Abstract:Cyclotrimerization of alkynes to aromatics represents a promising approach to two-dimensional conjugated networks due to its single-reactant and atom-economy attributes, in comparison with other multicomponent coupling reactions. However, the reaction mechanism of alkyne cyclotrimerization has not yet been well understood due to characterization challenges. In this work, we take a surface reaction approach to study fundamental polymerization mechanism by using a diyne monomer named 4,4'-diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl as a test bed. We have succeeded in directly characterizing reactants, intermediates, and their reaction products with the aid of scanning tunneling microscope, which allows us to gain mechanistic insights into the reaction pathways. By combining with density functional theory calculation, our result has revealed for the first time that the polycyclotrimerization is a two-step [2+2+2] cyclization reaction. This work provides an in-depth understanding of polycyclotrimerization process at the atomic level, offering a new avenue to design and construct of single-atom-thick conjugated networks.
Probing the electronic structure and photophysics of thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives in solution

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrroles are a popular class of electron-withdrawing unit in optoelectronic materials. When combined with electron donating side-chain functional groups such as thiophenes, they form a very broad class of donor-acceptor molecules: thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrroles (TDPPs). Despite their widescale use in biosensors and photovoltaic materials, studies have yet to establish the important link between the electronic structure of the specific TDPP and the critical optical properties. To bridge this gap, ultrafast transient absorption with 22 fs time resolution has been used to explore the photophysics of three prototypical TDPP molecules: a monomer, dimer and polymer in solution. These studies show that the photophysics of these molecular prototypes under visible photoexcitation are determined by just two excited electronic states, having very different electronic characters (one is optically bright, the other dark), their relative energetic ordering and the timescales for internal conversion from one to the other and/or to the ground state. The underlying difference in electronic structure alters the branching between these excited states and their associated dynamics. In turn, these factors dictate the fluorescence quantum yields, which are shown to vary by ~1-2 orders of magnitude across the TDPP prototypes investigated here. The fast non-radiative transfer of molecules from the bright to dark states is mediated by conical intersections. Remarkably, wavepacket signals in the measured transient absorption data carry signatures of the nuclear motions that enable mixing of the electronic-nuclear wavefunction and facilitate non-adiabatic coupling between the bright and dark states.

Abstract:Correlations of spin, electronic and magnetic resonance parameters of charge carriers stabilized in poly(3-alkylthiophene) oligomers with their band structure, polymerization degree, side substitutes, and conformation established by using the density functional theory and electron paramagnetic resonance methods. The comparison of calculated and experimental data identified spin distribution on oligomer chains with different conformations. The type and size of alkyl substituent of polymer matrix governs the band gap, mobility, and spin-orbit coupling of polaron charge carriers. The introduce of small aromatic additives between oligomer chains initiates their self-assembly crystallization and formation of organic:organic spinterfase which accelerate spin-assisted electronic and magnetic processes in the composite. The research revealed that embedding aromatic hydrocarbons into oligomer bulk allows continuous and discrete handling of electronic spin-assisted processes carrying out in respective organic/organic composites. The key role of spinterfacial effects in the development of a new generation of molecular devices with actively tuned spin-assisted functionality is described.

Abstract:Polymerization of a phenylacetylene monomer bearing a dendron moiety was carried out by using a rhodium complex Rh[(nbd)Cl_2]_2 as catalyst.The structure of the resultant was characterized with infrared(IR),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopic techniques;the experimental data confirmed the generation of the expected polyphenylacetylene derivative(P1) with dendron pendants.P1 was soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform,N,N-dimethylformamide oxide,and tetrahydrofurran(THF),and its average molecular weight was about 57300.The steric repulsion of between the bulky dendritic side chains make the polymer main-chain take a stereoregular cis-cisoid conformation.Consequently,P1 exhibits a pronounced shoulder at around 440 nm in the absorption spectrum its THF solution.Meanwhile,the bulky dendrons around the polymer main-chain protect the main-chain from thermal-induced decomposition via the jacket effect,thus P1 lost 5% of its weight at a temperature of 295℃,which is about 70℃ higher than its parent polymer,or polyphenylacetylene.

