Abstract:The interest and competitiveness in sports for persons with disabilities has increased significantly in the recent years, creating a demand for technological tools supporting practice. Wearable sensors offer non-invasive, portable and overall convenient ways to monitor sports practice. This systematic review aims at providing current evidence on the application of wearable sensors in sports for persons with disability. A search for articles published in English before May 2020 was performed on Scopus, Web-Of-Science, PubMed and EBSCO databases, searching titles, abstracts and keywords with a search string involving terms regarding wearable sensors, sports and disability. After full paper screening, 39 studies were included. Inertial and EMG sensors were the most commonly adopted wearable technologies, while wheelchair sports were the most investigated. Four main target applications of wearable sensors relevant to sports for people with disability were identified and discussed: athlete classification, injury prevention, performance characterization for training optimization and equipment customization. The collected evidence provides an overview on the application of wearable sensors in sports for persons with disability, providing useful indication for researchers, coaches and trainers. Several gaps in the different target applications are highlighted altogether with recommendation on future directions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction: Events such as the Paralympic Games leave a series of legacies in the host societies. This is also applicable to the development of associated scientific knowledge, particularly in the field of sports biomechanics. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the Brazilian scientific production in the field of biomechanics in Paralympic sports during the cycle that preceded and followed the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Additionally, the study aims to provide insights for future research endeavors. Methods: The search was conducted on the Lattes Platform, utilizing the filters “Assunto” and “Doutores” and the keywords “Paralímpico” and “Paralympic.” In total, 723 authors were identified who published articles related to the topic. Subsequently, the curricula were accessed, and the articles were sorted and identified, resulting in 37 articles that met all inclusion criteria. Results: The results indicate that: a) Brazil witnessed an increase in the number of publications after London 2012; b) The majority of these productions (87%) originate from Public Institutions; c) There was a greater participation of other regions of Brazil in the production of knowledge in the area after Rio 2016; d) Individual modalities such as powerlifting and athletics were the most researched, despite Brazil's reference status in some collective modalities; e) Women remain a minority, both as participants in research and as authors of publications; f) The productions demonstrate high levels of quality; g) The most commonly used research techniques in biomechanics were kinematics and dynamometry. Conclusion: The field of biomechanics in Paralympic sports has significantly benefited from the legacy generated by the Rio 2016 Paralympics. As future challenges for researchers, the following aspects stand out: maintaining the quality of productions, expanding studies to include collective modalities, increasing the participation of other federated entities in the production of knowledge in this field, promoting greater gender equity, and incorporating new research techniques in biomechanics. Abstract:Wheelchair basketball (WB) is an increasingly popular sport that guarantees numerous health benefits for people with disabilities who regularly practice it, such as an improved quality of life and psychophysical well-being. However, WB is a contact and high-stress sport, which exposes players to frequent overloads and injuries, mainly affecting the upper limbs. Therefore, shoulder pain (SP) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder among WB players, forcing them to suspend or abandon this sport activity. This narrative review aims to summarize all the known literature on this topic and to be a starting point for further research. Firstly, it explores the biomechanical causes that lead to SP and the underlying diseases, among which the most recurrent are rotator cuff tendinopathies. Furthermore, this overview deepens the most effective and specific rehabilitation programs for SP in WB players and it emphasizes the need for further studies to trial new rehabilitative protocols using novel technologies to make them faster and more personalized. In this regard, the general recommendation still remains to perform a combination of exercises such as strengthening, endurance and stretching exercises of various durations and intensities. To conclude, the most important prevention strategies are described, underlining the need for constant sport-specific training led by qualified personnel and suggesting some insights on possible new research aimed at improving wheelchair ergonomics, stressing the importance of a multidisciplinary team fully dedicated to the individual athlete.

