Abstract:The long history of life on Earth has unfolded as a cause-and-effect relationship with the evolving amount of oxygen (O2) in the oceans and atmosphere. Oxygen deficiency characterized our planet's first 2 billion years, yet evidence for biological O2 production and local enrichments in the surface ocean appear long before the first accumulations of O2 in the atmosphere roughly 2.4 to 2.3 billion years ago. Much has been written about this fundamental transition and the related balance between biological O2 production and sinks coupled to deep Earth processes that could buffer against the accumulation of biogenic O2. However, the relationship between complex life (eukaryotes, including animals) and later oxygenation is less clear. Some data suggest O2 was higher but still mostly low for another billion and a half years before increasing again around 800 million years ago, potentially setting a challenging course for complex life during its initial development and ecological expansion. The apparent rise in O2 around 800 million years ago is coincident with major developments in complex life. Multiple geochemical and paleontological records point to a major biogeochemical transition at that time, but whether rising and still dynamic biospheric oxygen triggered or merely followed from innovations in eukaryotic ecology, including the emergence of animals, is still debated. This paper focuses on the geochemical records of Earth's middle history, roughly 1.8 to 0.5 billion years ago, as a backdrop for exploring possible cause-and-effect relationships with biological evolution and the primary controls that may have set its pace, including solid Earth/tectonic processes, nutrient limitation, and their possible linkages. A richer mechanistic understanding of the interplay between coevolving life and Earth surface environments can provide a template for understanding and remotely searching for sustained habitability and even life on distant exoplanets.

Abstract:Significance The rise of atmospheric oxygen over Earth’s history has received much recent interdisciplinary attention. However, the puzzle of when and how atmospheric oxygen reached modern levels remains unresolved. Many recent studies have argued for a major oxygenation event—of uncertain cause—in the Neoproterozoic Era >541 Ma, enabling the rise of animals. Previous modelling work has predicted a late Paleozoic oxygen rise (<380 Ma) due to the rise of forests. Here we show that neither scenario is correct. Instead, the earliest plants, which colonized the land from 470 Ma onward, first increased atmospheric oxygen to present levels by 400 Ma, and this instigated fire-mediated feedbacks that have stabilized high oxygen levels ever since, shaping subsequent evolution.

Abstract:Significance Earth is currently the only planet known to harbor complex life. Understanding whether terrestrial biotic complexity is a unique phenomenon or can be expected to be widespread in the universe depends on a mechanistic understanding of the factors that led to the emergence of complex life on Earth. Here, we use geochemical constraints and quantitative models to suggest that marine environments may have been unfavorable for the emergence and large-scale proliferation of motile multicellular life for most of Earth’s history. Further, we argue that a holistic evaluation of environmental variability, organismal life history, and spatial ecological dynamics is essential for a full accounting of the factors that have allowed for the emergence of biological complexity on Earth.

Abstract:The initial rise of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) shortly after the Archaean–Proterozoic transition 2.5 billion years ago was more complex than the single step-change once envisioned. Sulfur mass-independent fractionation records suggest that the rise of atmospheric O 2 was oscillatory, with multiple returns to an anoxic state until perhaps 2.2 billion years ago 1,2,3 . Yet few constraints exist for contemporaneous marine oxygenation dynamics, precluding a holistic understanding of planetary oxygenation. Here we report thallium (Tl) isotope ratio and redox-sensitive element data for marine shales from the Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa. Synchronous with sulfur isotope evidence of atmospheric oxygenation in the same shales 3 , we found lower authigenic 205 Tl/ 203 Tl ratios indicative of widespread manganese oxide burial on an oxygenated seafloor and higher redox-sensitive element abundances consistent with expanded oxygenated waters. Both signatures disappear when the sulfur isotope data indicate a brief return to an anoxic atmospheric state. Our data connect recently identified atmospheric O 2 dynamics on early Earth with the marine realm, marking an important turning point in Earth's redox history away from heterogeneous and highly localized 'oasis'-style oxygenation.

