Abstract:For a reliable and controllable wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the simultaneous wireless power and information transfer (SWPIT) technology has recently attracted special consideration to achieve real-time information exchange between the transmitter and receiver. In this article, a novel SWPIT system with an integrated signal magnetic coupler is proposed for wireless charging applications. The signal detection coil integrated with the receiver coil is designed to utilize the existing ferrite cores of the magnetic coupler, reducing the overall cost, and obtaining a more compact design. Meanwhile, the deviation frequency enlargement effect principle and the frequency shift keying technology are used to realize SWPIT in a wireless charger. The equivalent circuit of the proposed system is modeled and analyzed considering the cross-couplings between the integrated signal coil and the main coils. The finite element analysis (FEA) is presented through Ansys Maxwell software to select the optimal ferrite core structure and eliminate these unwanted cross-couplings. Finally, a 70-$W$ power experimental prototype is established, and comprehensive experimental results are given to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed SWPIT system. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrate that the measured output power fluctuation is below 0.5% during information transmission, the transmission rate is up to 9.6 kbps, and the system efficiency can be maintained at 88.76%.
Robustness of Wireless Power Transfer Systems with Parity-Time Symmetry and Asymmetry

Abstract:Recently, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has attracted much attention and shown rapid development. However, a fundamental challenge emerges in practical applications: how to achieve robust power transfer against the variation of operating conditions, such as the fluctuation of transfer distance, as well as the relative orientation of resonant coils. In this article, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate that the robustness of a parity-time (PT) asymmetric system with unbalanced gain-loss working in a weak coupling region can be improved significantly, compared with that of a PT-symmetric system with balanced gain-loss working in a strong coupling region under the premise that the system works at a fixed optimal frequency. A pure real mode known as bound state in the continuum (BIC) in the weak coupling region of the PT-asymmetric system is adopted to ensure the high efficiency and stability of the WPT and break the limitations of balanced gain-loss of the PT-symmetric system. The better robustness performance originates from the orthogonal state with a pure real eigenmode embedded in the weak coupling region. Further experiments also verify that the PT-asymmetric system can achieve higher efficiency than that of the PT-symmetric system. In addition, we discuss the performance of the WPT system based on the theories of coupled mode theory (CMT) and circuit theory (CT); the BIC in the framework of CMT and a perfect impedance matching condition in the framework of CT for efficient power transfer are consistent. We also conducted power experimental verification of 30 watts, and found the efficiency between the coils can reach over 90% in dynamic scenarios, which meets expectations. The presented framework extends the field of non-Hermitian physics, bridges the gap between the non-ideal PT-symmetric system and a practical engineering application, and introduces a novel WPT mechanism for flexible application scenarios. Our results could provide instructive significance for practical applications of the WPT system in the long term.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry has made encouraging progress in wireless power transmission (WPT), exhibiting significant advantages in terms of system robustness and transmission efficiency. However, there are still challenges that need to be addressed, particularly when classical schemes operate at a fixed frequency in the weak coupling region, where even minor changes in coupling strength can result in excessive current surges. This paper introduced a novel PT-symmetric WPT system featuring negative resistance constructed on the receiver side. We first established a theoretical framework for the classical two-coil PT-symmetric magnetically coupled resonant WPT system and subsequently extended it to incorporate the PT-symmetric WPT system with negative resistance on the receiver. This topological coil configuration facilitated stable power delivery over a broader range, with the capability of self-tuning frequency without requiring additional frequency modulation. This adaptability enabled the system to cater to diverse scenarios and opens up a novel avenue for practical applications of PT symmetry in WPT. Finally, we designed a 10 W prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of our topology, and the experimental results aligned with our theoretical calculations, validating the feasibility and potential of our PT-symmetric WPT system.

