Abstract:Bidisperse mixtures of spherical grains are studied in a flat horizontally rotating container. Its thickness is a few particle diameters, so that the particle trajectories are quasi two-dimensional. We describe two regimes: At low fillings we find segregation stripes with complex traveling wave dynamics [Phys. Rev. E. 85 040302(R) (2012)]. At almost complete filling, a qualitatively different scenario sets in, viz convection rolls [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 228302 (2008)]. Irrespective of some superficial similarity to convection in shaken systems, the driving mechanism is completely different, and only partially understood [New J. Phys. 14 015001 (2012)]. Particularly interesting are single rolls in containers with aspect ratio close to one [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 118001 (2012)], which have similarities to Rayleigh-Bénard structures at high Rayleigh numbers.
