Abstract:Synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons above the photosphere of a relativistic ejecta is a natural candidate for the dominant process for the prompt GRB emission. There is however a tension between the predicted low-energy spectral index $\alpha=-3/2$ in the fast cooling regime and observations. Radiating electrons have time to travel away from their acceleration site and may experience an evolving magnetic field. To study the impact on the synchrotron spectrum, we compute the radiation from electrons in a decaying magnetic field, including adiabatic cooling, synchrotron radiation, IC scatterings and pair production. We explore the physical conditions in the comoving frame of the emission region and focus on the fast cooling regime where the radiative timescale of electrons with a Lorentz factor $\Gamma_{m}$ responsible for the peak of the emission, $t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, is much shorter than the dynamical timescale $t_{dyn}$. We find that the effect depends on the decay characteristic timescale $t_{B}$: (i) for a slow decay with $t_{B}\gtrsim 10 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, the effect is very weak and the spectral shape is mostly determined by the impact of the IC scatterings on the electron cooling, leading to $-3/2\le \alpha\le -1$; (ii) for a fast decay with $0.1 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})\lesssim t_{B}\lesssim 10 t_{syn}(\Gamma_{m})$, the magnetic field decay has a strong impact, leading naturally to the synchrotron marginally fast cooling regime, where $\alpha$ tends to $-2/3$ while the radiative efficiency remains high. The high energy IC component is enhanced in this regime ; (iii) for an even faster decay, the whole electron population is slow cooling. We conclude that efficient synchrotron radiation in a rapidly decaying magnetic field can reproduce low-energy photon indices ranging from $\alpha=-3/2$ to $-2/3$, in agreement with the measured value in the majority of GRB spectra.

Abstract:In the internal shock model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the synchrotron spectrum from the fast cooling electrons in a homogeneous downstream magnetic field (MF) is too soft to produce the low-energy slope of GRB spectra. However, the MF may decay downstream with distance from the shock front. Here we show that the synchrotron spectrum becomes harder if electrons undergo synchrotron and inverse-Compton cooling in a decaying MF. To reconcile this with the typical GRB spectrum with low-energy slope nu F-nu proportional to nu, the postshock MF decay time must be comparable to the cooling time of the bulk electrons (corresponding to a MF decaying length typically of similar to 10(5) skin depths); that the inverse-Compton cooling should dominate synchrotron cooling after the MF decay time; and/or that the MF decays with comoving time roughly as B proportional to t(-1.5). An internal shock synchrotron model with a decaying MF can account for the majority of GRBs with low-energy slopes not harder than nu(4/3).

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic electromagnetic sources in the Universe, releasing 1042–1047 J (refs. <a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR2">2</a>) in prompt gamma-ray radiation. Fifty years after their discovery, the physical origin of this emission is still unknown. Synchrotron emission has been an early contender<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR4">4</a>, but was criticized because spectral fits of empirical models suggest too hard a slope of the low-energy power law, violating the so-called synchrotron line-of-death<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR6">6</a>, and for its inefficient extraction of energy when the electrons are not fully cooled, reviving models of photospheric emission<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR9">9</a>. Fitting proper synchrotron spectra<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR10">10</a> (rather than heuristic functions) and taking electron cooling into account was shown to work for several GRB spectra<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR14">14</a>. Here, we show that idealized synchrotron emission, when properly incorporating time-dependent cooling of the electrons, is capable of fitting ~95% of all time-resolved spectra of single-peaked GRBs observed by Fermi's Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Thus, the past exclusion of synchrotron radiation as an emission mechanism derived via the line-of-death was misleading. Our analysis probes the microphysical processes operating within these ultra-relativistic outflows and provides estimates of magnetic field strengths and Lorentz factors of the emitting region directly from spectral fits. The resulting parameter distributions are largely compatible with theoretical spectral<a href="#ref-CR15">15</a>,<a href="#ref-CR16">16</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR17">17</a> and outflow predictions<a href="/articles/s41550-019-0911-z#ref-CR18">18</a>. The emission energetics implied by the observed, uncooled electrons remain challenging for all theoretical models.