Abstract:The wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on parity-time (PT) symmetry has the advantages of robustness, stable and efficient power transmission. However, the region of PT symmetry is limited, which cannot satisfy some practical requirements. Multiple transmitting coils have been shown to improve the misalignment tolerance of WPT systems. Towards this end, a parity-time-symmetric-based WPT (PT-based WPT) system with double-transmitting coil is presented in this paper. Firstly, an approximate equivalent circuit model of this PT-based WPT system was developed. Secondly, compared with the conventional single transmitting coil PT-based WPT system, the proposed system expands the PT symmetry region and provides higher output power and transmission efficiency. Furthermore, the mutual inductance between two transmitting coils can be designed to meet the requirements of different scenarios, which improves the freedom of system design. Finally, a 30W prototype is designed to evaluate the proposed WPT system. Experimental results show that the critical coupling coefficient is reduced by about 12.5% at k12 = 0.51, which implies a longer transmission distance. Moreover, the maximum output voltage fluctuation in the strongly coupled region is only 3.5%, while the transfer efficiency is approximately constant, which implies stable and efficient power transfer.

Metamaterial-Controlled Parity-Time Symmetry in Non-Hermitian Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Abstract:Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) systems can be effectively described as non-Hermitian systems using the coupled-mode theory. In these systems, parity-time (PT) symmetric states facilitate efficient power transfer. Traditionally, passive resonators have been used as relay devices in such systems to extend transmission distance; however, this approach may induce additional eigenstates with broken PT symmetry, particularly when specific spatial arrangements of the relay resonators, dependent on the positions of the transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) resonators, are not maintained. This limitation hampers applications like free positioning WPT. To address this challenge, we introduce a multibody WPT system employing metamaterial controlled PT symmetry, which circumvents the constraints of physical arrangement. We utilize inverse design to configure the metamaterial, targeting a specific resonance mode that controls the effective coupling coefficients. Our approach ensures that a PT-symmetric state emerges when these coefficients, relating to the metamaterial and both the Tx and Rx resonators, are balanced. We confirm the stability of this state in a strong coupling regime, both theoretically and experimentally. Our experiments demonstrate the formation of PT-symmetric states governed by the metamaterial's resonant mode, achievable even with varying sizes and positions of the Tx and Rx in relation to the metamaterial. Moreover, we show that the PT symmetric state is attainable with different spatial configurations of the Rx resonator. This finding underscores our system's potential for free-positioning WPT, significantly broadening its applicability.

Abstract:A capacitive wireless power transfer (CPT) system based on parity–time (PT) symmetry achieves constant output characteristics under distance variation without additionally increasing the system complexity of the control strategy, where the concept of PT symmetry is derived from quantum mechanics, and the systems satisfying PT symmetry are invariant under space and time inversion. However, the exact PT-symmetric region (i.e., strong coupling region) of the general system is limited by the symmetry of the structure and parameters. To overcome this limitation, a novel generalized parity–time (GPT)-symmetric CPT system is proposed in this article. According to the equivalent circuit method, the circuit model of the proposed system is built, and the transfer characteristics are analyzed. Furthermore, a prototype is implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed CPT system. The results show that the PT-symmetric region is extended by 169.23% compared with the traditional PT-based CPT system, and a constant output power of 21.5 W is transferred with a constant transfer efficiency of 90%.

Abstract:Using relay coils is an effective way to increase the transfer distance of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system. Based on the high-order parity-time (PT) symmetric principle, the three-coil WPT system can obtain constant output power and transfer efficiency when the total transfer distance changes. However, the coupling coefficient between the transmitting coil and the relay coil must be equal to the relay coil and the receiving coil, which is quite difficult to meet in actual application. This paper proposed a high-order PT symmetric three-coil system equipped with a variable inductor, a variable capacitor and a buck converter. The variable inductor is used to regulate the equivalent inductance of the transmitting coil, so that the system can meet the symmetric coupling coefficients constraint even if the corresponding distances are asymmetric. The variable capacitor is used to keep the natural resonant frequency constant, which is also required in the PT symmetric system. The addition of a buck converter leads the system can output constant power when the load varies or the equivalent inductance varies. A simulation prototype is presented in PSIM, verifies that the proposed system can output constant power even under the asymmetric distances condition.
Dispersive gains enhance wireless power transfer with asymmetric resonance

