Abstract:1-{6-(2-Methylbenzoyl)- N -ethylcarbazole-3-yl}-ethane-1-one oxime O -acetate, an excellent two-photon carbazole photoinitiator, was synthesized with moderate yield (76.9%) starting from the successive o -methyl benzoylation and acetylation of N -ethylcarbazole, followed by oximation and esterification in the article. The structure was confirmed by 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and IR. The by-product acetic acid in the neutralization of hydroxylamine hydrochloride is effectively utilized in esterification with the aid of the one-pot process. In particular, the phase transfer technique is applied to overcome the deficiency of low reaction rate caused by heterogeneous reaction conditions in esterification.

Abstract:In order to develop new, efficient and environmentally friendly methods for the preparation of practically valuable esters of carboxylic acids, studies of the hydroalkoxycarbonylation reaction of a number of terminal olefins of normal structure (hexene-1, heptene-1, octene-1, nonene-1) with carbon monoxide and alcohols in presence of metal complex catalysts based on palladium phosphine complexes at low carbon monoxide pressures (≤ 20 atm).Two-and three-component systems based on PdCl 2 and Pd(Acac) 2 , PdCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 , Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 complexes containing a free ligand (PPh 3 ) as a stabilizer and Bronsted acid (TsOH) as a promoter were studied as catalysts. It was shown that only the three-component systems PdCl 2 -PPh 3 -TsOH, PdCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 -PPh 3 -TsOH, Pd(Acac) 2 -PPh 3 -TsOH, and Pd(PPh 3 ) 2 -PPh 3 -TsOH have the highest catalytic activity in the studied reactions. It was found that the reaction of hydroalkoxycarbonylation of α-olefins proceeds with the formation of a mixture of linear and branched products. The influence of various conditions of the reaction (the ratio of the initial reagents and the components of the catalytic systems, temperature, CO pressure, duration) on the course of the process and on the yield of the target products was investigated. The optimal parameters of the studied reactions have been found.

Abstract:Alkoxycarbonylation reactions are common in the chemical industry, yet process sustainability is limited by the inefficient utilization of CO. In this study, we address this issue and demonstrate that significant improvements can be achieved by adopting a heterogeneously catalyzed process, using a Ru/NbOx catalyst. The Ru/NbOx catalyst enables the direct synthesis of methyl propionate, a key industrial commodity, with over 98% selectivity from CO, ethylene and methanol, without any ligands or acid/base promoters. Under ambient CO pressure, a high CO utilization efficiency (336 mmolestermolCO-1h-1) is achieved. Mechanistic investigations reveal that CO undergoes a methoxycarbonyl (COOCH3) intermediate pathway, attacking the terminal carbon atom of alkene and yielding linear esters. The origins of prevailing linear regioselectivity in esters are revealed. The infrared spectroscopic feature of the key COOCH3 species is observed at 1750 cm-1 (C=O vibration) both experimentally and computationally. The broad substrate applicability of Ru/NbOx catalyst for ester production is demonstrated. This process offers a sustainable and efficient approach with high CO utilization and atom economy for the synthesis of esters.

Abstract:α,β-Unsaturated esters are versatile building blocks for organic synthesis and of significant importance for industrial applications. A great variety of synthetic methods have been developed, and quite a number of them use aldehydes as precursors. Herein we report a chemo-enzymatic chain elongation approach to access α,β-unsaturated esters by combining an enzymatic carboxylic acid reduction and Wittig reaction. Recently, we have found that Mycobacterium sp. was able to reduce phenylacetic acid (1a) to 2-phenyl-1-ethanol (1c) and two sequences in the Mycobacterium sp. genome had high identity with the carboxylic acid reductase (CAR) gene from Nocardia iowensis. These two putative CAR genes were cloned, overexpressed in E. coli and one of two proteins could reduce 1a. The recombinant CAR was purified and characterized. The enzyme exhibited high activity toward a variety of aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids, including ibuprofen. The Mycobacterium CAR catalyzed carboxylic acid reduction to give aldehydes, followed by a Wittig reaction to afford the products α,β-unsaturated esters with extension of two carbon atoms, demonstrating a new chemo-enzymatic method for the synthesis of these important compounds.
Study on Hydroesterification of Ethylene Oxide Catalyzed by Potassium Tetracarbonylcobaltate

Abstract:Potassium tetracarbonylcobaltate(KCo(CO)4) was synthesized in the presence of terahydrofuran under carbon monoxide atmosphere and room temperature.Methyl 3-hydroxypropionate was synthesized successfully from the hydroesterification of ethylene oxide(EO),CO and metanol catalyzed by KCo(CO)4.The structure of KCo(CO)4 was characterized by IR(Liquid Membrane Method).The IR(VCO) spectrum shows a strong band at 1 899.93 cm-1 indicating the formation of tetrahedral [Co(CO)4]-anion.The influences of reaction temperature,reaction pressure and reaction time on the reaction were investigated.The optimum conditions were obtained as follows: temperature 75 ℃,reaction pressure 3.7 MPa and reaction time 10h.Under above optimum conditions,the conversion of EO was 98.36% and the selectivity of methyl 3-hydroxypropionate reached 87.54%.

Abstract:Alkylation of aromatic carbamates with allyl bromide under liquid-liquid phase transfer catalysis furnished the corresponding N -allyl derivatives of aryl carbamates in 63–71% yields. It was found that the cycloaddition of arene carbonitrile N -oxides, generated in situ from the corresponding oximes in the presence of chloramine T, to the allyl fragment upon boiling in ethanol led to the production of the corresponding 4,5-dihydroisoxazole derivatives in 89–96% yields.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed decarboxylative oxidation of benzylic redox-active esters is described. This protocol efficiently converts secondary or primary aliphatic carboxylic acids into aromatic ketones or aldehydes. A wide range of substrates selectively reacted in good to excellent yields with broad functional group tolerance. Notably, various biologically active molecules could also work well, which indicated the synthetic application of such a methodology.

