Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between public spaces and quality of life (QoL) for older adults, aiming to identify knowledge gaps within the context of population ageing and urbanisation. Recognising the growing importance of sustainable urban development, the research explores how cities can foster active ageing and improve QoL through accessible and inclusive public spaces. A scoping literature review identifies five key QoL domains for older adults: autonomy, meaningful activities, positive social relationships, leisure opportunities, and health. To identify knowledge gaps, a review of the literature was conducted for each of the highlighted themes. The review highlights areas requiring further investigation, including the interplay between environmental design and social connections, intergenerational perspectives on public space liveliness, the influence of context on QoL and the built environment, and the value of qualitative research in this field. By contributing to the understanding of QoL in relation to public spaces through the lens of person–environment fit theory, this study aims to inform urban design, landscape architecture, and policymaking in the creation of age-friendly communities with inclusive public spaces.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to synthesize the published literature regarding the impact of environmental design on the improvement of elderly residents’ physical activity. Design/methodology/approach To provide convergent evidence about the association between facility design/management and physical activity of elderly population, searches were conducted in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, as well as in specific active living design journals such as Applied Gerontology , Aging and Physical Activity , Housing for the Elderly and Sports Sciences . The inclusion criteria for the final list were the articles that were qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies as well as systematic reviews; written in English; related to the built environmental design; wholly or partially focused on physical activity in elderly population; and published in peer-reviewed journals between 1984 and 2019. Findings Overall, 30 studies were included in the final list. The results of this review demonstrate that design interventions can raise physical functioning inside and outside of long-term residential facilities. Increasing opportunities for walkable spaces and reducing physical barriers can result in higher levels of physical activity for the elderly population. Research limitations/implications This systematic review discloses the design strategies to enhance the level of physical activity by the elderly population based on the findings of the published literature. Overall space layout and accessibility to outdoor walkable spaces were addressed to generally promote the moderate levels of physical activity in elderly population. Practical implications Increasing opportunities for walkable spaces and reducing physical barriers result in higher level of activity for the elderly population. Corridor design and interior design ergonomic considerations were highlighted in the literature. Space layout and accessibility to outdoor walkable spaces promote the moderate levels of physical activity. Abstract:This study investigated the influence of designed natural outdoor spaces and space type on the physical, mental, and physiological health status of elderlies. A total of 978 questionnaires were distributed among a population-based randomized sample of elderlies residing in Bandar Abbas city, Iran. Blue space users reported better health status. Park access was associated with physical and physiological health. Those participants who had cardiovascular diseases were more likely to visit the parks more often, while the people with hypertension visited the parks less often. Length of park stay positively was associated with all aspects of health status. In addition, the level of physical activity positively was associated with physical and mental health. The park organizations should work on establishing parks in shorter distances and consider the opportunity for elderlies to participate in social programs to encourage them to frequently visit the parks and increase their length of park stay.

Abstract:Environmental perception of the residential community has a non-negligible impact on a healthy lifestyle for the elderly. The perceived level- and actual satisfaction- of the elderly offered by the “space vitality” of the residential community is closely related to the physical and mental health for the elderly which also largely determines their quality of life. From the perspective of urban planning, it is a crucial measure to identify and effectively regulate the critical environmental impact factors of the residential community that affect the perception and experience of the elderly, to promote the construction of the age-friendly community. This paper took Dalian, China as the research range, and took the elderly as the object of research in relation to the perception of space vitality within the residential community and its associated environment-related factors. Correlation analysis was used to identify the potential environmental factors related to the perception of space vitality by the elderly. It found that the general level of the elderly's perception of space vitality has a positive correlation with many elements of the built environment e.g., the perception of the diversity, or the landscape of leisure places, which are both related to overall spatial quality. However, it does not show a significant correlation with the social environment. Therefore, useful suggestions are made on how to improve the elderly’s perception of space vitality within the residential community, particularly in prior planning and design practice. The optimization of the spatial quality of the built environment should be the core point of concern. By optimizing the arrangement of the relevant elements of the site, the elderly’s level of perception and satisfaction with the space vitality of the residential community should improve; furthermore, the physical and mental health of the elderly will be promoted in line with their quality of life.