On the Magnetization of Gamma-Ray Burst Blast Waves

Abstract:The origin of magnetic fields that permeate the blast waves of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is a long-standing problem. The present paper argues that in four GRBs revealing extended emission at > 100 MeV, with follow-up in the radio, optical and X-ray domains at later times, this magnetization can be described as the partial decay of the micro-turbulence that is generated in the shock precursor. Assuming that the bulk of the extended emission > 100 MeV can be interpreted as synchrotron emission of shock-accelerated electrons, we model the multi-wavelength light curves of GRB 090902B, GRB 090323, GRB 090328 and GRB 110731A, using a simplified then a full synchrotron calculation with power-law-decaying micro-turbulence epsilon(B) t(t)(alpha) (t denotes the time since injection through the shock, in the comoving blast frame). We find that these models point to a consistent value of the decay exponent -0.5 less than or similar to alpha(t) less than or similar to -0.4.
On the Radiation Fields of Fast Radio Bursts Close to Sources

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are coherent powerful radio transients with cosmological origins. The detected galactic FRB reveals that magnetars can generate FRBs, however the mechanism still remains enigmatic. Characteristics of FRBs are limited to observable quantities such as luminosity, duration, spectrum and repetition etc. Due to the uncertainties of triggering mechanisms and source sites within or out of magnetospheres of neutron stars, status of FRBs close to their sources are unknown. As an extreme astronomical event, FRBs could accompany with energy-comparable or even more powerful x/γ-ray counterparts. Here, we study the interaction of ultrastrong radio pulses in GHz and high-energy photons in GeV. Particle-in-cell simulations show that at the field-strength of about 3 × 10V/cm, quantum cascade effects can generate dense pair plasmas and the radio pulses are significantly depleted. Therefore, GHz radio pulses of stronger than 3 × 10V/cm is difficult to escape from emitters if accompanying with GeV photons. This process could afford a limit to the FRB field strength nearby sources. Investigation on the toleration of ∼ 10 V/cm radio waves for potential plasma/beam emitters in neutron-star scenerios should be helpful to distinguish the precise mechanism of FRBs.

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious transient sources. If extragalactic, as suggested by their relative large dispersion measures, their brightness temperatures must be extremely high. Some FRB models (e.g., young pulsar model, magnetar giant flare model, or supra-massive neutron star collapse model) suggest that they may be associated with a synchrotron nebula. Here we study a synchrotron-heating process by an FRB in a self-absorbed synchrotron nebula. If the FRB frequency is below the synchrotron self-absorption frequency of the nebula, electrons in the nebula would absorb FRB photons, leading to a harder electron spectrum and enhanced self-absorbed synchrotron emission. In the meantime, the FRB flux is absorbed by the nebula electrons. We calculate the spectra of FRB-heated synchrotron nebulae, and show that the nebula spectra would show a significant hump in several decades near the self-absorption frequency. Identifying such a spectral feature would reveal an embedded FRB in a synchrotron nebula.

Low-energy Spectra Of Gamma-ray Bursts From Cooling Electrons

Abstract:The low-energy spectra of gamma-ray bursts' (GRBs)prompt emission are closely related to the energy distribution of electrons, which is further regulated by their cooling processes. We develop a numerical code to calculate the evolution of the electron distribution with given initial parameters, in which three cooling processes (i.e., adiabatic, synchrotron, and inverse Compton cooling) and the effect of a decaying magnetic field are coherently considered. A sequence of results is presented by exploring the plausible parameter space for both the fireball and the Poynting flux-dominated regime. Different cooling patterns for the electrons can be identified, and they are featured by a specific dominant cooling mechanism. Our results show that the hardening of the low-energy spectra can be attributed to the dominance of synchrotron self-Compton cooling within the internal shock model or to decaying synchrotron cooling within the Poynting flux-dominated jet scenario. These two mechanisms can be distinguished by observing the hard low-energy spectra of isolated short pulses in some GRBs. The dominance of adiabatic cooling can also lead to hard low-energy spectra when the ejecta is moving at an extreme relativistic speed. The information from the time-resolved low-energy spectra can help to probe the physical characteristics of the GRB ejecta via our numerical results.

Abstract:The brightest Gamma-ray burst, GRB 221009A, has spurred numerous theoretical investigations, with particular attention paid to the origins of ultra-high energy TeV photons during the prompt phase. However, analyzing the mechanism of radiation of photons in the $\sim$MeV range has been difficult because the high flux causes pile-up and saturation effects in most GRB detectors. In this letter, we present systematic modeling of the time-resolved spectra of the GRB using unsaturated data obtained from Fermi/GBM (precursor) and SATech-01/GECAM-C (main emission and flare). Our approach incorporates the synchrotron radiation model, which assumes an expanding emission region with relativistic speed and a global magnetic field that decays with radius, and successfully fits such a model to the observational data. Our results indicate that the spectra of the burst are fully in accordance with a synchrotron origin from relativistic electrons accelerated at a large emission radius. The lack of thermal emission in the prompt emission spectra supports a Poynting-flux-dominated jet composition.

