Abstract:Abstract The role of Panlongcheng—a walled settlement on the Yangtze River with obvious links to the Erligang capital at Zhengzhou, ~ 500 km to the north—in early Bronze Age China has been the subject of much debate. Panlongcheng is a typical Erligang site (~ 1500–1300 BC), with evidence for people of elite status, unlike any other site apart from Zhengzhou itself. The tombs and bronzes at Panlongcheng, as well as other materials, closely resemble those at Zhengzhou. Why was Panlongcheng established along the Yangtze River, and what were the Erligang elites doing there? Considering the rich copper deposits in this area, it is widely assumed that the major function of Panlongcheng was to ship metal to Zhengzhou, and in return to receive bronze vessels from Zhengzhou. The purpose of this paper is to revisit this discussion through a re-evaluation of the scientific data on the bronzes from each site. A series of differences and similarities in the chemical and isotopic compositions of the metal objects at Panlongcheng and Zhengzhou are identified, suggesting that the relationship was more complex than was previously thought. In this light, despite a close social and presumably political affiliation with Zhengzhou, Panlongcheng appears likely to have had its own metal-casting capability, rather than having to rely completely on finished objects imported from Zhengzhou. This discovery encourages scholars to re-consider the metal supply network and the underlying political landscape in early dynastic China, shifting from a linear model to a complex but probably more realistic one.

Revisiting Trace Element Data and Metal Circulation Investigation of Western Zhou Bronzes

Abstract:The provenance of copper is a major focus in archaeometallurgical studies of Bronze Age China. Despite a large dataset of lead isotopes and trace elements accumulated over the last few decades, discussions surrounding this issue remains inconclusive. A new interpretation paradigm of trace element data called ‘copper group method’ prompted a new round of exchanges and publications on this issue. This paper sets out to reconsider the potential and problems of using trace elements data as a proxy of provenance with some recently published Western Zhou bronze data. It is found that grouping with arbitrary cut-offs causes ignoring of outliers and hides the linear correlation between elements. Bi and Co, excluded in copper group method for simplification, are potentially important indicators of metal provenance in the Western Zhou period. Dimensional reduction and cluster analysis of log-ratio transformed trace element data suggest a series of alternative interpretations about metal circulation of the Western Zhou bronzes, and highlight the regional variation between the Zeng and Jin states in terms of their metal supply networks.

Abstract:Research into ancient Chinese metallurgy has flourished over recent years with the accumulation of analytical data reflecting the needs of so many archaeological finds. However, the relationship between technology and society is unlikely to be revealed simply by analysing more artefacts. This is particularly evident in the debates over the sources of metals used to manufacture the Chinese ritual bronzes of the Shang (c. 1500-1046 BCE), Western Zhou (c. 1046–771 BCE) and Eastern Zhou (c. 771–256 BCE) dynasties. This article recognises that approaches to analytical data often fail to provide robust platforms from which to investigate metallurgical technology within its wider social and cultural contexts. To address this issue, a recently developed multivariate approach is applied to over 300 Chinese ritual bronzes from legacy data sets and nearly 100 unearthed copper-based objects from Anyang and Hanzhong. Unlike previous investigations that have relied predominantly on interpreting lead isotope signatures, the compositional analyses presented here indicate that copper and lead used to manufacture the bronzes are derived from mining progressively deeper ores in the same deposits rather than seeking out new sources. It is proposed that interpretations of social, cultural and technological change predicated on the acquisition of metals from disparate regions during the Chinese Bronze Age may need to be revised.

Revisiting Lead Isotope Data in Shang and Western Zhou Bronzes

Abstract:Lead is a major component of Chinese ritual bronze vessels. Defining its sources and usage is thus highly significant to understanding the metal industries of the Chinese Bronze Age. A new, simplified method has been developed for examining data, thereby providing insight into diachronic change in the origins of lead sources used in artefacts. Application of this method to the existing corpus of lead isotope data from the Erlitou (c. 1600 BC) to the Western Zhou (c. 1045-771 BC) periods reveals changes in the isotope signal over this time frame. These changes clearly reflect shifts in the sourcing of ores and their use in metropolitan foundries. Further data are required to understand these complex developments.
Bronze Production in the Ancient Chengdu Plains: A Diachronic Metallurgical Perspective on a Separate Cultural Region

