Abstract:In this study, the preparation methods, types, and developments of cellulose aerogels are comprehensively reviewed and evaluated. Aerogels can be prepared from synthetic or natural organic or inorganic materials. However, cellulose-based aerogels have gained tremendous attention in the past few years because of their biodegradability, abundance, and nontoxicity. In this study, the extraction of cellulose from various sources using different methods is discussed. Moreover, preparation of nanocellulose materials using different processes is reviewed. The different types of solvents used to dissolve cellulose and the various drying methods employed in the preparation of cellulosic aerogels are reviewed critically with a focus on green methods. The recent developments in hybrid aerogels for various applications are also discussed. In addition, the areas requiring further investigation are highlighted, such as the effect of the cellulose source on aerogel properties.

Abstract:<p>Nanocellulose has been widely concerned and applied in recent years. Because of its high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, good modifiability, high mechanical strength, renewability and biodegradability, nanocellulose is particularly suitable as a base for constructing lightweight porous materials. This review summarizes the preparation methods and applications of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials including aerogels, cryogels, xerogels, foams and sponges. The preparation of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials usually involves gelation and drying processes. The characteristics and influencing factors of three main drying methods including freeze, supercritical and evaporation drying are reviewed. In addition, the mechanism of physical and chemical crosslinking during gelation and the effect on the structure and properties of the porous materials in different drying methods are especially focused on. This contribution also introduces the application of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials in the fields of adsorption, biomedicine, energy storage, thermal insulation and sound absorption, flame retardancy and catalysis.</p>

Abstract:Nanocellulose has generated a great deal of interest as a source of nanometer-sized reinforcement, because of its good mechanical properties. In the last few years, nanocellulose has also attracted much attention due to environmental concerns. This review presents an overview of recent developments in this area, including the production, characterization, properties, and range of applications of nanocellulose-based biodegradable polymers, thermoplastic polymers, and porous nanocomposites. After explaining the unique properties of nanocellulose and its various preparation techniques, an orderly introduction of various nanocellulose-reinforced biodegradable polymers such as starch, proteins, alginate, chitosan, and gelatin is provided. Subsequently, the effects of nanocellulose on the properties of thermoplastic polymers such as polyamides, polysulfone, polypropyrol, and polyacronitril are reported. The paper concludes with a presentation of new finding and cutting-edge studies on nanocellulose foam and aerogel composites. Three different types of aerogels, i.e., pristine nanocellulose-based aerogels, modified nanocellulose-based aerogels, and nanocellulose-based templates for aerogels, are discussed, as well as their preparation techniques and properties. In the case of foam composites, the research focus has been on two major preparation techniques, i.e., solvent-mixing/foaming and melt-mixing foaming, their respective challenges, and the properties of the final composites. In some cases, a comparison study between cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofiber-reinforced biodegradable polymers, thermoplastics, and porous nanocomposites was carried out. Considering the vast amount of research on nanocellulose-based composites, special emphasis on such composites isprovided at the end of the review.

Abstract:Cellulosic aerogels are sustainable, biodegradable, and ultra-light porous materials with three-dimensional networks having high specific surface area. Depending on the source of precursor materials, they are categorized into plant-based aerogel, bacterial cellulosic aerogel. Different types of aerogels are also produced from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), cellulose microfibril (CMF) and cellulose nanofibril (CNF). Furthermore, inorganic and organic substances are embedded to produce hybrid aerogel or composite aerogel for the enhancement of its performance in various fields. Mixing, gelation, solvent exchange, and drying (e.g., super critical carbon dioxide or freeze drying) are the basic steps involved in cellulosic aerogel synthesis. Based on the composition of precursors during aerogel synthesis, cellulosic aerogels have broad applications in various fields such as adsorbents, electrodes, sensors, captive deionization materials, catalysts, drug delivery, thermal and sound insulating materials. This review provided consolidated information on: (i) classification of cellulosic aerogels based on the sources of raw materials, (ii) processes involved to produce the cellulosic aerogel, (iii) cellulosic aerogel synthesized from MCC, NCC, CMF and CNF, (iv) nano particle doped cellulosic aerogel, and (v) its application in various field with future perspectives.