ON THE ORIGIN OF > 10 GeV PHOTONS IN GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS

Abstract:Fermi/LAT has detected long-lasting high-energy photons (>100 MeV) from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with the highest energy photons reaching about 100 GeV. One proposed scenario is that they are produced by high-energy electrons accelerated in GRB forward shocks via synchrotron radiation. We study the maximum synchrotron photon energy in this scenario, considering the properties of the microturbluence magnetic fields behind the shock, as revealed by recent Particle-in-Cell simulations and theoretical analyses of relativistic collisionless shocks. Due to the small-scale nature of the micro-turbulent magnetic field, the Bohm acceleration approximation breaks down at such high energies. This effect leads to a typical maximum synchrotron photon of a few GeV at 100 s after the burst and this maximum synchrotron photon energy decreases quickly with time. We show that the fast decrease of the maximum synchrotron photon energy leads to a fast decay of the synchrotron flux. The 10-100 GeV photons detected after the prompt phase can not be produced by the synchrotron mechanism. They could originate from the synchrotron self-Compton emission of the early afterglow if the circum-burst density is sufficiently large, or from the external inverse-Compton process in the presence of central X-ray emission, such as X-ray flares and prompt high-latitude X-ray emission.
Emission Processes of High Energy Gamma Rays from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in the reverse shocks of gamma-ray bursts is suggested to be responsible for the observed prompt high-energy gamma-ray emissions from several gamma-ray bursts. We find that the SSC emission from the reverse shocks dominates over other emission processes in energy bands from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, for a wide range of shock parameters. This model is favorable for escape of energetic photons from the emitting regions due to a lower internal pair-production optical depth, as the characteristic size of the reverse shock region is much larger than that of internal shocks. We predict that, in this model, the prompt high-energy emissions are correlated with the prompt optical flashes, which can be test in the forthcoming GLAST era.

Synchrotron self-Compton in a radiative-adiabatic fireball scenario: Modelling the multiwavelength observations in some Fermi/LAT bursts

Abstract:Energetic GeV photons expected from the closest and the most energetic Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide an unique opportunity to study the very-high-energy emission as well as the possible correlations with lower energy bands in realistic GRB afterglow models. In the standard GRB afterglow model, the relativistic homogeneous shock is usually considered to be fully adiabatic, however, it could be partially radiative. Based on the external forward-shock scenario in both stellar wind and constant-density medium. We present a radiative-adiabatic analytical model of the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and synchrotron processes considering an electron energy distribution with a power-law index of 1 < p < 2 and 2 $\leq$ p. We show that the SSC scenario plays a relevant role in the radiative parameter $\epsilon$, leading to a prolonged evolution during the slow cooling regime. In a particular case, we derive the Fermi/LAT light curves together with the photons with energies $\geq$ 100 MeV in a sample of nine bursts from the second Fermi/LAT GRB catalog that exhibited temporal and spectral indices with $\geq$ 1.5 and $\approx$ 2, respectively. These events can hardly be described with closure relations of the standard synchrotron afterglow model, and also exhibit energetic photons above the synchrotron limit. We have modeled the multi-wavelength observations of our sample to constrain the microphysical parameters, the circumburst density, the bulk Lorentz factor and the mechanism responsible for explaining the energetic GeV photons.

Steep Decay of Grb X-Ray Flares: the Results of Anisotropic Synchrotron Radiation

Abstract:When an emitting spherical shell with a constant Lorentz factor turns off emission abruptly at some radii, its high-latitude emission would obey the relation of (alpha) over cap (the temporal index) = 2 + (beta) over cap (the spectral index). However, this relation is violated by the X-ray fares in some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), whose (alpha) over cap is much more steeper. We show that the synchrotron radiation should be anisotropic when the angular distribution of accelerated electrons has a preferable orientation, and this anisotropy would naturally lead to a steeper decay for the high-latitude emission if the intrinsic emission is limb-brightened. We use this simple toy model to reproduce the temporal and spectral evolution of X-ray flares. We show that our model can well interpret the steep decay of the X-ray flares in the three GRBs selected as an example. Recent simulations on particle acceleration may support the specific anisotropic distribution of the electrons adopted in our work. Reversely, confirmation of the anisotropy in the radiation would provide meaningful clues to the details of electron acceleration in the emitting region.
The Termination Shock of a Magnetar Wind: a Possible Origin of Gamma-Ray Burst X-ray Afterglow Emission