Abstract:As one of the most important separate cultural regions in ancient China, the Chengdu Plains provide a unique example to explore the development of bronze production. We analysed 37 bronze objects from the Western Zhou period to the Tang Dynasty in the Chengdu Plains for elemental compositions, microstructure, and lead isotope ratios. We referred to bronze data from the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits to compare results that demonstrated that most samples from the Chengdu Plains were Cu-Pb-Sn alloys with variable tin and lead content. The alloy technique used in the Warring States period bronzes, which were uncovered in the Baishoulu cemetery, differed from the techniques used in other samples. Casting is the major technique used for all types of objects in different periods. The only cold-worked and annealed sample found so far was a Chu-style vessel. Different lead sources and a possible single copper source were constantly used in local bronze production from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Warring States period (more than 600 years). Some coins in Han and Tang Dynasty potentially also used these same lead sources. Comparison with Sanxingdui bronze suggests that both lead and copper sources of Sanxingdui bronzes are different from the later metal sources. We therefore propose that the Sanxingdui bronze might not have been locally made or was made with outside materials. Our study suggests that diachronic study on bronze production could provide clues to solve more archaeological questions other than the development of bronze production.

Abstract:Bronze Age Shang China is characterized by its large-scale production system and distinctive ritual world. Both are vividly materialized by a large number of bronze ritual vessels with added lead. Whilst a remarkable amount of research effort has been channeled into the trace elemental and lead isotopic analysis of these ritual vessels, and successfully revealed some important fingerprints such as highly radiogenic lead (HRL), there is as yet no consensus on the metal source(s) which supplied the entire bronze production during the Shang period. In addition to the traditional method to look for matching and mismatching between ores and objects, we propose that environmental archaeological studies can provide crucial clues to address some long-standing questions in archaeometallurgy. In the first part of the paper, we attempt to illustrate the potential and complexity of combining these two subjects together. The second part of the paper offers a case study by reviewing the debate on Yunnan as the source of HRL. Synthesis of various lines of evidence published by most recent studies on environmental archaeology, archaeometallurgy, field reports and radiocarbon dating suggests that this hypothesis appears much less likely than previously suspected.

Abstract:The production and circulation of bronzes among the regional states of the Western Zhou Dynasty are an important way of understanding the political and ritual systems of the dynasty. This paper studies the production and circulation of bronzes from three points of view: the cultural background, techniques, and raw materials of bronzes. First, the authors classified the bronzes excavated from the Zhouyuan Site, Yejiashan Cemetery, the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin, and Yu State Cemetery based on shapes and techniques. On this basis, a trace element analysis and lead isotope analysis were conducted to investigate the quality of the raw materials. The three aspects used for classification-cultural background, technologies and raw materials-complement each other during the discussion of the issues of interest. The authors conclude that high-quality bronzes from Ji-surnamed regional states represented by those excavated from Yejiashan Cemetery and the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin show consistency with Zhouyuan bronzes in the royal court in terms of raw materials, shapes, and techniques, therefore indicating their origin from unified workshops. However, low-quality bronzes produced in these places, and also bronzes from non-Ji-surnamed regional states, represented by those excavated in Yu State and Peng State, possess unique shape and technique characteristics, and included different copper materials and partly the same lead materials, reflecting the degree of independence that regional states enjoyed in terms of bronze production. The imperial court uniformly made high-quality bronzes, and distributed them to all regional states, while the regional states independently produced some low-quality bronzes; this system probably came into being during the early Western Zhou Dynasty. However, from the middle period of the Western Zhou Dynasty, some regional states increased their independence in the production of bronzes, and the distribution system of the imperial court began to collapse gradually.
Provenance of the Material for Bronze Vessels of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties unearthed from Some Areas of China

Abstract:This paper probes into the provenance of material for the bronze vessels in Shang and Zhou Dynasties from some areas in China using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer(ICP-AES)to analyze trace elements.The trace elements from bronze vessels were compared with those from ingot and copper pieces from Pre-Qin Dynastiy's mining and smelting sites such as Tonglüshan,Tongling,Nanling,Zhongtiaoshan and Zhaobishan.Our results reveal that the copper of the bronze vessels in Anhui Province came from ancient copper ores of the Middle and Lower reaches of Yangtze River and the copper of bronze vessels found in Western Liaoning Province and Houma came from the Dajing copper ores.Meanwhile,this research indicates trace elements Au,Ag,As,Sb,Bi,Se,Te,Co,Ni,Mo and Zn,etc.in copper ores are indicative of the provenance of material of the bronze vessels.It is feasible to determine the possible provenance of the bronze vessels on the basis of analysis of trace element in bronze vessels.

Abstract:This paper prepared and analyzed a total of 15 slag samples collected from the Yanqiaopan ancient city site of the Han dynasty (the third century BC to the third century AD). According to the SEM–EDS results, these samples are bronze slags, and the lead isotopic results reveal that the ores used during smelting may be imported from Luanchuan and Xiaoqinling. Additionally, the isotopic studies on the metal resources used in bronze metallurgy in Northern Shaanxi changed from the Shang dynasty to the Han dynasty.

