Abstract:In this work, we used a new method to assemble hybrid energy storage devices, combining electrochemical capacitor with lead-acid battery. The ultrathin, flexible and low-weight carbon-nanotube/polyaniline (CNT/PANI) composite films used as supercapacitor electrodes were "directly-inserted" into a lead-acid battery in series or parallel. This quite simple and effective method is promising for large-scale industrialization as it reduces production and process complexity. The assembled hybrid devices showed notably improved properties, including a 19% increase in specific capacity, a 21% increase in specific energy or a 6% increase in specific power when compared to the conventional independent lead-acid batteries, which can be attributed to the synergic effect of batteries and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Recently, a new hybrid supercapacitor, integrating both the advantages of supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, was produced and rapidly turned into state-of-the-art energy-store devices with a high energy density, fast power capability, and a long cycle life. In this paper, a new hybrid supercapacitor is fabricated by making use of the benefits of 1D nanomaterials consisting of a carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode and TiO2-B nanowire (TNW) anode, and the preliminary results for such an energy-storage device operating over a wide voltage range (0-2.8 V) are presented. The CNT-TNW supercapacitor, voltage profiles, and cycle life. On the basis of the total weight of both active materials, the CNT-TNW supercapacitor, while maintaining desirable cycling stability. The combination of a CNT cathode and a TNW anode in a non-aqueous electrolyte is proven to be suitable for high-performance hybrid supercapacitor applications; this can reasonably be assigned to the interesting synergistic effects of the two nanomaterials. It is hoped that the results presented in this study might renew interest in the design of nanomaterials. Abstract:Nickel-based layered hydroxides (LDHs) have aroused much interest as promising battery-type electrodes for hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) because of their high theoretical capacity, good safety, and abundant natural resources; however, the electrochemical performances are still notoriously limited owing to their intrinsically poor electrical conductivity and severe agglomeration features. Herein, an elaborate hierarchical NiCo2S4@NiCu-LDH nanotube/nanosheet hybrid electrode is designed and fabricated directly on carbon cloth by a facile multistep solution-based strategy. Through the rational engineering of nanostructures and atomic substitution of nickel by copper, the optimized NiCo2S4@NiCu-LDH hybrid electrode can yield a high areal capacity of 632.0 mu Ah/cm(2) at a current density of 2 mA/cm(2) and a good rate capability. Furthermore, the assembled flexible solid-state HSC device employing the NiCo2S4@NiCu-LDH exhibits a maximum volumetric energy density of 2.7 mWh/cm(3) at a power density of 21.3 mW/cm(3) with a robust long-term cycling stability over 2000 cycles and outstanding flexibility under repeated bending tests. Our work demonstrates the possibility of designing and fabricating nickel-based LDHs as superior battery-type electrodes towards highly durable and efficient flexible energy storage devices.
Nanohybrid TiN/Vertical graphene for high-performance supercapacitor applications

Abstract:Transition metal nitrides are promising materials for supercapacitor electrodes owing to their high electrochemical capacity and good chemical stability. However, it remains challenging to control crystallinity, electrical conductivity and electrochemical active sites in the common routes of synthesizing these materials. Here we use a one-step and scalable transferred arc method to prepare TiN nanoparticles, which possess a well-defined cubic crystal structure with a nano-size distribution of 5-20 nm. The TiN nanoparticles are then deposited onto plasma-produced vertical graphene (VG) support materials to form hybrid TiN/VG electrodes for supercapacitors. In aqueous Li2SO4 electrolyte operated at a voltage window of 1.0 V, the TiN/VG hybrid displays areal capacitance more than four times higher than that of commercial TiN deposited VG hybrid. As the voltage window is expanded to 1.8 V, the TiN/VG electrode can achieve areal capacitance of 9.0 mF cm(-2) at a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1) while maintaining 89.5% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles, which are among the highest values reported for TiN nanoparticles. These results indicate that TiN nanoparticles produced by the transferred arc technique are highly promising for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are battery-electrode materials with great application potential of battery-type supercapacitors owing to their abundant active metal sites and surface functional groups. The traditional LDHs structure is easy to aggregate and collapse. In this work, the stable cobalt zeolite imidazole framework (Co-ZIF) was used as the derived template to grow LDHs nanosheets in situ to increase the contact area with the electrolyte, and polyaniline (PANI) as the conductive bridge to provide a rapid charge transfer pathway. The fabricated NiCo-LDH@PANI hollow structure had a specific capacity (1315 C·g-1 at 1 A·g-1) and achieved a rated capacity of 951 C·g-1 at 20 A·g-1. Furthermore, The battery-supercapacitor hybrid device (NiCo-LDH@PANI//AC) exhibited an energy density of 66.2 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 800 W·kg-1 and 95.5% capacitance retention after 20,000 cycles.

