Global warming has greatly threatened the human living environment and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is recognized as a promising way to reduce carbon emissions. Mineral storage is considered a reliable option for long-term carbon storage. Basalt rich in alkaline earth elements facilitates rapid and permanent CO 2 fixation as carbonates. However, the complex CO 2 -fluid-basalt interaction poses challenges for assessing carbon storage potential. Under different reaction conditions, the carbonation products and carbonation rates vary. Carbon mineralization reactions also induce petrophysical and mechanical responses, which have potential risks for the long-term injectivity and the carbon storage safety in basalt reservoirs. In this paper, recent advances in carbon mineralization storage in basalt based on laboratory research are comprehensively reviewed. The assessment methods for carbon storage potential are introduced and the carbon trapping mechanisms are investigated with the identification of the controlling factors. Changes in pore structure, permeability and mechanical properties in both static reaction and reactive percolation experiments are also discussed. This study provides insight into challenges as well as perspectives for future research.

Abstract:Carbon-negative strategies such as geologic carbon sequestration in continental flood basalts offers a promising route to the removal of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, via safe and permanent storage as stable carbonates. This potential has been successfully demonstrated at a field scale at the Wallula Basalt Carbon Storage Pilot Project where supercritical CO2 was injected into the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG). Here, we analyze recovered post-injection sidewall core cross-sections containing carbonate nodules using μ-XRF chemical mapping techniques that revealed compositional zonation within the nodules. The unique nature of the subsurface anthropogenic carbonates is highlighted by the near absence of Mg in an ankerite-like composition. Furthermore, a comparison between pre- and post-injection sidewall cores along with an in-depth chemical mapping of basalt pore lining cements provides a better understanding into the source and fate of critical cationic species involved in the precipitation of carbon mineralization products. Collectively, these results provide crucial insights into carbonate growth mechanisms under a time-dependent pore fluid composition. As such, these findings will enable parameterization of predictive models for future CO2 sequestration efforts in reactive reservoirs around the world.

Abstract:Inject, baby, inject! Atmospheric CO 2 can be sequestered by injecting it into basaltic rocks, providing a potentially valuable way to undo some of the damage done by fossil fuel burning. Matter et al. injected CO 2 into wells in Iceland that pass through basaltic lavas and hyaloclastites at depths between 400 and 800 m. Most of the injected CO 2 was mineralized in less than 2 years. Abstract:Basaltic rocks, owing to their vast geological presence, have been identified as potential reservoirs for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestration. Their inherent attributes, namely, a pronounced mineral trapping capability, distinct structural intricacies, and a potential storage capacity surpassing 100Gt, earmark them as prime candidates for CO 2 storage. However, knowledge gaps exist in understanding the modifications in the petrophysical and mechanical characteristics of these rocks post-CO 2 sequestration. Comprehending these CO 2 -induced petrophysico-mechanical alterations is crucial for assessing their potential for long-term carbon mineralization-based storage. Thus, this study provides a critical review of key parameters that can induce post-CO 2 injection changes in the mechanical and petrophysical properties of basaltic rocks. Also, the implications of these changes for long-term CO 2 storage efficiency in Basaltic rocks are succinctly presented. Findings from this review work show that the mineralogical composition of basaltic rocks can alter the petrophysical and mechanical behaviors during CO 2 injection. The reaction processes tend to enhance CO 2 storage and mineralization via an increase in the porosity of the basaltic tuff, which was caused mainly by their dissolution. Laboratory simulations of CO 2 storage in basaltic rocks had revealed that when the experiment was run for a longer length of time, the distribution/concentration of reaction minerals, reaction rates of the minerals, and/or permeability development of the rock matrix either decreased, increased, or remained the same. Furthermore, the strength indices for all types of basalts demonstrate that as exposure duration increases, the material strength steadily decreases. Core experiments and laboratory simulations have revealed that permeability increased at a higher flow rate and decreased at a lower flow rate. This is because a higher flow rate (increased injection pressure) will yield more pore spaces. Also, precipitation of carbonate minerals is favored under alkaline conditions since this condition necessitates increased production of divalent cations. Understanding these changes is essential since they can be detrimental to the immediate environment of the storage site, especially when there is CO 2 leakage and consequent contact with freshwater resources. Similarly, we highlighted how several reports have correlated the occurrence of low-scale seismic events bounding the storage sites, to CO 2 storage. Lastly, based on the reviews synthesized, we recommend promising directions to provide more profound insights into CO 2 storage in basaltic rocks.