Abstract:This study first publishes lead isotope data of bronze vessels from Central China in Western Han Dynasty and attempts to find out the lead ores circulation of this time by taking bronzes from the Gejiagou site (Nanyang City, Henan Province) as an example. The elemental concentrations suggest the lead should be introduced on purpose and indicate the provenance information of lead ores. All the lead isotope ratios conform to the characteristics of common lead and most of them are similar to Nanyang local lead ores. The lead of another two bronzes, NY9 and NY13, should be imported from southern China. Combined with the historical background of early Western Han Dynasty, the wider range of the lead ore circulation may be an indicator for, as the loose policy, economic prosperity and transportation improvement.

Abstract:Archaeological investigations recently conducted at the site of Tajiasi, a Middle Shang bronze casting workshop, have led to the discovery of abundant metallurgical micro-remains from various stages of bronze production processes. Lead isotope analysis of these samples has given fresh insights into the discussion about the origin of the metal sources employed during this period. The copper melting and refining slags, characterized by Pb-206/Pb-204 around 18.0 and very low lead concentrations (<4,000 ppm), provided the first reliable indicator about the geological origin of copper used in the Middle Shang period. It is suggested the Jiurui metallogenic district in the Middle Yangtze River, home to the Shang period copper smelting site of Tongling, was the copper source for the Taijiasi site. On the other hand, alloying slags and bronze objects bearing highly radiogenic lead (Pb-206/Pb-204 > 19.0) show an elevated, but still relatively low Pb content (<2 wt%), suggesting that the source of tin introduced Pb which was characterized by HRL. Items including alloying slags, dross, spillages and bronze objects have similar HRL characteristics to the Middle Shang bronzes from other sites. This result indicated the Taijiasi site was involved in a multi-line metal circulation during this period, and elucidated the complexity and multiplicity of supply networks for different kinds of metals in the Middle Shang period. It also highlighted the great potential of copper melting and refining slags for detecting the copper provenance.

Abstract:Northern Anhui was an important region for diverse bronze culture convergence and extensive metal resource circulation in the Pre-Qin Period. In this paper, metallographic microstructure analysis, chemical composition analysis, and lead isotope ratio analysis were conducted on 12 samples of 6 Warring States Period (476-221 BCE) bronze vessels excavated from Chutai Cemetery M1, Fuyang, Anhui Province, revealing the integrated application of diversified manufacturing processes, such as casting, forging, cold working, and welding and multiple metal minerals. The analytical results showed that 2 Ding vessels () were made by casting, and 2 He vessels () and 2 Dui vessels () were made by forging followed by cold working. These two types of bronze vessels made by different manufacturing processes have significantly distinct alloy ratios and mineral sources, among which the Cu and Sn contents of the 2 cast bronze vessels are lower and the Pb content is higher, while the Cu and Sn contents of the 4 forged bronze vessels are higher and the Pb content is lower. The lead minerals of the two types of bronze vessels might come from Western Henan and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, respectively. In addition, the 3 pieces of solder used to weld bronze vessels were all made of pure Sn, their metal minerals should come from the densely distributed area of tin ore in Southern China, and Sn solders were mainly discovered in the Chu culture area during the Eastern Zhou Period.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of the chemical alloying data (Cu, Sn, Pb) on the bronzes recovered from the Late Shang capital at Yinxu, revealing a complex pattern which varies by social status and object typology, and which also changes over time. The preference for higher tin in the bronze vessels and weapons for the elites during Yinxu Phase II gives way to a more binary pattern (with weapons being preferentially alloyed with lead) for the lower elites of phase II, which becomes prevalent in subsequent phases. These changes are interpreted in terms of different 'alloying practices', which attempts to reconstruct the way in which the alloys are created at the point of casting. The alloy type described here as A1/A2 (11–24% tin, 0 to 3–5% lead) seems most likely to have been created by mixing together three components, corresponding to mixing relatively pure copper, tin and lead. This contrasts with the suggestion in the Kaogong Ji , several hundred years later, that binary pre-prepared alloys were used. It is now important to determine when such a change might have occurred. The suggestion that alloy type B (low tin, variably high lead) could have been made by combining pure copper with a slightly impure lead (95%Pb/5%Sn) hints that such practices might have started during the Shang, but requires more work, especially on the intervening Western and Eastern Zhou periods.

Abstract:The bronze wares and ironwares,excavated at Sanjiaowei in Tianchang country,Anhui Province,were analyzed by means of scientific methods,such as XRD,XRF,SEM and metallographic microscope.The results showed that the corrosion products on the surface of bronze wares and ironwares were harmless and could be reserved.One bronze piece was made of Cu-Sn while the other two bronze samples were Cu-Sn-Pb alloys.Three bronze wares were manufactured by the technology of hot forging with uniform texture,and the iron sword was made of steel annealed by cast iron with less impurity and iron kettle was cast by white iron.