Abstract:Parity-time symmetry is a fundamental concept in non-Hermitian physics that has recently gained attention for its potential in engineering advanced electronic systems and achieving robust wireless power transfer even in the presence of disturbances, through the incorporation of nonlinearity. However, the current parity-time-symmetric scheme falls short of achieving the theoretical maximum efficiency of wireless power transfer and faces challenges when applied to non-resistive loads. In this study, we propose a theoretical framework and provide experimental evidence demonstrating that asymmetric resonance, based on dispersive gain, can greatly enhance the efficiency of wireless power transfer beyond the limits of symmetric approaches. By leveraging the gain spectrum interleaving resulting from dispersion, we observe a mode switching phenomenon in asymmetric systems similar to the symmetry-breaking effect. This phenomenon reshapes the distribution of resonance energy and enables more efficient wireless power transfer compared to conventional methods. Our findings open up new possibilities for harnessing dispersion effects in various domains such as electronics, microwaves, and optics. This work represents a significant step towards exploiting dispersion as a means to optimize wireless power transfer and lays the foundation for future advancements in these fields.

Abstract:The traditional hybrid wireless power transfer (HPT) system's transmission power and transmission efficiency will be varied with the fluctuation of mutual capacitance and mutual inductance, whereas the proposed HPT system can maintain the transmission power and transmission efficiency constant as the mutual capacitance and mutual inductance change without any bilateral communication and feedback. Summary Inductive power transmission (IPT) and capacitive power transmission (CPT) are currently the two main wireless power transfer technologies. Hybrid power transmission (HPT) systems that combine IPT and CPT can improve transmission performance and are more attractive for some charging applications such as electric bicycles (e‐bikes). However, HPT systems are more sensitive to parameter variations, and the coupling mechanism is prone to misalignment during wireless charging. Therefore, achieving stable output power and constant transfer efficiency over a wide range of coupling coefficient variations is still a major challenge for HPT systems. In this work, the parity–time (PT) symmetry theory is applied to an SS‐type HPT system, and a circuit model of the PT‐based HPT system is developed by using coupling capacitance and coupling inductance. The effect of connecting the plates to the homonymous end or heteronymous end of the coupling coils on the PT symmetry range of the HPT system is discussed. It is found that the heteronymous end connection of the coils can effectively increase the range of constant output power and stable transfer efficiency. Finally, a prototype is built to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed PT‐based HPT system. The transfer power and efficiency remain constant in the PT‐symmetric range, and the inductive and capacitive coupling coefficients are smaller compared to IPT and CPT systems with the same parameters.

Abstract:Dual-side phase shift control has been proven to be an effective way to improve the efficiency of wireless power transfer system and reduce the overall system volume. But hard switching problem limits its implementation. This paper proposes a novel soft-switching dual-side phase shift circuit. The proposed circuit achieves zero-voltage-switching on at all load conditions. The principle of the proposed circuit is fully discussed and parameters design guideline is given. Finally, a 1kW prototype is built to validate the proposed circuit. The experimental results demonstrate the good performance of the proposed circuit.