Exotic Carbonate Mineralization Recovered from a Deep Basalt Carbon Storage Demonstration

Abstract:Mitigating climate change requires transformational advances for carbon dioxide removal, including geologic carbon sequestration in reactive subsurface environments. The Wallula Basalt Carbon Storage Pilot Project demonstrated that CO2 injected into >800 m deep Columbia River Basalt Group flow top reservoirs mineralizes on month-year timescales. Herein, we present new optical petrography, micro-computed X-ray tomography, and electron microscopy results obtained from sidewall cores collected two years after CO2 injection. As no other anthropogenic carbonates from geologic carbon storage field studies have been recovered, this world-unique sample suite provides unparalleled insight for subsurface carbon mineralization products and paragenesis. Chemically zoned nodules with Ca/Mn-rich cores and Fe-dominant outer rims are prominent examples of the neoformed carbonate assemblages with ankerite-siderite compositions and exotic divalent cation correlations. Paragenetic insights for the timing of aragonite, silica, and fibrous zeolites are clarified based on mineral texture and spatial relationships, along with time-resolved downhole fluid sampling. Collectively, these results clarify the mineralogy, chemistry, and paragenesis of carbon mineralization, providing insight into the ultimate fate and transport of CO2 in reactive mafic-ultramafic reservoirs.

Abstract:Negative emission technologies underpin socioeconomic scenarios consistent with the Paris Agreement. Afforestation and bioenergy coupled with carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage are the main land negative emission technologies proposed, but the range of nature-based solutions is wider. Here we explore soil amendment with powdered basalt in natural ecosystems. Basalt is an abundant rock resource, which reacts with CO2 and removes it from the atmosphere. Besides, basalt improves soil fertility and thereby potentially enhances ecosystem carbon storage, rendering a global CO2 removal of basalt substantially larger than previously suggested. As this is a fully developed technology that can be co-deployed in existing land systems, it is suited for rapid upscaling. Achieving sufficiently high net CO2 removal will require upscaling of basalt mining, deploying systems in remote areas with a low carbon footprint and using energy from low-carbon sources. We argue that basalt soil amendment should be considered a prominent option when assessing land management options for mitigating climate change, but yet unknown side-effects, as well as limited data on field-scale deployment, need to be addressed first. The enhanced CO2 uptake by vegetation in response to powdered rock should be considered in assessing the feasibility of enhanced weathering as a negative emission technology in mitigating climate change, suggest simulations of a land surface model.

Abstract:Mineral carbon storage in mafic and ultramafic rock masses has the potential to be an effective and permanent mechanism to reduce anthropogenic CO2. Several successful pilot‐scale projects have been carried out in basaltic rock (e.g., CarbFix, Wallula), demonstrating the potential for rapid CO2 sequestration. However, these tests have been limited to the injection of small quantities of CO2. Thus, the longevity and feasibility of long‐term, large‐scale mineralization operations to store the levels of CO2 needed to address the present climate crisis is unknown. Moreover, CO2 mineralization in ultramafic rocks, which tend to be more reactive but less permeable, has not yet been quantified. In these systems, fractures are expected to play a crucial role in the flow and reaction of CO2 within the rock mass and will influence the CO2 storage potential of the system. Therefore, consideration of fractures is imperative to the prediction of CO2 mineralization at a specific storage site. In this review, we highlight key takeaways, successes, and shortcomings of CO2 mineralization pilot tests that have been completed and are currently underway. Laboratory experiments, directed toward understanding the complex geochemical and geomechanical reactions that occur during CO2 mineralization in fractures, are also discussed. Experimental studies and their applicability to field sites are limited in time and scale. Many modeling techniques can be applied to bridge these limitations. We highlight current modeling advances and their potential applications for predicting CO2 mineralization in mafic and ultramafic rocks.