Abstract:Depleting oil reserves and growing environmental concerns have necessitated the development of sustainable processes to fuels and chemicals. Here we have developed a general metabolic platform in E. coli to biosynthesize carboxylic acids. By engineering selectivity of 2-ketoacid decarboxylases and screening for promiscuous aldehyde dehydrogenases, synthetic pathways were constructed to produce both C5 and C6 acids. In particular, the production of isovaleric acid reached 32 g/L (0.22 g/g glucose yield), which is 58% of the theoretical yield. Furthermore, we have developed solid base catalysts to efficiently ketonize the bio-derived carboxylic acids such as isovaleric acid and isocaproic acid into high volume industrial ketones: methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK, yield 84%), diisobutyl ketone (DIBK, yield 66%) and methyl isoamyl ketone (MIAK, yield 81%). This hybrid "Bio-Catalytic conversion" approach provides a general strategy to manufacture aliphatic ketones, and represents an alternate route to expanding the repertoire of renewable chemicals.

Abstract:Aliphatic esters are essential constituents of biologically active compounds and versatile chemical intermediates for the synthesis of drugs. However, their preparation from readily available olefins remains challenging. Here, we report a strategy to access aliphatic esters from olefins through a photocatalyzed alkoxycarbonylation reaction. Alkyloxalyl chlorides, generated in situ from the corresponding alcohols and oxalyl chloride, are engaged as alkoxycarbonyl radical fragments under photoredox catalysis. This transformation tolerates a broad scope of electron-rich and electron-deficient olefins and provides the corresponding beta-chloro esters in good yields. Additionally, a formal beta-selective alkene alkoxycarbonylation is developed. Moreover, a variety of oxindole-3-acetates and furoindolines are prepared in good to excellent yields. A more concise formal synthesis of (+/-)-physovenine is accomplished as well. With these strategies, a wide range of natural-product-derived olefins and alkyloxalyl chlorides are also successfully employed. Abstract:A clean base-free alpha-hydroxylation of beta-keto esters and amides has been developed, in which air was used as the oxygen source and SmI3 and 12 were applied as the catalysts, affording the corresponding alpha-hydroxylated 1,3-dicarbonyl products in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Abstract:The esterification of carboxylic acids is an important reaction for preparing esters which find wide applications in various research fields. In this manuscript, we report an acid/iodide cooperative catalytic method which enables highly efficient esterification of carboxylic acids with a wide range of equivalent O-H nucleophiles including both alcohols and weak nucleophilic phenols. Under the reaction conditions, both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids including those bearing functional groups work well, furnishing the corresponding esters in good to high yields. Moreover, this reaction is scalable and applicable to the modification of bioactive molecules. These results demonstrate the synthetic value of this new reaction in organic synthesis.

Abstract:An efficient nickel(0)-catalyzed highly regio- and stereoselective hydrocarboxylation of homopropargylic alcohols with ZnEt(2) in the presence of CO(2) (1 atm, balloon) to synthesize α-alkylidene-γ-butyrolactones is described. The catalyst is highly active and can be applied for the synthesis of (optically active) mono- or bicyclic α-alkylidene-γ-butyrolactones with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity and good functional group tolerance. The potential of the reaction has been demonstrated in the first synthesis of (±)-heteroplexisolide E.

Abstract:Carbonylation reactions constitute important methodologies for the synthesis of all kinds of carboxylic acid derivatives. The development of novel and better catalysts for these transformations is of interest for both academic and industrial research. Here, a benign palladium-based catalyst system for the alkoxycarbonylation of conjugated dienes under acid-free conditions has been developed. This atom-efficient transformation provides straightforward access to a variety of β,γ-unsaturated esters in good to excellent yields and often with high selectivities. As an industrially relevant example the (formal) synthesis of dimethyl adipate and ε-caprolactam from 1,3-butadiene is demonstrated.

Abstract:(Z)‐alkenes are useful synthons but thermodynamically less stable than their (E)‐isomers and typically more difficult to prepare. The synthesis of 1,4‐hetero‐bifunctionalized (Z)‐alkenes is particularly challenging due to the inherent regio‐ and stereoselectivity issues. Herein we demonstrate a general, chemoselective and direct synthesis of (Z)‐2‐butene‐1,4‐diol monoesters. The protocol operates within a Pd‐catalyzed decarboxylative acyloxylation regime involving vinyl ethylene carbonates (VECs) and various carboxylic acids as the reaction partners under mild and operationally attractive conditions. The newly developed process allows access to a structurally diverse pool of (Z)‐2‐butene‐1,4‐diol monoesters in good yields and with excellent regio‐ and stereoselectivity. Various synthetic transformations of the obtained (Z)‐2‐butene‐1,4‐diol monoesters demonstrate how these synthons are of great use to rapidly diversify the portfolio of these formal desymmetrized (Z)‐alkenes.

Abstract:The synthesis of 4-sulfonyl-1,7-diesters was well-developed, under the open-vessel condition, by K2CO3-mediated double alkylation of α-sulfonyl o-hydroxyacetophenones with acrylates, and tandem debenzoylation of the resulting α,α-disubstituted o-hydroxyacetophenones. A plausible mechanism is proposed and discussed here. This high-yield protocol provides a highly effective intermolecular alkylation and intramolecular debenzoylation via the formation of two carbon-carbon single (C-C) bonds and the cleavage of carbon-carbon single (C-C) bond.