Abstract:Abstract The wireless power transfer (WPT) technology based on magnetic resonance (a basic physical phenomenon) can directly transfer energy from the source to the load without wires and other physical contacts, which has been successfully applied to implantable medical devices, electric vehicles, robotic arms and other fields. However, due to the frequency splitting of near-field coupling, resonant WPT system has some unique limitations, such as poor transmission stability and low efficiency. Here, we first propose the anti-resonance with level pinning for high-performance WPT. By introducing the anti-resonance mode into the basic WPT platform, we uncover the competition between coherent coupling and coherent coupling to achieve the novel level pinning, and construct an effective anti-parity-time (anti-PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian system that is superior to previous PT-symmetric WPT schemes. On the one hand, the eigenvalue of the anti-PT-symmetric system at resonance frequency is always pure real in both strong and weak coupling regions, and can be used to overcome the limitation of transmission efficiency decrease caused by weak coupling, such as large size ratio of the transmitter to receiver or long transmission distance. On the other hand, due to the level pinning effect of the two kinds of coupling mechanisms, the working frequency of the system is guaranteed to be locked, so the frequency tracking is not required when the position and size of the receiver change. Even if the system deviates from the matching condition, an efficient WPT can be realized, thereby demonstrating the robustness of the level pinning. The experimental results show that when the size ratio of the transmitter coil to the receiver coil is 4.29 (which is in the weak coupling region), the transfer efficiency of the anti-PT-symmetric system is nearly 4.3 (3.2) times higher than that of the PT-symmetric system when the matching conditions are satisfied (deviated). Especially, considering the miniaturization and integration of devices in practice, a synthetic anti-PT-symmetric system is used to realize the robust WPT. The anti-PT-symmetric WPT technology based on the synthetic dimension not only provides a good research platform for the study of abundant non-Hermitian physics, but also paves a new way for the near-field applications of breaking through the traditional resonance mechanism, such as resonance imaging, wireless sensing, photonic routing and so on.

Efficiency Improvement of the Parity-Time-Symmetric Wireless Power Transfer System for Electric Vehicle Charging

Abstract:Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology for charging electric vehicles (EVs) due to its intelligence, convenience, and reliability. However, achieving high efficiency and high power with wide misalignment tolerance is still a major challenge in commercializing wireless charging technology in EVs. Here, a novel parity-time-symmetric-based WPT (PT-based WPT) system with multiple decoupled receiving coils is developed to address the above issues. The circuit model of this PT-based WPT system is established. Our theoretical analysis shows that the output power and transfer efficiency of the proposed system also remain constant over a coupling coefficient variation. More importantly, compared to the conventional one-receiving-coil PT-based WPT system, the use of multiple receiving coils can effectively improve the transfer efficiency and reduce the current stress of system. In order to evaluate the proposed WPT system, a 1-kW laboratory prototype is built and tested. Experimental results show that a stable of power transfer is maintained with constant transfer efficiency of 96.1% within a range of 100–200-mm air gap. In particular, the same transfer efficiency is achieved at 100-mm air gap within a horizontal tolerance of 240 mm, while a horizontal tolerance of 100 mm at 200-mm air gap.

Abstract:Motors arise as a heart of the mobility society, and wirelessly operated motors may improve our standard of living. Wireless power transfer in the kilohertz and megahertz range has been extensively explored, finding various potential applications in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and medical implants. However, stable operation of wirelessly powered motors remains challenging due to voltage fluctuations for motors occurring in dynamic scenarios, e.g., the rotating speed of the motors is varied. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the operation of a motor, where the power is wirelessly transferred via coils, is robust against the rotating speed by employing the analogy with non-Hermitian parity-time (PT) symmetry. In addition, our system is robust for misalignment of the coils. Our results open up opportunities for the robust operation of motors via wireless power transfer in dynamic scenarios towards autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:Robust transfer efficiency against the various operating conditions in a wireless power transfer system remains a fundamentally important challenge. This challenge becomes even more critical when transferring power to groups of inductively coupled receivers. We propose a method for efficient wireless power transfer to multiple receivers exploiting the concept of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD). In previous studies based on PT symmetry, a receiver's operation has been divided into two strong and weak coupling regimes, and the power transfer efficiency is constant in the strong coupling regime when varying the coupling <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://factor.Here" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the concept of strong and weak coupling and constant power efficiency is extended to a system of multiple receivers that do not follow PT symmetry. We show that the important feature to have a roughly constant power efficiency, independently of the positions of the receivers, is the existence of an EPD that separates the weak and strong regimes. Our proposed method demonstrates a system with less sensitivity to the coupling change than a conventional system without EPD when the receivers and their couplings to the transmitter are not necessarily identical.