Abstract:Atmospheric oxygen levels are traditionally viewed to have been relatively stable throughout Earth's history with several-step increases. Emerging evidence, however, suggests extremely dynamic atmospheric oxygen levels through large swaths of Earth's history. Here, we provide a new perspective on atmospheric oxygen evolution using a dynamical analysis to explore the relative importance of previously proposed feedbacks on the global oxygen and carbon cycles. Our results from a stochastic analysis of oxygen mass balance in this framework suggest there are multiple steady states for atmospheric oxygen, but only three stable states. One stable state under anoxic conditions (<10-5 present atmospheric level (PAL)), one at low (~10-3to 10-2 PAL), and one near modern value atmospheric oxygen levels. Our findings also suggest two unstable states (tipping points) for atmospheric oxygen: one around 10-5 and another one around 10-1 PAL.

Abstract:The oxygenation of Earth's surface fundamentally altered global biogeochemical cycles and ultimately paved the way for the rise of metazoans at the end of the Proterozoic. However, current estimates for atmospheric oxygen (O2) levels during the billion years leading up to this time vary widely. On the basis of chromium (Cr) isotope data from a suite of Proterozoic sediments from China, Australia, and North America, interpreted in the context of data from similar depositional environments from Phanerozoic time, we find evidence for inhibited oxidation of Cr at Earth's surface in the mid-Proterozoic (1.8 to 0.8 billion years ago). These data suggest that atmospheric O2 levels were at most 0.1% of present atmospheric levels. Direct evidence for such low O2 concentrations in the Proterozoic helps explain the late emergence and diversification of metazoans.

Abstract:The early diversification of animals (∼630 Ma), and their development into both motile and macroscopic forms (∼575–565 Ma), has been linked to stepwise increases in the oxygenation of Earth’s surface environment. However, establishing such a linkage between oxygen and evolution for the later Cambrian ‘explosion' (540–520 Ma) of new, energy-sapping body plans and behaviours has proved more elusive. Here we present new molybdenum isotope data, which demonstrate that the areal extent of oxygenated bottom waters increased in step with the early Cambrian bioradiation of animals and eukaryotic phytoplankton. Modern-like oxygen levels characterized the ocean at ∼521 Ma for the first time in Earth history. This marks the first establishment of a key environmental factor in modern-like ecosystems, where animals benefit from, and also contribute to, the ‘homeostasis’ of marine redox conditions.

Abstract:Significance Constraining the abundance of molecular oxygen (O 2 ) in Earth’s atmosphere over time is a problem of central importance for understanding the evolution of complex life. Here, we refine previous analyses of the rare oxygen isotope composition of sedimentary sulfates to develop improved estimates of atmospheric O 2 during Earth’s mid-Proterozoic era. Previous analyses of these data had predicted O 2 concentrations well below 1% present atmospheric level. Our new calculations suggest that this value is closer to a lower limit on atmospheric oxygen partial pressure unless the climate was warmed significantly by biogenic methane. The calculations also show that marine productivity cannot be reliably estimated from these data because of the slow rate of transfer of O 2 across the air–sea interface.