Abstract:Context: Swift observations suggest that the X-ray afterglow emission of some gamma-ray bursts (GRB) may have internal origins, and the conventional external shock (ES) cannot be the exclusive source of the afterglow emission. Aims: If the central compact objects of some GRBs are millisecond magentars, the magnetar winds could play an important role in the (internal) X-ray afterglow emission, which is our focus here. Methods: The dynamics and the synchrotron radiation of the termination shock (TS) of the magmnetar winds, as well as the simultaneous GRB ES, are investigated by considering the magnetization of the winds. Results: As a result of the competition between the emission of the wind TS and the GRB ES, two basic types of X-ray afterglows are predicted, i.e., the TS-dominated and the ES-dominated types. Moreover, our results also show that both of the two types of afterglows have a shallow-decay phase and a normal-decay one, as observed by the \textit{Swift} satellite. This indicates that some observed X-ray afterglows could be (internally) produced by the magnetar winds, but not necessarily GRB ESs.
Very-high-energy Emission and Cascade Radiation of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows: Homogeneous Versus Wind External Media

Abstract:Recent detection of sub-TeV emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) represents a breakthrough in the GRB study. The multiwavelength data of the afterglows of GRB 190114C support the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) origin for its sub-TeV emission. We present a comparative analysis on the SSC emission of GRB afterglows in the homogeneous and wind environments in the framework of the forward shock model. The gamma gamma absorption of very-high-energy photons due to pair production within the source and the Klein-Nishina effect on the inverse Compton scattering are considered. Generally a higher SSC flux is expected for a larger circum-burst density due to a larger Compton parameter, but meanwhile the internal gamma gamma absorption is more severe for sub-TeV emission. The flux ratio between the SSC component and the synchrotron component decreases more quickly with time in the wind medium case than in the homogeneous density medium case. The light curves of the SSC emission are also different for the two types of media. We also calculate the cascade emission resulting from the absorbed high-energy photons. In the ISM environment with n greater than or similar to 1 cm(-3), the cascade synchrotron emission could be comparable to the synchrotron emission of the primary electrons in the optical band, which may flatten the optical afterglow light curve at an early time (t < 1 hr). In the wind medium with A(*) greater than or similar to 0.1, the cascade emission in the eV-GeV band is comparable or even larger than the emission of the primary electrons at the early time.
Adiabatic non-resonant acceleration in magnetic turbulence and hard spectra of gamma-ray bursts

Abstract:We introduce a non-resonant acceleration mechanism arising from the second adiabatic invariant in magnetic turbulence and apply it to study the prompt emission spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The mechanism contains both the first-and second-order Fermi acceleration, originating from the interacting turbulent reconnection and dynamo processes. It leads to a hard electron energy distribution up to a cutoff energy at the balance between the acceleration and synchrotron cooling. The sufficient acceleration rate ensures a rapid hardening of any initial energy distribution to a power-law distribution with the index p similar to 1, which naturally produces a low-energy photon index alpha similar to -1 via the synchrotron radiation. For typical GRB parameters, the synchrotron emission can extend to a characteristic photon energy on the order of similar to 100 keV.
Energy of Magnetic Vortices in Rotating Superconductor

Abstract:We carry out a systematic analytic investigation of stationary and cylindrically symmetric vortex configurations for simple models representing an incompressible non-relativistic superconductor in a rigidly rotating background. It is shown that although the magnetic and kinetic contributions to the energy per unit length of such a vortex are separately modified by the background angular velocity, its effect on the total energy per unit length cancels out. For a type II superconductor threaded by a parallel array of such vortices, this result implies that the relevant macroscopic magnetic field strength H will not be equal to the large scale average of the local magnetic induction B (as has previously been suggested) but instead that H will simply be equal to the external London field that characterizes the value of B outside the vortices.

Klein-Nishina Effects on the High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Prompt and long-lived high-energy (> 100 MeV) gamma-ray emission has been detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) recently from more than ten gamma-ray bursts. It has been suggested that such emission is produced by synchrotron radiation of electrons accelerated in internal and external shocks. Here we show that, during both the prompt and early afterglow phase, inverse-Compton (IC) scattering of these electrons with synchrotron photons are typically in the Klein-Nishina (KN) regime. For the prompt emission, the KN effect may strongly suppress the IC component, which is consistent with one single spectral component seen in some strong bursts, such as in GRB080916C and GRB090217. The KN inverse-Compton cooling may also affect the low-energy electron number distribution and hence results in a low-energy synchrotron photon spectrum harder than the standard fast-cooling spectrum n(V) proportional to V-3/2. During the early afterglow, KN effect leads to a low Compton-Y parameter, which is generally less than a few in the first tens of seconds for a wide range of parameter space. Furthermore, we suggest that the KN effect can explain the somewhat faster than expected decay of the early-time high-energy emission observed in some GRBs.