However, the DArP of 4FBT with DCBT-2Br and DABT-2Br produced PThs containing C-H/C-H homo-coupling defects along with relatively lower molecular weights. Detailed theoretical analysis suggests that the occurrence of C-Br reduction-provoked C-H/C-H homo-coupling for 4FBT/DCBT-2Br and 4FBT/DABT-2Br monomer pairs originated from the poor selectivity between the cis- and trans-forms of transition states in the concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) process is responsible for the formation of structural defects and depressed molecular weights. This research reveals that a C-H monomer with high reactivity and selectivity is not sufficient for the synthesis of well-defined conjugated polymers via DArP, and the structure of the C-Br monomer also has a significant impact on the results of DArP via influencing the catalytic cycles.

Abstract:We report herein the photophysics of three two-dimensional polythiophene derivatives, with different lengths of thienylene-vinylene conjugated side chains, in comparison with regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). In solution, all evolution from stimulated emission to photoinduced absorption (PIA) at emission peak is discovered with increasing length of side chains, indicating larger steric hindrance by longer side chains. The exciton lifetime is reduced by a factor of five when the thienylene-vinylene side chain is prolonged to three units. In the film form, we investigate the dynamics of the two PIA bands, assigned to intrachain exciton and interchain polaron pairs, respectively. The analysis of the dynamics Suggests that their intrachain exciton decays are similar to the one-dimensional P3HT. The recombination possibility of delocalized interchain polaron pairs Occurring in 0.9 ps is reduced with longer thienylene-vinylene side chain samples. Compared with regioregular P3HT film, which self-organizes to form lamellae crystal morphology, the morphologies of these three two-dimensional polythiophenes are amorphous, attributed to the large steric hindrance caused by the existence of side chains. This design of polythiophene derivatives provides the reduction of recombination possibility for delocalized interchain polaron pairs generated in the polymer.

Abstract:Regioregular polythiophenes have been widely used in organic semiconducting applications due to their crystallinity and solubility. The alkylsulfanyl and alkylsulfonyl side chains could serve as useful synthetic strategy for adjusting the electronic properties of organic semiconductors. In this paper, head-to-tail coupled and highly regioregular poly(3-octylthiothiophene)s (PTS) and poly(3-octylsulfonylthiophene)s (PTSO2 ) were synthesized through direct (hetero)arylation polymerization. The head-to-tail (HT) regioregularity of the polymer were determined by the widely used 1H NMR method. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of poly(3-alkylthiophene) were lowered by adjusting the oxidation state of sulfur from sulfanyl to sulfonyl. The effects of these functional side chains are presented through UV−vis, fluorescence, and electrochemical measurements, as well as crystallographic analysis of these synthetic polymers.

Abstract:The use of n- and p-dopable conjugated polymers as both the working and counter electrodes in an electrochemical device has always attracted chemists and has stimulated the design of new molecules with a low energy gap that can be p- and n-doped efficiently. The present paper reports the spectroelectrochemical study of polymers obtained from several dithienothiophene isomers, molecules with three thiophene rings fused in different positions. Of the six isomers, poly(dithieno[3,4-b:3′,2′-d]thiophene) and poly(dithieno[3,4-b:2′,3′-d] thiophene) were tested against poly(dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene) and poly(dithieno[3,4-b:3′,4′-d]thiophene). The differences in their performance, related to the geometry of the starting molecules and to enchainment, are reported and discussed.

