Abstract:Light‐fueled self‐oscillators based on soft actuating materials have triggered novel designs for small‐scale robotic constructs that self‐sustain their motion at non‐equilibrium states and possess bioinspired autonomy and adaptive functions. However, the motions of most self‐oscillators are reciprocal, which hinders their use in sophisticated biomimetic functions such as fluidic transportation. Here, we report an optically powered soft material strip that can perform non‐reciprocal, self‐sustained oscillation under water. The actuator is made of planar‐aligned liquid crystal elastomer responding to visible light. Two laser beams from orthogonal directions allow for piecewise control over the strip deformation, enabling two self‐shadowing effects coupled in one single material to yield non‐reciprocal strokes. The non‐reciprocity, stroke pattern and handedness are connected to the fluidic pumping efficiency, which can be controlled by the excitation conditions. We demonstrate autonomous microfluidic pumping in clockwise and anticlockwise directions, translocation of a micro‐object by liquid propulsion, and coupling between two oscillating strips through liquid medium interaction. Abstract:Microscale swimmers are attractive for targeted drug delivery, noninvasive microsurgery and environmental remediation at different length scales, among which, Marangoni-based swimmers have garnered considerable attention due to their independence of external energy supply. However, applications of most existing chemical swimmers are limited by complex fabrication, high cost, utilization of organic (or even toxic) solvents, poor motility performance, and lack of controllability. To address these challenges, we propose an approach for all-aqueous soft milli-swimmers that utilizes biodegradable hydrogels and biocompatible fuels. This innovative method achieves swimmer body generation and fuel loading in one step by simply dripping one aqueous solution into another, saving fabrication time and minimizing fuel loss during transfer. These all-aqueous soft milli-swimmers have rove beetle-like self-propulsion, which stores low-surface-energy compounds within their body for propulsion on liquid surfaces. Isotropic and anisotropic all-aqueous soft milli-swimmers are formed with precise control over their dimension, morphology, and movement velocity. Through their motion within engineered channels, intricate labyrinths, dynamic air-liquid interfaces, and collective self-assemblies, their remarkable adaptability in complex aqueous environments is demonstrated. Furthermore, the integration of functional nanoparticles endows these all-aqueous milli-swimmers with multifunctionality, expanding their applications in cargo transportation, sensing, and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Inspired by the "run-and-tumble" behaviours of Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells, we develop opto-thermoelectric microswimmers. The microswimmers are based on dielectric-Au Janus particles driven by a self-sustained electrical field that arises from the asymmetric optothermal response of the particles. Upon illumination by a defocused laser beam, the Janus particles exhibit an optically generated temperature gradient along the particle surfaces, leading to an opto-thermoelectrical field that propels the particles. We further discover that the swimming direction is determined by the particle orientation. To enable navigation of the swimmers, we propose a new optomechanical approach to drive the in-plane rotation of Janus particles under a temperature-gradient-induced electrical field using a focused laser beam. Timing the rotation laser beam allows us to position the particles at any desired orientation and thus to actively control the swimming direction with high efficiency. By incorporating dark-field optical imaging and a feedback control algorithm, we achieve automated propelling and navigation of the microswimmers. Our opto-thermoelectric microswimmers could find applications in the study of opto-thermoelectrical coupling in dynamic colloidal systems, active matter, biomedical sensing, and targeted drug delivery.
Self‐Propelled Morphing Matter for Small‐Scale Swimming Soft Robots

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing swimmers are designed integrating chemical protein motors and photoresponsive liquid crystal networks. This approach gives access to five interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via shape‐morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects, offers untethered and orthogonal power and control for small‐scale swimming soft robots. Aquatic insects have developed versatile locomotion mechanisms that have served as a source of inspiration for decades in the development of small‐scale swimming robots. However, despite recent advances in the field, efficient, untethered, and integrated powering, actuation, and control of small‐scale robots remains a challenge due to the out‐of‐equilibrium and dissipative nature of the driving physical and chemical phenomena. Here, we have designed small‐scale, bioinspired aquatic locomotors with programmable deterministic trajectories that integrate self‐propelled chemical motors and photoresponsive shape‐morphing structures. A Marangoni motor system is developed integrating structural protein networks that self‐regulate the release of chemical fuel with photochemical liquid crystal network (LCN) actuators that change their shape and deform in and out of the surface of water. While the diffusion of fuel from the motor system regulates the propulsion, the dissipative photochemical deformation of LCNs provides locomotors with control over the directionality of motion at the air‐water interface. This approach gives access to five different but interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects such as water treaders, offers solutions for autonomous swimming soft robots via untethered and orthogonal power and control.