Abstract:Basalt rich in Ca, Mg and Fe enables fast CO2 mineralization, making carbon storage in basalt an alternative technology for reducing carbon emissions. The Leizhou Peninsula in China holds great potential as a key region for basalt carbon storage. However, the scarcity of extensive research on basalt carbonation reactions and the resulting mechanical response poses a significant obstacle to the implementation of this technology. Therefore, a series of basalt carbonation experiments were carried out. The results showed that diopside had the highest dissolution rate and acted as the primary source of divalent cations. Within one month, smectite was formed, followed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals. Initially, aragonite and dolomite were the primary carbonation products, but over time, dolomite dominated with a higher percentage of Mg. The dissolution and precipitation of minerals also led to degradation of the micromechanical properties of the basalt. With the progress of the reaction, the average elastic modulus and hardness continuously decreased with maximum reduction rates of 87.66 and 84.38%, respectively. The dissolution-dominant reaction caused an increase in defects on the surface of the basalt sample. Furthermore, the newly formed carbonate and clay minerals exhibited weaker mechanical strength, exacerbating the overall mechanical performance. This mechanical weakness poses a long-term safety risk for carbon storage. This study can provide valuable insights for the implementation of CO2 mineralization in the Leizhou Peninsula, Guangdong Province, China.

Abstract:Ensuring sustainable energy development and reducing CO2 emissions are two major challenges that need to be overcome to deal with the global economic crisis and to alleviate climate change. Hot dry rock is a renewable energy resource with a huge potential. CO2-based enhanced geothermal systems (CO2-EGS) can achieve both heat extraction and CO2 storage in hot dry rock. To investigate the storage rate, a heat extraction experiment involving the alternating cyclic injection of water and supercritical CO2 was conducted. The ion contents of the fracture solution of the different injection cycles were measured, and the amount of CO2 mineralization storage was calculated. In addition, changes in the mineral composition of the fracture surface were observed and analysed. The results revealed that the mineral dissolution on the fracture surface was mainly feldspars, which possibly accompanied biotite dissolution. The precipitated minerals that stored the carbon were mainly calcite and dolomite, and possibly illite and cancrinite. Many blocky carbonate minerals were distributed on the flat surface of the fracture, while many rod-shaped carbonates were distributed in the concave holes of the microfractures. The research results reveal the CO2 storage mechanism and are significant for the CO2 storage prediction in the CO2-EGS.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS/CCS) is a strategic choice for ensuring energy security and reducing carbon dioxide emissions across the globe. The injection of CO2 into the basaltic reservoir is one strategy for the permanent disposal of carbon emissions. Basaltic rocks, which are widely distributed in Hainan Island, are capable of CO2 geological sequestration. In this study, the reaction of CO2-NaOH/Ca(OH)2-basaltic rocks under conditions of 6.0 M Pa and 30 °C was performed using basaltic samples collected from the Fushan area of the Hainan Province to evaluate the sequestration of CO2 in basalt by mineralization. Then, the effect of CO2 mineralization on the permeability and mechanical properties of basaltic rocks was evaluated using X-ray computer tomography and triaxial compression testing at 21.0 MPa. In addition, microwave technology was used to irradiate the basaltic rocks before mineralization. Changes in the permeability of basalt before and after mineralization and microwave irradiation were simulated numerically, and their effects on the mechanical strength deterioration of basalt were analyzed according to the rock mechanics using triaxial testing. Based on these results, a new method for the induction of basalt deterioration, mineralization, CO2 injectivity, and storage capacity using microwave irradiation is proposed for use in CCUS/CCS engineering.

Abstract:Against the background of realizing the goal of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”, using basaltic rocks for carbon mineralization is one of the most promising approaches to reduce the rise in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. This study conducted a series of experiments to assess carbon mineralization in nine basalt samples from the main terrestrial basalt reservoirs in China within CO2-H2O/brine-rock systems at low temperatures (≤35 °C). The results indicate that the secondary carbonates formed in the CO2-H2O/brine-basalt system are predominantly calcite rather than Mg-carbonate minerals at low temperatures (≤35 °C). Hence, at low temperatures (≤35 °C), basalt rich in Ca-bearing minerals promotes the formation of stable carbonate minerals more effectively than basalt containing Mg-bearing minerals. Furthermore, under conditions of low temperatures (≤35 °C) and pressures of approximately 3 MPa, the results suggest that alkaline olivine basalt, with a higher content of Ca-minerals and typical alkaline minerals (nepheline and Na-sanidine), exhibits the highest pH value and the highest amount of calcite. Hence, the alkaline minerals, nepheline and Na-sanidine, serve as pH buffers to increase the pH and promote the precipitation of calcite within CO2-H2O– basalt systems at low temperatures (≤35 °C). Among the nine evaluated basalts, basalt from the Shandong Linqu-Changle volcanic basin exhibits the highest rate of carbon mineralization at low temperatures (≤35 °C). Hence, Cenozoic alkaline olivine basalt from Shandong Linqu-Changle volcanic basin is one of the most promising basalt reservoirs in China for future in- situ carbonation. As for ex- situ carbonation, compared with olivine, diopside or Ca-plagioclase may be more appropriate for increasing ocean negative emissions.