Abstract:At present, the aging population in cities is growing sharply, and the problem of elderly-oriented urban public spaces is gradually coming to the fore and urgently needs noticing and addressing. As an illustration, we may take Dazhou City as an example. Conclusion can be drew form the questionnaires and offline visits that the elderly generally have difficulties in traveling, shopping and medical care, affected by the lack of community infrastructure, their physical condition, living habits and knowledge structure, etc. We propose to improve the adaptability of the elderly, build a comprehensive system of elderly services, create an elderly-oriented urban space as well as an atmosphere of respect for them to level their well-being index up and settle the issue of elderly-oriented retrofitting of urban public space.

Abstract:Australia's population is ageing, and a key question is how can people remain socially active as they grow older? To answer this question, this paper offers a critical review of the literature looking at the mechanisms through which an urban neighbourhood environment can influence social life, an important component of social health. The aim of this review is to develop a general framework that can be applied to the studies on the social health of the elderly. The framework illustrates the main elements that potentially promote social life, namely: a safe, accessible, walkable and relatively dense neighbourhood in addition to green spaces, third places, soft edges and streets. This framework is then applied to a small case study, looking particularly at the social life of the elderly and how it can be supported by the physical urban neighbourhood environment. Data are collected by conducting in-depth interviews with 19 elderly residents (aged 65 years and over) in a neighbourhood located in the city of Gold Coast, Queensland. The results from this study demonstrate the importance of neighbourhood design in the social life of the elderly, interviewed. The study also identifies some of the key barriers to the elderly's social interaction.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Attention to the needs of the elderly is a social necessity, and it seems that evaluating the social network and quality of life of the elderly can be useful in a better understanding of their needs. This study was performed to determine the relationship between the social network and the quality of life of the elderly in the city of Bojnoord in Iran.METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 201 elderly people aged 60 years or more were selected by continuous and consecutive sampling method in Bojnoord, Iran in 2014. Data were collected using demographic questionnaire, Lubben social network scale and LEIPAD elderly quality of life questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS 16 and using descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-test, ANOVA and Pearson product-moment coefficient.RESULTS: The results showed that 30.3% of elderly people studied, were subjected to a high risk of isolation. The highest mean in social network dimensions was in the family (19.68%), friends (12.01%) and the neighbors (9.90%), respectively. The mean score for quality of life of the elderly was as moderate to high (63.90±13.73), and among the quality of life dimensions, the highest mean was related to the self-care dimension (15.59%), and the lowest mean was related to the sexual functioning dimension (1.53%). The findings suggested a positive and significant relationship between social network and quality of life in the elderly who were studied (p<0.000, r=0.468).CONCLUSION: This study was a step toward understanding the social network status and quality of life of the elderly. It is necessary to say that health care professionals, especially nurses, display a significant role in the community to help people in this regard.

Abstract:Green space is considered as the lungs of the city. It has immense health benefits mainly for elderly people. Regular physical activity in green space considerably reduces health risk of cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, high blood pressure, paralysis, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Besides, it facilitates social interactions and promotes the sense of community among the citizens, which is very important for health and wellbeing of people, especially for elderly, because they predominantly suffer from the social isolation problem. The data on self-perceived health status have been obtained while surveying the green space users through survey schedule. About 92.65% of elderly sampled of those people who are reportedly affected by any of such diseases or a combination of multiple. Similarly, in Australia 85–90% of diabetes problems was found among the elderly. UGS benefits must be universal and this can be done through the universalization of its accessibility. This paper answers the questions as, Whether or not the health risk of NCD make elderly people necessary for visiting and using the green space? Whether or not the visit and use of park consequences better preconception on NCD related physical and psychological health? What factors restrict and motivate them to visit the green space? What would be the appropriate planning approach for making it available for neighbourhood residents? The paper finally proposes a participatory, bottom-up planning model as a planning toolkit.