Abstract:<p>The rapid development of modern industry and excessive consumption of petroleum‐based polymers have triggered a double crisis presenting a shortage of nonrenewable resources and environmental pollution. However, this has provided an opportunity to stimulate researchers to harness native biobased materials for novel advanced materials and applications. Nanocellulose‐based aerogels, using abundant and sustainable cellulose as raw material, present a third‐generation of aerogels that combine traditional aerogels with high porosity and large specific surface area, as well as the excellent properties of cellulose itself. Currently, nanocellulose aerogels provide a highly attention‐catching platform for a wide range of functional applications in various fields, e.g., adsorption, separation, energy storage, thermal insulation, electromagnetic interference shielding, and biomedical applications. Here, the preparation methods, modification strategies, composite fabrications, and further applications of nanocellulose aerogels are summarized, with additional discussions regarding the prospects and potential challenges in future development.</p>

Abstract:This review discusses the development and application of nanocellulose (NC)-aerogels, a sustainable and biodegradable biomaterial, with enhanced flame retardant (FR) properties. NC-aerogels combine the excellent physical and mechanical properties of NC with the low density and thermal conductivity of aerogels, making them promising for thermal insulation and other fields. However, the flammability of NC-aerogels limits their use in some applications, such as electromagnetic interference shielding, oil/water separation, and flame-resistant textiles. The review covers the design, fabrication, modification, and working mechanism of NC porous materials, focusing on how advanced technologies can impart FR properties into them. The review also evaluates the FR performance of NC-aerogels by employing widely recognized tests, such as the limited oxygen index, cone calorimeter, and UL-94. The review also explores the integration of innovative and eco-friendly materials, such as MXene, metal-organic frameworks, dopamine, lignin, and alginate, into NC-aerogels, to improve their FR performance and functionality. The review concludes by outlining the potential, challenges, and limitations of future research on FR NC-aerogels, identifying the obstacles and potential solutions, and understanding the current progress and gaps in the field.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil fuels and growing environmental concerns, the modernized era of technology is in desperate need of sustainable and eco-friendly materials. The industrial sector surely has enough resources to produce cost-effective, renewable, reusable, and sustainable raw materials. The family of very porous solid materials known as aerogels has a variety of exceptional qualities, such as high porosity, high specific surface area, ultralow density, and superior thermal, acoustic, and dielectric properties. As a result, aerogels have the potential to be used for many different purposes, such as absorbents, supercapacitors, energy storage, and catalytic supports. Recently, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) aerogels have attracted remarkable attention for their large-scale utilization because of their high absorption capacity, low density, biodegradability, large surface area, high porosity, and biocompatibility. Recent advancements have confirmed that CNF-based hybrid aerogels can be proposed as the most privileged and promising novel material in various applications. This comprehensive review highlights the recent reports of the CNF-based hybrid aerogels, including their properties and frequent preparation approaches, in addition to their new applications in the areas of fire retardant, water and oil separation, supercapacitors, environmental, and CO 2 capture. It is also assumed that this article will promote additional investigation and establish innovative capabilities to enhance novel CNF-based hybrid aerogels with new and exciting applications.

Abstract:Mitigating the effect of climate change toward a sustainable development is one of the main challenges of our century. The emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), is a leading cause of the global warming crisis. To address this issue, various sustainable strategies have been formulated for CO2 capture. Renewable nanocellulose aerogels have risen as a highly attractive candidate for CO2 capture thanks to their porous and surface-tunable nature. Nanocellulose offer distinctive characteristics, including significant aspect ratios, exceptional biodegradability, lightweight nature, and the ability for chemical modification due to the abundant presence of hydroxyl groups. In this review, recent research studies on nanocellulose-based aerogels designed for CO2 absorption have been highlighted. The state-of-the-art of nanocellulose-based aerogel has been thoroughly assessed, including their synthesis, drying methods, and characterization techniques. Additionally, discussions were held about the mechanisms of CO2 adsorption, the effects of the porous structure, surface functionalization, and experimental parameters. Ultimately, this synthesis review provides an overview of the achieved adsorption rates using nanocellulose-based aerogels and outlines potential improvements that could lead to optimal adsorption rates. Overall, this research holds significant promise for tackling the challenges of climate change and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Abstract:Nanofibrillated cellulose and microfibrillated cellulose are potential raw materials separated from plant fibers with a high aspect ratio and excellent mechanical properties, which can be applied in various fields (packaging, medicine, etc.). They have unique advantages in the preparation of aerogels and foams, and have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Cellulose-based porous materials have good biodegradability and biocompatibility, while high porosity and high specific surface area endow them with strong mechanical properties and liquid retention performance, which can be used in wall construction, sewage treatment and other fields. At present, the preparation method of this material has been widely reported, however, due to various process problems, the actual production has not been realized. In this paper, we summarize the existing technical problems and main solutions; in the meantime, two stable systems and several drying processes are described, and the application potential of cellulose-based porous materials in the future is described, which provides a reference for subsequent research.