Abstract:Molecular oxygen (O 2 ) began to accumulate in the atmosphere and surface ocean ca. 2,400 million years ago (Ma), but the persistent oxygenation of water masses throughout the oceans developed much later, perhaps beginning as recently as 580–550 Ma. For much of the intervening interval, moderately oxic surface waters lay above an oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) that tended toward euxinia (anoxic and sulfidic). Here we illustrate how contributions to primary production by anoxygenic photoautotrophs (including physiologically versatile cyanobacteria) influenced biogeochemical cycling during Earth's middle age, helping to perpetuate our planet's intermediate redox state by tempering O 2 production. Specifically, the ability to generate organic matter (OM) using sulfide as an electron donor enabled a positive biogeochemical feedback that sustained euxinia in the OMZ. On a geologic time scale, pyrite precipitation and burial governed a second feedback that moderated sulfide availability and water column oxygenation. Thus, we argue that the proportional contribution of anoxygenic photosynthesis to overall primary production would have influenced oceanic redox and the Proterozoic O 2 budget. Later Neoproterozoic collapse of widespread euxinia and a concomitant return to ferruginous (anoxic and Fe 2+ rich) subsurface waters set in motion Earth's transition from its prokaryote-dominated middle age, removing a physiological barrier to eukaryotic diversification (sulfide) and establishing, for the first time in Earth's history, complete dominance of oxygenic photosynthesis in the oceans. This paved the way for the further oxygenation of the oceans and atmosphere and, ultimately, the evolution of complex multicellular organisms.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period (∼635 to 541 Ma) witnessed the early diversification and radiation of metazoans, in the form of the Ediacaran Biota. This biological revolution, beginning at ∼575 Ma, has been widely attributed to a temporally restricted episode of deeper ocean oxygenation, potentially caused by a contemporaneous rise in atmospheric oxygen levels. However, quantitative geochemical-record-driven estimates of Ediacaran atmospheric and oceanic redox evolution are lacking, and hence possible links between oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation remain speculative. Here, after screening for possible post-depositional alteration, we utilize paleogeographically-diverse carbon and sulfur isotope records from South China, Oman and USA-Mexico, to develop a biogeochemical isotope mass balance model to quantify Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen and oceanic sulfate evolution. Model results from all three continents indicate that Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen levels rose monotonically between ∼630 Ma and ∼590 Ma, and subsequently remained relatively stable at around 0.6 present atmospheric level for the remainder of the Ediacaran. By contrast, the marine sulfate reservoir appears to have remained relatively stable before ∼575 Ma, with a subsequent large pulse where sulfate concentrations rose to ∼8 mM. These quantitative results indicate that Ediacaran oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation were decoupled, which is consistent with published geochemical records. We propose that the early Ediacaran rise of atmospheric oxygen levels, driven by increased net burial of organic carbon and pyrite, may not have established widespread deep-ocean oxygenation. Instead, later pulsed input of oxidizing power (mainly sulfate) from the continents drove transient episodes of seafloor oxygenation that accompanied radiations of the Ediacaran Biota.

Abstract:While it is widely accepted that early animals originated and primarily evolved during the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian period, there remains ongoing debate over how fluctuations in marine-atmospheric oxygen levels influenced their evolution and diversification. To investigate this, we analyzed pristane/phytane ratios—a redox-proxy based on organic geochemistry—in surface sediments from the Cryogenian to Cambrian successions in South China, Oman, and Australia. The temporal changes in this proxy exhibited consistent patterns across all sites, revealing five cycles of anoxic to oxic conditions in the ocean between 660 and 510 Ma. By examining the average pristane/phytane ratios, we identified three events when oxygen levels increased. This represents a transition from anoxic conditions to anoxic-dysoxic boundary at 630–600 Ma, followed by a shift to dysoxic conditions at 570 Ma (Shuram event), and finally reaching oxic conditions at 520 Ma (Cambrian explosion). Significantly, these oxygenation events align with eumetazoan evolution. An inverse relationship was observed between oceanic redox events and positive/negative shifts of δ 13 C carb , occurring between the first and second oxygenation events, suggesting an increase in atmospheric oxygen levels. Based on these findings, we propose that there were global increases in oceanic and atmospheric oxygen levels, at least during the early Ediacaran period. These shifts in oxygen levels likely played a role in influencing the rate of evolution among early animals.

Abstract:Reconstructing historical atmospheric oxygen (O 2 ) levels at finer temporal resolution is a top priority for exploring the evolution of life on Earth. This goal, however, is challenged by gaps in traditionally employed sediment-hosted geochemical proxy data. Here, we propose an independent strategy—machine learning with global mafic igneous geochemistry big data to explore atmospheric oxygenation over the last 4.0 billion years. We observe an overall two-step rise of atmospheric O 2 similar to the published curves derived from independent sediment-hosted paleo-oxybarometers but with a more detailed fabric of O 2 fluctuations superimposed. These additional, shorter-term fluctuations are also consistent with previous but less well-established suggestions of O 2 variability. We conclude from this agreement that Earth’s oxygenated atmosphere may therefore be at least partly a natural consequence of mantle cooling and specifically that evolving mantle melts collectively have helped modulate the balance of early O 2 sources and sinks.