Métodos: Foram realizadas buscas na Plataforma Lattes, sendo habilitados os filtros “Assunto” e “Doutores”, com as palavras-chave “Paralímpico” e “Paralympic”. Ao todo, foram encontrados 723 autores que publicaram artigo(s) relacionado(s) com o tema. Após acessar os currículos, os artigos foram triados e identificados, resultando em 37 artigos que preencheram todos os critérios de inclusão. Resultados: Os resultados mostram que a) Após Londres-2012, o Brasil tem aumentado o número de publicações; b) Grande parte das produções (87%) são oriundas de Instituições Públicas, c) Após Rio-2016 houve uma maior participação de outras regiões do Brasil na produção do conhecimento na área, d) Apesar do Brasil ser referência em algumas modalidades coletivas, modalidades individuais como o powerlifting e o atletismo, são as mais pesquisadas, e) Mulheres ainda são minoria, tanto como participantes das pesquisas quanto na autoria das publicações, f) As produções atingem elevados extratos de qualidade, g) As técnicas de pesquisa em biomecânica mais utilizadas foram a cinemática e dinamometria. Conclusão: A biomecânica no esporte paralímpico tem se valido do legado gerado pelas paralimpíadas Rio-2016. Como desafios futuros para os pesquisadores, destacam-se: manutenção da qualidade das produções, ampliação dos estudos para as modalidades coletivas, aumento da participação de outros entes federados na produção do conhecimento na área, promoção de uma maior equidade de gênero e incorporação de novas técnicas de pesquisa em biomecânica. Utilizing systematic literature search methodologies, the review draws on peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and comprehensive review papers published between 2019 and 2023, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. This article synthesizes findings from these sources to outline critical developments in the field of sports biomechanics. The review focuses on several key areas: technological innovations in biomechanics, biomechanical analysis of sports movements, injury prevention strategies, and the integration of biomechanical research into practical athletic training. Additionally, the review highlights the current challenges and limitations within the field and proposes future directions for research and application. By categorizing and analyzing recent literature into thematic areas, this review offers a detailed and structured overview of the state-of-the-art in sports biomechanics, emphasizing its significant impact on optimizing sports performance and reducing injury risks. The findings and discussions presented in this review are intended to inform researchers, practitioners, and athletes, contributing to the enhancement of sports science practices and athlete safety.
The Effects of Sport Participation for Adults With Physical or Intellectual Disability: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: Adults with physical or intellectual disability are less active than those without disability. Objective: To review literature regarding sport participation in adults with physical or intellectual disability. Specifically, to examine characteristics of available studies including participants, interventions, outcomes, and impact. Methods: A scoping review was completed. Searches of 6 databases and a trial registry plus citation tracking were undertaken. Two independent reviewers screened items for eligibility and extracted data about the studies, participants, interventions, and outcomes. A single reviewer extracted data to quantify impacts of sport participation, classified as favorable, insignificant, or unfavorable. Results: 164 studies involving 11,642 participants were included. Most studies (128/164) used a cross-sectional design. Most participants were men (81%) with physical disability (135/164), and spinal cord injury was the most prevalent underlying health condition (54%). Most studies evaluated a mix of sports (83/164) in a disability-specific context (159/164), with basketball or wheelchair basketball being the most common individual sport (28/164). Physical impairment was the most frequently reported outcome domain (85/334 results). Sports participation impact was classified as 55% favorable, 42% insignificant, and 3% unfavorable. Conclusions: There were many favorable and few unfavorable outcomes for participation in sport for adults with physical or intellectual disability. More research is needed to address the evidence gaps of gender, health condition, and type of sport, and to use more rigorous research designs to evaluate the effects of sport participation. While new evidence is generated, we suggest adults with physical or intellectual disability be encouraged to engage in sport. Registration: PROSPERO registration number CRD42018104379.

Abstract:In Paralympic sport, athletes, coaches and administrators seek medal-winning outcomes. Research in the fields of biomechanics and motor control can support the quantification of performance measures and injury risk. The aim of this article is to review the state of existing research and identify gaps offering researchers and practitioners targeted paths for creating competitive advantages. This review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Four electronic databases were searched in accordance with selected terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. A custom data charting matrix was used to identify relevant characteristics. From the 3363 retrieved articles, 237 studies covering 24 Paralympic sports were included. A new metric, medal events per included study (MEPIS), was developed. Research gaps were identified in the sports studied, impairment types, gender balance, the injury reduction process, and the application of motor control research, leading to suggested directions targeting Paralympic success.