Abstract:A series of 2,3,5,6-tetra-substituted pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPP) derivatives carrying thienyl-, 3,4-ethylenedioxy-thienyl- (EDOT-) and 3,4-ethylenedithiathienyl- (EDTT-) substituent groups have been synthesized and electrochemically polymerized. The polymers were investigated using UV/vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the growth of the polymers proceeded as random coupling of the thiophene groups in the 2-,3-,5-, and 6-positions of the DPP chromophore. In the cross-linked polymers, conjugated sequences were only built through coupling of thiophene groups in 3,6-positions, and separated by non-conjugated sequences through coupling with thiophene units in other positions of the DPP core.

Abstract:Four different polymorphic conformations of diethyl 5,5'-[5,5'-[2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-dioxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-diyl]bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl)]difuran-2-carboxylate (DPP-(CF)2), namely, DPP-(CF)2-α, DPP-(CF)2-β, DPP-(CF)2-γ, and DPP-(CF)2-ω, were identified from X-ray diffraction analysis conducted on their thin films and single crystals. Highly crystalline and well-textured thin films of these four polymorphs were successfully prepared via postgrowth solvent vapor and thermal annealing treatments to investigate the polymorphic phase-dependent optical and electrical properties of DPP-(CF)2. Interestingly, during the phase transition from DPP-(CF)2-α to DPP-(CF)2-ω, the optical band gap decreases from 1.75 to 1.5 eV because of the enhanced π-π interaction between the neighboring molecules. Except for DPP-(CF)2-γ, the other three phases show ambipolar charge transport. Although DPP-(CF)2-β and DPP-(CF)2-γ exhibit a similar way of packing, a small increment in the π-π-stacking distance (0.006 Å) and twist conformation of the grafted electron-donating moieties of DPP-(CF)2-γ are found to reduce its hole mobility.

Abstract:In this research, two polymers of P1 and P2 based on monomers consisting of thiophene, 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) are designed and obtained via Stille coupling polycondensation. The material shows excellent coplanarity and structural regularity due to the fine planarity of DPP itself and the weak non-covalent bonding interactions existing between the three units. Two different lengths of non-conjugated side chains are introduced and this has an effect on the intermolecular chain stacking, causing the film absorption to display different characteristic properties. On the other hand, the difference in the side chains does not have a significant effect on the thermal stability and the energy levels of the frontier orbitals of the materials, which is related to the fact that the materials both feature extremely high conjugation lengths and specific molecular compositions. Microscopic investigations targeting the side chains provide a contribution to the further design of organic semiconductor materials that meet device requirements. Tests based on organic transistors show a slight difference in conductivity between the two polymers, with P2 having better hole mobility than P1. This study highlights the importance of the impact of side chains on device performance, especially in the field of organic electronics.

Abstract:Thiophene and thieno [3, 2-b] thiophene as an electron rich donor linked with conjugated side chains of 3-octylrhodanine as an acceptor was designed, polymerized via Stille polycondensation route and two copolymers, PTMOT-T (P1) and PTMOT-TT (P2) was obtained. Polymers was completely characterized by different sophisticated instruments (FT-IR, 1 HNMR, TGA, GPC, XRD and DFT simulations). Presence of 3-octylrhodanine side chain units was influences the solubility, conformations and electronic properties of resulted polymers. Polymers displayed broad optical absorption, compatible molecular orbitals HOMO and LUMO levels and good thermal stability. Structural features and influence of side chain in PTMOT-T (P1) and PTMOT-TT (P2) was discussed and it could be potential materials for optoelectronic applications. This work showed that the slight modification side chain structure and or side chain engineering is plays a crucial role to tune the structural and optoelectronic properties of desired polymers.