Abstract:Zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (Zn-HSCs), combined with the superiorities of supercapacitors and batteries, are regarded to have evolutive potential in devices of energy storage. Herein, the nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene/polyaniline nanoarrays (NSG/PANI) have been successfully compounded by in-situ polymerization. The structural characterization shows that the NSG/PANI-50 nanocomposite possess more active sites and vertically arranged PANI nanoarrays on the surface of NSG. The Zn-HSCs devices assembled by the zinc foil as anode, NSG/PANI-x (x = 30, 50, 70) as cathode and ZnSO4 as electrolyte (NSG/PANI//ZnSO4 (aq.)//Zn) show extraordinary energy storage properties. The prepared NSG/PANI-50//Zn device exhibits exceptional specific capacitance of 268.4 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 (the retention rate is 75.2% as the current density increased 20-times from 0.1 A g−1 to 2 A g−1), high energy density (95.4 Wh kg−1) and excellent capacitance retention rate of ~ 93% at 5 A g−1 after 10,000 cycles. The diffusion-controlled behavior (72% of the total storage charge at 5 mV s−1) suggests that the diffusion-controlled process acts a momentous role in the process of energy storage. The impressive results demonstrate that NSG/PANI nanocomposite could be a potential high-performance electrode material for Zn-ion hybrid energy systems.

The hybrid supercapacitor device assembled using the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a high specific capacity of 84.3 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and excellent capacity retention of 92 % after 10,000 cycles. A high energy density of 67.47 Wh kg −1 can be delivered at a power density of 0.84 kW kg −1 . When used in LIBs, the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a reliable reversible specific capacity of 329 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 100 cycles and a high capacity retention of 90 % after 5000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Abstract:Hybrid supercapacitor or supercapattery devices have drawn considerable interest due to their remarkable power (Pd) and energy (Ed) densities, and outstanding cyclic stability when compared to traditional storage devices. Here in, we synthesized the manganese niobium sulfide (MnNbS) through a hydrothermal approach. To improve the electrochemical performances of MnNbS, it was blended with polyaniline (PANI) at different mass ratios. Initially, the electrochemical analysis of MnNbS/PANI was evaluated using a three‐electrode setup. The three‐electrode configuration employs a system of electrodes comprising the working, counter, and reference electrodes. At 2 A/g, MnNbS/PANI had an enhanced specific capacity (Cs) of 1366 C/g. Next, to design a supercapattery energy storage device, a two electrode system was fabricated. Two‐electrode system offers better performance and greater flexibility, making it an ideal choice for developing high‐performance supercapacitors. Activated carbon (AC) and MnNbS/PANI were utilized as the negative and positive electrodes, respectively, in the two‐electrode setup. It showed a outstanding value of Ed of 26.2 Wh/kg and Pd of 2072 W/kg with Cs of 118 C/g. The device's durability was investigated using 1000 charge‐discharge cycles, which showed a capacity retention of 79 %. Our study reveals that the MnNbS/PANI (wt. ratio of 80/20 %) can be a promising electrode for supercapattery applications. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
Hybrid Super-Aligned Carbon Nanotube/Carbon Black Conductive Networks: A Strategy to Improve Both Electrical Conductivity and Capacity for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Super-aligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) films drawn from SACNT arrays are uniformly introduced into LiCoO2-Super P composite cathodes by a cold-rolling method, and a hybrid conductive network consisting of SACNTs and carbon black powders is obtained. This attempt results in reduced percolation threshold and increased conductivity of the LiCoO2-Super P cathodes with addition of less than 0.01 wt% of SACNTs. The strength and flexibility of the LiCoO2-Super P-SACNT composites can be improved significantly due to the excellent mechanical properties of SACNTs. The continuous SACNT films play an important