Exploring Physical Activity in Children and Adolescents with Disabilities: A Bibliometric Review of Current Status, Guidelines, Perceived Barriers, and Facilitators and Future Directions

Abstract:Background: Physical activity contributes to both physiological and psychosocial benefits for children and adolescents with disabilities. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity is notably higher among disabled young people compared to their healthy peers. Despite this, there is a lack of constructed knowledge structure, evolutionary path, research hotspots, and frontiers in studies related to physical activity in young people with disabilities. Methods: The literature related to the research of physical activity in children and adolescents with disabilities was retrieved from the core collection of the Web of Science. The annual publication numbers and the timing, frequency, and centrality of the co-occurrence network with respect to journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords were analyzed. Additionally, clustering analysis and burst analysis were performed on the references and keywords. All analyses were conducted using CiteSpace. Results: A total of 1308 related articles were included. The knowledge structure of research on the physical activity of disabled children and adolescents, including annual publication numbers, influencing journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords along with their respective collaborative networks, has been constructed. Furthermore, the research foundation, current hot topics, and research frontiers have been identified by analyzing references and keywords. Conclusions: Current research hotspots include interventions, therapies, and programs aimed at enhancing specific skills, as well as addressing the satisfaction of competence to improve motivation and the effectiveness of physical activity. There is also a focus on the development of scales for quantitative studies. Future directions may be toward personalized interventions or programs to enhance physical activity levels among youth with disabilities.

Abstract:Robotics, mechatronics, and digital technologies are advancing significantly in sports, exercise, and healthcare, and offer innovative solutions that shape the future of these fields. In Part 2 of this special issue, we examine independent research and cutting-edge developments that address new challenges and provide unique contributions to these domains. Technological advancements in assistive devices and rehabilitation offer new solutions for improving the quality of life of individuals with physical challenges. Researchers of wearable assistive devices and prosthetics continue to devise methods to enhance mobility and support physical functions, thereby benefiting both users and healthcare providers. Sports and motion analysis remains a key focus area, where innovative technologies are employed to analyze and improve athletic performance. By capturing and evaluating detailed movement data, these technologies can help athletes refine their techniques and achieve greater precision in their sports, thus ultimately resulting in enhanced performance and injury prevention. As in Part 1, the studies presented in this issue demonstrate the practical applications of cutting-edge technologies and offer insights into their future potential. Abstract:Sports Medicine and Sports Biomechanics emerged as two viable branches of research interest in the late 1960s/early 1970s due to the growing interest in the scientific understanding of performance characteristics related to human motion. Today, there are somewhere in the region of 19 and 12 research journals that publish research findings in these respective areas. In this editorial, we reflect on the key role of the Journal of Sports Sciences in the dissemination of new sports medicine and sports biomechanics knowledge and provide guidelines to prospective authors who wish to submit their manuscripts to the Sports Medicine and Biomechanics section of the journal. Sports biomechanics research was central to the Journal of Sports Sciences at its inception in 1983 and has remained so over the intervening years. Sports biomechanics has been described as ''having two aims that, at times, seem incompatible: the reduction of injury risk and the improvement of sports performance' (Bartlett & Bussey, 2012, p.xix). The growing number of sports and exercise medicine research submissions to the journal in 2013 prompted Professor Alan Nevill, then Editor-in-Chief, to propose a separate Sports Medicine section. Consequently, Sports Medicine became the latest addition as one of twelve separate sections comprising the journal's editorial structure that remained in place until 2017.

Wheelchair propulsion biomechanics: implications for wheelchair sports

Abstract:The aim of this article is to provide the reader with a state-of-the-art review on biomechanics in hand rim wheelchair propulsion, with special attention to sport-specific implications. Biomechanical studies in wheelchair sports mainly aim at optimising sport performance or preventing sport injuries. The sports performance optimisation question has been approached from an ergonomic, as well as a skill proficiency perspective. Sports medical issues have been addressed in wheelchair sports mainly because of the extremely high prevalence of repetitive strain injuries such as shoulder impingement and carpal tunnel syndrome. Sports performance as well as sports medical reflections are made throughout the review. Insight in the underlying musculoskeletal mechanisms of hand rim wheelchair propulsion has been achieved through a combination of experimental data collection under realistic conditions, with a more fundamental mathematical modelling approach. Through a synchronised analysis of the movement pattern, force generation pattern and muscular activity pattern, insight has been gained in the hand rim wheelchair propulsion dynamics of people with a disability, varying in level of physical activity and functional potential. The limiting environment of a laboratory, however, has hampered the drawing of sound conclusions. Through mathematical modelling, simulation and optimisation (minimising injury and maximising performance), insight in the underlying musculoskeletal mechanisms during wheelchair propulsion is sought. The surplus value of inverse and forward dynamic simulation of hand rim stroke dynamics is addressed. Implications for hand rim wheelchair sports are discussed. Wheelchair racing, basketball and rugby were chosen because of the significance and differences in sport-specific movement dynamics. Conclusions can easily be transferred to other wheelchair sports where movement dynamics are fundamental.
Wheelchair Propulsion Biomechanics in Junior Basketball Players: A Method for the Evaluation of the Efficacy of a Specific Training Program