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has a fundamental role in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit anthropogenic warming to 1.5–2 °C. Most ongoing CCS projects inject CO2 into sedimentary basins and require an impermeable cap rock to prevent the CO2 from migrating to the surface. Alternatively, captured carbon can be stored through injection into reactive rocks (such as mafic or ultramafic lithologies), provoking CO2 mineralization and, thereby, permanently fixing carbon with negligible risk of return to the atmosphere. Although in situ mineralization offers a large potential volume for carbon storage in formations such as basalts and peridotites (both onshore and offshore), its large-scale implementation remains little explored beyond laboratory-based and field-based experiments. In this Review, we discuss the potential of mineral carbonation to address the global CCS challenge and contribute to long-term reductions in atmospheric CO2. Emphasis is placed on the advances in making this technology more cost-effective and in exploring the limits and global applicability of CO2 mineralization. Carbon capture and storage has a fundamental role in limiting anthropogenic warming to 1.5–2 °C. This Review discusses the basis, potential and limitations of in situ mineral carbonation as a carbon capture and storage strategy.

Intricacies of CO2-Basalt Interactions, Reactive Flow and Carbon Mineralization: Bridging Numerical Forecasts to Empirical Realities

Abstract:Subsurface fluid flow and solute transport are pivotal in addressing pressing energy, environmental, and societal challenges, such as geological CO2 storage. Basaltic rocks have gained prominence as suitable geological substrates for injecting substantial CO2 volumes and carbon mineralization, driven by their widespread occurrence, high concentrations of cation-rich silicate minerals, reported fast mineralization rate, and favorable characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and injectivity. The mineralization process within basaltic rocks is intricately linked, involving the dissolution of silicate minerals and the subsequent precipitation of carbonate minerals. Columnar flow and batch surface growth experiments revealed the spontaneous formation of a limited number of large crystals at various locations, rationalized by the overarching influence of probabilistic mineral nucleation. Experiments with CO2-acidified brine versus freshwater prove to be more challenging regarding the sweet spots for heavy carbon mineralization due to clay formation on the surface, particularly smectites. Despite numerical predictions suggesting the formation of MgFeCa-carbonates in CO2-basalt interactions at higher temperatures, our laboratory findings primarily indicated the growth of calcium carbonates. The experimental and numerical outcomes highlight the necessity of a probabilistic approach for accurately modeling reaction kinetics, crystal growth distribution, and the dynamic interplay between reactive flow, geochemical reactions, mineral carbonation, and geometry alteration.

Abstract:Basalt formations are potentially attractive targets for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) on the basis of favorable CO2-water-rock reactions, which result in permanent CO2 isolation through mineral trapping. Recent pilot-scale experiments in Iceland and Washington state, USA, provide promising results that indicate rapid carbon mineralization occurs within basalt reservoirs. Nevertheless, transitioning these pilot-scale results to large-scale industrial CCS operations is fraught with uncertainty because fluid flow in basalt formations is governed by fracture-controlled hydraulic properties that are highly heterogeneous and difficult to map in situ. This uncertainty is exacerbated by feedbacks between multi-phase fluid dynamics (CO2 and water) and fluid-rock reactions, which may result in a reinforcing feedback comprising CO2 mineralization, permeability alteration, and fluid mobility. To begin to understand the feedbacks between multi-phase fluid flow and mineralization in fractured basalt, this study uses reactive transport simulation methods to model CO2 infiltrating a meter-scale, synthetic basalt fracture overlying a storage reservoir while accounting for porosity change due to mineralization and its corresponding effect on permeability and fluid mobility. Results show that (i) carbonate and clay mineralization tends to occur downgradient of a fracture intersection, (ii) mineralization reduces porosity, which leads to permeability reduction and slows free-phase CO2 migration, (iii) stronger porosity-permeability coupling increases the proportion of mineralized carbon while reducing CO2 mass that can enter fracture, which may lead to self-sealing behavior as fluid mobility approaches nil, and (iv) errors caused by unknown porosity-permeability relationships are small in comparison to errors that arise by omitting mineralization-induced permeability reduction when simulating CO2 sequestration scenarios in basalt reservoirs.