Programmable Motion of Optically Gated Electrically Powered Engineered Microswimmer Robots

Abstract:Here, we report on a new class active particles capable of dynamically programmable motion powered by electricity. We have implemented physical principles that separate the propulsion and steering mechanisms of active motion using optically activated, patterned, photoresponsive semiconductor coatings on intricate microstructures. Our engineered microswimmer robots employ an induced-charge electro-phoresis (ICEP) mechanism to achieve linear motion and optically modulated electrokinetic propulsion (OMEP) for steering. Optical modulation is achieved by manipulating the polarizability of patterned ZnO semiconductor coating through exposure to light with wavelengths above its bandgap, exploiting the semiconductor's photoconductive properties. Unlike previous methods that rely on changing the direction of optical illumination or spatially controlling narrow optical beams, our approach achieves optical steering under uniform ambient illumination conditions, thereby greatly reducing the complexity of the optical system. The decoupling of propulsion and steering allows for the programming of micromotor trajectories in both open and closed-loop control modes. We anticipate that our findings will pave the way for efficient optically gated control of the trajectory of photoresponsive active particles. Furthermore, they will enable the selective manipulation of specific subgroups of engineered active microparticles with various semiconducting coatings having different band gaps.

Abstract:The design of artificial microswimmers is often inspired by the strategies of natural microorganisms. Many of these creatures exploit the fact that elasticity breaks the time-reversal symmetry of motion at low Reynolds numbers, but this principle has been notably absent from model systems of active, self-propelled microswimmers. Here we introduce a class of microswimmer that spontaneously self-assembles and swims without using external forces, driven instead by surface phase transitions induced by temperature variations. The swimmers are made from alkane droplets dispersed in aqueous surfactant solution, which start to self-propel upon cooling, pushed by rapidly growing thin elastic tails. When heated, the same droplets recharge by retracting their tails, swimming for up to tens of minutes in each cycle. Thermal oscillations of approximately 5 degrees Celsius induce the swimmers to harness heat from the environment and recharge multiple times. We develop a detailed elastohydrodynamic model of these processes and highlight the molecular mechanisms involved. The system offers a convenient platform for examining symmetry breaking in the motion of swimmers exploiting flagellar elasticity. The mild conditions and biocompatible media render these microswimmers potential probes for studying biological propulsion and interactions between artificial and biological swimmers.

Abstract:Underwater robot designs inspired by the behavior and morphological characteristics of aquatic animals can provide reinforced mobility and energy efficiency. In the past two decades, the emerging materials science and integrated circuit technology have been combined and applied to various types of bionic soft underwater miniaturized robots by researchers around the world. Further, the potential applications of biomimetic soft micro-swimmers in the biological and medical fields have been explored. Here, this paper reviews the development of biomimetic soft tiny swimmers, which are designed based on a variety of intelligent materials and control strategies. This review focuses on the various actuation mechanisms of soft tiny swimmers reported in the past two decades and classifies these robots into four categories: fish-like, snake-like, jellyfish-like and microbial-inspired ones. Besides, this review considers the practical challenges faced by actuation mechanisms of each type of robot, and summarizes and prospects how these challenges affect the potential applications of robots in real environments.

Abstract:As the field of soft robotics advances, full autonomy becomes highly sought after, especially if robot motion can be powered by environmental energy. This would present a self-sustained approach in terms of both energy supply and motion control. Now, autonomous movement can be realized by leveraging out-of-equilibrium oscillatory motion of stimuli-responsive polymers under a constant light source. It would be more advantageous if environmental energy could be scavenged to power robots. However, generating oscillation becomes challenging under the limited power density of available environmental energy sources. Here, we developed fully autonomous soft robots with self-sustainability based on self-excited oscillation. Aided by modeling, we have successfully reduced the required input power density to around one-Sun level through a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE)–based bilayer structure. The autonomous motion of the low-intensity LCE/elastomer bilayer oscillator "LiLBot" under low energy supply was achieved by high photothermal conversion, low modulus, and high material responsiveness simultaneously. The LiLBot features tunable peak-to-peak amplitudes from 4 to 72 degrees and frequencies from 0.3 to 11 hertz. The oscillation approach offers a strategy for designing autonomous, untethered, and sustainable small-scale soft robots, such as a sailboat, walker, roller, and synchronized flapping wings.