Abstract:With the progress of society and economic development, China has reached an aging population. According tothe Chinese population census data, China has entered the second stage of an aging population society and has become one of the countries with the fastest growth rate of the elderly population in the world. It is expected that the elderly population in China will reach 250 million within the next fifteen years and exceed 450 million by 2050. Additionally, China is a country with uneven development between urban and rural areas. Many young and middle-aged people choose to work in cities, which leads to most rural residents being elderly. Thus, the phenomenon of the elderly living alone by themselves occurs. Therefore, the government and related experts are increasingly concerned about the physical and mental health of the elderly. The establishment of the elderly activity center is to meet the needs of the elderly cultural life, improve the level of elderly physical and mental health, and promote the harmonious development of the countryside. Many countries aware of this problem would emphasize park construction and nursing home design for the needs of the elderly. However, little research are performed on the activity center and public spaces for the elderly in underdeveloped rural areas. Design countermeasures of the public space should consider the physical, psychological, and behavioral needs of the elderly. This study summarizes the influencing factors, design principles, and design methods of public spaces to effectively meet the needs of the elderly for public activities. By creating and improving public social spaces suitable for the elderly in rural areas, the elderly can lead a comfortable life and solve loneliness issues.

Abstract:Drawing on interdisciplinary insights, this article bridges the gap between medicine and design, aiming to revolutionize elderly care through a comprehensive study of their living-spaces and the UX. Medicine was not interested in artistic/design practices. The latter disciplines converge towards the same interest, which is the improvement of the users’ life quality. The study’s objectives are threefold: Firstly, it aims to enhance the quality of life of elderly individuals by investigating their living-space and ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being. This involves identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes that can contribute to their overall well-being and comfort in their home environment. Secondly, the study seeks to preserve the autonomy of these persons, safeguarding their ability to perform daily tasks independently and finding ways to support and maintain their self-sufficiency within their living-space. Finally, a crucial goal is to prevent or delay institutionalization, such as moving to a senior living community. By optimizing their environment and support systems, the study aims to enable elderly individuals to age in place safely and comfortably, allowing them to maintain their sense of familiarity and independence in their homes. This article presents a collaboration between a geriatrician and a designer. And it proposes the analytical study of an existing living-space of an elderly person to study the UX of his new needs. Based on this analysis and previous scientific research, we will propose a professional-guide to rehabilitation of this user’s living-space, building on a standardized geriatric examination, to maintain his/her autonomy as long as possible.

Abstract:The problem of population aging is becoming more and more serious, especially under the mode of community-based elderly care, the demand of elderly residents for community public space is becoming more and more prominent. In this paper, through the study of representative elderly care communities in the United States, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, the design strategy of community public space for aging is discussed. The research content covers spatial structure planning, barrier-free design, intelligent elderly care equipment, green landscape proportion, public service facilities distribution and other aspects, aiming to optimize the community environment to meet the physiological and psychological needs of the elderly. Through comparative analysis, this paper puts forward the guidelines for the design of aging, expecting to provide theoretical reference for the development of community-based elderly care mode in the future, and build a more harmonious, stable and livable community.

Abstract:As demographic changes abound, landscape planners should increase their understanding of both elderly people’s preferences concerning nature-based recreation and approaches to consider those preferences in planning. This study aims to synthesize existing knowledge about elderly people’s preferences, namely, how they interact with green spaces, what landscape characteristics they prefer or dislike, and how practitioners can improve planning to better meet elderly people’s needs. A systematic literature review based on the PRISMA method was conducted, including an in-depth analysis of 44 peer-reviewed journal articles. We find that published studies focus primarily on elderly people’s recreational activities in urban parks. Across different contexts, elderly people seem to have common preferences: landscape features that are natural, aesthetic, comprehensible, and diverse, with accessible and well-maintained infrastructure and facilities. Moreover, interactions between people and nature may affect the relative importance levels of the preferences. We recommend that landscape planning practitioners consider both scientific evidence and local conditions that could affect elderly people’s preferences, and explore the degree to which design options may fulfill these preferences. Further research is needed to explore differences in preferences between urban and rural dwellers, to quantify preferences, and to enhance understanding of elderly people’s emotional ties with nature.