role for the formation of a homogeneous network for long-range conductive pathways. Super P is also an essential component to form short-range conductive pathways. By comparing with control samples that only contain Super P or SACNT films, we demonstrate that the LiCoO2-Super P-SACNT composites possess the best cycling stability (150 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 C with a capacity retention of 99.7% after 50 cycles) and rate capability (87 mA h g(-1) at 5 C). Combining both short-range and long-range conduction, the hybrid Super P-SACNT conductive network manifests itself as a promising strategy to improve the battery performances with a minimum amount of conductive fillers. Preparation and electrochemical performance of hyper-networked Li4Ti5O12/carbon hybrid nanofiber sheets for a battery-supercapacitor hybrid system

Abstract:Hyper-networked Li(4)Ti(5)O(12)/carbon hybrid nanofiber sheets that contain both a faradaically rechargeable battery-type component, namely Li(4)Ti(5)O(12), and a non-faradaically rechargeable supercapacitor-type component, namely N-enriched carbon, are prepared by electrospinning and their dual function as a negative electrode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and a capacitor is tested for a new class of hybrid energy storage (denoted BatCap). An aqueous solution composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone, lithium hydroxide, titanium(IV) bis(ammonium-lactato)dihydroxide and ammonium persulfate is electrospun to obtain hyper-networked nanofiber sheets. Next, the sheets are exposed to pyrrole monomer vapor to prepare the polypyrrole-coated nanofiber sheets (PPy-HNS). The hyper-networked Li(4)Ti(5)O(12)/N-enriched carbon hybrid nanofiber sheets (LTO/C-HNS) are then obtained by a stepwise heat treatment of the PPy-HNS. The LTO/C-HNS deliver a specific capacity of 135 mAh g(-1) at 4000 mA g(-1) as a negative electrode for LIBs. In addition, potentiodynamic experiments are performed using a full cell with activated carbon (AC) as the positive electrode and LTO/C-HNS as the negative electrode to estimate the capacitance properties. This new asymmetric electrode system exhibits a high energy density of 91 W kg(-1) and 22 W kg(-1) at power densities of 50 W kg(-1) and 4000 W kg(-1), respectively, which are superior to the values observed for the AC [symbol: see text] AC symmetric electrode system.

Abstract:The rational selection and assembly of materials are central issues in the development of energy conversion and storage applications. Incorporating the utilization of carbon nanotubes cathode and TiO2 nanotubes anode in energy storage, a nonaqueous hybrid supercapacitor was developed in order to significantly increase the energy density of the supercapacitor. The electrochemical performance of the hybrid supercapacitor is characterized by charge/discharge test and cyclic voltam-mograms. According to the voltage value, the energy density of the asymmetric supercapacitor, by applying a potential varying from 0 to 2.8 V, is found to be 14.4 Wh/kg at upwards of 10 C, which is twice more than for the conventional symmetric supercapacitor utilizing carbon nanotubes, while maintaining desirable cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:3D hybrids of interconnected porous carbon (PC) nanosheets/vertically aligned polyaniline (Pani) nanowires are prepared by a cost-effective facile approach and used as high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. The 3D PC/Pani hybrids are obtained by a simple in situ growth of Pani on 3D PC with a high specific surface area and good electrochemical performance fabricated via a one-step thermal pyrolysis of potassium citrate. The 3D PC/Pani hybrids show an excellent specific capacitance of 512 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) in the three-electrode configuration, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of PC and Pani in the composite. In addition, the as-assembled asymmetric supercapacitor of PC/Pani composites exhibits good capacitive properties and a long-term cycling stability of 91% after 3000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). Owing to its cost-effective preparation and high electrochemical performance, the PC/Pani hybrid composite has significant potential for use as practical electrode materials of supercapacitors.