Abstract:Three designs of light‐driven micromotors are engineered to exhibit multimode swimming behavior that can be excited by switching between UV and visible lights. The recent era of research has been focused on attaining precise and adjustable propulsion modes in micromotors, with remarkable implications in microrobotics and active‐matter applications. This study introduces a novel design of rod‐shaped micromotors featuring light‐driven motion and wavelength‐dependent multimodal swimming behavior. The micromotors are fabricated through the Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique, which offers a flexible approach to engineering surfaces by incorporating photocatalytic materials (TiO2 and Cu2O) at specific locations. Here, three distinct designs of micromotors (titania, hybrid‐1, and hybrid‐2) are presented that are programmed to showcase diverse behaviors of movements (linear, helical, and axial rotation) when exposed to a specific wavelength. The application of light facilitates convenient control over activity and mode switching by altering between UV and visible ranges. Numerical modeling using a finite element approach is performed to validate the experimental results, demonstrating excellent agreement with the experimental findings. The present study is anticipated to be helpful in tailoring such complex micro/nanoscale advanced functional materials with intricating swimming modes desired for various applications in micro/nanorobotics.

Abstract:Organisms in the natural world receive signals from the external environment and exhibit continuous propulsion. However, creating artificial systems that can rapidly track energy sources in real-time without human intervention and electronic circuit programming poses a significant challenge. Here, we have developed a soft actuator that mimics the phototropism of plants and possesses autonomous sensing and driving capabilities. The soft actuator is based on a thermo responsive PNIPAAM hydrogel, and its uniform incorporation of light-absorbing agents imparts photothermal response characteristics. Our preparation method involves a combination of ice templating and UV cryo-polymerization techniques, utilizing water as the primary solvent. This process results in the formation of substantial microscopic pores within the PNIPAAM hydrogel, greatly enhancing the rate at which water enters and exits the polymer network. The rapid response and recovery properties of the hydrogel soft actuator allow it to quickly track and align with a stimulus light source. Moreover, it can bend to 90° and undergo continuous oscillations, representing a substantial enhancement in performance compared to conventional composite PNIPAAM hydrogels. Furthermore, the soft actuator exhibits a low dependence on the type of incident light, as it can respond not only to pinpoint laser beams but also to broad-spectrum white light. This intelligent soft actuator holds promising applications in non-contact soft robotics, underwater propulsion systems, and various other fields.

Abstract:The locomotor behavior of creatures in nature can bring a lot of inspiration for the fabrication of soft actuators. In this paper, we fabricated a bionic light-driven swimming soft robot that can perform grasping of tiny objects and achieve the task of object transfer. By adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the temperature-sensitive hydrogels can be endowed with light-responsive properties. The fabricated composite hydrogel structure can control the contraction and expansion of volume by light, which is similar to the contraction and diastole behavior of muscles. The oscillation of the fish tail and the grasping action of the normally closed micromanipulator can be achieved by the control of the irradiation of the xenon light source. The bending of the bionic arm can be controlled by the irradiation of a near-infrared (NIR) laser, which transforms the spatial position and posture of the micromanipulator. The proposed scheme is feasible for miniaturized fabrication and application of flexible actuators. This work provides some important insights for the study of light-driven microrobots and light-driven flexible actuators.