Abstract:Highly porous and lightweight aerogels of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have emerged as a promising class of material. This study delves into the impact of the composition (lignocellulose nanofibers–LCNFs and CNFs) and the drying methods (supercritical drying and freeze-drying) on the morphology and the properties of nanocellulose-based aerogels. The investigation evaluates the concentrations of nanofibers and the influence of lignin, a constituent of LCNFs recognized for enhancing the rigidity of plant cell walls, on the aerogel's properties. The shrinkage rates, density, pore structure, and mechanical properties of the obtained aerogels are comprehensively compared. Supercritical drying proves advantageous for aerogel formation, resulting in materials with lower density and higher surface area than their freeze-dried counterparts at each concentration level. The use of acetone for supercritical drying contributes to reduce the shrinkage rates compared to ethanol. This decrease is attributed to the formation of a more rigid hydrogel during solvent exchange. Freeze-drying exhibits the lowest shrinkage rates and relatively higher porosity. The presence of lignin in the nanofibers influences the microstructure, yielding smoother and thicker pore walls. This study contributes to the comprehensive understanding of the intricate factors shaping nanocellulose aerogel properties, paving the way for the development of innovative and environmentally-friendly materials.

Abstract:Cellulose nanomaterials from plant fibre provide various potential applications (i.e., biomedical, automotive, packaging, etc.). The biomedical application of nanocellulose isolated from plant fibre, which is a carbohydrate-based source, is very viable in the 21st century. The essential characteristics of plant fibre-based nanocellulose, which include its molecular, tensile and mechanical properties, as well as its biodegradability potential, have been widely explored for functional materials in the preparation of aerogel. Plant cellulose nano fibre (CNF)-based aerogels are novel functional materials that have attracted remarkable interest. In recent years, CNF aerogel has been extensively used in the biomedical field due to its biocompatibility, renewability and biodegradability. The effective surface area of CNFs influences broad applications in biological and medical studies such as sustainable antibiotic delivery for wound healing, the preparation of scaffolds for tissue cultures, the development of drug delivery systems, biosensing and an antimicrobial film for wound healing. Many researchers have a growing interest in using CNF-based aerogels in the mentioned applications. The application of cellulose-based materials is widely reported in the literature. However, only a few studies discuss the potential of cellulose nanofibre aerogel in detail. The potential applications of CNF aerogel include composites, organic–inorganic hybrids, gels, foams, aerogels/xerogels, coatings and nano-paper, bioactive and wound dressing materials and bioconversion. The potential applications of CNF have rarely been a subject of extensive review. Thus, extensive studies to develop materials with cheaper and better properties, high prospects and effectiveness for many applications are the focus of the present work. The present review focuses on the evolution of aerogels via characterisation studies on the isolation of CNF-based aerogels. The study concludes with a description of the potential and challenges of developing sustainable materials for biomedical applications.

Ultra-Porous Nanocellulose Foams: A Facile And Scalable Fabrication Approach

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibril foams are cellulose-based porous materials with outstanding mechanical properties, resulting from the high strength-to-weight ratio of nanofibrils. Here we report the development of an optimized fabrication process for highly porous cellulose foams, based on a well-controlled freeze-thawing-drying (FTD) process at ambient pressure. This process enables the fabrication of foams with ultra-high porosity, up to 99.4%, density of 10 mg/cm(3), and liquid (such as oil) absorption capacity of 100 L/kg. The proposed approach is based on the ice-templating of nanocellulose suspension in water, followed by thawing in ethanol and drying at environmental pressures. As such, the proposed fabrication route overcomes one of the major bottle-necks of the classical freeze-drying approach, by eliminating the energy-demanding vacuum drying step required to avoid wet foam collapse upon drying. As a result, the process is simple, environmentally friendly, and easily scalable. Details of the foam development fabrication process and functionalization are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the main parameters affecting the process, e.g., the concentration of nanocellulose and additives used to control the ice nucleation. The foams are also characterized by mechanical tests and oil absorption measurements, which are used to assess the foam absorption capability as well as the foam porosity. Compound water-in-oil drop impact experiments are used to demonstrate the potential of immiscible liquid separation using cellulose foams.
Aerogel nanoarchitectonics based on cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibers from eucalyptus pulp: preparation and comparative study

