Abstract:Virtual reality is now becoming matured for serious engineering applications. This paper describes an integrated multi-modal virtual design and virtual assembly environment within which the designers are enabled to create both the exact solid model of a part and the assembly model of a product in 3D space by direct 3D manipulations and voice commands intuitively and easily. Assembly planning can also be performed by users interactively in the environment. By integrating virtual assembly with virtual design, designers are allowed to modify components of an assembly in the same virtual environment without the need of time-consuming data exchange between virtual environment and CAD tools.

Abstract:With recent technological advances, electronic learning (e-learning) has been enabled to operate via the World Wide Web (WWW). Being an important education method, online virtual experiment systems have also been developed greatly over the last few years. These have been used to aid education in certain areas, e.g. control engineering and the understanding of physical phenomena. For the sake of aiding the education of undergraduates in an experimental engineering curriculum, we have developed the infrastructure of a virtual reality (VR) form of Web-based Virtual Laboratory (WBVL). Using this infrastructure, we have successfully implemented several virtual chemical and mechanical engineering experiments. With its four important features (3D, interactive, Web based and virtual), WBVL can make its users feel as if they are performing a real-world experiment. VRML is used to build the virtual 3D scene, and Script nodes, EAI (External Authoring Interface) and SDK (Software Development Kit) are used to extend VRML's interactive and computational abilities. Using a client/server model, WBVL has a well-defined system architecture. The set-up of WBVL is composed of a user's guide, laboratory experiments, online help and experiment reporting. The "combined model" is the most-used virtual experiment operation model of WBVL.

Abstract:Researches on using virtual reality (VR) to support computer-aided design are rapidly increasing in recent years. This is because VR techniques are very helpful in improving the interactivity and 3D visualization function of CAD systems. In this paper, we present an approach to solid modeling in a semi-immersive virtual environment. The approach allows users to create, manipulate and visualize a precise solid model by direct 3D manipulations and voice commands in a virtual environment with a 3D input device. In the approach, to make the solid model created and modified by direct 3D manipulations precise, real-time constraint recognition, propagation and solution algorithms are developed and utilized. An extended solid model is also adopted to effectively support the solid modeling by direct 3D manipulations. The experiment shows that the approach enables users to conduct solid modeling intuitively, effectively and accurately, thus can be used for both early stage design and detailed design.

Abstract:Constraint-based solid modeling is the kernel part of current CAD systems. It has been widely used in supporting detailed design and variational design. However, it cannot support early stage design and is not easy-to-use because it demands fully detailed input description of a design. To solve these problems, researchers attempt to incorporate virtual reality techniques into geometric modeling systems. This paper presents a novel approach for interactive constraint-based solid modeling in a virtual reality environment. The approach allows the designer to construct and edit a constraint-based solid model by direct 3D manipulations, and ensures the created solid model to be precise by recognizing and solving geometric constraints. To effectively support 3D manipulations and change propagation, a new constraint-based solid model is adopted. In the model, besides the normal constituents of the typical constraint-based solid model, some new attributes like shape control points, location pattern and explicit shape constraints of a primitive are defined. Guided by the location pattern, our algorithms for recognizing and solving location constraints are real-time.

Abstract:Two-dimensional modeling has been employed in most currently available pre-processor for the structural analysis. It is not suitable for those complicated structures that are irregular in their shape, and the conflict parts of structural components cannot be easily discovered by manual examinations before construction. In this paper, a new method for the three-dimensional modeling of complicated structures in a virtual reality environment is presented. By employment of this method, users can specify beams, columns and other components in a three-dimensional space as if they are being constructed in the real world. Joints of components will be visible to users, and the clashed parts of components can be located in the virtual world. The solutions on modeling of complicated structures in a virtual reality environment are illustrated. Principles of computer-aided intersection testing of structural components in a virtual reality environment are also presented.

Abstract:The application of virtual reality systems to the civil and building engineering shows that a great deal of work load is the modeling of a building, or buildings in an urban area. To provide a modeling system which enables the users. to construct models of irregular and complicated structures efficiently, and to share the models via network for the design and construction management, a modeling system of application independent, which enables quick modeling of irregular and complicated building structures adapted to VR applications based on Web was developed. The 3D building model can be transferred to the model which can be viewed in different virtual reality environments via a special interface for the data conversion. In the constructing of 3D models of urban objects for urban applications, the digital maps of urban area were used to reduce the work loads.

Abstract:Abstract Virtual reality is a kind of computer simulation system which can create virtual environment. People can interact with the three-dimensional environment generated by computer. In this paper, the real-time computer graphics technology, three-dimensional modeling technology and binocular stereo vision technology in virtual reality technology are studied, and the binocular stereo vision optical system is designed. This paper studies the visual communication modeling design of 3D scene under the framework of virtual reality graphics rendering. In this paper, we design and make a three-dimensional model, and develop a virtual indoor scene application. In this paper, the 3D model is used to build the scene, and several commonly used rendering technologies such as texture mapping, material, lighting calculation, transparent effect and shadow calculation in unity engine are used to render the scene. The experimental results show that this method can improve the design efficiency and the accuracy of design matching.