Toward a Multifunctional Light-Driven Biomimetic Mudskipper-Like Robot for Various Application Scenarios

Abstract:The systematicness, flexibility, and complexity of natural biological organisms are a constant stream of inspiration for researchers. Therefore, mimicking the natural intelligence system to develop microrobotics has attracted broad interests. However, developing a multifunctional device for various application scenarios has great challenges. Herein, we present a bionic multifunctional actuation device─a light-driven mudskipper-like actuator that is composed of a porous silicone elastomer and graphene oxide. The actuator exhibits a reversible and well-integrated response to near-infrared (NIR) light due to the photothermal-induced contractile stress in the actuation film, which promotes generation of cyclical and rapid locomotion upon NIR light being switched on and off, such as bending in air and crawling in liquid. Furthermore, through rational device design and modulation of light, the mechanically versatile device can float and swim controllably following a predesigned route at the liquid/air interface. More interestingly, the actuator can jump from liquid medium to air with an extremely short response time (400 ms), a maximum speed of 2 m s<sup>-1</sup>, and a height of 14.3 cm under the stimulation of near-infrared light. The present work possesses great potential in the applications of bioinspired actuators in various fields, such as microrobots, sensors, and locomotion.

Abstract:A MXene‐based actuator with multi‐directional phototropic self‐sustained oscillation under constant light irradiation is designed and fabricated. By regulating light intensity, the oscillating amplitude and frequency can be further adjusted. The actuator's minimum working light intensity is as low as 50 mW cm−2. Based on this actuator, various applications including information transmission, power motor, and soft robots are realized. The efforts in soft materials actuators that can generate driving deformation under external energy stimulation have promoted the rapid development in miniature sized robotics. Recently, soft actuators with continuous and autonomous actuation behavior under constant stimulation are highly sought after. Light‐fueled self‐oscillators based on self‐shadowing effect triggered by their light‐induced actuation deformation provide an effective scheme. However, grand challenges remain in light‐driven self‐actuators that are multi‐directional controllable and can operate in low power density in air. Here, this study reports a MXene‐based multilayer actuator that generates self‐sustained robotic motion upon low light intensity– 50 mW cm−2 (half Sun). The actuator can self‐track the light sources and continuously oscillate while the incident angle is changed. The self‐sustained actuator exhibits high adaptation to types of light sources, including inherence and coherence light sources with different wavelengths. Diverse applications are demonstrated, including autonomous signal transmitter based on beam reflection, self‐propelled sailboat, light‐to‐mechanical motor, and soft robots with biomimetic movements. The results offer new insights for light‐fueled self‐oscillators with multi‐directional controllability and low‐intensity requirement and its potential application prospect.

Magnetically Propelled Fish-Like Nanoswimmers

Abstract:The swimming locomotion of fish involves a complex interplay between a deformable body and induced flow in the surrounding fluid. While innovative robotic devices, inspired by physicomechanical designs evolved in fish, have been created for underwater propulsion of large swimmers, scaling such powerful locomotion into micro-/nanoscale propulsion remains challenging. Here, a magnetically propelled fish-like artificial nanoswimmer is demonstrated that emulates the body and caudal fin propulsion swimming mechanism displayed by fish. To mimic the deformable fish body for periodic shape changes, template-electrosynthesized multisegment nanowire swimmers are used to construct the artificial nanofishes (diameter 200 nm; length 4.8 μm). The resulting nanofish consists a gold segment as the head, two nickel segments as the body, and one gold segment as the caudal fin, with three flexible porous silver hinges linking each segment. Under an oscillating magnetic field, the propulsive nickel elements bend the body and caudal fin periodically to generate travelling-wave motions with speeds exceeding 30 μm s-1 . The propulsion dynamics is studied theoretically using the immersed boundary method. Such body-deformable nanofishes exhibit a high swimming efficiency and can serve as promising biomimetic nanorobotic devices for nanoscale biomedical applications.

Abstract:<p>The self-sustainable dynamic movement of soft actuators represents a continuous motion upon constant stimulus to achieve its great potential in emerging photoresponsive applications from self-propelling machines, artificial robots to advanced biomimetic devices. Conversion of dynamic isomerization of molecular motors and switches into macroscopic self-oscillation of soft materials is highly attractive but challenging. In this study, an overcrowded alkene motor with trifunctional acrylate groups is designed and synthesized, and its photoisomerization can be achieved in the liquid-crystalline networks. Furthermore, the photodynamic storage modulus can be mainly modulated by the dynamic stable–unstable isomerization of the molecular motor upon UV exposure. Thus, the light-driven self-oscillating behavior from chaotic to regular movement can be performed based on the photodynamic mechanical balance of the micro-oscillating modulus of the polymer network triggered by the dynamic reconfiguration of the motor. The results pave the way for inspirations in the development of advanced photoactive functional architectures and biomimetic actuators.</p>