Abstract:We argue that the dominant radiation mechanism responsible for the early prompt γ-ray emission of gamma-ray bursts could be the resonant inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons in an intense magnetic field. By using this mechanism, some problems in the field of gamma-ray bursts could be clarified, e.g., the origin of the Amati relation, the formation of the observed broken power-law spectra, and the related deadline problem, among others. Our model also predicts that the emitted γ-rays could be highly polarized.

Abstract:Context. We study the time-resolved spectral properties of energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with good high-energy photon statistics observed by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor ((IBM) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope.Aims. We aim to constrain in detail the spectral properties of GRB prompt emission on a time-resolved basis and to discuss the theoretical implications of the fitting results in the context of various prompt emission models.Methods. Our sample comprises eight GRBs observed by the Fermi (IBM in its first five years of mission, with 1 keV-1 MeV fluence f > 1.0 x 10(-4) erg cm(-2) and a signal-to-noise ratio level of S/N >= 10.0 above 900 keV. We performed a time-resolved spectral analysis using a variable temporal binning technique according to optimal S/N criteria, resulting in a total of 299 time-resolved spectra. We performed Band function fits to all spectra and obtained the distributions for the low-energy power-lay index alpha, the high-energy power-law index beta, the peak energy in the observed nu F-nu, spectrum E-p, and the difference between the low- and high-energy power-law indices Delta s = alpha-beta. We also applied a physically motivated synchrotron model, which is a triple power-law with constrained power-law indices and a blackbody component, to test the prompt emission for consistency with a synchrotron origin and obtain the distributions for the two break energies E-b,E-1 and E-b,E-2 the middle segment power-law index beta, and the Planck function temperature kT.Results. The Band function parameter distributions are alpha = -0.73(-0.21)(+0.16), beta = -2.13(-0.56)(+0.28), E-p = 374.47(-187.7)(+307.3) keV (log(10) E-p = 2.577(-0.30)(+0.26)), and Delta s = 1.38(-0.31)(+0.54), with average errors sigma(alpha) similar to 0.1, sigma(beta) similar to 0.2, and sigma(Ep) similar to 0.1E(p). Using the distributions of Delta s and beta, the electron population index p is found to be consistent with the "moderately fast" scenario, in which fast- and slow-cooling scenarios cannot be distinguished. The physically motivated synchrotron-fitting function parameter distributions are E-b,E-1 = 129.6(-32.4)(+132.2) keV, E-b,E-2 = 631.4(-309.6)(+582) keV, beta = 1.721(-0.25)(+0.48), and kT = 10.4(-3.7)(+4.9) keV, with average errors sigma(beta) similar to 0.2, sigma E-b,E-1 similar to 0.1E(b,1), sigma E-b,E-2 similar to 0.4E(b,2,) and sigma(kT) similar to 0.1kT. This synchrotron function requires the synchrotron injection and cooling break (i.e., E-min and E-cool) to be close to each other within a factor of ten, often in addition to a Planck function.Conclusions. A synchrotron model is found that is consistent with most of the time-resolved spectra for eight energetic Fermi (IBM bursts with good high-energy photon statistics as long as both the cooling and injection break are included and the leftmost spectral slope is lifted either by including a thermal component or when an evolving magnetic field is accounted for.
Observational Signatures of High‐Energy Emission During the Shallow Decay Phase of Gamma‐Ray Burst X‐Ray Afterglows

Abstract:The widely existing shallow decay phase of the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is generally accepted to be due to long-lasting energy injection. The outflows carrying the injecting energy, based on the component that is dominant in energy, fall into two possible types: baryon-dominated and lepton-dominated ones. The former type of outflow could be ejecta that is ejected during the prompt phase of a GRB and consists of a series of baryonic shells with a distribution of Lorentz factors, and the latter type could be an electron-positron pair wind that is driven by the postburst central engine. We here provide a unified description for the dynamics of fireballs based on these two types of energy injection and calculate the corresponding high-energy photon emission by considering synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering (including synchrotron self-Compton and combined inverse Compton) of electrons. We find that, in the two energy-injection models, there is a plateau (even a hump) in high-energy light curves during the X-ray shallow decay phase. In particular, a considerable fraction of the injecting energy in the lepton-dominated model can be shared by the long-lasting reverse shock since it is relativistic. Furthermore, almost all of the energy of the reverse shock is carried by leptons, and thus, the inverse Compton emission is enhanced dramatically. Therefore, this model predicts more significant high-energy afterglow emission than the baryon-dominated model. We argue that these observational signatures would be used to discriminate between different energy-injection models in the upcoming Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) era.