Abstract:Our present-day atmosphere is often used as an analog for potentially habitable exoplanets, but Earth's atmosphere has changed dramatically throughout its 4.5 billion year history. For example, molecular oxygen is abundant in the atmosphere today but was absent on the early Earth. Meanwhile, the physical and chemical evolution of Earth's atmosphere has also resulted in major swings in surface temperature, at times resulting in extreme glaciation or warm greenhouse climates. Despite this dynamic and occasionally dramatic history, the Earth has been persistently habitable--and, in fact, inhabited--for roughly 4 billion years. Understanding Earth's momentous changes and its enduring habitability is essential as a guide to the diversity of habitable planetary environments that may exist beyond our solar system and for ultimately recognizing spectroscopic fingerprints of life elsewhere in the Universe. Here, we review long-term trends in the composition of Earth's atmosphere as it relates to both planetary habitability and inhabitation. We focus on gases that may serve as habitability markers (CO2, N2) or biosignatures (CH4, O2), especially as related to the redox evolution of the atmosphere and the coupled evolution of Earth's climate system. We emphasize that in the search for Earth-like planets we must be mindful that the example provided by the modern atmosphere merely represents a single snapshot of Earth's long-term evolution. In exploring the many former states of our own planet, we emphasize Earth's atmospheric evolution during the Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic eons, but we conclude with a brief discussion of potential atmospheric trajectories into the distant future, many millions to billions of years from now. All of these 'Alternative Earth' scenarios provide insight to the potential diversity of Earth-like, habitable, and inhabited worlds.

Abstract:Significance The relationship between the origin of animals and the oxygen content of the atmosphere is a pressing issue in historical geology. Here we challenge the widely held view that low levels of atmospheric oxygen delayed the origin of animals up until 850–542 million years ago. We provide experimental evidence suggesting that the last common ancestor of animals could have thrived in oxygen levels as low as 0.5% to 4% of present atmospheric levels, which were likely met on Earth well before animals evolved. This was achieved by observing the survival of sponges, basal animals similar to the earliest metazoans, under low-oxygen conditions in the laboratory. These results encourage us to reconsider the environmental constraints on the origin of animal life.

The evolution of oxygen-utilizing enzymes suggests early biosphere oxygenation

Abstract:Production of molecular oxygen was a turning point in the Earth's history. The geological record indicates the Great Oxidation Event, which marked a permanent transition to an oxidizing atmosphere around 2.4 Ga. However, the degree to which oxygen was available to life before oxygenation of the atmosphere remains unknown. Here, phylogenetic analysis of all known oxygen-utilizing and -producing enzymes (O2-enzymes) indicates that oxygen became widely available to living organisms well before the Great Oxidation Event. About 60% of the O2-enzyme families whose birth can be dated appear to have emerged at the separation of terrestrial and marine bacteria (22 families, compared to two families assigned to the last universal common ancestor). This node, dubbed the last universal oxygen ancestor, coincides with a burst of emergence of both oxygenases and other oxidoreductases, thus suggesting a wider availability of oxygen around 3.1 Ga.

Abstract:The rise of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere that occurred 2.4 to 2.2 billion years ago is known as the Earth's Great Oxidation, and its impact on the development of life on Earth has been profound. Thereafter, the increase in Earth's oxygen level persisted, though at a more gradual pace. The proposed underlying mathematical models for these processes are based on physical parameters whose values are currently not well-established owing to uncertainties in geological and biological data. In this paper, a previously developed model of Earth's atmosphere is modified by adding different strengths of noise to account for the parameters' uncertainties. The effects of the noise on the time variations of oxygen, carbon and methane for the early Earth are investigated by using fractal and multifractal analysis. We show that the time variations following the Great Oxidation cannot properly be described by a single fractal dimension because they exhibit multifractal characteristics. The obtained results demonstrate that the time series as obtained exhibit multifractality caused by long-range time correlations.

Abstract:Oxygenation of Earth's atmosphere and oceans played a pivotal role in the evolution of the surface environment and life. It is thought that the rise in oxygen over Earth's history was driven by an increasing availability of the photosynthetic limiting nutrient phosphate combined with declining oxygen-consuming inputs from the mantle and crust. However, it has been difficult to assess whether these processes alone can explain Earth's oxygenation history. Here we develop a theoretical framework for the long-term global oxygen, phosphorus and carbon cycles, incorporating potential trajectories for the emergence of continents, the degassing of mantle volatiles and the resulting increase in the size of the crustal carbonate reservoir. We find that we can adequately simulate the Earth's oxygenation trajectory in both the atmosphere and oceans, alongside reasonable reconstructions of planetary temperature, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, phosphorus burial records and carbon isotope ratios. Importantly, this is only possible when we include the accumulation of carbonates in the crust, which permits ever-increasing carbon recycling rates through weathering and degassing. This carbonate build-up is a missing factor in models of Earth's coupled climate, nutrient and oxygen evolution and is important for reconstructing Earth's history and potential exoplanet biogeochemistry.