Abstract:Manta rays use wing-like pectoral fins for intriguing oscillatory swimming. It provides rich inspiration for designing potentially fast, efficient, and maneuverable soft swimming robots, which, however, have yet to be realized. It remains a grand challenge to combine fast speed, high efficiency, and high maneuverability in a single soft swimmer while using simple actuation and control. Here, we report leveraging spontaneous snapping stroke in the monostable flapping wing of a manta-like soft swimmer to address the challenge. The monostable wing is pneumatically actuated to instantaneously snap through to stroke down, and upon deflation, it will spontaneously stroke up by snapping back to its initial state, driven by elastic restoring force, without consuming additional energy. This largely simplifies designs, actuation, and control for achieving a record-high speed of 6.8 body length per second, high energy efficiency, and high maneuverability and collision resilience in navigating through underwater unstructured environments with obstacles by simply tuning single-input actuation frequencies.

Reconfigurable Artificial Microswimmers with Internal Feedback

Abstract:Micron-size self-propelling particles are often proposed as synthetic models for biological microswimmers, yet they lack internally regulated adaptation, which is central to the autonomy of their biological counterparts. Conversely, adaptation and autonomy can be encoded in larger-scale soft-robotic devices, but transferring these capabilities to the colloidal scale remains elusive. Here, we create a new class of responsive microswimmers, powered by induced-charge electrophoresis, which can adapt their motility to external stimuli via an internal feedback. Using sequential capillary assembly, we fabricate deterministic colloidal clusters comprising soft thermoresponsive microparticles, which, upon spontaneous reconfiguration, induce motility changes, such as adaptation of the clusters' propulsion velocity and reversal of its direction. We rationalize the response in terms of a coupling between self-propulsion and variations of particle shape and dielectric properties. Harnessing those allows for strategies to achieve local dynamical control with simple illumination patterns, revealing exciting opportunities for the development of new tactic active materials.

A Spring-Shaped Biohybrid Swimmer Powered by Engineered Skeletal Muscle

Abstract:Biohybrid machine comprising living tissues and soft structures can intelligently respond to external stimuli and environments, and has attracted increasing attention, particularly in academia. It has become the research highlight and the academic frontier in the area of robotics. In this paper, a spring-shaped biohybrid swimmer powered by engineered skeletal muscle is developed. The biohybrid swimmer features three components: a spring -shaped soft skeleton, an annular soft bio-actuator, and a thin fin. Systematic experimental investigations revealed that the cultured annular soft bio-actuator can yield relatively large contraction deformation and active contraction force, which are necessary for developing biohybrid machines. The proposed spring -shaped biohybrid swimmer can swim toward the designed direction at a small speed. These results pave the scientific foundation to design a class of more complex biohybrid machines and systems with potential applications in health and biomedicine such as drug delivery, in situ biopsy, etc.

Abstract:Fuel-free, biocompatible swimmers with dimensions smaller than one micrometer have the potential to revolutionize the way we study and manipulate microscopic systems. Sub-micrometer, metallic Janus particles can be propelled rapidly and autonomously by acoustically induced fluid streaming, but their operation at acoustic pressure nodes limits their utility. In contrast, bubble-based microswimmers have an "on board" resonant cavity that enables them to operate far from the source of acoustic power. So far, they have been fabricated by direct writing techniques that limit both their minimum dimensions and the number that can be produced. Consequently, the size scaling of the properties of bubble swimmers has not been explored experimentally. Additionally, 3D autonomous motion has not yet been demonstrated for this type of swimmer. We describe here a method for fabricating bubble swimmers in large numbers (>109) with sizes ranging from 5 μm to 500 nm without direct writing or photolithographic tools. These swimmers follow a previously proposed scaling theory and reveal useful phenomena that enable their propulsion in different modes in the same experiment: with magnetic steering, autonomously in 3D, and in frequency-specific autonomous modes. These interesting behaviors are relevant to possible applications of autonomously moving micro- and nanorobots.