Abstract:This work presents a detailed supercritical CO 2 storage resource estimation for the stacked basalt reservoirs in the Grande Ronde Basalt of the Columbia River Basalt Group in eastern Washington and Oregon. The assessment aims to derisk the commercialization potential of geologic carbon storage in basalt by leveraging both structural and mineralization trapping of CO 2 in basalt. The structural closures formed by anticlinal ridges and synclinal valleys in Yakima Fold Belt are excellent physical traps to accommodate injected supercritical CO 2 . Rigorous hydraulic testing, well logs and simulation results from the Wallula Basalt Pilot #1 well showed the occurrence of 17 suitable permeable injection zones (up to 2,496 mD) intercalated with dense seals (∼2.6E-10 mD) in the Grand Ronde Basalt. In addition, geochemical studies showed fast reactions between supercritical CO 2 and dissolved basalt minerals to form stable carbonates. Our calculation indicates up to 40 gigatons (P90) of mineralization storage resources exist in the Grande Ronde Basalt reservoirs.

Abstract:Basalt is a suitable target area for CO2 storage. Clarifying the evolution of the pore structure during CO2-fluid-basalt interactions is a crucial element in the preparation of a CO2 geologic storage operation. In this study, a pore-scale phase field model is proposed to simulate the CO2-fluid-basalt interaction process of Snake River Plain basalt. Our model is suitable for complex multimineral natural rocks, and the initial mineral distribution before the reaction can be completely based on a real 3D rock image without the need to simplify the mineral geometry. The simulation results demonstrate that after 120 days of dissolution-precipitation reaction, the volume of secondary minerals (3.75%) exceeds that of dissolved minerals (2.01%), leading to a reduction in porosity by 1.74%. The pore structure of the basalt changes significantly, and the connectivity is obviously reduced. The effects of temperature and pressure on the reaction rate were examined to guide site selection for CO2 sequestration. The results show that increasing temperature and pressure can accelerate the reaction rate, but the impact of pressure on the reaction rate is negligible compared to the significant influence of temperature. Therefore, an area with a high geothermal gradient is conducive to geological sequestration.

Abstract:Abstract The rise in global warming is due to the high emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) around the world. Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas emissions, a by-product from the petroleum industry, is contributors to climate change. One technology that may help curb CO2 gas emissions is injecting the gas into the subsurface reservoir. In this study, CO2 mineral trapping behaviour and its reactions within a wet basaltic rock containing Olivine mineral are captured and simulated in a full field numerical simulation model. A 2-stage approach was planned to develop the full field numerical model. In the first stage, a single cell model was developed, assessed and matched to the literature experiments with several assumptions considered and applied. Following this, the second stage involved developing a full field model to observe and analyse the distribution and concentration of CO2 during injection, as well as its sequestration as a solid phase (i.e., mineral trapping). The overall volume ratio of injected CO2 versus water was also assessed to ensure enough CO2 were injected into the basalt rock ensuring clear distribution of CO2 in the rock either in dissolved, trapped, or mobile state. In this study, the injected volume covered 4% of the total water volume. Results show that mineralization occurs faster than expected when CO2 gas was introduced to the wet basaltic rock especially near the CO2 injector wellbore. The mineralization speed depends on the reaction rate, modelling (cell) surface area and volume as well as the reaction rate coefficient where it was tuned to match the experimental results. The time required for the CO2 component to travel within the rock was also assessed to give a clear picture of the CO2 distribution where it took 10 years to reach 1000 ft away from the injector wellbore within a 440 ft thick reservoir.

Abstract:Geological sequestration is an effective way to enhance the net reduction of global CO2 emission.In nature,there is vast amount of carbonation of mafic-ultramafic rocks,reacting with CO2 to produce stable carbonate minerals.Factors that affect carbonation reaction rates of mafic-ultramafic rocks with CO2 include temperature,pressure,pH values,fluid flow rate,and contact surface area,etc..Exothermic mineral reactions can drive the carbonation system into a self-heating regime.Meanwhile,controlling fluid flow rates can maintain the optimal temperature for reaction rate.Peridotites in ophiolite,continental flood basalt and deep-sea basalt are widespread on the shallow surface of the earth,providing an alternative for CO2 storage.Current research demonstrates that both technology and economic cost are available.Therefore,mafic-ultramafic rocks have huge potential for CO2 sequestration and it is a new approach to CO2 geological sequestration.