Abstract:One of the most important factors in life today is energy and how to get it. Different methods are used to develop low-cost, high-performance materials for electrical devices such as solar cells. In this paper, some properties of three polymer materials are investigated. Through the use of UV-visible spectrum, we have been able to discover several properties that help determine the level of materials in terms of electrical and electronic devices. Controlled Synthesis of Poly[(3-alkylthio)thiophene]s and Their Application to Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:Regioregular polythiophenes have been widely used in organic electronic applications due to their solution processability with chemical modification through side chain engineering, as well as their microstructural organization and good hole transport properties. Here, we introduce alkylthio side chains, (poly[(3-alkylthio)thiophene]s; P3ATTs), with strong noncovalent sulfur molecular interactions, to main chain thienyl backbones. These P3ATTs were compared with alkyl-substituted polythiophene (poly(3-alkylthiophene); P3AT) variants such that the effects of straight (hexyl and decyl) and branched (2-ethylhexyl) side chains (with and without S atoms) on their thin-film morphologies and crystalline states could be investigated. P3ATTs with linear alkylthio side chains (P3HTT, hexylthio; P3DTT, decylthio) did not attain the expected higher organic field-effect transistor (OFET) mobilities with respect to P3HT (hexyl) and P3DT (decyl) mainly due to their lower regioregularity (76–78%), although P3ATTs exhibit an enhanced tendency for aggregation and compact molecular packing, as indicated by the red-shifting of the absorption spectra and the shortening of the π–π stacking distance, respectively. Moreover, the loss of regioregularity issue can be solved by introducing more soluble 2-ethylhexylthio branched side chains to form poly[3-(2-ethylhexylthio)thiophene] (P3EHTT), which provides enhanced crystallinity and efficient charge mobility (increased by up to a factor of 3) with respect to the poly(2-ethylhexylthiophene) (P3EHT) without S atoms in the side moieties. Abstract:Two novel polythiophenes with 1,3-dioxane group in the side chain named poly[3-(1,3-dioxane-2-ylethyl)thiophene] (PDT) and poly[3-(1,3-dioxane-2-ylethyl)-4-methylthiophene] (PDMT) were synthesized via oxidative polymerization firstly to form their precursor polymers and substitution secondly to obtain the target polymers in this paper. The chemical structures, molecular weights, thermal properties of the polymers were characterized by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, GPC, and TGA respectively, indicating that both polymers had high molecular weight and good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) of both polymers were investigated and the results showed that the maximum absorption and emission wavelengths of PDMT were blue-shifted than that of PDT due to its methyl-substitution at 4-position in thiophene.

Abstract:Herein, the relationship between supramolecularly self-assembled microstructures and the chemical structures of photoluminescent molecules is discussed. A series of non-amphiphilic molecules with different length alkyl chains (4–14), central mesogenic groups, and chemical linkers were designed and synthesized. Intricate analysis shows that the supramolecular assembly varies with change in torsion angle of the thiophene linking group on elongation of the alkyl chain. Small angle X-ray scattering measurement shows long range molecular interaction for lower alkyl chain length, AFM reveals circular domains for octyl and decyl alkyl group polymers. UV-Visible and photoluminescence studies in solution and thin-film show that the J-aggregate patterns for the circular domain of the polymer backbone has a major effect on the polymer absorbance, and produces a larger shift for the photoluminescence signals at higher wavelengths. Excitation polarisation studies show a change in molecular ordering in various colour regions with change in aggregation by means of maximum dichroic ratio for the circular domain assembly. Charge carrier mobility and cyclic voltammetry studies show higher mobility and reduced band gap for these circular domain polymers. Dynamic light scattering studies of octyl alkyl chain polymers show a bimodal distribution, which shows the apparent nature of anisotropy in solution.

Abstract:Synthesis and electropolymerization of the new bisthienyl-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole monomer 1,4-diketo-2,5-di-hexyl-3,6-bis{[2-(3',4'-ethylenedi-oxy)thienyl]phenyl}pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (EDOT-DPP-EDOT) is reported. EDOT-DPP-EDOT exhibits a low oxidation potential of 0.67 V versus ferrocene and can be electropolymerized to form a stable, well adherent polymer thin film at the ITO anode. The polymer film is insoluble in organic solvents, non-fluores cent, but exhibits reversible electrochromic properties with color changes from deep blue in the neutral state via transparent gray to purple red in the oxidized state. The reversibility in air is excellent.
