Abstract:This chapter deals with the outline of historical development of Chinese education from the mid-19th century to the year 2000 in its introduction. Referring to Confucian influences upon schooling in pre-modern China, it describes what kinds of interactions with foreign cultures and education have taken place. This historical reflection is followed by descriptive and explanatory discussions on the recent development of education in the era after the mid-20th century. The second part of this chapter is a chronological table of educational development from 1850 to 2000, which provides significant background on educational ideas, practices, conflicts, and dilemmas in pre-modern and modern China. After the chronological table, there are 111 texts written by respective authors on selected Chinese modern educators, some of whom are conservative, while others are radical not only in the educational sphere but in political dimensions. Of the 111 compiled in this chapter, only 4 are female. There could be many more female educators who devoted their careers to girls’ education and the liberation of women. A large number have been excluded but deserve to be invited. Nonetheless, these texts are a contribution to the continuing challenge of developing biographical studies that will support not only educational but social scientific research into modern Asia.

Abstract:This paper explores the impact of cultural diversity on early education, using China and Australia as examples for comparative analysis. Differences in educational theory and practice in cultural contexts are first described, including educational goals, teaching methods, family involvement and assessment approaches. It then explores the long-term effects of culture on children's cognitive, social and emotional development. It was found that China focuses on academic achievement and collective values, while Australia emphasises individual creativity and holistic development. Finally, recommendations were made to promote intercultural educational practices, including educational diversity understanding, home-school community collaboration, flexible assessment and intercultural communication.

Abstract:Although China has a civilized history and distinguished Confucian tradition of valuing education, special education as an institution was not established until the 19th century, when Western culture began to influence China. The subsequent development of special education has been slow due to adverse political and economic conditions. After the 1980s, a modern system of special education from preschool to higher education was formed, and since then, China has been moving toward the goals of effective inclusive education in response to global trends and the open-reform policy. Through analyzing the characteristics of the development of special education and the composition of the modern special education system in China, the authors reveal the critical social and cultural variables that underlie the development of special education: economic conditions, the Confucian tradition, Western cultural influences, and prevailing Socialist ideology. These factors have contributed to bringing about changes in special education in China, from no special education to special education starting at birth, from minimal to large-scale special education, and from segregation to inclusion.

Abstract:As a result of development and evolution of several thousand years,traditional Chinese culture and ideology gradually shaped into a multicultural system with Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism as its cornerstones.This magnificent cultural and ideological system with such a long history and rich deposits has been created,inherited and continued by certain concerned individuals.The three major backbones of Chinese culture and ideology rely on theoretical contributions and creative activities of the thinkers of these three different schools.Therefore,this paper,by looking into the relationship between Confucian,Buddhist,and Taoist thinkers and Chinese culture and ideology,aims at a deeper understanding of the process of development,major stages,and basic features of the Chinese cultural and ideological system from this particular angle,as well as providing useful reference for construction of the new culture underway.

Abstract:Introduction The recognition of culture and context as pivotal influences on the developmental trajectory of young children has been underscored by numerous developmental theories. Localized knowledge is essential for comprehending cultural universality with specificity for early childhood development (ECD). Methods Thirteen focus group discussions were conducted with professionals, caregivers, and teachers from four regions in China. Thematic content analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes, followed by coding to identify more conceptual units of meaning. Results The findings reveal distinct culture-based skills across four domains of ECD in China. These highlight a local culture that embraces a comprehensive, dynamic, and staged perspective on the development of young children. This study elucidates the multidimensional impact of the environment on young children’s development, with a focus on children’s behavioral characteristics and temperament traits, ECEC practices, and ECEC beliefs that transcend identity, culture, and the economy. Discussion This study contributes to the assessment of ECD for future cultural comparisons and enhances the scientific understanding of the interplay between developmental skills in young children and diverse cultural expectations and backgrounds.

Abstract:ECNU Review of Education, Ahead of Print. Highlights The concept of xue (学) played a central role in Chinese education. Through the analysis of this key concept, we can further explain the internal differences between Chinese and Western educational cultures and systems.By mastering numerical divination techniques, shi (historians, 史) recast their role from that of sorcerers to that of civil officials. Such a shift laid the foundation necessary for xue to transform from a venue for military decision-making into a place for cultural and educational engagement after the Western Zhou Dynasty.In addition to shaping its core philosophical spirit, the origin of xue established its significance in traditional Chinese social and cultural contexts. It has contributed to the formation and transformation of the concept of de (virtue, 德) and continues to exert a great influence on contemporary Chinese education.

Abstract:Throughout the Maoist era (1949–1976), Chinese education served twin purposes: to cultivate scientific and technological talent as an impetus for national rejuvenation and to serve as a mechanism for political indoctrination. Not surprisingly, ideological-political education played an essential function. Once Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1978, China embarked on top-down reforms that dissolved the original central economic planning system and pursued a market model. The ongoing economic reforms, with an increasing engagement with the global community, have gradually transformed the social fabric and spurred a number of societal challenges, such as increased inequality and calls for democracy (Gittings, 2006). Over the past three decades, Chinese society has witnessed a struggle for the relaxation of strict political control and authoritarian party rule, and experienced an eagerness to build a democratic civil society, especially from the intellectual and grassroots sectors. Ideological shifts and social transition have opened the door to educational reforms such as curriculum reforms and the decentralisation of educational policy, school financing, and administration (Mok, 1997). Although changes in the orientation and curriculum of moral education have received widespread attention (Zhong & Lee, 2008), very little has been written about the backstage players, Chinese scholars who have been actively committed to the reforms and have often worked on government advisory bodies.