Abstract:Nanocellulose-based materials have attracted significant attention because of their attractive advantages. Particularly, aerogel, a porous nanocellulose material, have been used in diverse applications owing to their unique properties. In this study, short rod-like cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and long filament-like cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were isolated from a eucalyptus pulp source using acidolysis and oxidation/mechanical methods, respectively. Subsequently, two different aerogels were prepared from the CNCs and CNFs using the sol–gel method and their properties were compared. The morphology, chemical structure, chemical composition, shrinkage rate, internal structure, thermal degradation, biophysical properties, and mechanical properties of the as-prepared aerogels were compared. Furthermore, the shrinkage of the CNC and CNF aerogels was effectively controlled using a supercritical CO2 drying process. Additionally, three decomposition regions were observed in the thermogravimetric analysis curves of the aerogels; however, the CNF aerogels exhibited enhanced thermal stability than the CNC aerogels. Further, the CNC and CNF aerogels exhibited a mesoporous structure, and the compressive strength of the CNC and CNF aerogels under 85% strain was 269.5 and 299.5 kPa, respectively. This study provides fundamental knowledge on the fabrication of CNCs, CNFs, and corresponding aerogels from lignocellulosic biomass, and their characteristics.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Energy problems have become increasingly prominent. The use of thermal insulation materials is an effective measure to save energy. As an efficient energy-saving material, nanocellulose aerogels have broad application prospects. However, nanocellulose aerogels have problems such as poor mechanical properties, high flammability, and they easily absorbs water from the environment. These defects restrict their thermal insulation performance and severely limit their application. This review analyzes the thermal insulation mechanism of nanocellulose aerogels and summarizes the methods of preparing them from biomass raw materials. In addition, aiming at the inherent defects of nanocellulose aerogels, this review focuses on the methods used to improve their mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and hydrophobicity in order to prepare high-performance thermal insulation materials in line with the concept of sustainable development, thereby promoting energy conservation, rational use, and expanding the application of nanocellulose aerogels.

Abstract:This article describes the fabrication of nanocellulose fibers (NCFs) with different morphologies and surface properties from biomass resources as well as their self-aggregation into lightweight aerogels. By carefully modulating the nanofibrillation process, four types of NCFs could be readily fabricated, including long aggregated nanofiber bundles, long individualized nanofibers with surface C6 -carboxylate groups, short aggregated nanofibers, and short individualized nanofibers with surface sulfate groups. Free-standing lightweight aerogels were obtained from the corresponding aqueous NCF suspensions through freeze-drying. The structure of the aerogels could be controlled by manipulating the type of NCFs and the concentration of their suspensions. A possible mechanism for the self-aggregation of NCFs into two- or three-dimensional aerogel nanostructures was further proposed. Owing to web-like structure, high porosity, and high surface reactivity, the NCF aerogels exhibited high mechanical flexibility and ductility, and excellent properties for water uptake, removal of dye pollutants, and the use as thermal insulation materials. The aerogels also displayed sound-adsorption capability at high frequencies.

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), with its highly interlocked fibrils, showcases exceptional properties. BNC‐based aerogels are lightweight and possess a high surface area, making them suitable for diverse applications like medical devices, sensors, thermal and electrical insulation, and water treatment. This review highlights the attributes, multiscale features, and capacity of BNC‐based aerogels for sustainable solutions in material science. Microbial cellulose stands out for its exceptional characteristics in the form of biofilms formed by highly interlocked fibrils, namely, bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). Concurrently, bio‐based aerogels are finding uses in innovative materials owing to their lightweight, high surface area, physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. In particular, bio‐based aerogels based on BNC offer significant opportunities as alternatives to synthetic or mineral counterparts. BNC aerogels are proposed for diverse applications, ranging from sensors to medical devices, as well as thermal and electroactive systems. Due to the fibrous nanostructure of BNC and the micro‐porosity of BNC aerogels, these materials enable the creation of tailored and specialized designs. Herein, a comprehensive review of BNC‐based aerogels, their attributes, hierarchical, and multiscale features are provided. Their potential across various disciplines is highlighted, emphasizing their biocompatibility and suitability for physical and chemical modification. BNC aerogels are shown as feasible options to advance material science and foster sustainable solutions through biotechnology.