Zinc Strontium Sulfide@Carbon nanotube composite electrode materials for high-performance supercapattery devices

Abstract:High-performance energy storage devices (ESD) are essential to address the rising demand for electric energy. Hybrid energy storage systems provide moderate energy and power density as it merges batteries and supercapacitors. This study used the zinc strontium sulfide (ZnSrS) incorporated with carbon nanotube (CNT) for supercapattery devices. The surface area of CNT@ZnSrS was determined using Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) calculations to be 17.73 m 2 g −1 . A three-electrode configuration was used to compute the specific capacity of CNT, ZnSrS, and CNT@ZnSrS. The anticipated capacity for CNT@ZnSrS was 788 Cg −1 , higher than individual ZnSrS and CNT. In the design of the supercapattery, CNT@ZnSrS served as a positive, while activated carbon was the negative electrode. The specific capacity of the supercapattery device (CNT@ZnSrS//AC) was 192 Cg −1 . The supercapattery (CNT@ZnSrS//AC) delivers a superior energy density of 45.23 Wh-kg −1 . Additionally, the stability test on the supercapattery device (CNT@ZnSrS//AC) was performed by submitting it to 10,000 consecutive charging/discharging cycles. After completing these cycles, this device shows excellent capacity retention of 91%. This research indicates that incorporating CNT significantly improves the electrochemical performance of ZnSrS as advanced material for energy in hybrid energy storage devices in the future.

Abstract:Developing hybrid supercapacitor-battery energy storage devices for applications in electric vehicles is attractive because of their high energy density and short charge/discharge time. In this study, flexible MnO2 nanoparticle-coated air-oxidized carbon nanotube (MnO2/aCNT) electrodes are fabricated by the in situ redox reaction of KMnO4 and aCNTs at room temperature. The MnO2 nanoparticles have diameters of similar to 10 nm. There is a strong chemical interaction between the MnO2 active material and aCNTs as a result of the Mn-O-C linkage. The flexible aCNT network can alleviate the strain from the MnO2 volume change and maintain the electrode integrity during rapid charge/discharge. The aCNT framework also provides a continuous and rapid electron pathway and ensures uniform dispersion of the MnO2 nanoparticles. The presence of MnO2 nanoparticles provides short pathways for Li-ion diffusion and allows interfacial capacitive lithium storage for ultrafast and reversible lithium storage. We report the best high-current performance to date for MnO2/C electrodes, of 395.8 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1), and 630.2 mA h g(-1) after 150 cycles at 2 A g(-1). Abstract:Nickel-phosphorus semimetallic compounds with an open-framework structure have attracted increasing interests as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. In this work, ultrafine Ni-P@Ni nanotubes (NTs) with a novel three-dimensional network are synthesized by using a one-pot hydrothermal method under different temperatures to form the electrode material for hybrid supercapacitors. The energy storage performances of the Ni-P@Ni NTs electrodes are systematically investigated, and the results demonstrate that the Ni-P@Ni NTs possess a superior specific capacity of 771.8 C g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) in a three-electrode cell. Remarkably, a specific capacity of 350.2 C g(-1) can still be maintained when the current density increases up to 30 A g(-1). The energy storage performance of the as-prepared Ni-P nanowires (NWs) and Ni-11(HPO3)(8)(OH)(6)@Ni nanoparticles (NPs) also are evaluated for comparison. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) is assembled with the Ni-P@Ni NTs as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode. The as-assembled HSCs show a high energy density of 58.7 Wh kg(-1) at a relatively high-power density of 945 W kg(-1), outweighing most of the hybrid supercapacitors reported in the literature. Furthermore, such a hybrid supercapacitor displays an excellent cycling stability (91.2% after 6000 cycles at 5 A g(-1)) under a voltage of 1.6 V. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To effectively avoid the "dead volume" and improve the utilization ratio of the electrode material, a novel longan-like hybrid structure has been designed and fabricated by controlled growth of Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets on the surface of yolk-shell PPy nanospheres at a mild reaction temperature. The strategy takes full advantages of the hollow structure and further reduces the charge transport distance, leading to high conductivity and energy storage capacity of longan-like hybrid structures. Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) exhibits a high retention ratio of 91.5% for capacitance after 6000 continuous cycles and an impressive energy density of 34 W h kg(-1) at 755 W kg(-1). Remarkably, two devices in series have a higher cell-voltage output of 3.0 V compared to a single device. This work will supply a new hollow nanostructure design strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of electrode materials.