Abstract:This study examines educational contents of folk culture in elementary school art textbooks to increase understanding of China’s traditional folk culture education. China, as a multi-ethnic nation, has established a legal basis for the preservation and protection of traditional folk culture of ethnic groups and has implemented educational policies to promote these folk cultures. The following are the results of analysis of the illustrations included in the art textbooks for all grade levels. First, illustrations related to Chinese folk culture in the textbooks are 49 in total, making up 12% of the total textbook illustrations. Second, educational areas represented are relatively evenly divided between sculpting and molding, design application, and art appreciation and criticism. Third, folk culture of 17 ethnic groups from 14 different regions are introduced in the textbooks out of 56 ethnic groups recognized in China. Fourth, educational content related to folk culture consists of folk toys, handcrafted ornaments, embroidery, dyeing and weaving, paper crafts, folk architect, sculpture, shadow puppetry, lotus paintings, rubbing, traditional holidays and traditional clothing. However, the fact that more than 70% of the images are of folk toys and handcrafted items and that some illustrations were inserted merely to arouse curiosity are areas that would need to be worked on to better
Early Literacy Education in China: A Historical Overview

Abstract:This chapter traces the development of early literacy education in China through an analysis of perceptions, concrete strategies, and important influences across 2,000 years from ancient times to the present. The authors divide their discussion into four time periods and trace different literacy components through pedagogical, social, and political lenses as they function and shift over time. The first period focuses on ancient traditions of Confucius and home schools when children were regarded as little adults and the purpose of literacy was to pass the Imperial examinations. The other three periods look at various stages of transformation, from the early 1900s to the present. During these time blocks, early preschool literacy moved from ancient practices to a pedagogy heavily influenced by the West and then, beginning in the mid-twentieth century, by Russian theory and practice. Since the 1980s, early literacy practices have begun to incorporate many Western strategies combined with Chinese cultural traditions. In each time period, the authors describe the critical cultural and historical factors that influenced children’s early literacy education and the development of preschool and early literacy pedagogy and practices. The chapter concludes with implications for the future of early childhood literacy education in China.
On the Academy Culture in Ancient China

Abstract:By tracing back the origins and changes of China's ancient academy culture,the important position of ancient academy in culture education and academic history in ancient China is revealed.Confucius initiated a new era of private education.The ancient academy began from Tang Dynasty with the function of preparing for imperial examination and having leisure through reading.With the production of Neo-Confucianism,the academy in the Song Dynasty came to be prosperous.Zhuxi built and rebuilt the academy wherever he was,and exerts a profound influence on later generations due to making the rule of White Deer Cave Academy.The ancient academy has two main functions:the primary function is humanistic education on Confucian classics,the second is an important place for developing academic thought,conducting academic communication and creation and holding together public opinion.With the propagation of Neo-Confucianism to East Asian Countries,the ancient academy system is transplanted to Japan and Korea.

Abstract:China's recent education reforms are a result of selective policy borrowing from ‘the West’. Although comparativists have highlighted the importance of cultural context in policy borrowing in China, what remains relatively under-explored is the epistemological basis for cultural views that mediate policy transfer. This article argues that the dominant cultural factors (‘cultural scripts’) for teaching in China – students' respect for the teacher, student attention and discipline in class, and the importance of practice – find their genesis and justification in a Confucian worldview. Focussing on a Chinese classic text, Xueji (Record of Learning), this article elucidates the ancient Chinese views on the nature and transmission of knowledge and explains why the ‘teacher-dominated’ pedagogy is believed by many Chinese educators to be indispensable for ‘good’ teaching. An appreciation of the epistemological foundation of culture, it is argued, is salutary in enhancing our understanding of policy divergence across societies despite their apparent convergence of global/‘Western’ educational ideas and practices.

Abstract:Confucianism emerged during significant social and political upheaval in ancient China, known as the Eastern Zhou period (770256 BCE). The teachings of Confucius (Kong Fuzi or Kongzi) laid the foundation for this philosophical tradition, emphasizing moral values, proper conduct, and cultivating virtues. Confucianism, a philosophical and ethical system originating from ancient China, has exerted a profound influence not only within China but also across East Asia. Since its inception, Confucianism has undergone various transformations and adaptations, influenced by historical events, cultural exchanges, and geographical conditions. The study investigates the geographical evolution of Confucian culture in East Asia to understand its regional dynamics over time better. This research aims to unravel the complex interplay between geographical factors and the development of Confucian thought in diverse regional contexts in East Asia. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on fields such as history, geography, anthropology, and philosophy, this study demonstrates that geographical features, such as terrain, climate, and proximity to other cultures, have shaped the adaptation and transformation of Confucianism in different regions. Additionally, the research examines how Confucian values and practices have been integrated into local cultures and societies, exploring the variations and commonalities across various geographical settings. Ultimately, this investigation contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between geography and cultural evolution, with implications for our understanding of Confucianism's enduring significance globally.

It contains excellent education resources such as excellent classic, handicraft and folk game. Integrat ing traditional culture into the education stage of children, can make children experience and appreciate the excellent culture of Chinese people from an early age, help young children to establish a good moral quality, and form a fine character. Preschool period is a critical period for children ’ s physical and mental development. Children education stage is an important part of children ’ s acceptance of education, and it is the beginning stage of preschool education, which has important influence on children ’ s future study and life development. Therefore, we should fully tap the education resources in Chinese traditional culture, provide the most classic and valuable content for children education, and build a good foundation for children ’ s future development. By analyzing the classic education resources in traditional Chinese culture and current application status of traditional Chinese culture in education, this paper provides some related measures in order to promote traditional culture in children ’ s education.