Abstract:Recent advances in non-radiative wireless power transfer (WPT) technique essentially relying on magnetic resonance and near-field coupling have successfully enabled a wide range of applications. However, WPT systems based on double resonators are severely limited to short- or mid-range distance, due to the deteriorating efficiency and power with long transfer distance. WPT systems based on multi-relay resonators can overcome this problem, which, however, suffer from sensitivity to perturbations and fabrication imperfections. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a concept of topological wireless power transfer (TWPT), where energy is transferred efficiently via the near-field coupling between two topological edge states localized at the ends of a one-dimensional radiowave topological insulator. Such a TWPT system can be modelled as a parity-time-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with complex boundary potentials. Besides, the coil configurations are judiciously designed, which significantly suppress the unwanted cross-couplings between nonadjacent coils that could break the chiral symmetry of the SSH chain. By tuning the inter- and intra-cell coupling strengths, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate high energy transfer efficiency near the exceptional point of the topological edge states, even in the presence of disorder. The combination of topological metamaterials, non-Hermitian physics, and WPT techniques could promise a variety of robust, efficient WPT applications over long distances in electronics, transportation, and industry.

Abstract:Abstract Harnessing parity–time symmetry with balanced gain and loss profiles has created a variety of opportunities in electronics from wireless energy transfer to telemetry sensing and topological defect engineering. However, existing implementations often employ ad hoc approaches at low operating frequencies and are unable to accommodate large-scale integration. Here we report a fully integrated realization of parity–time symmetry in a standard complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process technology. Our work demonstrates salient parity–time symmetry features such as phase transition as well as the ability to manipulate broadband microwave generation and propagation beyond the limitations encountered by existing schemes. The system shows 2.1 times the bandwidth and 30% noise reduction compared to conventional microwave generation in the oscillatory mode, and displays large non-reciprocal microwave transport from 2.75 to 3.10 GHz in the non-oscillatory mode due to enhanced nonlinearities. This approach could enrich integrated circuit design methodology beyond well-established performance limits and enable the use of scalable integrated circuit technology to study topological effects in high-dimensional non-Hermitian systems.

The frequency selection mechanism and energy efficiency of the nonlinear WPT system based on pseudo-Hermitian under the coupling mode theory approximation are analyzed. Theoretical analysis indicates that under certain coupling coefficients and load conditions, the proposed system can achieve frequency adaptation in a stable frequency mode without the need to change the circuit frequency. When the load changes dynamically, the stability of the power output is maintained using a proportional integral (PI) control strategy that only collects the voltage and current at the transmitting end, eliminating the need for wireless communication circuits with feedback from the receiving side. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed design scheme can achieve constant power transmission when load conditions change, maintaining stable and relatively high transmission efficiency. The proposed scheme exhibits benefits in practical applications since no communication is required.

Abstract:Abstract A prominent problem in wireless power transmission systems is the sensitivity of the mode frequency to changes in position. While a feedback system can address this issue, it also introduces complexity to the system, potentially giving rise to additional problems. Typically, more complex systems exhibit unique properties, and there are modes suitable for power transfer in high-order PT systems.In this paper, we propose a dynamic wireless power transmission system with hybrid coupling, utilizing odd coils only. This approach offers a feasible solution for dynamic wireless power transmission systems. We calculate the eigenvalues of the system and observe that the eigenvalue of a mode does not change as the load moves, remaining a pure real number. In our study, the system’s transmission efficiency can be maintained at a high and stable level at a fixed working frequency, even as the load position changes. This capability can be employed for stable dynamic charging.