Abstract:Six thin Chinese bronze chariot accessory sheets from Songjia cemetery in Shaanxi province were dated to the late Western Zhou dynasty (ninth to eighth centuries bce) and analysed for their elemental composition and motif techniques. The objects were cold worked and annealed with embossed motifs and carved lines. This is the only case of cold working and annealing with embossed motifs and carved lines in China; these techniques may have come from or been influenced by other cultures. These findings are important for revealing the development of the cold‐working, annealing techniques and relevant motif techniques in China.

Abstract:This study discusses the bronzes of the Han Dynasty unearthed from Xiangyang, Hubei Province, to study their production and provenance. Metallographic microscopy, scanning electron microscope energy dispersive (SEM–EDS), and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) were used to analyze bronze samples. The results of composition analysis show that, in addition to reducing production costs, the appearance of low-tin vessels in Xiangyang during the Han Dynasty may also be related to the further development of bronze production techniques. The lead isotope data show that in the early Western Han period, the minerals used for bronzes from the Eastern Zhou period continued to be used in the Xiangyang area; after the mid-Western Han period, being under the jurisdiction of Nanyang Prefecture, the lead ore used in Xiangyang bronzes most likely derive from Nanyang area; in addition, a small number of bronzes likely used minerals from southern Anhui and Yunnan, which are presumed to have circulated to the Xiangyang area in a customized manner. Lastly, the first detection of bronze vessels containing highly radiogenic lead (HRL) in the Western Han Dynasty provides new material for further research into the use of HRL in ancient China.

Abstract:Yunnan province is located in Southwest China. A technical study of the metal artifacts unearthed in western Yunnan can not only improve our understanding of the bronze culture but also fill many gaps in the archaeological studies that have been carried out on prehistoric bronzes from Yunnan. In this paper, we summarize the results of our analyses of bronzes dating from the seventeenth century BCE to the second century BCE. Ninety-nine metal artifacts, including weapons, tools, and decorative objects have been analyzed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to examine the microstructure and composition. The results show that a variety of alloys were employed, including unalloyed copper, copper-tin, copper-tin-lead, copper-arsenic, copper-arsenic-lead, copper-lead-antimony, copper-antimony, lead-antimony-arsenic-copper, carburized bloom steel, and hypoeutectoid steel. The copper alloys were fabricated by casting, cold working after casting, and annealing. This study has expanded our knowledge of bronze culture in these areas and reveals some of the technological relationships among the regions of western and central Yunnan, the northern steppe, and Southeast Asia.

Abstract:Piece mould casting technology, as a hall mark of the central plains of China during the Bronze Age, has attracted scholars' interest globally. Bronze ritual vessels found in this area were produced in large quantities and generally cast with the moulds composed of three or more sections. This enormous industry certainly required workers to have had professional knowledge to ensure the success of every single cast. Mould making technology was one of its most important parts. This research looks into the microstructure of bronze casting moulds of the Eastern Zhou period, which was a rarely studied topic in previous research. Through comparison with local pottery, it is shown that casting moulds in this period were produced with quite specialized sand-rich material, and clay was only a minor component. It is then discussed how this unique material can be beneficial to the bronze casting process and how this technology was integrated as a crucial part of the Chinese bronze casting system. These analyses might be able to portray mould makers in the ancient bronze foundries as a group of specialized people with their own traditions and professional knowledge.

Abstract:The Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan regions in southwestern China have excellent metallogenic conditions and abundant mineral resources. The Han Dynasty bronzes developed on this basis contain important metal mineral and cultural information. Zhaotong is a key transportation hub in southwestern China, playing an important role in mineral development, collection, and transportation. Based on the examination of Eastern Han Dynasty bronzes excavated from Zhaotong, combined with modern geological survey data, historical documentation and metallurgical archaeological research, it is speculated that the metal resources used may have come from Sichuan–Yunnan–Guizhou adjacent metallogenic regions. This provides a basis for further research into the early exploitation of mineral resources in the southwest region. By comparing the lead isotopes of Han dynasty bronzes from adjacent areas, the data from the Zhaotong bronze reflect the supply characteristics of metal resources in southwest China during the Eastern Han period and the change in resource management policy of the Eastern Han government towards southwest China.

Abstract:With the textual research,the records about copper and silver mining and melting in ancient Zhejiang,China were collected and summariized.The resource significance and environmental risk of identifying the ancient mining and melting sites were also discussed.It is for ease reference to develop and apply the ancient information about metal mining and melting in finding new heavy metal hyperaccumulators and new mineral resources,and eliminating the potential risk of environmental pollution caused by ancient mining and smelting residues.