In turn, atmospheric oxygenation transformed metabolic evolution; molecular clock models indicate the diversification and ecological expansion of respiratory metabolisms in the several hundred million years following atmospheric oxygenation. Across this same interval, the geological record preserves 13 C enrichment in some carbonate rocks, called the Lomagundi-Jatuli excursion (LJE). By combining data from geologic and genomic records, a self-consistent metabolic evolution model emerges for the LJE. First, fermentation and methanogenesis were major processes remineralizing organic carbon before atmospheric oxygenation. Once an ozone layer formed, shallow water and exposed environments were shielded from UVB/C radiation, allowing the expansion of cyanobacterial primary productivity. High primary productivity and methanogenesis led to preferential removal of 12 C into organic carbon and CH 4 . Extreme and variable 13 C enrichments in carbonates were caused by 13 C-depleted CH 4 loss to the atmosphere. Through time, aerobic respiration diversified and became ecologically widespread, as did other new metabolisms. Respiration displaced fermentation and methanogenesis as the dominant organic matter remineralization processes. As CH 4 loss slowed, dissolved inorganic carbon in shallow environments was no longer highly 13 C enriched. Thus, the loss of extreme 13 C enrichments in carbonates marks the establishment of a new microbial mat ecosystem structure, one dominated by respiratory processes distributed along steep redox gradients. These gradients allowed the exchange of metabolic by-products among metabolically diverse organisms, providing novel metabolic opportunities. Thus, the microbially induced oxygenation of Earth’s atmosphere led to the transformation of microbial ecosystems, an archetypal example of planetary microbiology. IMPORTANCE The oxygenation of Earth’s atmosphere represents the most extensive known chemical transformation of a planetary surface by microbial processes. In turn, atmospheric oxygenation transformed metabolic evolution by providing oxidants independent of the sites of photosynthesis. Thus, the evolutionary changes during this interval and their effects on planetary-scale biogeochemical cycles are fundamental to our understanding of the interdependencies among genomes, organisms, ecosystems, elemental cycles, and Earth’s surface chemistry through time.

Abstract:Competing geophysical/geochemical hypotheses for how Earth's surface became oxygenated - organic carbon burial, hydrogen escape to space, and changes in the redox state of volcanic gases - are examined and a more biologically-based hypothesis is offered in response. It is argued that organic carbon burial is of minor importance to the accumulation of oxygen in a mainly anoxic world where aerobic respiration is not globally significant. Thus, for the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) ~ 2.4 Gyr ago, an increasing flux of O2 due to its production by an expanding population of cyanobacteria is parameterized as the primary source of O2. Various factors would have constrained cyanobacterial proliferation and O2 production during most of the Archean and therefore a long delay between the appearance of cyanobacteria and oxygenation of the atmosphere is to be expected. Destruction of O2 via CH4 oxidation in the atmosphere was a major O2 sink during the Archean, and the GOE is explained to a significant extent by a large decline in the methanogen population and corresponding CH4 flux which, in turn, was caused primarily by partial oxygenation of the surface ocean. The partially oxygenated state of these waters also made it possible for an aerobic methanotroph population to become established. This further contributed to the large reduction in the CH4 flux to the atmosphere by increasing the consumption of CH4 diffusing upwards from the deeper anoxic depths of the water column as well as any CH4 still being produced in the upper layer. The reduction in the CH4 flux lowered the CH4 oxidation sink for O2 at about the same time the metamorphic and volcanic gas sinks for O2 also declined. As the O2 source increased from an expanding population of cyanobacteria - triggered by a burst of continent formation ~ 2.7-2.4 Gyr ago - the atmosphere flipped and became permanently oxygenated.
