Magnetism in Bare Gold Nano-clusters

Abstract:Magnetism in bare uncapped gold nano-clusters is explored from a density functional theory perspective with scalar relativistic effects included via the pseudo-potential. The computed electronic structures of various nano-clusters reveal that permanent size-dependent spin-polarization appears without geometry relaxation for bare clusters even though bulk gold is diamagnetic. The polarized ground states for clusters are favorable due to the hybridization of the s and d orbitals, and bare octahedral clusters are expected to be magnetic for cluster sizes of approximately 38 atoms and larger. Much larger clusters will be diamagnetic when the surface-to-volume ratio is small and the core diamagnetism prevails. Moderate changes in the inter-atomic distances and cluster geometry are shown not to alter this conclusion. Contrary to LDA and EAM predictions, GGA and hybrid geometry optimizations reveal increased inter-atomic bond distances in bare gold clusters relative to the bulk lattice values. This expansion enhances the preexisting spin polarization.