Advanced hybrid supercapacitors assembled with CoNi LDH nanoflowers and nanosheets as high-performance cathode materials

Abstract:In this work, CoNi layered double hydroxide with flower-like nanostructures (CoNi LDH NFs) and nanosheet-based shape (CoNi LDH NSs) were respectively prepared through a facile solvothermal approach, during which a mixed solvent of deionized water and ethylene glycol with different volume ratio was used. The NFs possessed a specific surface area of 101.28 m 2 g −1 and was larger than the 38.54 m 2 g −1 for NSs. The electrochemical performance of these CoNi LDHs was investigated in three-electrode & two-electrode systems, respectively, and they exhibited the battery-type electrochemical response. The CoNi LDH NFs delivered a specific capacity of 768.3C g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 643.1C g −1 at 10 A g −1 , in contrast, the CoNi LDH NSs exhibited an inferior capacity of 669.3C g −1 . To evaluate the practical application potential in the field of supercapacitor , the hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device was assembled with these CoNi LDHs as cathode and activated carbon (AC) as anode. The CoNi LDH NFs//AC HSC delivered an energy density ( ED ) of 37.1 W h kg −1 at the power density ( PD ) of 748.0 W kg −1 , which was higher than the 31.0 W h kg −1 for NSs-based HSC. The cycling performance and structural stability of such LDHs were investigated over 4000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g −1 , and just a little capacity decay at the end of cycling was found. The CoNi LDH NFs & NSs may serve as battery-grade electrode materials with high performance and probably have great application potential in electrochemical energy storage. Besides, the present synthetic method is simple and can be extended to the preparation of other LDHs for the assembly of advanced HSC device with superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were polymerized with polyaniline (PANI) via an in-situ polymerization approach. These functionalized CNTs (PANI-CNTs) were added in various concentrations to the sono-chemically synthesized Co-Ni binary transition metals phosphate (CoNi(PO4)2) to ultimately have their nanocomposites. Electron microscopy (SEM & HRTEM) was employed to reveal the morphology and microscopic features. The structural evaluation of metal phosphate and PANI/CNTs was done by X-ray diffractometer analysis, whereas chemical grafting of cobalt nickel phosphate (CoNi(PO4)2) was done by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The hierarchical structured CoNi(PO4)2 with 40 mg PANI/CNTs mass (CNP40) presented enhanced specific capacity of 1268 Cg−1 (2136 F g−1 at 1.5 F g−1) with excellent diffusive behavior (b = 0.5). A resulted hybrid supercapacitor device consisting of CNP40 as +ve electrode and activated carbon AC) as −ve electrode, presented excellent energy density of ∼87 Whkg−1 with good power density of 680 W kg−1 maintained to 32.9 W kg−1 (@ 20,400 W kg−1) with 37% rate performance, and excellent cyclic performance (∼100%) after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, capacitive-diffusive analysis revealed that the device showed 55% diffusive and 45% capacitive behaviour. This improved electrochemical performance might be attributed mainly to the uniform and hierarchical chemical grafted morphology of the novel combination of binary phosphates and PANI functionalized CNTs in the nanocomposite obtained via a rather different sonochemical approach.