Abstract:As participation in wheelchair sports increases, the need of quantitative assessment of biomechanical performance indicators and of sports- and population-specific training protocols has become central. The present study focuses on junior wheelchair basketball and aims at (i) proposing a method to identify biomechanical performance indicators of wheelchair propulsion using an instrumented in-field test and (ii) developing a training program specific for the considered population and assessing its efficacy using the proposed method. Twelve athletes (10 M, 2 F, age = 17.1 ± 2.7 years, years of practice = 4.5 ± 1.8) equipped with wheelchair- and wrist-mounted inertial sensors performed a 20-metre sprint test. Biomechanical parameters related to propulsion timing, progression force, and coordination were estimated from the measured accelerations and used in a regression model where the time to complete the test was set as dependent variable. Force- and coordination-related parameters accounted for 80% of the dependent variable variance. Based on these results, a training program was designed and administered for three months to six of the athletes (the others acting as control group). The biomechanical indicators proved to be effective in providing additional information about the wheelchair propulsion technique with respect to the final test outcome and demonstrated the efficacy of the developed program.

This review summarizes the recent advances and points out the development trends and key issues in sports biomechanics.The muscle constitutive theory and calculation of muscle force are the key points in the theoretical modeling and simulation calculation of sports biomechanics. The new testing methods play important role in the competitive sports. Among them the human key point detection algorithm based on deep learning has made a breakthrough in solving the non-contact measurement of competitive sports. The macroscopic damage mechanism of bone, ligament, cartilage, muscle and other tissues has been clarified, but the prediction of their early damage and the mechanism of cross-scale damage still need to be further studied. Intelligent wearable equipment, artificial intelligence and other new technologies have been applied to the research of sports biomechanics and become the hot topics. This review shows that the current research of sports biomechanics is developing towards intelligence, individualization and quantification, integrating with the related disciplines, and continuously promoting the development of scientific and technological innovation in sports, health, medical and other fields.

Abstract:This special issue will cover the application of markerless motion analysis in sport and exercise science research. Traditional methods for the analysis of human movement involve the use of cameras designed to assist with the identification of markers attached to specific anatomical landmarks. The use of markers requires training to ensure that equipment is configured and used properly. The correct identification of anatomical landmarks also requires extensive training and increases the preparation time for participants before data collection. Recent developments in artificial intelligence have enabled training of neural networks to automatically identify key points in the body that could serve as surrogate locations for anatomical landmarks. However, further research is required to explore their validity, reliability and application to sport and exercise. This special issue aims to capture papers that demonstrate one or more of these components and to inform practitioners. We understand that this theme aligns with the Journal of Sports Sciences' aims and scope around applied sport and exercise. The relevance is clear in the area of Sports Medicine and Biomechanics, but application to Sport Performance is also evident through movement optimisation and performance implications.

Abstract:Wearable technologies are often indicated as tools that can enable the in-field collection of quantitative biomechanical data, unobtrusively, for extended periods of time, and with few spatial limitations. Despite many claims about their potential for impact in the area of injury prevention and management, there seems to be little attention to grounding this potential in biomechanical research linking quantities from wearables to musculoskeletal injuries, and to assessing the readiness of these biomechanical approaches for being implemented in real practice. We performed a systematic scoping review to characterise and critically analyse the state of the art of research using wearable technologies to study musculoskeletal injuries in sport from a biomechanical perspective. A total of 4952 articles were retrieved from the Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases; 165 were included. Multiple study features-such as research design, scope, experimental settings, and applied context-were summarised and assessed. We also proposed an injury-research readiness classification tool to gauge the maturity of biomechanical approaches using wearables. Five main conclusions emerged from this review, which we used as a springboard to propose guidelines and good practices for future research and dissemination in the field.