Abstract:Bio-based aerogels containing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are promising materials due to the inherent physical properties of CNF. The high affinity of cellulose to plant hemicelluloses (xyloglucan, xylan, pectin) is also an opportunity to develop biomaterials with new properties. Here, we prepared aerogels from gelled dispersions of CNFs and xyloglucan (XG) at different ratios by using a freeze-casting procedure in unidirectional (UD) and non-directional (ND) manners. As showed by rheology analysis, CNF and CNF/XG dispersions behave as true gels. We investigated the impact of the freezing procedure and the gel’s composition on the microstructure and the water absorption properties. The introduction of XG greatly affects the microstructure of the aerogel from lamellar to cellular morphology. Bio-based aerogels showed high water absorption capacity with shape recovery after compression. The relation between morphology and aerogel compositions is discussed.

Abstract:Agro-based wastes contain significant quantities of cellulosic materials from which nanocellulose can be extracted using various physical, biological, and chemical methods. These agro-wastes are termed lignocellulosic biomass as they contain cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose in abundance. Nanocellulose has its dimensions in nanoscale with excellent and distinctive attributes that attract researchers. Nanocellulose matrices are broadly categorised as nanocellulose crystals, nanocellulose fibrils and bacterial nanocellulose. Nanocellulose possesses some extremely significant properties, including biodegradability and biocompatibility, high aspect ratio, better mechanical attributes, easy surface modification, crystallinity, non-toxic nature, and water absorption capacity, making it a perfect material for a wide range of applications. The presence of hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose helps in its easier surface modification by various processes like carboxylation, silylation, esterification, amidation and etherification, which further allows its application as functional material. This review encompasses a brief discussion of the pre-treatments of lignocellulosic biomass, the different isolation processes of nanocellulose and the surface modification done to improve dispersibility in the polymer matrix. In this review, the different applications of nanocellulose in food industries, in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, and their safety issues and toxicity to humans and the environment have also been briefly discussed.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewThe potential of nanotechnology and nanocomposites in various sectors of research and application is promising and attracting increasing investment. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the preparation of nanomaterials from different cellulosic sources including wood. The transformation of cellulose down to the nanoscale endow these nanomaterials with new properties that give cellulose many new industrial applications in different fields, and an overview of the sound markets that can be impacted by cellulose nanomaterials is provided.Recent FindingsUnexpected and attractive properties can be observed when decreasing the size of a material down to the nanoscale. Cellulose is no exception to the rule. Cellulose nanomaterials exhibit specific outstanding properties and are potentially useful for a large number of industrial applications. Now, after intensive research, several initiatives have emerged in the perspective of producing cellulose nanomaterials at large scale. A number of organizations have announced cellulose nanomaterial demonstration plants.SummaryDespite being the most available natural polymer on earth, it is only quite recently that cellulose has gained prominence as a nanostructured material. Different forms of cellulose nanomaterials, resulting from a top-down deconstructing strategy (cellulose nanocrystals-CNCs, cellulose nanofibrils-CNFs) or bottom-up strategy (bacterial cellulose-BC) can be prepared. Multiple mechanical shearing actions applied to cellulosic fibers release more or less individually the nanofibrils. A controlled strong acid hydrolysis treatment can be applied to cellulosic fibers allowing dissolution of amorphous domains. The mechanical modulus of crystalline cellulose is the basis of many potential applications.

Abstract:Cellulose aerogels are renewable porous materials with low density, non-toxicity and excellent biodegradability. They can be used as a good matrix or skeleton material, suppling numerous sites for modifiers and functional fillers to obtain composite aerogels. Increasingly pioneering works have been devoted to the development of cellulose composite aerogels with various structures and functions in recent years. This review systematically summarizes the design strategies and applications of cellulose-based aerogels according to the various dimensions, mainly including bulk cellulose aerogels, cellulose aerogel microspheres, cellulose aerogel membranes, cellulose aerogel fibers and cellulose aerogel derived carbon. In addition, a specific focus is given to the advancement of aerogel fibers. Finally, the conclusions and future challenges are discussed in light of the current progress.