Abstract:To set up integrated virtual prototype model more rapidly,a component-based collaborative assembly method was presented.In this method a component-based representation of virtual prototype was established using the port-based modelling method.Based on the representation,a component-based collaborative assembly architecture was constructed.In this architecture the assembly process was divided into three basic steps: grasp and drag of connection element,pre-processing of assembly and component assembly.This method has simplified assembly process and improved the efficiency of assembly modelling.Finally the solution space of collaborative assembly was analyzed.

Abstract:The recent years of the 21th Century are associated with the advent of virtual reality technologies for modern industry and manufacturing engineering. Virtual Machine Tool Technology is given to design, test, control and machine parts in a virtual reality environment. This paper presents the methods to model and simulate the virtual machine tools in response to change in the machining requirements. Specifically, a set of module combination rules and a modeling method of the structure of machine tools using connectivity graph are developed. By this way virtual machine tool is implemented. The developed virtual machine tool can be efficiently used for industry training and machine leaning and operating.

Abstract:Technology of Virtual Random Walk in building environment is one of the important contents of Virtual Reality Technology, which has a broad prospect for application in the fields of architecture, tourism, military and computer game design. This paper introduces the principle of Virtual Reality Modeling Language VRML, analyzes its operating principle and basic characteristics. Then it introduces some related technologies of the ancient cultural sites of the virtual roaming system. It introduces in detail three-dimensional modeling steps and methods including geometric modeling, physical modeling and Behavioral Modeling. Then, it give a detailed analysis of the key technology and the program realization of the ancient architecture of the virtual roaming system with the construction of Miaofeng Mountain as the background. Finally, it introduces the web-browse module and the optimization mode of the scene.

Abstract:Virtual assembly and tolerance analysis are effective tools to avoid assembly conflicts between components designed by different CAD teams during collaborative product design. This paper develops a virtual assembly and tolerance analysis system supporting collaborative product design and puts forward a component model expression method based on assembly ports as well as giving approaches to interactive assembly and tolerance analysis in virtual environment, which include recognition of assembly relation based on assembly ports, partial disassembly in assembly procedure, assembly movement navigation, recording of assembly procedure and tolerance information visualization. Besides, the paper also realizes the reusing of virtual assembly procedure to support modification and refinement of components' structure in collaborative product design.

Abstract:Modeling is a key activity in conceptual design and system design. Through collaborative modeling, end-users, stakeholders, experts, and entrepreneurs are able to create a shared understanding of a system representation. While the Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one of the major conceptual modeling languages in object-oriented software engineering, more and more concerns arise from the modeling quality of UML and its tool support. Among them, the limitation of the two-dimensional presentation of its notations and lack of natural collaborative modeling tools are reported to be significant. In this paper, we explore the potential of using Virtual Reality (VR) technology for collaborative UML software design by comparing it with classical collaborative software design using conventional devices (Desktop PC, Laptop). For this purpose, we have developed a VR modeling environment that offers a natural collaborative modeling experience for UML Class Diagrams. Based on a user study with 24 participants, we have compared collaborative VR modeling with conventional modeling with regard to efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction. Results show that the use of VR has some disadvantages concerning efficiency and effectiveness, but the user's fun, the feeling of being in the same room with a remote collaborator, and the naturalness of collaboration were increased.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) is being applied to a wide range of medical areas, including medical education/training, surgery and diagnostics assistance. In the medical education field, VR opens new realms in the teaching of medicine and creates new effective learning procedures for the students. In contrast with the expensive immersive virtual reality learning environment (VRLE) such as CAVE, ImmersaDesk, virtual reality modeling language (VRML) technology provides a cheap and simple way to create such an environment and can be easily deployed in the classroom. In this paper, we describe some traditional application of VR in medical education and design a prototype of VRLE system based on VRML and visualization toolkit (VTK). The system architecture and module design are described in detail and some results are presented.

Abstract:Nowadays, the virtual reality (VR) technology has been widely used in machinery to verify the working process and performance of equipment prototype in early design stage. To gain insight into the coupling of process verifying the timing and rhythm of equipment working and performance indicating the quality of equipment, a VR framework is proposed in this paper to integrate the modeling and simulation of working process with the visualization of multisource analysis data from various computer-aided engineering (CAE) software. The framework is equipped with an extended discrete event system specification (DEVS) method, named scripted DEVS, which divides the process modeling into two stages, namely, behavior modeling and data customization, and frees the mechanical designer from programming. Based on the method, a uniform procedure of data integration is designed to hide the specific structure and visualization implementation of diverse data from the modeler by a script format called PDTree (Process&Data Tree) and a series of visualization interfaces in model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. Three applications of different working processes are also presented finally to verify the flexibility and compatibility of the framework.

Abstract:This paper proposes a semantics knowledge modeling approach for product assembly, which is suitable for virtual reality interaction. Assembly semantics knowledge is used to express design conception, constrain the relationship between parts, and encapsulate design knowledge in semantics knowledge modeling. Using assembly semantics, the designer is able to express design intention in engineer's language, which is natural and convenient for designer. In addition, the intelligence of the system can be promoted through the inference of implicit knowledge of semantics. These methods are implemented in the development of VIRDAS (VIrtual Reality Design and Assembly System) and several assembly examples are also given in this paper.