Abstract:The aging of population in China has been further deepened, and the living environment of the elderly has been widely concerned. As an important place for residents’ activities, the attached green space of residential area plays an important role in optimizing urban ecological environment, shaping urban landscape, providing recreation services and preventing and avoiding disasters. At present, the landscape space design of the attached green space in the residential area specially designed for the elderly is not in harmony with its demand intensity. Scientific planning of the attached green space in the residential area can enrich the daily recreational activities needed by the elderly, so as to better improve the quality of life of the elderly and promote their health. From the behavior characteristics of the elderly, the activities of the affiliated green space of residential demand, put forward under the background of an aging society residential affiliated green space reasonable planning direction, for the effective supply of the elderly daily behavior space, sufficient to guide the healthy life of the elderly to improve life quality and health level put forward the corresponding design strategy, try for the urban residential affiliated green space elements, structure, system function coordination optimization to provide theoretical support.

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the development of the quality of life of the elderly in North Khorasan Province emphasizing the role of participation in physical activities. Method: This study used a qualitative-quantitative research method. The statistical population in the qualitative section included a number of experts, such as sports officials of the province; professors of sports management, psychology, sociology, and geriatrics; as well as officials of welfare and health departments (n=25). In the quantitative section, the statistical population included a number of elderly referring to sports centers (n=247). A purposeful and convenience method was used for sampling. The required data were collected using interviews (in the qualitative section) and a researcher-made questionnaire (in the quantitative section). The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by 8 experts. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS (version 21) and LISREL (version 8.7) software. Results: Based on the results, the most important factors affecting the elderly participation in physical activities and development of their quality of life were management strategies, advertising and noticing, financial and economic, personal, socio-cultural, places, and facilities. Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, managers should pay special attention to the factors affecting the participation of the elderly in sports activities and help improve their quality of life by providing suitable conditions for their participation in these activities.

Abstract:Outdoor green space is an important public resource supporting older adults' active lifestyle and improving their quality of life (QoL). However, the impact of green space on older adults' QoL has seldom been comprehensibly investigated in Asia. Therefore, this study aimed to predict the impact of green space on older adults' QoL in China by conducting both spatial analysis and questionnaire surveys. A two-step floating catchment area method was applied to measure the spatial accessibility of green space to older adults at the subdistrict level. To investigate older adults' actual opinions and verify spatial analysis results, a large-scale questionnaire survey was also conducted. Both ANOVA and logistic regression were adopted to analyze questionnaire survey data. The results indicated that (1) green space was not equally distributed; (2) the possibility of a good QoL for older adults was significantly influenced by accessibility, size, and facilities of green space; (3) the possibility of older adults' satisfactory QoL would decrease with the increase in walking distances to green space and increase with their good self-care ability. These findings could provide insights for future planning to enhance the spatial distribution of green space and improve QoL for older adults.

Abstract:Urban squares are the main place for older adults' daily activities. The spatial layout of the urban square is not only related to the construction of a healthy city and the equitable distribution of public resources, but also of great significance in enhancing the sense of gain, security, and happiness of older adults. This essay takes "health needs of older adults" as the perspective, and constructs a multi-dimensional evaluation index system of urban square space for elderly suitability in terms of physiological, psychological, and social health. It also takes six urban squares in Yiyang city center as an example and analyzes and evaluates them using GIS network analysis and the entropy weight method. The results of the study show that (1) Yiyang city center squares show the distribution characteristics of "dense in the middle and scattered around", and the spatial distribution is not balanced, which leads to a small service area. (2) The overall intervention value of urban square space is mainly distributed between 0.291 and 0.710, with an average value of 0.481, and the overall intervention effect of the square is good. The reasons for differences in health interventions for older adults in urban square spaces centered on six aspects: the quality of the square space, the variety and convenience of travel lines, the tidiness of the environment, physical activities, safety, and social interaction. Based on this, this essay proposes three optimization strategies for the renewal of urban squares, the construction of characteristic squares, and the reconstruction of the urban square space system. The aim is to provide a reference for the future design and renewal of the elderly suitability of urban squares, so as to promote the construction of a healthy city.
